"Back on Earth, we have a word for people like you! Asshat!"
General Information
Full Name:
Samir Barad
Codename or Alias:
The Green Knight
Anonymity
Samir is a heroic and well known figure to the poor settler world of Andraxa. He was a well known figure in the scientific community of Earth as a xenobiologist as well. However he has long been forgotten by the latter in his absence, believed to be dead as a result of a failed exploratory space mission. His exploits on Andraxa have begun to travel and create whispers to neighboring systems, but he is merely a blip on the intergalactic radar.
Gender:
Male
Race:
Human
Age:
30
Place Of Birth:
New York City, New York, USA
Occupation/Status:
Currently, Samir acts as an outsider vigilante and protector of sorts of the settled peoples of Andraxa. When he isn’t observing or studying the densely biodiverse planet he now calls home, he can be seen defending communities against attack from bandits or wild animals, and even mediates disputes from time to time between the different races looking to colonize Andraxa.
Alignment:
Hero
Factions:
Planetary (Formerly)
Canon Or Original?:
Original Character
Powers/Abilities:
Scientific Genius
Samir Barad was one of the foremost scientists in the world in his field before his disappearance, though notably behind the likes of Reed Richards or Susan Storm. That field was that of xenobiology, or the study of lifeforms beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Samir was one of the first in his field to begin and map a catalogue of extraterrestrial beings and lifeforms, as well as jumpstart studies at Empire State University and start one of America’s first Xenobiology departments. His knowledge and general inclination for such studies made him a prime candidate for recruitment for Planetary, where he learned much under the likes of Susan Storm and other geniuses far smarter than himself.
Indomitable Will
Samir has always been a strong and willful individual, though much to the chagrin of his department heads and scientific colleagues. Coming from a poor immigrant family in New York City, Samir has also had to fight and scrape for every single scrap of academic or professional success. His sense of justice and need to defend those who are oppressed or harmed has always been incredibly strong, part of his general worldview and urge to protect the weak against the strong.
Weapons/Items:
Bio-scanner
The only remnant of his old life, and the only sign that Samir might have been something beyond the hero of an alien planet. Issued to him while working as a xenobiologist for Planetary, this device is molded in the form of a pair of enlarged transparent glasses. This scanner allows Samir the ability to scan alien life forms or other matter in real time, relaying critical and non-critical information to its user in a pinch. Left and with nobody human to talk to, Samir has also taken to enhancing and working upon the inbuilt artificial intelligence unit present within the scanner. If his nerd credentials weren’t already clear, Samir has taken to referring to the AI as HAL.
Green Lantern Power Ring
A Green Lantern's ring, considered by some to be one of the most powerful weapons in the known universe, has the ability to affect and use fundamental forces of the known universe, including electromagnetic energies such as gravity, radiation, heat, light, and powerful blasts of concussive force. The rings are supported by a highly advanced AI within each ring, comprising of the Lantern Ring network. The rings use pure energy supplied by a Power Battery, which in most cases takes the form of bright green light. This energy is the green light of willpower of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. The ring can also create fields of force formed from an unknown energy that is bound by the users' will. The limitations of such use are the skill, knowledge and imagination of the user. In theory, the rings can do almost anything, as long as the user's willpower and imagination are sufficient. With the ring, a Lantern gains access to a myriad of abilities.
Energy Projection
The ring can be used to fire blasts of Oan energy or create weapons such as projectiles. The ring can project beams of force powered by the will of the user. Their appearance does not indicate the power of the weapon. The weapon's power is more an indication of the will of the user. If the user wishes, they can alter the form of the blasts.
Energy Construct Creation
The ring can form constructs of Oan energy. The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer's thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer's strength of willpower. A Green Lantern can create any particular items or construct that they can imagine as long as they have the willpower necessary to will it into existence. The constructs are made out of bright green energy, which is a tangible form of pure willpower, and they exist only as long as a Green Lantern is fueling it with their willpower. Items created by the rings are not indestructible and are only as powerful as the willpower of the Green Lantern creating them. The types of constructs usually reflects the ring wearer's personality. Samir's constructs tend to take on the shape and aesthetic of actual lifeforms he has encountered on Earth and beyond.
Will Empowerment
Emerald power rings can be further magnified by the amount of will a user possesses. A wielder can not only ascertain incredible strength if their will is strong enough, but the strongest of wills also acts as a surrogate means of recharging; and in some cases, supercharging their power ring in case they are low on energy at the time. The only drawback being if their will is too strong, the ring may explode, taking the wearer with it.
Force Field
The ring can create various force fields of various sizes and shapes to protect Samir and others around him. With the cosmic scope of a Green Lantern's duties, it is only natural that the power ring is designed for operation in space. The ring creates a force field around the wearer, protecting him from the hazards of the void including filtration of stellar radiation and microscopic particulate matter which would ordinarily be fatal should the space debris strike the ring wielder at high speeds. An atmosphere appropriate to Samir's biology is created inside the force-field while body temperature is maintained and waste products are removed. Gravitational stresses which could cause injury are stabilized for the ring wielder. Theoretically, Samir could use the ring as his sole source of life support.
Superhuman Strength
While not super strength in the conventional sense, Samir, while using constructs created by the ring, becomes capable of lifting/moving tremendous weights far heavier than 100 tons with little effort.
Phasing
The Power Ring allows the wearer to pass through certain solid objects such as walls. Which objects that are not penetrable are not known, but it may depend upon the strength of the wearer's willpower and the density of the object's molecular structure.
Environmental Playback
Upon request, the power ring can recreate a holographic environment based on data in its memory banks. The ring wielder can observe events in a ghostlike state, but the ring wielder cannot alter the outcome of the playback. All objects in the playback will appear in the full spectrum of colors, regardless of the wielder's level of expertise creating simulacra. The power ring will automatically end the playback if outside interference warrants the ring wielder's undivided attention.
Invisibility and Light Refraction
Samir can render himself invisible by willing the ring to bend light waves around his form, as well as that of the power ring.
Energy Twin
The power ring allows Samir to create an "energy twin" of himself that can travel at far greater speeds than that of his physical form. While the energy twin is active the ring wielder remains motionless, his life force is needed to guide the energy twin. The energy twin can not alter its surroundings and may only be perceived by the Guardians or another ring wielder as a green, ghostlike image. Any knowledge gained by the energy twin is transferred back to the ring wielder's physical form upon recontact with the body. The Guardians frequently used energy twins as a means of contacting a Green Lantern. As a rule, Samir can not create actual, independent duplicates of himself, as the power ring cannot create life.
Energy Absorption
The ring can absorb and store other energies. Doing so does not replenish the normal store of energy the ring has. A ring that needs recharging but contains a store of electricity could only discharge that electricity, for example.
Flight
By the manipulation of anti-gravitons and directed molecular movement, the ring allows the user to fly at incredible speeds. In atmosphere, a Green Lantern has been known to fly as fast as Mach 10 in atmosphere by creating an aerodynamic envelope around their body. Towing others, usually within a bubble, Samir's speed is limited to twice the speed of sound or 1440 mph. In space, Green Lantern's speed can be significantly greater and has been known to approach 99% of light speed in normal space. Flight has been shown to be velocities far exceeding light speed. In atmospheres, air friction is not a hindrance since heat is either absorbed or reflected by the ring's field.
Wormholes and Spatial Warps
The power ring grants its wearer access to wormholes in space, enabling the ring wielder to rapidly cut time and distance needed for transport. The Guardians have established a network of wormholes throughout the universe, all of which require a ring of power to enter and approval from the Guardians, depending on the destination.
Limited Cellular Regeneration
The ring has an ability to heal physical injuries, Samir can use the ring to repair injuries to himself or others. The extent of this is limited to, again, the user's willpower, though even then, fatal wounds are beyond the scope of the ring. Regenerating limbs is possible, if there is time to spare, as such injuries take up to two days to fully regenerate. Certain organs can also be healed from damage, the effectiveness of which depends on the severity of the injury. The ring needs an organ to still have some form left to work off of. The ring's own power supply often isn't enough to fully heal injuries of such degree, however.
Electromagnetic Scanning
The ring has a wide range of detection abilities based on the imagination of the user. If Samir can conceive of it, she can probably detect it. Magical effects like clairvoyance seem to be beyond the scope of the ring. Most normal electromagnetic phenomena are within the range of the ring, including radio, radar, television, infrared, ultraviolet, microwave, and high frequency band communications.
Galactic Encyclopedia
Rings worn by the Corps function as references for their users. Having the vast knowledge of the Book of Oa to draw upon, each ring functions as a ready reference on most peoples, stellar events and conditions that may have been seen by other rings or other Green Lanterns. The rings also serve as a repository of adventures had by the Green Lantern and these mission reports were stored in the Prime Battery on Oa for review and training.
Universal Translator
Keeping in mind the myriad of worlds, life forms, and cultures throughout the cosmos, it is understandable why the Guardians added a translation system to the power ring. The power ring can translate virtually any language in the universe, facilitating diplomatic encounters rather than violent confrontations. Complications arise when a frame of reference for translation is not available. That requires prolonged contact with the alien being or race for the ring to create a database for the language and it can afterwards begin effectively translating.
Material Alteration
The Green Lantern's uniform is not made out of fabric. It is created by the Power Ring whenever the wearer wills to wear it. It automatically appears over the wearer's normal clothing, and vanishes when the wearer wills to return to their civilian attire. Most Green Lanterns wear similar uniforms that are programmed into the ring by default. However, each Green Lantern is able to adjust their uniform to fit their own needs, personalities and whims. The green parts of the wearer's uniform are usually very warm or hot to those who touch it, while the black parts are very cold. The uniform also produces a "siren" taking on the form of the Green Lantern Corps' symbol, circling the Green Lantern when active. The symbol, or badge, will not appear on the uniform until after a newly inducted Lantern has completed training on Oa, leading to the term "White-circle" to describe a rookie Lantern.
Ring Duplication
Most Power Rings are capable of automatically duplicating themselves. Each duplicate typically shares the qualities and capabilities of the original ring. While the thought of an unauthorized person getting a hold of a power ring and making duplicates for nefarious purposes isn't unheard of and always a possibility, their ability to inflict damage is limited because each duplicate still requires to be recharged by a personal power battery.
Emergency Beacon
When in distress, Samir can use his power ring as an emergency beacon. The alert can be directed to a Green Lantern's neighboring sector, or it can be a Corps-wide alert.
Homing Beacon
A homing beacon in the power ring can lead one Green Lantern to another. The power ring can be ordered to disguise itself to elude power ring wielding trackers. Most often ring wielders will allow the beacon to signal their location to others.
Mind Alteration
Though the ethics of mind tampering may be debatable, sometimes it is necessary. As the power ring relies on thought and will to operate, mind tampering is not impossible. The real difficulty lies in properly applying the power. There lies a risk of catastrophic damage to the mind should mistakes be made. A ring wielder can use the power ring to erase portions of an individual's memories. Green Lanterns have used mind techniques as part of training. New recruits may be subjected to mind scans by other Green Lanterns or the Guardians of the Universe. They are taught to build mental defenses to protect themselves from psionic attack.
Security Protocol
The rings can be programmed. They are coded to the wearer to make them unusable if stolen. The ring will refuse to take an action that would kill a being unless they are on Oa or with permission. The rings have a lethal force limitation on by default, only able to be removed by the Guardians themselves or through a strenuous process by those gifted and extensively knowledgeable in how the rings function.
Preset Conditions
Commands can be stored in the ring to be executed at a later date even if the bearer is not wearing the ring. Essentially a timer function, the user can, for example, create contingencies for themselves, should they be compromised.
Thought Relay
Otherwise known as a telepathic link. This can be used to beam information from the ring wielder to another being. Green Lanterns have used this technique to share information regarding their enemies during combat situations. Samir can also use this ability when his ring isn't directly on him, as it still works at short distances, but its effectiveness is considerably lesser when compared with a user wearing it on his finger.
Appearance
Image:
Physical Appearance:
Samir stands at 6’2” and weighs in at a scrappy 155 lbs. He is a lanky individual, as a consistent workout regimen on Earth for astronaut training and meager diet on an alien planet have scraped away almost any bit of fat he might have had back home. His hair is long and unkempt, as no razor or brush has touched it in the year or so since Samir crash landed on Andraxa. Not that it really saw the former, too busy for haircuts as Samir was in his professional life. He also sports a rather thick mustache, though his beard is light and patchy in places that aren’t his chin or chops. The stranded scientist also has strong facial features, with a prominent and sharp nose, as well as eyebrows almost as thick as his mustache.
Clothing and Armor:
Samir still sports the Planetary issue undergarments any of its members might wear under their actual spacesuits. Definitely inspired by the old Fantastic Four suits, this outfit in particular is a bit more loose and patterned with stripes of black upon a stitched white surface. The clothing itself is ripped and scuffed in many places, given the harsh environment it and its owner have found themselves in over the past year.
Personality
Sexual Orientation:
Bisexual
General Personality:
Samir Barad is a stubborn individual, always has been. Even as a child his parents and family made light of his willful but kind nature, always standing up for other children on the playground who might be bullied. He is a kind individual, willing to almost literally give the shirt off his back to another human being in need. Beyond that he is an endlessly intuitive and curious person, always willing to jump down any hole or explore any tunnel to see what may lay at its bottom or end. He is also endlessly brash and sure of himself, often to his own detriment when going up against anything stronger than himself. That willpower and lack of regard for consequences have made him a surefire candidate for a green lantern ring. Samir is also always willing to defend the weak against the strong and to put himself in harm’s way. And while he still isn’t the best at it, he has also begun acquiring the mindset required to mediate disputes between different parties, even if he may consider it far more boring than exploring a new world or actually getting involved in a fight.

History:
It was after this move to New York City that Samir was born, and he quickly grew and became immersed in American culture as a young child. He was often the focal point of any bully in his elementary school days, or was until he fought enough that they decided to pick on any other outsider. Samir didn’t let that sit and continued to stand up for his other classmates. Much to the chagrin of his parents, this ensured his having to move to a wide variety of schools. Regardless of where he was however, Samir was always touted by his teachers as an excellent and confident student. It didn’t matter the subject, but he gravitated more and more to any science or math based class that he could find. His reward for such good grades was always trips to the Central Park or Bronx Zoos, something that awoke a passion in life and animals from an early age.
Samir would soon graduate from high school at the age of 16, quickly moving into the far more adult world that was Empire State University. Without help from his already overstretched parents, Samir would work two full time jobs to support himself, in addition to the staggering course load he took upon himself semester to semester. There were many sleepless nights and tired days, but the young student forced his way into a top spot at the university as a zoology and biology double major. He quickly graduated with a bachelors degree and returned as a masters and PhD student, specializing in the new and exciting fields that were xeno and astrobiology. More and more lifeforms from beyond the stars were coming to Earth by the month, and Samir quickly fell in love with the idea of finding new species or lifeforms in the veins of Darwin and other earlier scientists.
One of his greatest achievements was his role in forming the Empire State University’s Xenobiology Department, where he quietly and quickly became one of its department heads at a time when he should have still been teaching his first class. His role in this quickly growing field soon led to his recruitment into the scientific organization named Planetary when he caught the eye of Elijah Snow. Samir quickly became an integral part of Planetary’s extraterrestrial studies, leading the way on a variety of exploratory space missions. This didn’t go on without hardship, however. The young academic was subjected to a rigorous and grueling training regimen along the same lines as the trials astronauts went through at space agencies such as NASA. Samir struggled mightily, but to the disbelief of his instructors and mentors he forced his way into passing through sheer willpower and belief in himself.
It was on one of these missions into space that Samir would finally come into contact with an extraterrestrial lifeform, though certainly not one that was peaceful. A flotilla of alien bandits who roamed the outer edges of the solar system waylaid the young scientist’s vessel and soon captured him. Calling themselves Batarians, these aliens were looking both for scrap and for lifeforms they could sell into slavery. Though Samir would only learn this much later, as these aliens didn’t so much communicate through words as they did with their fists. He would try to fight back, but Samir was soon sedated by a ship captain far too tired of beating down the human for a tenth time.
Samir soon woke up on an asteroid used as a space station near the Batarian homeworld of Khar’shan. It was here that the Batarians sold Samir and a few hundred other lifeforms to an alien who went by the name Ghurkan. The reptilian thug was the brand new owner of a series of farms on a world known as Andraxa, a tropical planet ripe with rich soil and arable land. The only problem, one faced by Ghurkan and many other colonial expeditions, was that Andraxa was as filled with dangerous beasts as much as it may have been filled with fantastic farmland. It might be better to not mention what had happened to so many other shipped slaves of Ghur’kan, but they were the last in a long line of such shipments. It was on the long journey to Andraxa, one that took many months, that Samir would become an integral part of his newfound community aboard the slaving vessel. While unable to speak their language and not too well versed in their physiology, Samir would become one of the only medically minded individuals on the ship that could help with the wide variety of ailments or injuries that occurred on the trip. With a crude form of sign language, grunts, and cursory first aid knowledge, the human quickly became a valued member of the enslaved group.
It was in the orbit of Andraxa after a grueling journey that all hell broke loose upon the slave vessel. His fellow enslaved lifeforms staged an uprising once the green boundaries of their supposed new home came into view. Taking any piece of metal or material they could, the group of a few hundred slaves attacked their new masters and the crew of soldiers keeping order upon the vessel. At the same time as this occurred, an Asari Green Lantern known as Jan’na arrived to investigate reports in this sector of space as to the use of slave labor and other potential crimes. What the Green Lantern found was absolute chaos, death and destruction roiling through the interior of the vessel. She was soon able to find Samir, observing him as he helped defend an alien child from an attack from a Batarian overseer. Jan’na told the freed people on the ship to stay back, deciding to fight through the ship to find her new target, Ghur’kan. The two soon met and battled, though the lone Green Lantern was outmatched in terms of sheer numbers as the alien slaver’s soldiers soon joined the fray. The battle was going well for the Green Lantern until Ghur’kan began targeting the noncombatants who had gathered to watch the battle. Using her ring to shield innocents left her open to attack, and Ghur’kan soon fatally wounded the Asari. Samir and the other mutinous slaves rallied at the sight and attacked, if not a bit too late to help their savior.
The freed slaves soon won, overpowering Ghur’kan, with Samir landing the final blow upon the alien. It was during this fight that Samir found his old bio-scanner, something that Ghur'kan had taken for himself from a hapless Batarian slaver. While still close to death, Jan’na saw this unfold and watched as the victorious human rushed to her side in an attempt to save her. He was unable to do so, though the Green Lantern conferred her ring upon the human. She died before she could explain its power, leaving a befuddled Samir with one of the most powerful devices and weapons in all the galaxy. There was no time to think on the matter though, as the ship had become far too damaged in the midst of the fighting. It crash landed on the planet of Andraxa, with Samir somehow saving all onboard by encasing them in a tulip bulb made of crackling green energy.
Alive from the crash and now somehow able to speak with his fellow freed beings, Samir and the ship’s inhabitants soon carved out a space for themselves on this new and dangerous world. Some were able to charter ships and escape, though the majority decided to stay and make a new life for themselves on the harsh tropical world. There was a measure of revenge to be had as well, and the months that followed their crash landing consisted of Samir and his fellow colonists started to free the harsh plantations they had been intended to work. Communities of freed workers soon popped up all over the world, neighboring a variety of other colonies started by species unaware of the horrors going on just beyond their individual horizons. During all of this Samir began to understand the power that had been given to him, practicing with the ring. He was still not able to use it in its greatest capacity, unschooled in its use as he was. But he soon became a protector and arbiter of the planet of Andraxa, working to defend its burgeoning colonies against bandits, the dangerous wildlife, and even themselves. His use of green energy and strong sense of justice and equality soon had the inhabitants of the planet call Samir a different name, that of the Green Knight. And even though he has had several opportunities to escape and potentially go back home, he has not done so. There were just far too many people to defend and far too many alien lifeforms to study on this new world. News of the slave uprising and an alien using a ring of pure green energy has begun to travel to neighboring systems, however. And a very perplexed Green Lantern Corps is now beginning to wonder why one of their own has taken so long to report back...
