As the truck slid into computer banks, guards, barrels and anything else that was unlucky enough to be in its way, Captain America was already pushing forward. Bullets began to fire, but their target was behind an inch of solid Vibranium shield, held before him as he took purposeful steps towards the group. No normal bullet but penetrate his shield, and it was no more evident than right here.
As the Shade made his presence known, Cap used the opportunity to shift gear. He sprinted the remaining distance, shield slamming hard into one of the men, swiping the legs from another, grabbing one rifle by the barrel and thrusting it hard into the owner's face to stagger him backwards. Steve released his shield, and it hit several guards one after another in quick succession before he grabbed it from the air.
"Not a bad start..."
He would deal with the remaining guards, and then follow the truck down the corridor and the trail of destruction it left behind. Whatever they were hiding, it would now be locked down tight. He didn't have long to reach it.

The Shade, largely due to Steve being who he was, did not have to do much more and only watched him make short work of the guards. "No, not bad; you came this far without triggering the alarm." The Shade said with a slight smile, using the shadows to follow the captain as he descended the tunnel. They would not get far before they heard a loud crash, moments later finding that the truck had rammed into a wall. They passed small corridors which led to what looked like laboratories of different kinds, and a few times along the way, more soldiers intercepted them... which was not much of a problem for their combined efforts. It did not take long before the tunnel became more rock than metal, as it had been excavated; it was also the only place large enough for a truck to fit into... but not enough to let it turn. "I don't wish to alarm you, Captain," said The Shade in a tone that one might use to talk about the weather. "But, I believe a large force is following us. It would not be a far stretch to think that all security in the whole place has been called down upon us. Maybe..." The Shade stopped mid-sentence as his eyes widened slightly. A faint green glow started to reflect on the walls as they came further down. Moments later, the tunnel broke into a larger cave; inside, workers manned a large excavator, and another truck was standing close to the mouth of the cave. The source of the glow was a large pond of vibrantly green liquid, roughly the size of a small swimming pool. A.I.M had built machines going into the liquid and walkways crossing it on several places. It was blatantly clear they were studying it. "An unrefined Lazarus Pit..." Said the Shade, and for the first time, he sounded genuinely shocked. He had expected anything else, but the notion that A.I.M had found something like this was not even close to what he had imagined. Of course, there was no time to stand around, as the soldiers inside the cave, warned by the alarm, quickly started to open fire upon the two intruders. The workers and scientists dived for cover behind boulders and vehicles.

Steve smiled as the Shade complimented him. There were worse allied to have. Whatever his motives, the Shade wasn't an unpleasant man, and their paths seemed to go towards the same direction. For now. As they met more resistance, Steve watched the way he fought, his ability. That meant Oracle did, too. He finished off a guard, laying him flat with a well-placed uppercut.
"This must be the right place, then. It doesn't look much like the rest of the facility, but-"
Steve stopped short as his eyes met the pit, carved out of the rock in the very centre of a large cavern. The words "Lazarus pit" meant nothing to him, but he heard Oracle swearing under her breath. Not a good thing, then.
More gunfire. Steve raised his shield, taking cover behind a stalagmite.
"Oracle, talk to me. What's a Lazerus pit? Why are A.I M. putting so many guards here for it?"

"Bad news," Oracle replied, with her voice slightly distorted. "Have you ever heard of the Fountain of Youth? That might give you an idea of what it is. They are mystical restorative pools capable of instantly healing injuries, resurrecting the dead, and even granting immortality to those who bathe in them." There was a pause. "If A.I.M seeks to use it, that can only be bad news. This is serious; they could do a lot of damage if they were given the power of Immortality. We have enough trouble with those immortals already running around. The last thing we need is more of them."
The Shade, and as he was being fired upon, used his powers over darkness to summon a portal, causing the shots to go inside, only to appear moments later from another direction, returning the fire to the attacks and forcing them to take shelter. If A.I.M had found a Lazarus Pit, it was serious for sure. He was not part of the conversation between the Captain and Oracle; he knew it was her because Steve had said her name. Still, he could make an educated guess that he was given the rundown of what the pit was... Oracle, of all people, would be very familiar with it.
"I've only seen it in the hands of Ra's al Ghul", The Shade commented, summoning a few shadow hands to slam some of the guards into the ground. Richard had not been talking to Ra's for a few years but was very familiar with the nature behind his old friend's longevity. He did NOT like the idea of a group like A.I.M getting their hands on a Lazarus Pit. So something had to be done. " And I would not recommend going for a swim in it, as it can have a very corrupting effect on the mind and soul and cause a person to break out into uncontrollable rage, Lazarus Fever they call it."

Steve listened to them both, as bullets hammered around him, taking chunks from the stalagmites and causing dust to rain down over him. It sounded a lot like a very familiar situation, eighty-odd years before. Red Skull had tried to control a power far beyond him... and here they were again. He felt a small prick of anger inside of him. Did people really not change? Was every generation destined to have their share of powerful, greedy idiots? He knew little of A.I.M., as secretive an organisation as it was disruptive, but whoever was pulling the strings obviously had more in mind than what they let on. He focused his attention towards Shade, holding his own with his shadow abilities.
"Time to get down to brass tax, Shade. Are we on the same page here? This Lazarus pit can't fall into A.I.M.'s hands, or anyone elses. I need to know I can trust you, because the way that I see it... the only way to take this pit off the playing field is to bring the entire cave down on top of it."
Steve rose swiftly, hurling his shield at the guards, bouncing between them as he sprinted to the next piece of cover. His eyes focused on the pit. What could they be trying to do?
"And if you're looking to take this for your own gain, or whoever you're working for... then I guess this is where we part ways as temporary allies. I'd rather have you on side, but not if it's compromising my position. Is that clear?"
He clenched his jaw, grabbing his shield as it returned to him behind cover. Steve didn't know enough about the Shade to continue. What if he took out A.I.M., but that allowed the man to do what he liked? He had to find a way to make sure they were both fighting the same fight.

The Shade glanced at Captain America from the corner of his eyes, using an opening to grab another guard and fling them across the cave. Seeing the shadow demon's eyes behind his sunglasses was impossible, but he smiled after a few tense seconds and took off the sunglasses, revealing the eyes of the man beneath them—a symbolic gesture, if ever there was one.
" And risk going up against the might of Captain America? Perish the thought, dear boy. I'm in this with you to the end, now more than ever." He shook his head, protecting himself with another barrier as more soldiers arrived at the cave. "I've got no use for this pool, and I can assure you that neither has my employer. Besides, I've enjoyed our little partnership so far, and it would be a shame to end it on a sour note."
Richard was starting to enjoy himself. It was not often he got to "kick about" like this and against so many convenient targets. That being said, he only knocked them out; he was a gentleman, not a murderer. If Cap wanted to bring the place down, who was The Shade to stifle him?
"It will have to be extreme to prevent them from digging it out again. My powers are yours, Captain. What do you have in mind?" The Shade was curious to see what Steve's plan might be. If he had one, or if he would just go by the seat of his pants. Besides, Richard would be doing Ra's a favour by keeping the Lazarus Pit outside of the hands of the "unworthy". Still, he would have to contact his old friend once all this was over... this might not be the only location where A.I.M was poking around after all.

"Great. That makes my job a lot easier."
Steve nodded with affirmation as Shade removed his glasses. Many called Captain America gullible, and perhaps that was the case, but Steve Rogers took everyone and everything at face value. A man's word was his word, and I'd he broke that then he wasn't worth the ground he stepped on.
As bullets continued to hail towards them, he pointed a finger upwards at the cavern ceiling. Steve didn't know enough about the Lazarus Pit to think about destroying it, but there was a way to take it off the board for A.I.M. and anyone else with their eyes set on it.
"They've been clearing this whole place out to get here, right? So they must have stored a hell of a lot of dynamite or explosives somewhere. If we can get to it and rig it to blow... then we bury this pit and all of A.I.M.'s resources under several miles of earth."
Steve looked towards the guards, still advancing and firing on their position.
"I'll need your help. I can hold back these forces, but if they keep coming then we'll have no chance. Use your shadow-manipulating abilities to find their stored explosives. You can rig them up for an explosion and then get out of here. That just leaves me to clear a path for my escape."
Steve frowned as he looked towards the guards. It felt wring to be condemning many of these men to death... but if the Lazarus pit was anything like what Oracle and Shade thought, then it was too dangerous to leave it exposed. They had chosen to join A.I.M., hadn't they? He paused, then pressed a finger to his ear.
"Oracle... any chance you can rig the emergency alarm in this place? They must have one. I want as many personnel out of here before this place gets blown to hell. Can you do that for me?"

"Very well," said Richard, sending out a wave of dark energy to throw a group of soldiers into a wall. "I'll see what I can do. Do try not to die while I'm gone." There was a slight smile before The Shade vanished into the cave's darkness.
Richard was unsure where one might find explosives, so it would take him a little time to find them. The facility was on full alert now, with scientists running around, and it was most likely saving research. Still, he was surprised all they threw at them were goons with guns... the fact they had a Lazarus Pit would imply it was important... so why did they not send in anything bigger? Or someone with a little more... fame.
"Sure, Cap," replied Oracle, "Let me see what I can do. Wait a moment. What's-" But Steve did not hear whatever she was about to say because static overtook the line, followed by a soft click. "I think not," It was not Oracle's voice; it was a man now, slightly annoyed but measured. "We've invested far too much to let you blow it up, Captain. We are on the cusp of greatness, a cure that will make all other cures obsolete. What we seek will elevate humanity beyond our wildest dreams: immortality, strength, and health. Surely even you can see the benefits of being able to cure Cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, and many, many more."

The voice surprised the Captain, as he didn't think it was possible for Oracle's technology to be taken over so easily. He listened to the words, words he had heard a thousand times from a thousand different egotistical maniacs. In his many decades of service, Steve had yet to hear anyone give him a convincing spiel, while also toying with dangerous or unknown artifacts. He frowned, two fingers to his ear as he listened intently, then shook his head quietly to himself.
"I've heard it all before... people playing with powers that they don't understand, for goals that hide their true reasons. If you really felt like that, then why are you working for A.I.M.? Sorry, but I'm not here for the spiel today."
He wondered how Shade was doing. How long did Steve have? This interception could be a distraction in itself. He had to keep moving. Steve raised his shield, moving sideways as the bullets ricocheted from it.
"Who are you? Why would you throw your lot in with this organisation, if you want to do so much good for humanity?"

"A predictable response, how disappointing." The man said dryly. "And here I heard you were clever. Surely you can figure out my identity from the simple fact that I was able to force my way into this private conversation you shared with Oracle? As for "throwing my lot in" with A.I.M." He could hint at a slight smile behind the words when the stranger spoke. "The funny thing with humanity is that the majority don't even know what's good for them, much like you, Captain."
Without warning, the excavator began to spark and, with a deep hum... turned on by itself. Much to the surprise of everyone, including the guards, the massive machine began to move, lurching forward, crushing several soldiers into the dirt as the bucket came smashing down towards Captain America; at the same time, the nearby truck also started up, letting out a deep roar from the engine.
The Shade had finally found a storage room with what appeared to be explosives. He materialised from the darkness, and thankfully, the ruckus had caused them to empty the area, so there was no one there to try and stop him... not that it would have been a problem if there had been anyone.
He raised his hands, spreading out his shadow, and the barrels with explosives began to sink into the darkness. It was a somewhat crude plan, lacking elegance, but... it would most likely get the job done. Not that The Shade had much experience with explosives, so it would be on Captain America to know how these worked.
"I do hope the captain is doing ok," Richard said to himself, "Oh well, it was just a bunch of regular humans with guns; he should be fine."
