It had not taken her long to wind up in trouble. In fact, it had taken her minus days since starting U.A., receiving a detention before she even started. How was Yoichi supposed to know that she was supposed to help people? Surely other prospective students should be looking after themselves!
After the verbal thrashing that her mother had given her, Yoichi wasn't looking forward to this meeting. Her Homeroom teacher, pro-hero Giga Bite, and all-round giant scary beetle man. She swallowed as she stood outside his door, then summoned all of her strength and confidence.
Yoichi knocked three times, and stood back to await her fate...

"Please, come in."
Klaus' voice was many things, but intimidating was not one of them. The three words were said with surprising sincerity; the 1-A teacher was eager to welcome the student into his office. Klaus was this way with all of his students, though this appointment in particular stood out. The case of Gozen Yoichi had piqued his interest the moment it crossed his desk, though not necessarily for pleasant reasons. The girl's school record prior to U.A. was not what many would call encouraging, though that determination had not mattered for Klaus when he had prepared her acceptance letter. If anything, it proved to him just how important it was for him to maintain a dialogue with the girl.
The office itself was not what one would call spacious, especially not for someone of Klaus' gargantuan frame. He looked like he barely fit behind his desk, never mind how he managed to have room for anything else. None of this seemed to bother him as he gestured to the empty seat in front of his desk. His four arms rested in front of him, covering whatever paperwork he had been working on prior to Yoichi coming in. His lesser mandibles clicked together twice.
"Good morning, Yoichi. Thank you for meeting with me. How are you doing today?" Klaus' expressions were, admittedly, difficult to approach, and that went double for new students. He hoped, however, that the girl would do her best to be forthcoming with him. This was a safe place. He would never berate her - or anyone - for speaking their mind.

As instructed, Yoichi stepped into the cramped office, standing awkwardly before Giga Bite. She couldn't even look him in his beetle eyes, staring at her feet like a scolded child. It was, in fact, what Yoichi felt like. Her mother's vicious reaction to her detentions gained via her actions in the entrance exam, had her prepared for the worst. Truthfully, Yoichi was always prepared for the worst. Nothing good ever came of being summoned by someone.
Also, this was Giga Bite. As intimidating as he was, this was the Number Eight pro-hero, her new homeroom teacher, and someone Yoichi had instant respect for. It was what made this threat of a major telling off all the more frightening to Yoichi. She swallowed, hands cling together at her front. A meek imitation of the girl who had stormed the exam so thoroughly. Was this how she always was in front of adults?
"I'm okay, thank you."
Yoichi swallowed, but perplexion filled her. Usually the shouting had already started by now. Slowly, the girl looked up, staring into Giga Bite's eyes with a worried frown.
"This is about my actions in the exam, right?"

Klaus' larynx tightened. He was painfully familiar with the way Yoichi spoke those words. A confirmation of his suspicions, though not necessarily for the better. Children today were eager to get to the point. On any other subject, Klaus might be inclined to agree. He interlaced his four hands with one another on the desk between them, and clicked his lesser mandibles together. "Nocturne may be interested in what happened, but I am not. I would like to know "why"."
Klaus' tone was curious at best, and pensive at worst. He did not want Yoichi to feel like she was being interrogated. Perhaps an impossible task, considering the circumstances, but he had to try. These children needed to understand that he was their friend... not just another grown-up. "Speak freely. Do not leave anything out."

Why?
Yoichi blinked, hee brow twisting in confusion. Her actions had led to another examinee being nearly crushed by one of the robots. Up until this moment, she hadn't thought anything about it, save for the fact it had wound her in trouble. Was it her fault that they hadn't been strong enough to defend themselves? And yet... the question caused a bleary fog to descend over her mind. Why? She swallowed, uncertain of herself or her answers.
"Because..."
Because I didn't care? Because I was so focused on the task that I didn't bother looking at others? Yoichi's eyes were trained on Gigabite's desk, her breathing growing steadily faster as she struggled to think. Why? Because they were in my way? Her fists clenched in her lap, red tinges creeping onto her cheeks. It felt like the moment before one of her mother's rages. Why? Why? Why? Yoichi shut her eyes for a moment.
"Because... I was careless. Because I didn't see them as worthy opponents. I took their points without any effort, and didnt care what happened to them after that."
She let out a shuddering sigh. That was the truth, alright. Yoichi wasn't looking at Gigabite, finding it hard to look him in the eye. He would be mad, furious, yell at her and threaten to throw her out. Yoichi could sense that this whole ordeal, born from putting another prospective student in danger, spelt her end at U.A. for good. A short existence, too good to be true. Back to the dark shadow that her mother cast. Back to the familiar hell that awaited her.
Yoichi lifted her head at that moment. Her eyes glistened with tears, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, or perhaps anger.
"Because I'm not worthy of becoming a hero! I'm just worthless trash. I promised to become the best, but I don't even know how to prevent others from being hurt around me. What kind of person does that? I just cared about the points!"
Yoichi wiped her eyes on the back of her sleeve.
"U.A. has been my goal for as long as I remember. Why? Because I couldn't let anyone or anything get in my way! There isn't an alternative to this life... so please, Gigabite-sensei, please don't expell me just yet. I'll be better! I'll do better, I promise you!"
She was staring down at her lap again, and like the first rain of spring tears were falling on the backs of her tightly held hands. The forecast had spoken of storms to come, but here it was over in am instant. Yoichi closed her eyes again, waiting for it all to end.

Throughout Yoichi’s responses, even as they spiraled into the display before him now, Klaus did not seem fazed. It was not that he appeared indifferent, or worse, callous to the girl’s emotions. There was incredible sympathy behind his pained eyes, though as with many people - least of all this poor girl, going through what she was in this moment - those subtleties remained hidden beneath the surface.
He allowed a few long stretches of silence after Yoichi had finished. It helped him gather his own thoughts, though it was pointed for Yoichi as well, to help her regather herself. She needed to be in a state where she would hear what he had to say. Whether Yoichi was matching Klaus’ eye contact made no difference to what he said to her: “Yoichi, when I ask if you are okay, please do not give me the answer that you think I wish to hear. I can only help you if you are honest with me.”
As Yoichi cried, Klaus reached across the desk with two arms to hold her close. He waited to feel her tears reach his body, and held Yoichi like this until he could no longer feel her tears. Klaus would hold her for as long as she needed him to. “You do not sound like the Yoichi I met at orientation. Who am I talking to right now?”

Yoichi felt surprise when Klais drew her close. She could count the number of times she had been hugged on one hand, a strange and alien feeling. And yet... the warmth of Gigabite, the earthy smell of forests and soil, his strong arms wrapping around her like she was a tiny child in a giant's arms... it was too much. The tears came fast, her body wracking with deep sobs emanating from the depths of her soul. They went on for what seemed like an eternity, monsoon season come early to drench her face and the front of Gigabite's chitin.
Slowly, her shoulders stopped rising violently, her tears drying up. She gently but firmly pushed herself from Gigabite's protective hold, looking up at his beetle eyes with her own, now red and puffy. There was a curious expression on her face. Sadness, weariness, anger. A mixing pot of different feelings. Yoichi composed herself. Gigabite could see this was a technique learned over years, honed into a technique. Deep breathing, eyes closed, fists squeezing together. Then she opened her eyes, fixing her teacher with that jet-black stare.
"I'm not okay. I've not been okay for a long time. I'm not even sure if I know what 'okay' feels like anymore."
Yoichi took another deep breath. Something about Gigabite was allowing her to speak freely, from her heart. She felt a jolt of fear, knowing that her whole life could spill out onto his desk if she didn't control it. If this was what he wanted... it would have to be one step at a time.
"The Yoichi you met at orientation... she's a face. A mask that my mother taught me to wear. I thought... I thought everyone did the same. Then... the others just wore their hearts on their sleeve. They spoke freely about how they felt, seemed to be comfortable in their skin... so now I'm at a loss. I was told a hero should act like I acted, so when it landed me in detention..."
She took another breath, sitting herself down on the chair before the giant teacher.
"I was taught that, to be the strongest, you had ignore everyone else. So I did, and it got me into 1-A, but... then I find out that what I did was wrong. I should have helped the others. Why? Aren't they training to be heroes too? How can I become the Number One if I keep stopping to pick other people off the floor?"
Yoichi shook her head, letting out a mirthless laugh.
"I don't mean to bad mouth mother, but... I don't think she's been training me correctly when it comes to other people. Yet I fear that it's already too late. I just find anger and contempt at them all for being weak and getting in my way. How can I overcome something that's been hammered into me every day of my life?"
She sniffed, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand, looking up at Gigabite with an imploring look.
"Please don't tell my mother I spoke poorly of her."

As soon as Yoichi began to pull away, Klaus relented, allowing her to find her space again. He gently caressed her cheek one last time before returning to his previous posture at his desk. How many times had Yoichi known that comfort, from her mother or anyone else in her life? Through bitter experience, Klaus could glean the answer. He had worked with cases similar to Yoichi before... but perhaps none so extreme.
Once she had finished, Klaus... smiled? It was difficult to tell, aside from his tone of voice, though the way his eyes narrowed and his antennae rose, he was using all body language available to him to communicate sincerity to the girl. "Nothing leaves this room unless you want it to, Yoichi. These meetings are completely confidential."
Giga Bite paused, clicking his smaller mandibles together. He gestured at Yoichi with his right hand, palm facing up. "It is never too late. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. You have only just begun your time here at U.A. You still have your entire life ahead of you. If you remember one thing from today's discussion, let it be that. Together, we will realize your potential, Yoichi."
The Beetle Hero leaned forward. His eyes were directly in front of Yoichi's, his lidless green pupils staring right through her. "Provided - that you are willing to believe in that potential. Can you do that for me, Yoichi?"

"I-"
Yoichi stared into those beetle eyes, holding the giant's gaze with a wavering look. Then her face hardened, and she clenched her fists. Yoichi knew she wanted this. She wanted to be a hero. She wanted to be the kind of person that she wanted to be... not that her mother said she should be. Yoichi sniffed, but nodded firmly.
"I believe it. I... know I have potential. I've made a friend already... I think. I just... there's a voice. Her voice. It's in the back of my mind all the time... it's hard to ignore."
Yoichi frowned to herself, looking down at her lap, then back up at Gigabite with a strong, fierce gaze.
"But it's not me! I'm Gozen Yoichi, and I want to be a hero that helps people!"

Giga Bite clicked his smaller mandibles together. "This is your story. I will do everything in my power to ensure that that does not change."
Klaus leaned back in his chair, which groaned under his weight. "My door is always open, Yoichi. For anything." He paused, lingering on the girl's words. "Who is this friend that you have made? What are they like?"

"Thank you, Gigabite-sensei."
Yoichi wiped her eyes, smiling. She felt calmer already, breathing steady and eyes able to lift upwards, staring at the beetle hero.
"It's Kachiya, from class. She's really kind, very patient... Kachiya hasn't judged me for the things I don't know about."
She sighed, casting her eyes downwards again.
"Gigabite-sensei... you came from another country, right? Did you have trouble getting to know things when you arrived?"

A chirping noise escaped Klaus' mandibles. It sounded like a bell, singsong and content. "I am glad to hear that, Yoichi. You will want to build connections with your peers throughout the year. These connections will help you stay on your own path. Kachiya is a sweet girl. You two will get along splendidly." Klaus did not bother hiding his pride for the girl he spoke of. Kachiya had done a great deal to earn his respect, and it seemed, that of her classmates as well. If more students could be like Kachiya, then... ... well, his job would be much easier.
He lowered his head to meet Kachiya's. It was a little comical, seeing a giant individual like Klaus move like this, but it seemed like he was trying to whisper a secret to her, in a space that was already private. "There are still many things I do not know. Pocky?" He clicked his smaller mandibles, shaking his head. "I cannot fathom how the youth can eat the stuff. Today's sweets are too much for my palate." Klaus closed one eye, then opened it. The action looked... difficult for him, to say the least.
"Everyone in U.A. was afraid of me. They believed that I would eat them, or give them a whallop if I got angry. None of these things happened, but that did not matter for some people. Accepting my faults, no matter how real or imagined they were, was one of the hardest lessons I had to learn. Sadly, some people never learn this lesson."
Klaus moves one of his arms to briefly cradle Yoichi's chin. "But you already have. Do you know how I know?" He paused, allowing Yoichi to offer an answer if she so chose. Whether Yoichi answered or not, he would continue. "If you were not ready to speak about these things, you would not have come to my office."

"But that's what I mean! What is pocky?!"
Yoichi gritted her teeth, even as Gigabite cradled her chin, looking up at his large beetle head with wide, vulnerable eyes. She closed them for a moment, leaning into his hand.
"I know I'm behind... I know I have a massive disadvantage. I don't know anything that the other students do. They've grown up with parents who let them experience the outside world, and I feel like an alien!"
She wiped her eyes, feeling the prickly tears forming once again.
"I just don't feel like I can fit in. Kachiya is lovely and patient, but I can't expect everyone to be as kind as her. Koito, Shizo, Yann... they're all well-rounded, Quirks not withstanding. I feel like I've got to catch up on several fronts, and it's... it's so exhausting!"
Yoichi slumped back into her chair, looking again at the Beetle Hero with a fragile expression.
"I want to be a hero that helps people. If I can't relate to those that I save, then how can I help them? It feels like I'm wading upstream in a relentles river. I just... I just want to feel normal for once!"

Giga Bite allowed Yoichi to rest her head in his hand for a while longer. Too often he felt as Yoichi did now. This calling was just as much a curse as a blessing. No matter how many times Klaus did this, he felt himself the greatest failure of all when his students suffered, awash in the perfidy of adolescence. He could not always give them what they needed. Worse, he could not let on how he felt in those moments. More than anything, these children needed someone that they could trust, no matter the circumstance. Yoichi was not lost. Not in the slightest. How humble they make you...
The teacher gave Yoichi some time to reflect on what she had just said. Sometimes, all it took was to hear oneself to make a connection, or merely to find some respite from their troubles. "Between you and me..." He clicked his lesser mandibles twice, then a beat later- "No one is well-rounded. Not really." A couple of singsong chirps escaped his throat.
"Yoichi, I understand where this is coming from, but you do not have to catch up as much as you think. Personally, I do not think you need to catch up at all. The year has just started. Every student is discovering who they are at their own pace, including yourself." He raises an index finger, pointing it at Yoichi's chest. "The only normal you need, is what's in there."

Yoichi stared at Gigabite for what seemed like an age. Then she sat up, posture straight, and wiped her eyes again on the back of her sleeve. She looked down at herself; her new U.A. outfit was clean, well-ironed and crisp. She brushed a hand down the length of her jacket, then looked up again at the Beetle Hero. Her expression was firmer, looking less like a thin pain of glass and more like something that would survive the test of time.
"Yes. You're right."
She took a deep breath, then rose to her feet. Yoichi's gaze was steady, and there was something working in her mind.
"I think... I just need to accept that. Thank you, Gigabite-sensei. I'm sorry I've been such a handful already."
She bowed, her dark hair sweeping low as it fell about her head.
"I hope to live up to what this school deserves! I'll... I'll be a good hero. For myself. Nobody else! Then... I'll start helping. Once I'm a hero... I can leave my past behind."
She rose slowly, a tiny smile tugging at her lips.
"I hope all the teachers are as understanding as you."
