Batgirl puts a hand to the cowl's lips. Sometimes she could not help herself. Perhaps that was Spoiler rubbing off on her. She did not mean to upset the boy... although it was rather easy to upset him. He did not need to hear that.
She shook her head. The boy was quick to act; he was not as quick to think. She placed a hand on the bat symbol on her chest. "...Team."
What was this Family, if not the team that defended Gotham? It was their responsibility now.

"Right," Damian huffs, feeling so distinctly not like Robin and not like a Wayne. But, he also feels nothing like an al Ghul either. His gaze turns back to the street lamp that must have offended him in some way, mood further soured. He does not have the words to express any of this to Cassie, and he wishes he didn't have to. She had said that the Bats were not like them, but maybe Damian isn't like her either.
His thoughts turn to a conversation he had with Stephanie and his frown deepens. She had said that stubbornness was part of what made them Bats. Maybe she is wrong. Stubbornness isn't enough. Tenacity can't erase how different he is from everyone.
"My player, Batgirl." He holds out a hand to Batgirl, unwilling to look at her again. The Champions are a bad idea anyway. They would just be another family that he wouldn't fit in with. He should have just stayed on his own.
Can't let anyone down when you're alone.

It is one word. For Batgirl, and for this boy, it is enough... in different ways. Her relaxed body tensed. For a moment, she did not move from her now compromised position. Then, slowly, her arm retreated within her cape. It emerged with the boy's player, reaching out for him to take. There was no guile behind it - once he reached to take it, she would not shy away or catch him unawares a second time. She knew when a conversation had ended.
Even though she had hoped it wouldn't.

Damian takes the player gently, careful not to yank or hurt Cass despite the anger and defeat brawling in his chest. He tucks it back into his tunic and places both buds in his ears. The boy looks at his com for a moment before tossing it towards Batgirl in an underhanded toss. He doesn't wait to watch her catch it, because there is no doubt that she will.
He steps off the ledge of the building, aiming his grappling gun at a nearby building and swinging into the night.

Batgirl watched Damian take his things. Then, her body tensed. Of everything she had been interpreting from him, especially in this moment, this had completely slipped by her cunning. Catching the communicator was an effortless gesture. She stumbled forward, trying to grasp at... something anything. "Damian, plea-"Then, he was gone, into the night. Cassandra did not follow him. She watched his form soar into the Gotham night, becoming smaller and smaller until he completely vanished from sight. Cassandra continued looking out in that direction, saying, thinking nothing. Her right arm reached around the back of her neck, gripping it tightly. As Cassandra looked out at the Gotham Police Department building, the inside of her cowl started to feel damp. Her whispers fell deaf on the wind. "What am I doing wrong?..." = End Thread =
