Nocturne's interference nearly allowed Shizo's bolts to strike, but it seemed Ivan had come up with a plan to counter his bolts. Shizo's smile faded a bit as even in his manic state, he was forced to think hard on what to do with this. Now that he was using his quirk more aggressively he was going to have to be careful not to overheat, the fact his hero outfit had him shirtless helped, and his restrained usage of it so far and moving around so much had kept his heat levels low until now. But if he kept throwing around his full power while staying on this mound he was going to overheat quickly... likely far more quickly than Ivan would get tired sacrificing his armor and remaking it.
Luckily for him, Nocturne was stepping up to the plate of his own volition. Shizo watched intently as his teacher and senpai clashed, and his attention was caught by the vantablack shadow. It was like Nocturne had generated so many shadows fused together that they absorbed light. Concentrating his element to a new level... and it was strong enough to resist a type disadvantage AND Ivan's ludicrous strength.
With the demonstration over, Nocturne stepped aside and let Shizo resume the battle with fresh inspiration. The interruption did little to reduce his pumping adrenaline, but his face was a bit less manic now comparatively. Now the spark in his eyes was more focused as he looked to Ivan. So his regular bolts would just get blocked and dispersed by those armor pieces. He needed something more then, stronger and faster. Enough that even if Ivan used a lightningrod he could just barrel through it. Something that overcame the shortcomings of his element like vantablack did for Nocturne.
Shizo decided to try out a similar approach to what it looked like Nocturne had done. Clasping his hands together in front of him, he began generating electricity. "now... compress it. Tighter, squeeze it down... tighter... tighter" he thought to himself as the electricity began to gather in front of his knuckles. He used the amplification and control of his support gear to help, focusing all his efforts on compressing the lightning into a small ball in front of him. It was difficult, he'd never tried something like this before... but it was definitely doing something
Errant bolts of energy that leaked out of the lighting ball carved grooves in the soft ground around him. Sweat dripped from his body dampening the dirt beneath him. Shizo knew he couldn't hold it much longer, this would have to be good enough for a first attempt. With a grunt, he pointed the lightning ball at Ivan, and loosened his hold on the energy to let it burst forward.
THUUUUUUUM
A huge torrent of lightning closer to a beam than a bolt erupted from Shizo, faster and far stronger than anything he'd fired at Ivan previously. It was clear a direct hit from it would be devastating as the ground beneath it glowed red from the radiating heat and melted, and deafening thunder erupted moments after firing. The recoil of it pushed Shizo back as well, if he hadn't already been dug in from resisting the gale earlier he'd have been knocked over and the attack would've veered off course.
It seemed Shizo had developed the beginnings of a new supermove, though the charge time and strain it placed on him both needed work before he could apply it in the field. Here though, it represented his best shot at overpowering Ivan without resorting to his plan B. If this failed, he'd know he didn't have what it took to win this just yet... if only because he wasn't sure if he could put out another attack of this level again without passing out.

Ivan murmured angrily. Nocturne had given him a taste of whatever that plus ultra crap was. Well? What exactly was beyond his armor... He could only clad one or two limbs at a time, and beyond that, the boy was just a carbon copy of the image his father created, as much as he hated to admit it. He desperately wanted to win, and beyond that, he wanted his own identity. If there was a moment to try... He watched Shizo concentrate his quirk. It was a bit obvious he wasn't used to handling his own raw power. As powerful a quirk it was, there seemed to be some sort of chip on the boys shoulder when using it. Ivan angrily created an X with his arms in front of his chest defensively. "It's not about tightening anything wimp! Breathe through it like breathing through heavy weight training. Press it out, and shape it to your will and ideals. As the hero with the brightest ideal always wins. " He wondered why he was spouting advice... likely a pull from Nocturne's imposing prowess. In a way the hero inspired the both of them. Ivan wasn't going to be best by some first year. He damn sure wasn't going to let Shizo be the only one walking away with growth. His other arm would become clad, increasing the need for more load. Notably, he'df been going rather hard and at this point was spending more reserved power than he could accumulate over time. He knew that, but continued. His arms shimmered a brilliant amber this time before a light projected X would appear in front of his guard in the same color with shimmering silver flaking off of it. Ivan would inhale deep. "Tch... Plus ultra this, plus ultra that. I'll show you a bloody plus ultra. " It seemed like Shizo took a page from Nocturne's example and parlayed into a ball of some sort. Ivan began rushing forward in an impressive sprint as Shizo unleashed the blast. Rather than dodging, Ivan rushed headstrong into the unknown with confidence in his own abilities. Nocturne begrudgingly sat back to watch what would happen. Nervously his hand would rest on his bokken just in case. This was getting deeper and deeper into the unknown, but it was indeed plus ultra. A best case scenario for both parties. While this growth was fine and dandy, he still wanted them to be safe. A violent collision could be heard as the beam slammed into Ivan's cross, the beam beginning to fray as Ivan slid back from it's force. The errant lightning would crash and strike into nearby poles, as well as the ground, and building walls. A step. And then another, Ivan inched his way deeper closer despite the beam ramming into his newly created super move. His greatest asset... defense, combined with the overclocking shine used to power himself up and use these super moves. He'd combined the two to create a shield that would allow him to surge forward, a shield that he could used to press into his enemies and crush them with all his might. "AAAAAAAAH! AMBER CROWNED CROSS!" He roared as he pushed himself forwards. His steps were slowly becoming a light jog, and finally a full sprint again. Lighting rolled off his body, and it was clear Ivan was glazed over in concentration. Fully in the zone, the only thing he had his eyes on was Shizo. The x expanded a bit as the beam finally ceased and Ivan surged forward. leaving nothing but dust, destruction and chaos behind the 3rd year. Ivan hadn't felt himself get shocked. This was mainly due to his adrenaline rushing. It seemed like his speed was increasing. He'd jump impressively high despite his legs not being clad, and aim his entire body at Shizo while his body slowed from reaching the peak of his jump. There was a loud burst of energy leaking from his right arm as his armor cracked before descending downward toward Shizo. "Damn iiiiiit!" Ivan realized he couldn't contain this new move any longer. It was growing a life of it's own, due to his armor cracking at such an inopportune time. The X would expand once more, followed by another leak of energy from his left. "PENALTY, SAVE SHIZO!" At a last ditch effort, Ivan flexed his core and tilted himself to the only person he knew could handle it. With a cross chop motion, he tried to whipped the attack right for Nocturne, but it was too late. Nocturne would leap into action, taking his blazer off and in one hand before cloaking both it and his entire arm in vantablack shadows. "Kotai... Right arm of the Ryuujin." With a swipe of a large dragon like shadow hand, he'd meet the X before deflecting it upward. It would dissipate quickly the further it travelled. "What were you thinking? That could've seriously hurt someo -mmm...?" Nocturne glared at the third year, not realizing his nose began to bleed again. He also hadn't realized how quickly Ivan cleared the distance. With a breath to calm himself down, Ivan picked Nocturne up, and attempted to make a stride toward the mound. "Ivan... ten minutes has officially passed." The teacher sounded a bit glum, but was okay with this result. While Ivan did fall under the timer rule, he did in fact make an unexpected save. Despite declaring wanting to beat Shizo fair and square, Ivan chose to alter his attacks path when he knew something wasn't right. " I guess you can make a save when you need to. I'm not sure how to grade that... Rightfully so, due to the timer rule, Shizo will be granted 80 of his points. "Nocturne would return to his fight, as Ivan whipped around and pointed to Shizo. "HUH?!? I knew there was some sort of trick. What was it? because I surely could've washed him if there wasn't a timer! Oi oi oi!" He barked at the teacher. The teacher was bothered by two things. He was a bit concerned of how accurately Ivan could make a decision that quickly when things were going wrong, and on top of that, the kid still had plenty of fight left. It wasn't exactly normal, but he had to remember despite being a trasnfer student Ivan was a legacy kid with a hero parent, uncle and grandparent. The kids who went to this school sometimes had awful parents. He couldn't judge about awful parents... as his own going to ua was because it was his only way out of a yakuza life. Everyone had their bagagge. This caused him to analyze Shizo as well. There definitely was some sort of mental block, but to bring out his A game and try an unpracticed new move against a more seasoned opponent was daring and impressive. He was hoping Shizo wasn't also in the shitty parents club... The teacher was glad the boy had someone like Giga Bite looking after him. Nocturne looked at Ivan with a dry expression while gingerly holding his arm. It was the same arm he used earlier. "To save me... or rather, to be a hero and earn hero points..... You didn't save me, but using a penalty to save your junior is extremely admirable. Again, I'll have to review it later. I won't count that penalty against you... " "Well yeah, at least the load of power didn't implode on my arms like when I was back home. Couldn't use my arms for few days. " Ivan replied with a thumbs up and a smirk. Nocturne would meet that response with silence, forcing himself not to ask about what kind of training hell Valor and his hero family put Ivan through. "Time to rest a bit, before Shizo's defensive round... starts in a few. You runts are giving me a headache, go discuss what you learned or whatever" He would point the kids to Brine's water tanks and go cool his head as well as wipe his nose clean. ... "Yo kid. That move back there... -were you trying to emulate radiant gun?" Ivan asked with an arched brow.

The moment Shizo fired his new supermove, he came to regret it. His adrenaline had been pushing him through his phobia for his regular bolts... but this was something on a whole other level. It took a few seconds, but as he stared at the bright torrent of lightning bursting forth from him his fear crept back in, his heartbeat racing towards panic attack levels, and a chill running through him as every instinct in him screamed at him to run away... but he didn't have that option. If he aborted this attack early and lost control of it he really WOULD get hurt.
It didn't help his newfound panic as Ivan formed an X shaped cross of energy and began pushing through it, taking it head on. What the hell? His quirk was ridiculous being able to take this to the face and push through! Third years really were monsters! Having met both Tanzo and Ivan now, Shizo had acquired a rather healthy fear of third years power levels. They were something else... this wasn't helping his panic at all though.
And then his attack ended, a relief for a moment as he was glad to not be looking at his trigger any longer... but unfortunately he now had a much more immediate and tangible thing to be afraid of as the attack Ivan had parried his with was still going and hurtling towards him. Only for Ivan to lose control of it and make the situation even more dangerous. Shizo tried to move and run to safety, but his legs buckled, the strain of his unrefined supermove and his panic attack making his body give out on him as he collapsed to the ground.
Thankfully, Ivan managed to exert some degree of control over the situation, and called Nocturne in to intervene. Between the two of them the crisis was averted... and Ivan picked Nocturne up to continue as if nothing happened. Then the time was called, and a stunned and exhausted Shizo was informed of his victory. He also overheard a interesting tidbit from Ivan about a quirk backfire he'd experienced as well... but at the moment he was too shaken up to really process it. So instead he managed to struggle his way over to Brine to get healed and cooled off, as well as getting time to calm himself down.
He didn't get long to settle down before Ivan approached him with a question though. "Not entirely" he replied "my main inspiration there was Nocturne's super dark shadow thing he blocked you with. Made me wonder what would happen if I condensed a bunch of my element too, though the form I chose to test that with was emulating your radiant gun yeah. Figured it was the safest, least if I lost control it'd be easier to point away from me and avoid a backlash again."
Shizo absentmindedly rubbed his forearm, the scarring on it burned in his memory, even though he wasn't in pain now the recent panic attack had given him some nasty phantom pain. "I'm definitely happy with the end result... but I don't think I'll be trying that again today" he said "I don't think I can handle another one of those right now"

Both students would be pleased to note tanks of foaming aqua blue water would arrive in front of them. Brine would leer at all people in attendance. This took away from his precious time doing paperwork. In a hero academy, paperwork was the closest thing to getting paid for doing nothing he could get. Ivan would jump right in without hesitation. Shizo's shocks were taking a toll over that extended period of time, not that's ever give off the slightest glint to his opponent. "And?" He seemed more annoyed than before. He looked at Shizo as if the first year would understand. Rather, the fact Shizo was a first year kept flying over Ivan's head. They hadn't exactly gone over supermoves too much in Gigabites class, whereas for a third year, such a thing was a bit of a no-brainer. They were more concerned about in field and situational practices than academics.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU NAME IT?" He barked. For Ivan this was a precious moment. Amber Crowned Cross was the first super move he'd created without mimicking a family member's super move. "If you're going to fight in any instance, you need to put your name as a hero on the line. You're imprinting all in attendance of who you are when you show off a move that's unique to you and only you." For Ivan this new super move was proof he wasn't a carbon copy of his heritage, but what exactly did it mean for Shizo. While his intensity was dwarfed off the battlefield there still was an almost childlike passion about heroics that the 3rd year presented.
"Matter of fact, who even is Shizo? What kind of hero do you want to be?" Good question, especially since he was trying to beat the boy's face in not even a few minutes ago. Bygone be bygones? For Ivan what happened on the field stayed on the field, he didn't take any of it personal. He was raised to be this way...

Shizo hopped into his own water tank, the healing waters doing a lot to cool his body down and restore his stamina. His quirk's main drawback was that the electricity he generated was hot and heated the air around him, causing him to overheat if he didn't move around to cooler areas. He'd been pretty mobile that fight, but he also wasn't used to firing his quirk off so much anymore... and that last attack had definitely pushed his luck.
He was taken aback by what Ivan shouted at him though, the 3rd years issue wasn't with him using an experimental and very risky move in the middle of a fight but instead... that he hadn't thought up a name for it? There was a moment of stunned silence before Shizo could form a response "I... didn't think to name it. It took all my focus just to do it at all and I had no clue if it would even work. I guess I figured I'd pick out a name for it once I actually made a useable supermove. I do have one other move I've already named, it's not really useful for 1v1 fights though. I'll think up a name for this one once I can do it reliably... would be a shame if I shouted out a cool attack name and then exploded."
Ivan's next question made more sense though, though it again took Shizo time to respond as he thought it over.
"I'm still figuring that out I think. That's not a question I was allowed to think about before I got here. I was raised to be a tool for my parents to live out their fantasy of being rich heroes. All I was ever allowed to aspire towards was being the type of hero who made lots of money and made my parents look good because their quirks created mine. That's all I was born for." Shizo said, bitterness creeping into his voice "I know I don't want to be that, I'll be damned if I let them make me their little puppet forever. But I haven't quite figured out what I..."
Shizo trailed off as a memory flashed in his mind, his fight with the villain, Atsuro curled up immobilized by fear, the villain's minions surrounding them both. All he'd wanted in that moment was to be strong enough that he could drive that fear away. That was something, he might not know exactly what his hero career was going to look like, but he had an answer for Ivan for now.
"actually, no. I do know, at least partially. I want to live up to my hero name, Rajin, god of thunder. I want to become so powerful that I can make everyone's fear go away when I show up. When they hear the crack of thunder from my quirk they can relax. Because they know I'll never lose, that the bad guys are going down and they're going to be safe." Shizo said as he got out of the healing tank "overwhelming strength and presence. I don't necessarily care if I'm officially the rank 1 hero, but I want to be known enough to have that effect on people... that's what I've got so far."

Ivan intently listened to Shizo's every word. He leaned back in his foamy tub and looked up at the sky. Another kids who's parents treated him poorly. It sounded a lot like Yoichi, another one of his juniors. Why was it like this? Great heroes and greedy people weren't so different. If people took more time to care, maybe there wouldn't be so many villains walking around. Ivan couldn't help but think this as Shizo spoke.
"I'll accept that answer." He folded his arms. "It's a little different for me. I'm basically starting from ground zero all over again. I already was who my family wanted me to be. They think loosening me leash and sending me to japan will make me miss them and come crawling back. TAH, I'm going to finally be who I'm meant to be. Not some puppet of my damn father and grandfather."
He shrugged and pulled himself deeper into the tank for a better soak. While it had healing properties, it had a nice cool soothing sensation to it. He didn't want to leave. "I am to be the pinnacle, the very top. Sure I make mistakes but it's about heart, and dedication. It's why I chose the hero name Crest. "

So the bad parents club had even more members then, Shizo wondered just how many members there were just in the people he was going to personally meet. The number was growing a tad concerning... maybe the Bear Den agency needed a new branch for kids who weren't orphans but whose parents were so bad they'd rather be orphans than stay. "Or we could find a way to not pin apparently the entirety of Japan's parenting duties on one pro hero... there's gotta be decent parents out there right?" he thought to himself bemusedly
"Sorry to hear your parents also see you as a puppet, I know from experience how bad that sucks" Shizo said "let me guess, they trained you from the moment your quirk manifested too huh? Though judging by that fight it went a lot better for you than me, your power is something else man. And here people have been telling me I'VE got a lot of firepower, you're way more impressive... at least right now, I don't intend to lose to you forever. Wouldn't make for a very impressive thunder god if I did."
There was some irony in him saying that considering he did technically win the exercise just before. But they both knew that he won based on the limitations of the rules, not because Shizo was the stronger of the two. Even considering the rules if Nocturne hadn't been there Shizo would've been in serious trouble with that out of control attack. No there was no denying Ivan was stronger... but that just gave him a wall to try and climb over.

He paused, accepting the sentiment about his parents, but chose not to dive deeper. It only brought bad memories. Maybe at a different time, they could talk more about it. "A bit more than just training..., but "Ivan arched a brow. "If it makes you feel any better, you're classmate lost to me as well. She was shooting hair at me until her scalp bled..." in reference to Yoichi. "As long as you come at me with your best, I'll meet you with just as much grit. I don't see the point in making it easy for you to catch up to me." He clutched his fist and squeezed it tight.
"Everything matters in hero school, everything. Especially with finding good teachers. You lot are spoiled with top 10 heroes as your instructors... You better not waste this opportunity. Find someone willing to invest in you... someone or group that really speaks to your needs and wants as a up and coming hero. " He'd bring his fist to chest and softly pound at his heart. "I found someone who was willing to not only bet on me, but to bet on the future entirely. Strive's Partner Speed. He believes so much in the younger generation, I can help but feel like I have to measure up to his expectations. He's had a front row seat to your country's pillar. I believe if I invest in the agency like he invests into me, I'll get to my goals. To be the strongest savior, the shining example. I'm not gonna rely on these has beens forever. Just wait til it's my turn. Just you wait, Raijin, I'll show the world what a real hero can be."
The boy stared long and hard at Nocturne. 10 was the bottoms of the top 10 totem pole... It was clear Ivan wanted to challenge the man in earnest when the time came. Despite using the phrase has been, it was more than obvious Ivan held a deep respect of all the top 10 heroes. They were who he strove to be.

Shizo grimaced at the thought of Yoichi fighting Ivan. The only reason Shizo even stood a chance was because of how bad a matchup he was for someone who constantly coated themselves in metal armor... but the opposite was true of an archer like her. And he could absolutely see her stubbornly trying until she hurt herself regardless. He'd... get her some ointment or something for her scalp later...
Listening to Ivan's view on teachers and his own mentor Speed, Shizo had to admit he was impressed. For a foreigner to show up, and without any public showings land a spot at such a prominent agency, Ivan clearly had talent... or maybe it was just cause of who his parents were. But if Nocturne was any indicator of how the top 10 operated he didn't think nepotism was as much of a factor.
"I guess that makes our goals kinda similar then. We both want to be that shining beacon. I don't think relying on others is a bad thing though. There is strength to be found in cooperation. I myself have a lot of potential to become a lot stronger if I work with compatible quirks" Shizo mused "I can absorb electricity too, and that supercharges my quirk for a bit, if it means victory in the end I've got no problem with relying on someone who could provide that for me for example. And even our pillar Strive worked closely with Speed"
Shizo glanced over "I don't think you should think of relying on others support as a bad thing. Everyone has their strengths, if you want to be the strongest, you shouldn't stand alone." he said, thinking about the next match between them. He had a decent read on Ivan from this conversation, and a plan was formulating to sneak out another victory while also probably teaching his senpai a bit of a lesson about his headstrong approach to things.
"That being said though, that's well in the future for us both. For now I'm still eager to test my strength in this exercise." he said, burying the lead a bit. He was fully healed up now, but if he wanted to stand a chance at being the defender he was going to need to trick Ivan a bit here, and that would be easiest to do before the match started.

"It's not about relying on others, it's about seeing the top 10 as competition instead of putting on some stupid pedestal. " He felt as though Shizo was missing the point a bit. He held no issue with relying on teammates, but he was meaning he'd surpass the current top 10 as a part of next generation of heroes and was willing to prove it. He stands from his foaming water tank and point. It was nowhere near where the mound was, in fact it was a ways behind him. Around the mound the robos were trying their best to patch the ground up from their prior round.
Nocturne stood on the mound already. It seemed like he was caught in a thought, or maybe something or someone was pulling on his attention. It wasn't very like him. He generally focused well on the task at hand, and if he were distracted, nobody would ever really noticed. Behind his usual scowl was a shade of worry. He'd text a few contacts in his phone before shoving the device back in his pocket. Dr. Brine would tap his foot. "That's all folks, come back when you're done your next round." He declared.
Ivan would nod, and make a few steps to toward the direction he pointed, only to turn back to Shizo to make sure they were going in the same direction. Behind Shizo, he'd finally notice Nocturne. "...oh." With stomping feet he pretended as if the mistake never happened.

Shizo felt a little silly having missed Ivan's point, after the interactions he'd been having with his classmates so far he'd kinda assumed that Ivan was another loner type. "Oh if that's what you mean then sure, obviously. The entire system is built on competition" he said meekly, but before the chat could continue, Brine sent them off to their next round.
Not knowing Nocturne all that well, Shizo didn't notice much about the man's distraction apart from noticing he sent some texts, but that didn't seem out of the ordinary. The man was both a top ranked hero and a teacher after all there were bound to be messages he needed to respond to throughout any given day.
Once Shizo took his position he looked to Ivan, if he played this fight fair and they both went at this logically... he had no chance of winning. Ivan had proven that he could overpower even Shizo's strongest attack... and Shizo wasn't really sure if he could use that again today even after the healing and cooling off. But the gap in firepower wasn't the real issue, it was the speed gap. If Ivan clad his legs there was next to nothing Shizo could do to stop him from outmaneuvering him and grabbing the crown. And once Ivan had it there was absolutely no way to keep up with Ivan if the older boy just... ran off.
The best Shizo could do in a contest where he played fair was form a lightning cage around Nocturne for a while to delay Ivan getting to him, but that would burn his stamina long before the timer ran out and Ivan could probably just power through it anyway... so he needed to trick the older boy into not doing the most obvious strategy.
"Now that we're back on the field, we should pick up where we left off. We were both getting stronger before that attack went out of control. I'm sure you could just use your super speed to trivilize this next round" Shizo said "but neither of us will learn anything from that other than that you have super speed and I don't. We've got a whole mock city here though, and that means there's power cables I could power myself up with. If we move the fight to one of the streets I could fight you at full power, give a real challenge. What do you say?"
It was a gamble, banking on Ivan's competitive nature and desire to grow stronger in order to move the fight away from Nocturne and keep Ivan from just taking the easy win condition. Turning this from an impossible task of keeping Ivan away from Nocturne into a much more feasible task... albeit insanely difficult... and that was to simply survive Ivan's assault until the timer ran out while keeping him engaged enough to not just go for the easy win.
He wasn't lying either, he was still feeling that adrenaline and drive to overcome his phobia for now, and he did get significantly stronger with a electrical source to draw on. He just needed to hope that fact would entice Ivan into taking the bait. Of course if this failed then he did just basically hand Ivan the winning strategy on a platter... but there wasn't anything he could've done about it anyway.

Nocturne huffed. His eyes bounced between the two boys as they got into position. Ivan cocked his head. "Just absorb the power now. There's no difference between this street and that street. You won't win anyway. " The teen would dig into his sash with both hands whilst keep a eye on Shizo. "Better do it fast. " He begin running forwards, his cape kicking up. He'd aim to run passed Shizo and make a b-line to the teacher. The was a soft rattle on the ground as smoke bombs fell from his hands as he ran. He hadn't clad any limbs yet. It seemed Ivan had his own plan. There would be a few moments before the smoke screen went off. Perhaps the delay was part of the plan, too.

Shizo internally groaned, so much for baiting the senior into a pure brawl. He needed a new plan, thankfully he was getting a few moments to think of one as Ivan wasn't cladding his legs yet, instead charging normally and dropping small orbs... As the first one went off after a delay Shizo cursed. If Ivan was able to sneak off through the smoke with Nocturne on top of having super speed then... wait... sneak off through the smoke?
Shizo, spoke into his headset "Penalty, hide in my shadow until forced out" he said, a plan coming together now as he made a beeline for the rapidly expanding smoke clouds. Nocturne leaving the mound wasn't ideal, he'd need to return to the mound within 5 minutes. But the match was 10 last time. If Shizo could give Ivan the runaround for 4, then stepped back on the mound with Nocturne to reset the timer... and repeat that at any point past the 5 minute mark. He could win by default, Ivan wouldn't be able to capture Nocturne for five minutes if less than five minutes remained. Sure it'd cost him some points... and have Ivan gunning for him directly the whole time, but he liked his odds of being able to run away for a few minutes way better than he liked his odds at holding a constant cage of lightning around Nocturne for over 5 minutes
So plan "abuse the system" was the choice here... and that started by using Ivan's own smokescreen to cover his escape into a side alley with Nocturne in his shadow
