Physical Appearance:
Rey started as a spry sort, and she didn’t grow that much throughout puberty. What progress she did make she lost a few inches after her second year, leaving her just over five feet tall. This doesn’t seem to bother her at all. Rather, she seems to have taken it in stride. You wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at her, but Rey is remarkably athletic for her size. She cut her teeth in the Montana wilderness as a child, and her nature adventures only became bolder as she grew into adolescence. Though she doesn’t have the strength that many of her peers do, Rey is able to make do with a sturdy endurance and nimble footwork. Rey has fair skin, and wears round prescription glasses that rest over her pixie-like face. Her light brown hair is a little pixie-like too, though a little longer, branching out like the leaves of a plant beside and behind her head.
Civilian Clothes:
Rey’s Midwestern sense of fashion has stubbornly held onto her during her time in Japan. Flannels, hoodies, jeans, Vans, Rey continues to wear her American brands (or whatever she can get her hands on in Japan) with subtle pride. It isn’t that Rey thinks less of the culture that she has been learning under, but that her hometown style is simply that comforting to her. It helps that said style goes hand-in-hand with Rey’s outdoorsy nature.
Hero Outfit:
Rey’s Hero uniform as Sprout has two fits, one for lab work and another for the field. The former is a snazzy two-layer green-and-black jumpsuit, designed with comfort in mind. The material is a silky nylon fabric that Rey developed herself, which keeps her cool and comfortable. In addition to the clothing, Rey has a small AI drone that assists her with various tasks named Sybil, or “Syb”. Sybil has no offensive capabilities and is used for Support functions only, such as generating holographic displays for information processing or storing vials of chlorophyll for an emergency.
On the rare occasion that Rey needs to get directly involved, her lab outfit can transform into an inverted version that functions as a conventional Hero uniform. The fabric folds inward and projects its secret interior outward, which is an armor-plated exosuit with a similar color scheme, though now dominantly white. The white sections of the armor are high-caliber solar panels, maximizing Rey’s energy output while she’s out and about. Rey’s “Hero” equipment is limited to a handheld device that harnesses solar energy into a hardlight tensile cord that can be used as a whip, grappling hook, and so on. It is primarily used to facilitate Rey’s transportation, though it may be used to temporarily restrain (or rescue) a target.
Personality
Bad Habits: Rey doesn’t seem to have a single aggressive bone in her body, and is much more likely to let someone walk over her if it means avoiding a conflict. The last thing she wants is trouble, and if it can’t be solved without violence… well, she’s not sure what can be done, really. Violence simply isn’t in her nature. It’s for the best that Rey is in the Support track.
General Personality: Rey is a gentle carefree soul whose outlook, while admirable, may leave some scratching their heads as to why they’re at U.A. in the first place. She prefers to describe herself as an ordinary person, despite possessing a Quirk. She doesn’t seem to see much difference between those who have Quirks and those who don’t, preferring to see everyone as “beautiful individuals who each have their own spark of talent” rather than create superficial distinctions. If it wasn’t clear, Rey is quite artsy fartsy, and isn’t afraid to admit it. She can get overly florid with her language (oh God it’s already happening), often letting it get away from her if someone doesn’t tell her to tone it down. She can be candid when she wants to be, though earnestly rather than bluntly.
Rey is an unrepentantly curious sort, evidently at ease with her placement in Support. Though Rey has reluctantly come around to the necessity of Pro Heroes in society, Support operations and services is her one and true calling. Her Montana upbringing rubbed off on her, which only amplified her scientific mind once her Quirk activated. She is outspoken about environmental concerns, and does what she can to make her circles as conscious as she is about the rich plant and sea life around Japan. Rey’s passion has carried over into her rapidly approaching identity as a Support agent by way of the aesthetic and design of her equipment. Rey is a girl who likes to do her work in style, after all.
Personal Life
Mother:
Molly Burns, Actuary. Her Quirk is Bloomback Mountain, a mutation that causes flowers to sprout over her body.
Father:
Monty Burns, Automobile Entrepreneur. Quirkless.
Siblings:
Harvey Burns, 24. Quirkless.
Sean Burns, 14. Quirkless.
Extended Family:
The Burns family is spread out across the greater American Midwest, though the most notable is Rey’s eccentric Aunt Greta, known on the Pro Hero scene as Fizzwidget, is based in the Windy City as a member of the team stationed there.
History:
Rey was an exceptionally bright young boy, growing up as the middle child of a modest family. Neither of his brothers were Quirked, or any men in his family at that; though the Burns Quirks were all rather mild, they were a matrilineal line. That fact made it all the more unique when Rey’s Quirk revealed itself when he cut his knee during a hike and saw green instead of red. Though Rey had stuck fast to the natural sciences in his early age, his Quirk pushed him to study them even further. Although Rey’s brothers excelled in other ways, Rey quickly established the reputation of “the smart one”, for better or worse.
When it came time for school, it was generally for the worse. Rey’s intelligence painted a target on his back, as did his Quirk. While his parents had raised him well, Rey was firmly conflict-averse. This made it easy for bullies to walk all over him. Even if Rey didn’t have his Quirk, there were other aspects about him that did not align with Midwestern values. These difficulties were compounded by Rey’s decision not to tell the rest of his family what was going on, in an effort to avoid causing them pain. The day eventually came that Rey’s older brother saw him coming home with a broken arm. The next week, the bullies left Rey alone. That peace of mind helped Rey realize what he wanted to do. He had always wanted to help people, but more than anything, he wanted to make the most of his circumstances. He was the only child of his family that had a Quirk. Not one useful enough to become a Hero, but Rey didn’t need to become a Hero to help people. What he did need was training.
As much as Rey’s parents hoped otherwise, Montana did not have much in the way of providing the resources that their child needed. Schools like U.,A. did. Rey worked with his brothers on a project to get into the prestigious Hero school. Harvey was worried that U.A. wouldn’t accept someone with a Quirk as mild as his brother, though he certainly didn’t phrase it like that to Rey. It was a group project between the three of them, to show U.A. that Rey was one of the best students that they could possibly accept. That group project culminated in a transfusion battery that uses a plant’s biological systems to generate clean energy. Most of the work was done by Rey, while Harvey and Sean were there for moral support (and also helping putting it together and acquiring the materials). Rey was accepted into U.A. with full marks, Support.
It took some time for Rey to adjust to life in Japan. Their Japanese was terrible, and their unfamiliarity with the culture made for some tragic miscommunications. Thankfully, it did not take long for a ball of sunshine like Rey to find an orbiting introvert and hold onto them for dear life. The introvert in this case was Mitsukuni Sato, a serene, spacy boy in his Support class. In spite of their differences in personality, background, and even motivation for being at U.A., Rey and Mitsukuni established a fond friendship in the Support class. Rey was following the conventional Support track; he wanted to use his Quirk to better society through innovation and infrastructure. Mitsuukuni wanted to be on the same level as Heroes with more impressive Quirks than theirs. It wasn’t long before the two of them were inseparable.
Long before they had come to U.A., Rey had felt out of sorts with who they were. Knowing what they wanted to do was clear from the start: Rey was going to help people, no matter what. But who was Rey, outside of that? Rey knew that they shouldn’t define themselves solely by their career. Spending time with Mitsukuni in the Support track had made that especially clear. Things were new, different. Rey felt the same about themselves… had for a while now, actually. With the long-distance support of their family, and Mitsukuni’s in-person support, Rey was able to face that change within them at a local clinic. It was nice to meet the real Rey.
It is now Rey’s third year at U.A. Though it’s her last term, she knows she still has a lot to learn before she’s ready to join the ranks of the Support enterprise in full, if she even wants to stay in Japan. With Mitsukuni pursuing a Hero license in Japan, however, and everything else going on within Musutafu, Rey has begun to feel more confident about planting her roots here. Sprout will shine her light wherever she’s needed, and it looks like she’ll be needed right here.
Quirk
Name:
Chlorophyllic
Quirk Type:
Mutant
Power:
This Quirk takes “going green” to a whole other level! The user’s blood is infused with heavy concentrations of chlorophyll, to the extent that their biology resembles a plant’s as well as a human’s. While it is possible for humans to ingest chlorophyll as a pharmaceutical supplement, Chlorophyllic places such a heavy concentration of chlorophyll in Rey’s body that would otherwise be fatal. Being part-plant gives Rey a few useful traits:
Greenblood - Though it serves no purpose other than to exemplify the chlorophyll in her blood, Rey’s blood is colored dark green.
Photosynthesis - Rey gets far more nourishment from sunlight than consuming nutrients through food and drink. So long as she spends a significant portion of her day outside on a sunny day, or absorbs light through sun lamps or similar apparatus, Rey does not need to eat or drink. She may also consume nutrition bars containing similar ingredients as energy substitutions. They also do not need to sleep to restore their energy, making all-nighters a lot easier.
Plant Pathogens - The plant-like biology integrated in Rey’s system allows for additional disease resistance against foreign bodies. As a result, Rey has a higher resistance against toxins designed to target human immune systems. If these substances enter Sprout’s body, they take much longer to activate, if they aren’t completely rebuffed.
Supermoves:
N/A
Drawbacks:
Chlorophyllic is a Support-tier Quirk. It cannot be weaponized in any way, nor has Sprout attempted to do as much with her Quirk. What harms plants has a similar effect on Sprout’s personal health. She is more sensitive to heat, and she suffers symptoms similar to asthma if she is deprived of an environment rich in oxygen and carbon dioxide (to a more sensitive degree than ordinary humans). Chemicals designed for killing plants will severely affect Sprout’s physical health, and may even place them in cardiac arrest. While Sprout may not necessarily need to eat if her needs are satisfied by sufficient sunlight, she also needs a profuse amount of water. This can either be consumed normally, or absorbed through her pores. Because of this, Sprout will sometimes take multiple showers a day.
Fighting Style:
Sprout is a lover, not a fighter (or, as she would have you believe, a friender). She doesn’t know the first thing about combat, and in the times where her hand was forced, Sprout stalled the situation until an adult could come to resolve the conflict… or she ran away. She can’t use her Quirk to defend herself, though she has made a variety of gadgets that could be used in an emergency to remove herself from a situation. Otherwise, Rey is no better than an ordinary high school student.
