"Fuck."
The word is low, nearly hissed as a young boy kicks out his feet from the ledge of a building. His suit absorbs the chill of the damp concrete as he glares holes into the sign across the street, black and yellow cape tucked close to his sides. Technically, the GCPD hadn't done anything to him, but that does nothing to calm the anger he feels in the depths of his soul. As Grayson had so insistently and unhelpfully repeated, Robin's actions had put the lives of multiple officers and a few civilians in danger.
Honestly? What was the point of the GCPD if they couldn't be aware enough to detect an ambush? More so when they were already set up to protect a group of defenseless people?
His boots slam harder into the side of the rooftop as his anger increases. Robin reaches for the scuffed MP3 player tucked into his tunic and hits play on the newest addition to his playlists. Did he make a playlist specifically for when Grayson delivers his 'I'm not mad, just disappointed' speeches? Of course. Does it help? Sometimes.
Robin tucks one of his earbuds into his ear, keeping the other free to listen to his com and surroundings. Just because he is contemplating how much he actually cares about what Grayson thinks does not mean he is going to stop patrolling. Being home in the empty manor is always worse than this.
"Stupid fucking Nightwing. Stupid incompetent GCPD."

Suddenly, inexplicably, the boy is no longer alone. Another mysterious figure is on the rooftop, standing behind, and then next to him. For Robin, the figure was not that mysterious. She was clad in her full suit, covering her from head to toe in black spandex and the unmistakably yellow belt. She helped herself to a similar position as Robin, dangling her feet over the rooftop. She took in the scene... particularly the building that was most plainly in sight. She drummed her fingers soundlessly against the ledge, moving to an invisible rhythm. She did not look at him directly yet.
She did not need to look at her brother's face to know when he was upset.

Robin would never admit that he didn't notice Batgirl's presence until she was sitting down next to him. It takes everything he has not to jump, instead shifting a bit away from her and then sitting back down in his slouch. Of course, with all the interactions he's had with her, he may as well have jumped so hard that he threw himself to the pavement below.
He watches her from the corner of his eye as she drums her fingers on the ledge, waiting for her to say something- anything. After a moment of mutual silence outside the too-loud music from his earbud, Robin sighs.
"Yes, Batgirl?"

Batgirl paused for some time, past the typical gap between being spoken to and responding to that engagement. Beneath her mask, she watched him, studying. Knowing. Smiling. On the exterior, she was simply staring, waiting. Her fingers stopped dancing on the ledge and moved into her lap, at rest. She raised one of her hands, pointing to one of her ears under the cowl with a thumb and infex finger, then pinced with those fingers and moved them away. She moved her other hand in a beckoning gesture between the two of them.
The boy could sit with his music, or he could speak with her. It was not possible to do both.

It isn't a challenge. By all means, it is a simple request and one that Robin may have relented to on any other night. Something he would have easily complied with if it was perhaps Grayson here and talking to him.
His brows fall under his mask even as a corner of his mouth drops into a frown. "I can hear you just fine." And he sounds like he means it despite the petulant notes under his words. Robin watches Batgirl for a moment longer, testing her, seeing how willing she is to push to help him.

So. That was his decision. So be it. Batgirl waited, also testing the boy to see how he would proceed, if he did so at all. When that too became clear, she waited a beat longer. Then, there is a blur. Her forefinger and middle finger, crooked like a mantis, dig into the boy's side. A stunning strike to dull the nerves, if temporarily. This was not her true intent. That was in a grasping motion, which was faster still, upon the earbud that was on the boy's ear facing her. It would become hers. Painfully. This included the player as well. Her hands moved like lightning. In the span of two blinks, Batgirl was looking at a Robin with no earbuds nor music player. She stared at him, now with slightly more intensity. Her smile beneath the cowl was more defined.
"You can hear me now."
Her hand holding onto Damian's escape retreated within her cloak. When it re-emerged, it was empty. "What happened?"

He sees when she moves, unable to fully track her. While his mind is screaming demands, Robin simply is not on Batgirl's level. She has too many years on him and her training had not been interrupted so completely like his had. His arm shifts down to defend his side, elbow smacking into her forearm instead of blocking the blow. It is too little, too late.
His breath catches in his chest as he struggles to piece together her intention. He feels her hands tug his player free from his hand and the bud from his ear. Lyrics fill the space between them.
"-like my name Lazarus. Know Satan gon' be mad at-"
Robin-no-longer, Damian hisses at Cassandra even as he shifts his body to face hers. He isn't arrogant enough to know that he can take it back from her. Not in a direct assault.
"You know what happened. I bet that coward sent you here to "check in" on me." Damian's words are coming quickly, his already burning anger bursting with renewed strength. "Well, I'm doing just fine! It wasn't my fault. I left the civilians with the GCPD and went to help out that lout Red Robin. They should have been able to protect them. They were armed and supposedly trained!"
He knows he is playing directly into Cass's hands, but he can't seem to stop now that he's started. His face is pinched in fury and his jaw is clenched to keep from trembling.
"They failed. They failed and Nightwing refused to hear me out. He listened to Red Robin and I was lectured for it. It wasn't my fault. He...he told me to just go home as if there's anything for me there."
The wind from his sails disappears and Damian bites his tongue, looking away from Cass in shame.

Batgirl knew these lyrics. She suspected that Robin did not think that she knew them. She will need to pass this along to a certain blonde crime-fighter. She smiled at that thought. Robin's words, as far as it appeared, were well taken by Batgirl. She was not one to mince words, and certainly not the weight behind them. Though the two of them had not known each other much in his time with the Family, he understood that much about her.
"Just got here. Haven't talked to anyone else." Batgirl took a more relaxed stance, shrugging her arms and resting one on her knee. She looked out, again at the main building looming over this area. "They..." She sighs, subtly though not so subtle that it goes without notice. There is a familiar frustration there. The cowl only hides so much.
"Not, like us."

Her words seem to ease something in Damian because he turns back towards the GCPD building. His boots tap-tap against the roof as he pulls his knees to his chest before wrapping his arms around them. Damian rests his chin on his arms.
"They should be." It is the closest he can get to saying he wishes the Belfry Brood was like him- that they understood better. "I tailor my thought process to how they say the world works and history keeps repeating itself."
Green eyes glare out at a flickering street light from behind white lenses. Whatever crime it committed in its past life must have been profound.
"...why did you leave Gotham?"

For a moment, Batgirl thought to add something to tonight's topic. Though, she waited long enough for Robin to change the topic. She turned her head to look at him. She wasn't... surprised, but for some reason she had not expected the question, either. It was not the first time he had asked about her... other life. Dodging the question had been easy before. Now, it was something for her to reflect on. Damian needed people.
"I'm... on another team. No Family." Batgirl frowned beneath the mask. Why did she say it like that? And why did it hurt? She straightened her posture and crossed her arms over her chest. "Had a mission. Back now."

As the pause drags on, Damian finds himself regretting asking. He doubts she will answer this time. She never had before and it is foolish of him to expect something different from her.
It is only when he is ready to give up and ask for his player back that Cassie turns to look at him. The muscles in his back tighten as he works to stay perfectly still and his breath halts in his chest. He watches her from the corner of his eye.
"Another team?" Somehow, that both soothes and ruffles his feathers. The only other person who has experiences that match his had left due to other obligations. A sigh leaves him as he shifts and finds the air easier to breathe.
"I am going to join." Damian declares under his breath, as if uncertain of what he is saying but unwilling to back down all the same. "Gotham has so many people. They can survive without me. I am joining."

This was exactly what she had been afraid of. Aside from Him, the only one that knew was Oracle. It was not that Robin could not be trusted. Out of everyone in the Family, he was perhaps the one she trusted the most. Was this truly the best for him? Being in Gotham, or joining the Champions. Her circumstances for the latter had been specific, under His...
Batgirl realized that she hadn't answered Robin. She tried not to speak on most things. She was only an authority in the language of combat, and perhaps the latest TikTok dancing trends. She did not know how to be a mentor. Or think quickly in a conversation. Eventually, she finds some words.
"... when was the last time you were outside?"
They did not feel satisfactory. For a member of the Family to be outside of Gotham was an experience she was still struggling to understand. To Batgirl's understanding, Robin's life experiences apart from these streets had been in dojos and caves. This team... was not that.

It takes work for him to remain still as Cassie considers his words. Damian knows that she can take a while before she manages to put together what she wants to say. That does not make waiting for them any easier. Had he made a mistake asking to join her team? He knows full well that, of everyone, she could stop him. Or, at least, make it very hard for him.
Perhaps it would be a test? That idea catches Damian and its poisonous tips burrow into his skin. He's always been very good at tests and tasks with clear objectives. Damian is halfway through an infiltration plan when Cassie does find her words, pulling his attention away from trying to figure out if the Champion's base uses standard air systems.
"Since before I was left here." He shrugs his shoulders, finally looking up from the flickering street light, much to its relief. Damian's lying, of course. He did get outside the city once and rather recently. He just didn't get far before Gordon was blowing up his phone. That was the last time he picked up a call from her specifically. No one could put someone back in their place like she could and hearing Grayson in the background didn't help.
"Is that important? I am accustomed to new places and rules. I can learn this new team and its rules as well. You know how skilled I am."

Batgirl stares at Damian. It is more than her typical stare, watchful and curious. Here, it is the closest she can get to projecting disbelief while wearing the cowl. Her heart skips a beat as she resists the urge to laugh. She leans forward instead, just short of invading the boy's personal space.
"You?... Rules?"

Damian's face immediately scrunches up, nose wrinkling as he hears Cass's words. His mouth twists as he replies, "I can follow rules!" It is the truth. "I just don't follow stupid and pointless rules." That is also very true. "Are you saying I'm not capable of being on a team?"
