Bubbles: "I have a hypothesis that most, if not all, telepathically and telekinetically gifted individuals emit a sort of mental field, invisible to the human eye but pervasive, and enabling what these individuals are able to do. Whatever you name them, whether psychic, psion, esper, etc., they all emit a field, either passively or when using their abilities. My own psionic field, however, is inverted. I emit a field, but I've found through numerous measurements that my field behaves as though inside-out. What does this mean? This means that instead of having the usual telekinetic abilities, I manifest bubbles, like and similar-looking to giant soap bubbles. They manifest as though out of thin air, though in reality, it is a psionic field forced to have physical boundaries due to being inverted. These bubbles can float, shield, trap, burst, and bounce. They can grow large enough to hold an Abrams tank inside, and durable enough to withstand said tank's shell from inside or out. They burst with psychic force, producing effects similar to explosives, and can manifest one after another rapidly to create a cascading explosion. Anyone inside a bubble is shielded from effects and can also be made to float. Curiously, the bubbles also act as shielding from other telekinetic and telepathic effects. For example, anyone inside a bubble would be shielded from having their mind read, and having other psychic effects act on them."
Medical Expertise: Terry has a proven track record as a combat medic during his time with the Protectorate, and has received further medical training and experience in an Institute hospital's emergency room. He has seen some of the worst trauma a human body can experience, and has healed much of that trauma. Terry's general medical knowledge can keep someone or a team going for a long time. While he prefers and excels in tense emergency situations, Terry also has the patience and deep medical knowledge of an internal medicine physician, able to provide support and insight even during recovery.
Weapons/Items:
Institute Lab Coat: The Institute-manufactured prototype lab coat was designed with the harshest combat conditions in mind. Its nanofiber weave is made of a material that is a closely-guarded Institute secret. The coat is bulletproof, fireproof, blastproof, waterproof, and provides partial radiation shielding which grants defense from energy weapons. It is both lightweight and pliable.
Weaknesses:
Human Limitations: Terry is as physically susceptible to injury and illness as any other typical human. He's not a trained athlete, and relies on his bubbles for self-defense.
Drugs: Anything that alters Terry's brain chemistry can affect his abilities, such as inhibiting them or making them impractically volatile. For example, too much alcohol not only cause drunkenness, but also severely inhibits his ability to manifest bubbles.
Appearance
Image:
Physical Appearance: Terry is a lanky white male standing at 5'9", with curly brown hair and brown eyes. He has a wry smile and youthful complexion, though his superiors may say "spotty" in teasing jest.
Clothing and Armor: Terry typically wears business casual and black-frame glasses, with a regular jacket instead of a suit jacket. He almost always carries his lab coat with him, simply finding it too convenient to leave anywhere far from him.
Personality
Sexual Orientation:
Heterosexual
General Personality:
Terry is a very relaxed individual, to the point that some would accuse him of laziness. The truth is that Terry is simply used to relying on his intellect to coast through most of his problems, preferring not to apply more than the minimum amount of work to achieve something. That does not mean that Terry does not work hard, but that he honestly would prefer not to, referring economic efficient means and long days of rest. As a physician, Terry displays excellent bedside manner, is polite and warm, and jokes easily with patients. Terry has a dry sense of humor, and deadpan delivery. As for his wife, Terry loves Jacqueline very much, and continues to be devastated by her disappearance.

History:
For as long as Terry could remember, he has been fascinated by his powers, being able to manifest these bubbles before he could crawl. He's the first born child in a middle class Catholic family, who was approached by the Protectorate after Terry's constant playing with his powers in public made it unable to keep them a secret. Terry's family was offered free K-12 schooling at a federally-funded, Protectorate-founded and operated academy. Given the choice between Terry having a childhood surrounded by metahumans like him, or a childhood of deep uncertainty in public schools, Terry's parents quickly accepted the offer.
Even among other metahumans, Terry quickly stood out from among his peers as a gifted student and bright individual, consistently scoring top grades throughout his 12 years at Harry S. Truman Protectorate Academy. He was also a bit of a troublemaker, using his powers to entertain other students or pull pranks. It was during these years that Terry learned through his own research and inquiries with professors that he was what was best classified as a psychic or psion, with his abilities originating from his brain. The discovery that his metahuman abilities were tied to his brain set the would trajectory for his life.
After his high school years, likely due to the conditioning at the Academy, Terry enlisted as part of the Protectorate, serving as a combat medic as part of the New York division under Benjamin Drake, a hero better known as The Authority. As a combat medic to New York State's (lawful) frontline heroes, Terry has treated some of the worst and strangest trauma that a human can experience, much of that trauma he's treated in the field. Four years of service and experience have tempered Terry into a cool-headed emergency responder, with his fiercest day of battle so far being the Battle of New York during the Kree invasion.
However, those four years with the Protectorate didn't bring him closer to understanding the nature of his metagene or his powers, so after being honorably discharged, Terry joined a private research institute focused on metahumans, specifically psychics, named simply The Institute. Terry spent four years training and studying as a physician in an Institute-affiliated hospital, primarily in the hospital's emergency room and intensive care unit. It was during these four years as a physician that Terry repeatedly met a scrappy metahuman vigilante named Jacqueline Ducard in the emergency room. They got to know each other after her fourth emergency room visit, and they quickly clicked well, falling in love in the following months.
After receiving his medical training from the Institute, Terry transferred from the Institute's healthcare division to their research division, still obsessed with learning even more about his powers. It was shortly after Terry's transfer that a brush with death motivated Jacqueline to propose to Terry herself, to which a shocked and surprised Terry happily accepted, taking her name out of sheer love for the woman.
For three years now, Terry's career has been spent studying the brain and experimenting on the nervous system and on other psychics. Terry was very happy for a while, enjoying his dream career and deeply in love, but one day, suddenly, Jacqueline quietly disappeared, without leaving so much as a hint of where she could have gone. Deep in depression, Terry took a long vacation from work. After his vacation, with much less joy for his work than he used to have, Terry found that his performance review had earned him an invitation to the Institute Ethics Committee, a panel that oversees and decides ethical disputes over experiments, research, and behavior conducted by Institute members. With a melancholy and detached heart, Terry accepted.
Role Play Sample:
Not long after waking up, Terry started his Christmas by melting a pat of butter over medium heat, and cracking eggs. The kitchen was still dim, illuminated only by the stove and the morning light. A soft but long yawn left him as he flipped eggs, his other hand running back through his disheveled black hair before adjusting his glasses. In another pan, he cooked bacon and sausages, singing gently to himself as he slid two bagel halves into a toaster.
“Adeste fideles læti triumphantes,
Venite, venite in Bethlehem.
Natum videte
Regem angelorum:
Venite adoremus
Venite adoremus
Venite adoremus
Dominum~”
As Terry finished making breakfast, he made two spiked hot cocoas (one for himself), before bringing a breakfast tray back to the bedroom, setting it on a nightstand before gently shaking his partner awake. “Good morning, starlight.”
An athletic, raven-haired woman turned over to face him, stretching her arms widely before yawning aloud and draping her arms around Terry’s shoulders. “Salve, angel.” She pulled herself up and kissed Terry, grinning when she pulled away. “Thanks for breakfast in bed. You didn’t have to do that.”
“I know, but if there’s any day to do a little extra…” he replied, nuzzling his nose against hers for a moment. “Two eggs over easy, sausage and bacon, and a lightly toasted bagel with extra cream cheese, plus hot cocoa with peppermint schnapps, just the way Jacqueline likes it.”
“Ooh, gimme!” said Jacqueline, taking her mug. “To us,” she toasted, to which Terry agreed. “To us.” Their mugs clinked, and the two took deep swigs. “Mmm…I’m going to need another one soon.”
“There’s more schnapps in the kitchen,” replied Terry before setting his mug aside and reclining back into bed, draping one arm over Jacqueline’s waist, the other arm propping his head up. “I’m a little surprised I managed to wake up before you today.”
“Me too, but I was having a nice dream before a Catholic nun’s singing woke me up,” Jacqueline said with a smirk.
Terry laughed. “I grew up in a Catholic family, you know that. What were you dreaming about?”
“I got a huge reward for bringing in a villain and was having a party at my new lake house.” Jacqueline turned towards Terry, holding half a strip of bacon between her teeth. “Did you get me a new lake house?”
“No, all your gifts fit under the tree this year,” replied Terry before he bit the bacon from Jacqueline's lips, tasting salt and chocolate. He then reached over to his nightstand and grabbed his laptop, opening a file labeled “Bastion”.
“Oh, no, you don’t,” said Jacqueline, closing his laptop the moment she saw the file. “Today is a day for relaxing. No work, no bosses, just two heroes enjoying a day they deserve.”
Terry smiled at that response. “Pretty bold of you to call us heroes.”
“Well, what would you call us? Main characters?”
“I dunno. Metahumans? Civilians?”
“You’re so clinical sometimes.”
Terry ate a bagel half as they took their time eating breakfast, the daylight slowly brightening and crawling across the sheets. He left only once to refill their hot cocoas, with mimosas as another option. “So are you gonna joining me in the shower or what?” asked Alina playfully after finishing her meal.
After sharing a shower together, they started exchanging presents, finding little personalized surprises in their stockings. As Alina picked up a small rectangular present from under the tree, Terry watched with anticipation, almost wanting to explain his reasoning before she even opened it. Inside the box was a rose gold bracelet with rubies, prompting a happy squeal from the raven-haired woman. She threw her arms around Terry. “I love it. Thank you. Now for yours, gimme a sec.” Alina ran off to another room, gently carrying a medium sized box when she returned. It sounded as though there was shuffling inside, and a small “mew” sounded from the box. Terry gave Alina a slightly incredulous look before gently opening the box, a warm smile spreading across his features as he saw a little grey and white kitten inside.
“I know it hasn’t been long since Baxter died,” said Jacqueline, “but I miss having a cat too. Plus, it’s good practice.”
Terry turned to her and kissed her deeply, before immediately petting the little mewling kitten. He didn’t even mind that the kitten used its claws as it played. “Thank you. I already love him. What’ll we name him?”
“Hmm…I don’t know yet.” replied Jacqueline, scratching the kitten between the ears.
“That’s a weird name.”
Jacqueline couldn’t help smiling at the joke. “Shut up.”
After exchanging the rest of the presents (designer clothing for both and an antique pocket watch for Terry), they curled up on the couch, drinking hot cocoa and watching a movie. “Are you planning on making anything special after ice skating?” asked Jacqueline quietly as the movie started building suspense. “A turkey,” murmured Terry, adjusting his hold around Jacqueline. “I felt like it since we didn’t do anything for Thanksgiving.”
“True. We didn’t even see family this year.”
“Yeah, work's been keeping us busy.”
They quickly got dressed for the outdoors after the movie ended, already wearing some of their new clothing. The skating rink they chose was fairly active when they arrived, families and couples mostly gliding slowly across the ice. Jacqueline’s legs wobbled slightly as her skates touched the ice. “Do you know how to skate?” asked Terry gently. Jacqueline shook her head. Terry smiled gently and skated out towards the middle of the rink, before turning smoothly, extending a hand out to his wife. “That’s okay. I’ll teach you.”
