Ballywood Island was a simple place. Located in the west blue, the island was of medium size, large enough to have multiple open fields, plateaus, and towns within; yet small enough that one could sail entirely around the island within two days. In all honesty, the island's most prominent feature is that it had a cove that resembled a pair of horns stretching out into the sea. Outside of that, it was also a vital place to buy and sell various meats, beef, livestock, and leather. It was also where the infamous and common design, the cowboy hat originated from. To be honest; it's significance was high, but because it was only a community of ranchers and townsfolk who occupied the island; the marines rarely ever needed any significant presence upon the island, this the need for a naval base was never required here.
This was also the birth place and home of Joan A Wale. A young woman who was now preparing to set out on her own. As opposed to what her many brothers wanted, she dreamed of heading out to sea due to the stories she was told as a kid....
However, at the moment it was closing in on the evening. In the Wale family cot, a fairly sizable home that was more long and wide than tall; the family was setting the table, preparing to have a meal of green beans, potatoes, and beef on the bone, specifically cowboy steaks as they were called. "Dinner time!" Their mother called, a woman with red short and curly hair that was covered by a folded cloth to shade her head. She rang a triangle, the sound echoing into the distance as the sun prepared to set.

Joan had resolved to keep helping with the ranch right up until the time came to leave, so despite having pretty much everything ready now (with the boat and supplies conveniently stowed away in the same cove she'd happened to shelter Zane in almost a decade ago), currently she was out fixing a fence that had been struck by a freak stroke of lightning last night. Specifically, she was driving in a new post with her bare hands, before hammering the boards and wire into place between it and the two neighboring posts. Boards to make sure the border of the field was clearly defined, wire to keep the cattle from trampling through.
She looked up heard the triangle ring, and smiled, but bent her attention back to finishing her task before brushing off her hands, gathering up what few tools she'd needed to do this, and heading off back home as the sun started dipping below the horizon. When she got back, she stowed the tools in the shed, and then, despite the fact she was a bit dusty and dirty and possibly even a little sweaty from a hard day's work, came in to give her mother a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "Hey Ma, the fence is fixed," she said with a broad grin on her face. Her stomach growled right at that moment, quite ready to dig into the veritable feast her nose could smell. She licked her lips in anticipation. "That smell is mouth-watering. I'm gonna to miss yer cooking when I leave."

Ma smiled at the peck on the cheek, and welcomed her daughter inside. Her siblings were already seated, and waiting for their middle sister. Their father was already at the head, smacking the eldest's hand for attempting to sneak a roll from the basket. Of course, stepping in, and then saying that she'd miss her mother's cooking, it instantly quieted the family at the table. A worrying look passed Ma's face, while Da seemed a bit unhappy but didn't say anything. The only one who did was the eldest brother. "You can't be serious Joan."
Ma couldn't take it anymore with the brother piping up. "Mathew Cooper mentioned you bought a dingy from him..... Are you really gonna go? I mean, you don't even know how to sail, let alone navigate. Just wait a bit longer dear, at least til we can find you a good teacher." She'd pull Joan over to the table and sat her down, before taking a seat herself. Joan knew Ma was just trying to delay her. No one on Ballywood would teach her anything if she didn't have the money to pay for expensive navigation lessons. While her family wasn't poor, a majority of the funds were used to raise cattle, buy food, and pay for the land taxes. Even if Joan did find a navigator to teach her, not only would she need equipment, but she'd be forced to either join the marines, or abide by lessons that could be day, week, or month long breaks as ships rarely stayed for any longer than they necessarily needed to.
Before Joan could say anything, her father held up his hands in prayer, and spoke without a second's hesitation as Ma sat. "Lord we thank you for this food, and the bountiful harvest. We ask for your continued protection of our family and our herd, and for the safe travels of all those closest to us."
The last part wasn't normally in the dinner prayer, which only meant one thing. Ma looked towards Da and the man didn't look at her, as though to say he wouldn't talk about it. The younger two didn't seem to notice what the last words had meant, but the elder two brothers did. They looked at Da in disbelief, their mouths agape.
Pa looked to Joan, almost expectantly after a moment.

Joan quietly sighed as her family had, honestly, reaction she should have expected, though their disapproval didn't keep her down for long as the smile slowly crept back onto her face. A patient smile for her mother's sake, but a smile nonetheless, even as she gave a derisive snort in her brother's direction. "Shut it, Fin," she mumbled with a brief eyeroll at him, but without the smile never once leaving her face even during her mother's concerned advising. She would have tried to reassure her, but before she could get a real word in edgewise, her father started saying grace, and she bowed her head respectfully until he was done.
She did not expect him to grant his implicit blessing in the course of praying over their meal, though, and the moment it was done, she said 'amen' as was custom, and lifted her head to look him in the eyes, her own a little wider than normal, practically sparkling with happiness. She had definitely caught what he meant. "Thank you," she breathed softly, and if they hadn't just sat down for their dinner, she would have gotten up to give him a hug as her way of thanks. She just gave him that grateful look instead, for now.
Though judging by his look, he expected something from her, perhaps? In the middle of her sparkling grin, she cocked her head, curious but not sure if she should ask here or not. With a mental shrug, she turned from him, to Ma, confident if he had something more to say to her, he'd find a time and place to say it. In the meantime, she tried her best to reassure her mother. "I promise, Ma, I'll be as careful as I can. I watched Mr. Cooper use it more than once while I was down at the beach, I'm sure I have the basics down." And she was much bigger than he was, she would have a much easier time wrestling things into place if they needed to be. She was nothing if not confident about this venture. "Besides, if I capsize, you know I'll just float back to shore," she tried to joke, to relieve the tension. Of course she'd do more than float, she was a strong swimmer, but the point was to (hopefully) get a laugh.

Pa was more watching her reaction, and at the grin and tilt of her head, he sighed, before clarifying; "Amen." Digging in, Ma looked disheartened, while Fin looked sour. Her second eldest brother was too busy stuffing his face, as were the two younger; before Joan reassured her mother. Of course, neither Ma or Pa found her joke funny, before Fin interrupted, "Just cause they're lettin' you go doesn't mean you should joke about that. Sailing to go fishin' is one thang, but going out into open sea! Just how crazy are you Joan?! You're gonna end up like Uncle Waldo!" Fin's outburst was a bit uncalled for, and Joan had never heard about an Uncle Waldo. The older brother looked a bit sorrowful, but what really made an impact was how both Ma and Pa reacted. "Shut up Fin." Pa responded, his expression growing dark and bitter. Ma seemed even more worried now, especially with how much she saw her daughter joking about this entire situation.
"She's not ready Johnathan. I'm sure Mr.Cooper would buy it back no problem if you ask." Ma pleaded with Pa as she seemed even more desperate to keep her daughter here. Pa slammed a fork on the table, immediately grabbing everyone's attention. It was rare for Pa to ever have outbursts like this. Especially during dinner. "No.... This is Joan's decision... If I tell her no, then I gotta tell everyone else no when they go to pursuit their own life, whether it's here at the ranch, as a deputy for the sheriff, or anything else even when I think they aren't ready yet." It was made clear at this point. Pa had only given his grace under principle rather than anything else.
"Now..... No more of this. Joan... we're gonna have a chat in the barn after dinner." He stated, before looking to the rest of the siblings, "Alone." A single command from Pa made it clear he wasn't gonna deal with people not listening to him. The rest of the meal would go by for what seemed like an eternity. Honestly, it was a fairly big meal, more than usual. Once everyone stopped talking about Joan's choice, they told various things about their day. Fin stating that the cows were doing well and no predators was bothering anyone nearby; the older bother stating that his girlfriend and him had hung out most of the day and were thinking of buying a plot and getting married by march. The younger brother commented on how his cork gun aim was improving as he had hit three cans in a row without missing, and the younger sister stating that she found the newly hatched chicks to be cute as buttons. In the moment, everything seemed to be normal. No indication that tomorrow would and could likely be the last time she saw her family in a while.
Once everything was done, and the dishes were cleaned; Joan would see her old man stepping out. It seemed that the time was now.
Once she stepped outside, she'd see Pa dragging out a pair of hay bales, sitting on one while the other was in front of him. The lantern had moths fluttering about it, as he waited for Joan. "This could be the last time we talk.... So make it count. I'll answer any questions you got. Anything you want to get off your chest, now's the time. Cause by First Light if you're not gone from the house, I'm gonna ask Mr.Cooper to take his boat back." Pa stated as a matter of fact. He was usually the first up, and awake by first light. In short, he was wanting her to be ready to set sail before he woke up. He was always this way. If you showed reluctance, you got left behind, or he took matters into his own hands. Fin had trouble putting one of the injured calves down, and when Fin didn't pull the trigger in time, Pa did. A simple sentence that Fin took to heart. "If you say you're gonna do something, Do it. Cause each second it only gonna be a second you're a liar. I don't raise Liars in my household." Pa was a stern man, and at times he ruled the house with an iron fist; but he was never tyrannical beyond reason. After all, every second that calf was suffering a broken leg, was another second it was in pain.

When Fin tried to scold her again, she just rolled her eyes and ignored him, as she usually did. She was used to her jokes sometimes falling flat, not everyone got her sense of humor, and she was fine with that, though now she got the sense maybe she'd missed something Pa was trying to say, and it occupied her thoughts for much of the meal, though this mention of an Uncle Waldo she'd never heard of perked her interest as well, mainly due to her parents' actions. That seemed to be a subject they didn't care to discuss here. And Pa's outburst, too, that was unusual. So many things unusual about tonight, and she definitely got the feeling much of it was due to her imminent departure--and that Pa did not approve of her current choices, he was simply standing by his principles even when they were difficult. For that, she had all the more respect for him, and appreciation.
All in all, she was fairly quiet herself for the rest of dinner, mind half on various thoughts, half on the chatter of her siblings. She smiled as Risso bragged about his aim, and Bryde gushed over the baby chickens, even Sowerby announcing his plans to get married and start his own place. That was another thing she was going to miss. She did like company and talk among family and friends, she just felt the call of adventure, looking for old friends, more than the call to stay here where she was comfortable. There was only so much stretching her legs she could do here, and it wasn't like her siblings couldn't help with the ranch when she was gone, so it wasn't a practical loss for the family, either, more an emotional one, concern for her well-being. She wasn't so carefree as to miss that this all did come out of concern for her, and it made her feel warm inside at the reminder they did all care, in their own ways.
She did spare an acknowledgement to her father when he mentioned a chat later. When he said something like that to one of them, in that way, it was as solid a command as a king dictating orders to his subjects. She had no intention of defying him, and the moment the dishes were washed, she followed him out.
When there she let him say his piece, knowing it would do no good to interrupt even if she felt she needed to, taking the offered seat, and giving him her full, undivided attention, leaning forward with chin on her hand and elbow on her knee, like she had done since she was a child on those occasions she recognized as serious and/or requiring some thought. "Yessir." For a moment she wasn't sure what she wanted to say, but then the words just started pouring out. "I'm not doing this just 'cause I wanna explore," she admitted with an explosive ssigh. "I've a debt I wanna repay, to someone who is far, far away from 'ere. You 'member that hullabaloo 'bout 9 years ago?" She gave a slightly sheepish grin. "The one where people thought there were a monster? Even Fin and Sowerby were caught up in the ruckus. Well, 'tweren't no monster like they all said, t'were a fishman. T'was he who taught me how to scrap proper, why none of my brothers could wrassle me proper anymore after. He moved on 'fore anyone could find him, but I wanna find him now, and help him too, somehow." Only when she was done did she stop to take another breath. It felt good to tell at least one person the full story, why she wanted to leave, and she was sure her father would understand her desire, a need, to repay a debt. It was one of those values both parents had instilled in their entire brood, you don't just accept charity, you always find a way to help the person who helped you, or pass the debt on by helping someone else who would go on to help another, and so forth.
While she was busy catching her breath, she fell silent, but then, a question of her own just popped out before she realized her thoughts had turned to it again. "Who's Uncle Waldo?" She wondered if there was some important life lesson in this story that hadn't been mentioned to her before.

Pa listened, giving her the same amount of respect as she had shown him. He looked at the girl before him. She was serious about her choice, and he knew why. What he hadn't expected was for her to try and give a reason as well. Smiling softly like he had when she was younger and brazenly honest, he shook his head.
"Girl, did you really think your old man wouldn't have known where his only baby girl at the time was heading off to? Only reason I didn't stop that man was because I knew what he was, an' that he didn't mean no harm. Convincin' these folks though was another story. Plus, i figured if you decided not to tell yer old pa, you had something to protect. Made sure to have a talk with that man and set the line too." He grinned lightly with a twinkle in his eye. "Ya ma's job is ta take care of ya. Mine is ta keep my eye on y'all amd make ya strong. If you thought silence was the answer, then I figured you'd take it to the grave. Glad you still decided to clear things out... Just not this way."
Pa seemed to adjust in his seat a bit at the mention of Waldo however. "Figured you'd ask that. Fin shoulda kept his mouth shut, but that's too late I suppose. Boy's gonna get himself in trouble one day for openin' that mouth." the older man commented, before closing his eyes. "Waldo was my older bother. You heard how the ranch was passed down to me, but originally I wasn't gonna get it.... Waldo was. My pa, your long dead grandpa that you never met; he wasn't one to break tradition. Waldo was suppose to inherit the land, but it didn't go well because he had other plans in mind. He wanted to sail the seas. He wanted to find the One Piece. You were born a year before Jolly Devil was executed.... it was that same year Waldo found and ate some strange lookin' fruit. When he did, he began to act different.... began to want to find something. Then before me or my pa could stop him, he won a boat in some kinda bet; and set sail.... we found wreckage of the boat a few days later... ended up killing my Pa. Broke his poor heart. He gave the ranch to me, and disowned my brother for putting him in his death bed. After that I saw Waldo in the Most Wanted Papers. He'd changed his name, but he was still alive. So I made it so we honored my Pa's last words. We wouldn't talk about Waldo.... only exception is that I said I'd answer anything you wanted. So I'm doing that now. I don't mind whatever business you gotta do, but do me a favor. Don't go underestimatin' the big blue. She's violent, oppressive, and deceitful when you least expect it." Pa stated, looking his daughter in the eye as he said so. Those eyes were filled with a sorrowful resentment as he spoke about his brother. Still, Joan had never seen any wanted poster with the name Waldo on it, nor their family name.
"Well..... Do you got anything else you want to ask?"

She cocked her head slightly to one side, surprised for the first time in a long while at learning one of her parents knew about far more than she'd expected too. That her pa had, at some point without her finding out, talked to Zane himself. That was the most surprising thing, but she was pleased nonetheless that he held no ill will toward the man who had taught her. Her smile widened with each word until she was grinning practically from ear to ear, and she even launched herself off her hay bale to give him a quick, tight hug, something she hadn't done with him since she was half her current age, but quickly she regained control of herself and sat back down to let him explain about this black sheep of the family, once again, giving him time to explain without interruptions.
Only when he had clearly finished, did she nod, managing, for a moment, to look suitably solemn. "I swear on ya, Pa, an' Ma, I'll respect tha' blue," she said, uncharacteristically soft and quiet as she made her promise. Of course she could already feel her heart beat in excitement, but that didn't mean she didn't understand there was danger involved; one did not disrespect the elements, just as one never turned their back on a rattler. And just as seriously, but with the light of curiosity back in her eyes, she had only one more question. He'd mentioned Waldo had changed his name, which would explain why she'd never seen their family name on any of the wanted posters.
"What did...what'd Uncle Waldo call hisself after leavin'?" Perhaps changing his name was a sign that he hadn't wanted to cause more trouble for the rest of them? She could keep an eye out for him regardless, and make up her own mind if she ran into him.

Pa hadn't been expecting his daughter to hug him, but didn't exactly push her away, instead letting the moment happen and enjoying it as it could be the last time he ever holds his daughter.
On the note of her response to the blue, he nodded. "Right.....," before he held his chin in an attempt to remember. "It's been so long since we saw the wanted poster, and we stopped seeing not even 2 years later. We assumed he might be caught, since bounties grow over time the longer someone is left uncaptured. considering it's been 20 years, his bounty would be fairly large, but nothing changed. My Pa couldn't even stomach Waldo's wanted poster... I do know that he still kept his cowboy hat even after all this time, and he had a scar on his left eye. That could describe anyone really, but if you do meet him, he'll likely look a bit like myself, though with a mustache. Reason I only ever grow a short beard. A few times bounty hunters thought I was Waldo, and tried to turn me into the sheriff. Those days I went to the town with some strangers was what that was. It stopped two years after, but yeah. Sheriff was happy I wasn't visiting him every month or two." He chuckled, before his face sunk in sadness....
"I guess I can't call you my baby girl anymore. You've gone and grown up into a woman....." With that, he reached behind the haybale, before pulling out a holster and pistol. "Here.... Something for your travels. It was Waldo's and left it behind.... He had a strange fascination with horns, so I reckon if you see him again, he ought to recognize it. That said..... You can sleep where you want to... unless you got something else you want to ask, but be quick. You know how Ma worries I'll catch a cold being out for too long."
The pistol was what you'd expect, being a flintlock, but it's design suggested that it wasn't constructed normally. Parts were hinged, allowing one to quickly reload it using break action; and the handle was made of a bull's horn as opposed to wood like most guns. What's more was the longhorn symbol burnt into the top of the handle, clear as day. It shown with a finishing coat, and honestly was a nice looking weapon in and of itself. Pa stood up, before reaching over to hug his Joan back. "I ain't one to tell you what to do anymore, but one last goodbye won't hurt." He said, waiting to see if she had any further questions, before heading back inside.

She felt happiness bubble up when he accepted the hug. He didn't always accept physical affection so she treasured each moment he did. she was still giddy when he answered her question, even if his answer gave her food for thought. She'd wondered about that time. Now things made much more sense--and she knew what kind of appearance to look for, in theory, assuming Uncle Waldo hadn't changed yet again. Either that or he'd been jailed as Da had supposed, she figured. She even nodded when he brought up the Sherrif. Yeah, that man didn't take kindly to people wasting his time, in her experience.
Satisfied with her answer, she had been about to rise, but when it became clear Da had something more to say, she paused, and sat again, watching him curiously as he handed her a pistol and its holster. That curiosity led her to inspecting it with expert hands, surprised at some of the features she found. This was an expertly made weapon, she could tell, crafted with love and care by whoever had made it, and showed signs of being well-cared for, as well, by whoever had used it.
Honestly, she was in a bit of awe of it--but that awe was superseded by the fact Pa initiated a hug. Pa. Not to mention he'd called her grown up. Despite herself, she felt tears well up in her eyes, and hugged him fiercely up to the moment he let go. She wiped her eyes furiously, getting hold of herself, and gave him a smile, and two thumbs up. "Thank you Da, I'll try not ta make ya and Ma worry, nor do anything to make ya ashamed." she promised, for once entirely serious. It was clear that what he'd said happened to Waldo was strongly on her mind, even though the desire to set out was as strong as ever. "I think tha's everythin,'" she said, maintaining that smile. "Thank you," she said again, more quietly, and waved as he turned to leave.
As excited as she was to leave she was still going to miss them fiercely, and she felt the tears well up again once he was out of sight, once again using her sleeve to wipe them away, but this time, they refused to stop until they were good and ready. Almost reverently, she fastened the holster around her waist, slipping the pistol back into its place. she might end up using this more than the guns she already had stashed away with her supplies.
With a final sigh as the tears finally abated, she turned to head away, to the cove where she'd stashed the boat and those supplies, including the weapons she didn't already have on her person. No use in drawing this goodbye out longer than necessary, she decided. That would just make it harder for everyone. Wouldn't be the first time she'd slept under the stars so she shouldn't have a problem getting rest, and she could set sail just before first light. She had no doubt Pa would keep his word if she hadn't left by then. She intended to show him she was a woman of her word, not that she thought he'd had any doubts before now that she was just such a person.

Neither Ma nor Pa saw her as she left, though in the house, everyone looked a bit pained. It was hard saying goodbye to family. Especially if you didn't know when you'd see them again. The two younger siblings noticed the mood and fell into place, though they'd look out the window confused as Joan began to walk away. Ma kept her head to the side, as she shut the shutters so the twins understood that it was better not to watch. For the first time in all of their lives, Joan's siblings would see their Pa's eyes red and wet, as he struggled to keep his tears from flowing, to no avail. Ma could only console him, by grabbing his hand, and telling him this. "It'll be a'right. She'll come back. I know it. She'll make it out there." Despite her own worries, she knew that Joan was her father's child; and that she'd swim across the sea to get back home if she had to.
As Joan moved along, she'd find that the moon being out, and the lack of lights from her home, she could see clearly enough, to notice the outline of the cattle herd in the distance. The wide expanse seemed strangely empty without the sounds of Prairie dogs, the occasional rattle of a snake in the distance, or even the sight of a tumbleweed. Everything was perfectly quiet and clear.......
Moving along, Joan would eventually reach near the border of her family's land. Beyond it a few more hundred feet, was the rocky coast that she'd need to follow towards the cave where the cove was located. However, in the moonlight, Joan would notice something. The fence was moved, two planks were removed from the post. It wasn't the same as the one she had repaired which had been struck by freak lightning.

It really was a quiet night, Joan thought, almost supernaturally still, and she couldn't suppress a small shiver down her spine. IT was as if the world was holding its breath now, to see how her adventure started. It was remarkably clear as well, about as well-lit a night as one could hope for, and her eyes already fairly adjusted to the light level. Almost right away, the moment it came into sight, she saw the break in the fence.
Almost right away. her eyes narrowed. That wasn't an accident or design of nature, that was clearly the work of human hands, and immediately her thoughts went to rustlers. Usually not a huge problem, but they were a perennial pest all ranchers had to occasionally deal with. One hand rested by instinct upon the holstered pistol, the other on her lasso, ready to pull whichever one she needed at a moment's notice before she reluctantly let go of the pistol. Whoever this was, was most likely interested in not making a scene if they had entered the property from this far out, and thus preferring to do this quietly. Odds were good they weren't armed with guns, at least, so she could probably take them without too much bloodshed.
So she crouched and tread as softly as she could as she approached the break in the fence, looking for bootprints, hoofprints, and other signs of passage, as well as any indication which direction the intruders had taken and how many there might be. She also took care with each step not just for the sake of being quiet, but to avoid trodding on any of the evidence her eyes were searching the ground for.

Looking at the markings on the ground and inspecting for tracks, Joan could tell that whoever it was it was likely multiple people, and what's more they weren't normal country folk. Most knew better than to wear dress shoes out in the wilderness; much less when traveling discretely, so their tracks were clear as day.... night.... moonlight.... whatever it was. However, Joan could also tell that they hadn't gone very far into the premise. The tracks seemed to more scout things, checking the local area, bushes, and even an abandoned tortoise burrow. Whatever they were doing, they weren't local, nor did they seem interested in heading deeper in, as their tracks continued on back towards town. Following where they had come from, it was obvious they had likely been following the border of the fence.
Whatever the reason for these trespassers to have chosen to do something this stupid as to leave the fence down, they definitely didn't seem to be scouting, but rather searching. None the less, with the tracks that left leading towards town, Joan could at least fix the fence, or perhaps she could try and track down these trespassers. There were multiple options, but for once she didn't have Pa to give her advice, or instruction. This was entirely her choice on what to do, as her boat was still waiting for her in the cove.

Dress shoes? That was, as Fin might say, a real head-scratcher. What were city-slickers doing out here? More importantly, what had they been looking for that only took them in a little way and then back wherever they'd come from without even fixing what they'd done to the fence? Almost certainly, they'd decided they wouldn't find what they were looking for, but it was still rude of them to be so careless, not to mention trespass without permission and risk the loss of a piece of the locals' livelihood even if it hadn't been her own family. Joan did not have the tools on hand to do a proper job of it this time, but she took a few hurried seconds to prop up the removed planks as best she could as a makeshift fix. The cattle were currently far from this part of the pasture, there should be time, either to convince these rude neighbors to come fix what they'd done, or for a family member to come along and fix it themselves in the morning.
After a few seconds, figuring she'd done what she could with her bare hands (and after all it wasn't like the fence was fully broken), she turned to follow the tracks, picking up her pace a bit, hoping to catch up and have a talk with the intruders before they made it back to town. Whoever they were, they weren't rustlers, so she had less concern over being subjected to violence when they realized they had been discovered.

Fixing the Fence was fairly easy, as it seemed the men hadn't destroyed it, more than simply knocked the wood out of it's socket. Even a quick smack with her fist, Joan was able to put the fence back up enough that it'd hold out in most cases unless someone dislodged it on purpose again. Following the tracks towards the distance lights of the town, Joan wouldn't be able to find her quarry along the way, however at the town, it wasn't hard to imagine where they had likely gone.
The local town of Salty Rocks was a simple place. It had a Tavern where one could drink and rest up if they had the Berries for it; the local bank which people often times stored their berries or applied for loans for land; a Saloon where one could entertain themselves with alcohol, food, and gambling; the Sheriff's office which also acted as the local jail for the drunken and disorderly; as well as several other establishments, ranging from the barber shop, to the general goods and feed store. Salty Rock had anything one coming into port could want for a short stay to spend their money and trade goods. Of course, that was also where the tracks lead to. While most people wore the standard attire for ballywood residents, usually being tough jeans and linen to dresses and frilled gowns with reds and blues for either gender; and usually a hat to shade themselves from the sun it was clear who was and wasn't local. Two men sat down in the Saloon, both of them wearing black suits with ties. Formal wear for the grieving usually, but these were far more sharp than depressing. One man wore a short rimed hat, a fedora. The other simply had shades on, and slicked back hair. Both were on the hunt for something, and both were feeling frustrated as they had searched a majority of the local area where they had last heard about random lightning strikes.
"Malcom, you sure we ain't waste'n our time out here in the middle of bum heck no where?" The slicked back man said to the fedora wearing one. "No Dillan, I'm not sure, but do you want to be the one to report to the boss that we lost that stupid animal?" Malcom said to the slick haired man, taking a drag of his cigarette before checking his shoes, and wiping them down again. "I swear this dirt gets everywhere on my shoes. I'm gonna be finding this red shit in it for days." Malcom grumbled as he complained to himself. The pair were more nursing drinks than eating. This entire trip of tracking down their target had taken them all over the west blue, as they attempted to chase any leads on freak thunderstorms or lightning strikes. Half of the time they were from weeks or months ago; which only served to irritate the two more.
"I'm telling you Malcom, it's a wild goose chase. I don't wanna tell the boss, but we've been at this for too long. How do we even know that damn animal is even alive now?" Dillan complained, as the doors to the saloon opened once more.
