General Information
Name: Tanzo Camina
Identity: Factorium
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Date of Birth: November 9th
Place of Origin: Japan
Occupation: Hero Student
Faction: UA, Class 3-A
Appearance
Visual Appearance:
Physical Appearance: Tanzo is a giant in almost every sense of the word. Standing at over 7 feet tall, and weighing several tons due to his quirk. He is extremely muscular and densely built, with dark skin with a slight metallic hue. He keeps his hair tied back and on the short side, and has brown eyes. Also notably there are several hatches and nozzles on his body, with the most visible ones being hatches on his chest, forearms, and legs, and nozzles in his palms. He usually wears special clothes to cover them, but the hatches do continuously emit warmth and light when uncovered.
Civilian Clothes: Tanzo generally wears T-shirts and jeans, since they're cheaper to get in his size. He also wears special coverings over the largest hatches on his body so he doesn't accidentally emit too much light, heat, or fire, they're designed to be easy to remove if he actually needs to use his quirk, but they aren't very glamorous
Hero Outfit:
Coolant system - the metal "armor" Tanzo is wearing has little to do with defense, wearing a full suit of armor all the time would exacerbate his overheating issues too much. Instead the metal is a very effective heat conductor, with tubes of coolant running underneath near his heat vents. This allows him to exert himself for much longer before suffering the effects of heat exhaustion/stroke.
Hephaestus Gauntlets/Boots - the big contraptions on Tanzo's arms and legs aren't just for show, but are actually to make use of the heat his body produces. Each contains flammable gas that, when he opens his arm and leg vents, ignites and spills out, engulfing the limb in question in fire as he attacks. The gauntlets in particular use rotating components to direct and control the fire to properly amplify the punch rather than just senselessly shooting it everywhere. The gas supply is limited, and so Tanzo can only keep each limb lit for short bursts without exhausting the supply.
Metal Pods - carried in compartments in his gauntlets, belt, and with larger ones on his back, Tanzo carries various pieces of dense metal he's eaten and smelted to compact as much material into as small of a space as possible. These are usually either steel or iron, as those are the easiest to get raw material for. Usually the smalelr spheres in the gauntlet and belt are steel, and the larger rods on his back are iron, due to their respective costs and how he can mix a bit of steel into the iron to create an alloy that's not as weak as iron, but not as expensive as pure steel. He carries these around as a portable fuel source to eat and use with his quirk, so as to avoid being totally reliant on metal from his surroundings that may or may not be part of things he'll have to pay for damaging later.
Face Mask- Tanzo is a bit self-concsious about how weird his face looks when his jaw expands to eat metal, so he designed the scary demon mask to obscure this, it opens up to allow insertion of metal into his jaws for consumption, while not actually showing his face as he does so. He figures if his face looks like it's scary all the time, it negates the danger of freaking people out with the expanding mouth thing... plus it might spook villains to see a giant metal demon coming at them, and the artist in him can't deny the aesthetic benefits of completeing the look with all the fire and molten metal.
Deployable Claws/Foot spikes - due to his weight, certain situations can be very dangerous to Tanzo. After getting stuck underwater during his first year and being unable to climb out due to the walls of the container being unable to support his weight without crumbling, he had this improvement added. Now he can deploy claws from his fingertips and spikes from the tips of his feet that let him dig deeper into materials and get a much sturdier grip, allowing himself to pull himself out of bad situations, though even with these there are plenty of times where he's still too heavy to do so. While he was at it he also had spikes added to the soles of his feet that could dig into the ground, rooting him using his weight so he could resist being moved even by powerful attacks, letting him serve as a wall between villains and civilians.
Utility Belt - every good hero needs one to carry all their mundane hero-ing supplies... but Tanzo also needs one to carry Metal Pods with.
Personality
Bad Habits: Tanzo has a tendency to tinker with things using his quirk to pass the time, often eating metal he probably shouldn't in order to practice forging it into artistic pieces when inspiration strikes him. He's also a hugger, and can sometimes be a bit too loud and enthusiastically friendly.
Goal: Mastering his quirk and learning to forge art with it on the same level as his parents once did, and also to save anyone he can as a hero in the process.
General Personality: To look at Tanzo, one might think he was a hulking brute who became a hero to hit things... but Tanzo is anything but. He's actually one of the gentlest and most friendly guys one could ever have the pleasure of meeting. He's incredibly delicate and delights in using his quirk to create intricate art or crafting useful bits of metalworking for people. He even enjoys baking, though finding baking utensils suitably sized for him can be a challenge. In part this cheery and gentle giant nature is an overcompensation because he knows just how dangerous he could be if he's not exceptionally careful with his size and mass. Being over 7 feet tall and having a body composition closer to metal than to flesh means he's practically a walking tank, and he could break things just by bumping into them. So he plays up his gentler side to keep himself from ever getting complacent and making a mistake, as well as to put people at ease around him despite his imposing figure.
Underneath it though, Tanzo is constantly worried about what might happen if he slips up. Every time he gives someone a bear hug he's terrified he might squeeze them too tight and pop them like a balloon, he wears the mufflers on his hatches not because there's any real danger of him accidentally letting flames out or scalding someone with radiated heat, in truth the odds of such an event are so unlikely as to be hardly worth consideration... but he doesn't feel that way. Even that minute risk is too much for this gentle giant to take, not when there's a perfectly good preventative measure available, even if it is a hassle and covering up his hatches prevents him from venting heat effectively if he exercises with them on. He blames himself for things regardless of where the blame should lay, and works hard to make things right no matter the cost to himself.
Personal Life
Mother: Dana Camina, Quirk - Flame Core - Dana's torso contains an orb of fire that powers her body like an engine, negating the need for food and almost entirely removing the need for rest. It also allows her to superheat her body and breathe fire if she exerts herself, though this is very tiring.
Father: Icaro Camina (deceased), Quirk - Metalman - Icaro's body is composed of a sort of organic metal, and he eats metal instead of regular food, he can also shape the metal in his body to turn his limbs into tools
Siblings:
Extended family:
History: Tanzo was born with big shoes to fill from the moment he was born. Both of his parents were world-renowned crasftsmen. His mother Dana, with her quirk allowing her to work tirelessly without need for food or rest had become a master artist, mastering painting, drawing, sculpting and more. His father Icaro, on the other hand, was a top notch metalworker who worked with his mother crafting her most ambitious projects, using his ability to shape his body into any tool she might need while having the physical strength to keep up with her quite literally tireless pace. The two of them together were a perfect team, bringing some of the world's grand artistic endeavors to fruition. And when Dana became pregnant the two were overjoyed to work together on their greatest masterpiece yet together, a family.
But that sort of perfect story only exists in art of course, reality is far less glamorous. At the unveiling of an art piece meant to commemorate the signing of a diplomatic treaty, a group of villains who were political extremists attacked the ceremony. Tanzo was still weeks away from being born, and thanks to those villains, he would never get to know his father. Dana took the loss hard, but she tried her best to move forward. She gave birth to Tanzo and tried to raise him just like she'd planned to do with her husband, working twice as hard to provide everything they'd planned. She balanced her work and her duties acting as both mother and father to him, pushing herself to the limit. Even if her quirk substituted most of the need for rest, she was still human, and she still needed to sleep sometimes for her mental health if nothing else. But she wasn't getting the time to do that, and the stress was mounting.
Tanzo was five when she finally cracked under the strain of it all. Even at that age he was already huge, the mixture of his parents quirks had resulted in a whole new mutation, with his father's organic metal body powered by his mother's internal flame core he had abilities all his own, but also challenges, such as his body's continuous growth. His body growing faster than his mind made him clumsy, and the weight of that body made his clumsiness dangerous. He was always breaking things, never on purpose, but he was a toddler with the body the size of a teenager's and the weight of a car.
The incident that ended up being the last straw was while Dana was trying to teach Tanzo about art, he'd shown interest in it, and she was hopeful that with his quirk he might become great at it one day and follow in her footsteps, becoming everything she and his father had dreamed. But he wasn't talented at all, he was clumsy, and broke art supplies more often than used them to successfully create anything. The stress was getting to her already, she'd been in a creative slump for over a year now, but she was still hopeful. Tanzo just needed inspiration, that was all. So she brought him to see a statue of his father she had made after his passing. The tribute to his memory and the promise she'd made to herself to push through the pain to raise their child. Tanzo was fascinated by it, and like his mother had hoped it did inspire him... but at a price.
Tanzo, seeing the father he never knew depicted in this way, stepped foward and reached out to touch it with his clumsy body... and he tripped into it. The weight of a car crashing into the plinth holding the statue caved in, and the statue fell, shattering to pieces on the floor. And with it, Dana's spirit finally caved under the weight of everything else as the very representation of her determination to push through it all shattered on the ground before her eyes.
The years that followed were tough, Dana had a complete nervous breakdown, took to drinking, and completely lost her creative spark. Alcohol interacted with her quirk badly too, what with the orb of fire in her body. Her fall from grace was swift and catastrophic. In practically no time at all she fell from the pinnacle of the art world to being a washed up has-been whose name became synonymous with cracking under pressure in some art circles. Tanzo blamed himself of course, though Dana never said anything of the sort to him, she still tried her best to be a good mother. She used what clout she had left to make sure he went to good schools, that they never went hungry, and she always tried to support him in his endeavors. She even kept trying to teach him to be an artist like he wanted. But it wasn't the same, the fire had burnt out, and Tanzo felt he was the one who'd snuffed it.
To say this was a formative moment for Tanzo would be an understatement. As he continued growing up the guilt he felt, and the fear of repeating his mistakes shaped his entire personality. He became cheerful and energetic to counteract his mother's despondance, he became gentle and extremely cautious to counteract his body's destructive potential, and he poured himself into his studies so he could live up to the hopes that had once been had for him. He eventually grew into his body as his mind started to catch up with his growth, and he began learning to use his quirk to smelt metal inside himself and form it into artwork even if his hands were too bulky and impercise to sculpt or paint like his mother. He hoped one day he'd be good enough at it to reforge the statue he'd broken, even if it wasn't exactly the same, he felt that if he could fix that, it'd fix everything. His Mom would smile again and her spark would return...
But he was never going to learn that kind of control on his own, not with quirks so heavily regulated. He needed to use his quirk constantly, with teachers who could help him refine it, improve it, master it. And he knew there was only one way he could do that.
Tanzo applied to UA, on some level he thought it kind of fitting he become a hero anyway, since villains had taken his father away. And he could save lots of people with his strength, and if he worked hard enough, maybe save someone else with his art.
Year 2 at UA - Tanzo had a busy second year of UA
Also early in the year Tanzo had a rough encounter with a villain named Yodai, a man larger and stronger than him who rivaled him in durability as well. The battle was hard fought, and officially speaking ended in a draw as Tanzo was wounded and incapacitated, but Yodai was also badly injured and forced to retreat. However Tanzo felt he had ultimately lost that battle, he had been forced to use every trick in his arsenal just to keep pace with the villain, having been utterly overwhelmed in every category. Yodai had been restricted by being indoors as well, unable to use his flight properly. This humbling defeat inspired Tanzo to train harder to improve his combat ability, instead of only focusing on controlling the strength he already had.
He suffered another rough defeat during a charity visit to a children's hospital... though this one was due simply to the fact that the villain was an electricity user and he was ill-prepared for the fight to begin with. Still, having two defeats in short succession lit a fire in Tanzo to really begin honing his skills in battle, and this would result in him growing in skill and strength over the rest of the year.
Partway through the year, Tanzo met a fellow artist by the name of Atsuro at a charity art show he was attending to sell his artwork and raise money. Prior to this point, his artwork was being sold at quite low prices for the quality of work they represented. Tanzo was making art pieces worthy of being sold to rich collectors, and selling them at the same prices a hobbyist might charge, only making enough money to cover his material costs after donating most of his income to the charities he was selling for.
Atsuro set him straight on this point, giving him an objective outside perspective on the value of his work and helping price his sculptures appropriately. The two became good friends after this point, but the change in prices of his art began a ripple effect in his life.
A masterfully crafted statue at a low price was a great deal for the people who bought it, but top notch art sold at appropriate prices garnered attention. People who bought it would proudly display and brag about it, and this brought popularity and greater sales at each subsequent event. It wasn't long before Tanzo's family name came into the picture, as the rich art collectors who had long been fans of his parent's work took notice of the son of the prestigious family becoming a prominent artist himself.
This was a double-edged sword for Tanzo. On the one hand, he was making money hand over fist at the art shows, even after giving huge percentages of it to the charities the shows were for. Tanzo went from only being able to cover basic material costs and treat himself on occasion to being able to afford as much metal as he wanted and gaining a bit of a celebrity status in the art world. His exploits as a hero student contributing to it as well meant he was getting a lot of attention and funding. This was great for his hero work, it meant he could afford higher quality metals in larger quantities and that was a big benefit for his combat strength, and it was a benefit to his social life, giving him funds to treat his friends to nice things more often.
On the flip side of this though, Tanzo was deeply unhappy with how this turned out. The "elite" art world was something he really wanted nothing to do with, it was why he only ever sold his art at charity events. He didn't want to be the heir to the Camina name. That world had been what broke his mother and turned her into the burnt out and mentally shattered woman she was now. He hated the rich elites and how they ran things in the art world's upper echelons. But he also couldn't just stop doing his charity work without feeling guilty... and the money was good. It let him dote on his friends and helped fund his hero activity. He couldn't deny this development was a benefit to him overall... but the discontent with the situation simmered under the surface.
The last major developments for Tanzo occurred late in the year, while he was visiting an art museum. The Damascus Order attacked with three members, Duende, Chimera, and Gremlin. They set the museum ablaze and intended to collapse it. Obviously he and leapt into action, taking on Duende and Gremlin while another hero engaged Chimera
Over the course of the fight, Tanzo had a chance to speak with the villains he was facing, learning they had no intentions of hurting any of the museums patrons and that they were waiting for the evacuation to finish before bringing the building down. He also learned of Gremlin's past in part, and it resonated with him.
The fight progressed, and while the building was coming down, the other hero managed to prevent the collapse and immobilize and blind the villains. This resulted in Gremlin and Duende being immobilized and Chimera facing off Tanzo and the exhausted hero. The blinded Chimera charged right into Tanzo's attack and was restrained by metal, but a 4th villain intervened before he could be captured, taking him and Duende away, but abandoning Gremlin.
Tanzo and Gremlin had a bit of a heart to heart after the battle, where Tazno shared his own experiences and how he related to her, and he resolved to do his best to redeem the misguided young girl from her villainy and show her a better way to process the anger she had towards society and heroes. He fought hard alongside the pro-hero Momma bear to get her into the rehabilitation program Momma Bear had started that year. The conversation also inspired him to look more into the circumstances of his father's death, and what he learned deeply upset him.
His father hadn't needed to die that day. His injuries would've been non-fatal if the heroes had done their job properly and evacuated civilians to provide them medical aid. The heroes had left him to die in pursuit of their own glory for taking the villains down. This discovery shocked and appalled him, and gave him much to ponder over. Further discussions with Gremlin, now known by her real name Velma, helped him sort his feelings on the matter a bit... but he still needed time to process it all.
The reaching out to Gremlin did seem to be making some headway, which brought some much needed light and hope into Tanzo's life after what had been a rather rough year.
Even so, beneath the surface there were many emotional problems to sort out. Tanzo's endless kindness and gentleness having resulted in an unhealthy tendency to push down negative emotions and not let himself be upset about things. So he's simply avoided dealing with the issues he's facing and bottling them up. It's only a matter of time before that pressure has to be released in one way or another. And with so much going on in the world at large, one can only hope that the method the emotions are addressed doesn't result in tragedy.
Quirk
Name: Living Forge
Quirk Type: Mutant
Power: Tanzo's entire body is basically a walking, breathing, thinking smelter and forge for all things metal. Just from the physical properties of this alone he has some superhuman capabilities. His body is made of a sort of organic metal, which makes him quite durable, quite large, and very heavy. This size and weight gives him a degree of super-strength, as his muscles have to be strong enough to handle his mass, and the mass of his body makes any attack he launches hit quite literally like a moving truck. These however are just side effects of the mutations of his body, his quirk is actually what his body can do with the mutations it has.
Tanzo's mouth can expand, allowing him to insert metal into his mouth and eat it, his jaws being powerful enough to tear through even strong metals with ease. Once eaten the metals enter his body and are melted down with intense heat inside of him, courtesy of his mother's quirk. He can also insert metal through one of the hatches located in his body, the largest being in his chest, with secondary ones on his forearms and his legs, and smaller ones meant mostly for venting heat being located in various other locations. However even the larger hatches are mostly meant for heat venting.
Also located on his body are nozzles, which Tanzo can then eject the melted down metal from his body with. He can do so in two ways, either simply ejecting it as a stream of molten metal at a target, or in a slower more controlled manner. Using the latter method, Tanzo can use the molten metal to "forge" any object he wants. He has to have a clear mental image of the object, as well as an understanding of its structure as he controls the liquid to form the object, otherwise the end result will be deformed or structurally unsound and prone to collapse. Once released from his body the metal quickly cools and solidifies into regular metal once again, just in a new shape.
Tanzo can also smelt metals together into alloys stronger than their base metals, so even when consuming mostly scrap metal that isn't particularly strong or durable in its current form, so long as he has some better materials inside him he can mix them together to create an alloy that isn't quite as useless. Of course the resulting metal won't be as good as if he were working exclusively with better materials, but he's gotten good at making the most of what he has available during his time at UA (with further training he may even learn to create alloys not smeltable by other means that are even stronger than ones conventionally used for things). The smelting process also removes things like rust as the metal is reforged.
If Tanzo doesn't eject the metal from his body, it will eventually be metabolized into his body much like digesting food, so he cannot keep a bunch of metal stored inside himself indefinitely, though this process is slowed down considerably if he is gaining nutrients from organic food with his human stomach, since his body doesn't need to digest the metal as much (though due to his body's composition getting every nutrient he needs from organic food is impossible, so he cannot stop the digestion of his metal reserves entirely).
Supermoves:
Ironman! - Tanzo's body is naturally pretty durable, but it's still malleable because of the flesh-like properties. So Tanzo has learned to eject metal from all the nozzles on his body at once, forming a suit of armor around himself out of actual metal for defense. This takes a good amount of resources to use, so he usually uses cheaper metals that he can get in bulk to do this, hence the name, as iron is one of the most reliable cheap metals he can carry. If he can help it he'll also carry around some metals that aren't very good at conducting electricity and fuse them into this suit of armor to shield him from electric quirk users, though this isn't always an option.
Steam Explosion - One of the issues Tanzo faces with his quirk is that his body is prone to overheating when he engages in heavy physical activity. The hatches in his body do work as vents that regulate his body temperature normally, but they can only do so much. Luckily there's usually a decent amount of moisture in the metals he eats, so when he's overheated enough, he will open every hatch on his body at once and expel all the moisture he can in the form of steam. This serves as a good way to both cool himself down, and also as an attack since the superheated steam can scald those around him. Unfortunately he can usually only do this once a day or so unless he acquires an actual water source, as building up enough moisture in his body through his metal consumption alone is too inefficient
Hephaestus Slam! - this move only works when he's wearing his support gear. Tanzo vents heat through the hatches in his arms or legs, igniting flammable gas held by his costume and engulfing the limb in question in fire as he uses it to punch or kick. Technically speaking, this barely counts as a supermove since it's almost entirely the support gear, but it was visually flashy so Tanzo gave it a name.
Forge of Creation - not a combat move at all, but rather what Tanzo calls using his quirk to produce artwork. He hopes to one day refine this move enough to create true masterpieces worthy of such a auspicious title.
Drawbacks:
Fuel reserves - ultimately Tanzo doesn't produce molten metal for himself, he has to consume metal and melt it down. That does mean there is a limit to just how much molten metal he has available at once and thus the size and number of things he can create. This is compounded by the fact that his body slowly metabolizes metal he isn't using throughout the day much like a stomach does to food, so he can't be at full capacity all the time. Thankfully his large body does have quite a bit of storage space, and he can refuel using any metal in his surroundings that he can get his jaws on, but he still has to be careful and manage his resources.
Overheating - Being made of organic metal and having an entire forge in your torso has some challenges as well as benefits. When Tanzo is engaging in heavy physical activity his body temperature can rise quickly, even more so if his hatches are covered up and unable to vent heat. While he has support gear and some tricks to mitigate this, prolonged fights can result in him suffering from heat exhaustion or heat stroke much quicker than most people. In extreme cases this can even be life-threatening as he can quite literally cook his brain and organs.
Bodies of water - Large bodies of water present multiple challenges for Tanzo,
1) first of all, swimming is utterly impossible for him. He weighs far too much to swim even with support equipment, and can have difficulty getting out on his own as most ladders and ledges he could pull himself out with can't handle his weight either. He can hold his breath for quite a while thanks to his odd physiology, but he does still need to breathe eventually.
2) Furthermore, the hatches used to vent heat from his body aren't completely watertight, and water can get in through them even when closed. This doesn't pose a risk of drowning as his respitory system is seperate, however it does cause problems with his internal forge, as his flames are doused and his body temperature lowers. The flame core can't be completely put out for good, and once he is out of the water it will eventually restart, but if he is submerged too long it can temporarily shut his forge down, rendering him unable to smelt metal or use it to create things. If for some reason this were to happen for a long time he would also suffer from malnutrition due to the lack of molten metal to digest to support the metallic parts of his body. He also feels incredibly sluggish when his forge is turned off.
Electricity weakness - dude is made of organic metal, electric shocks are especially nasty for him.
Weight - as much as Tanzo's weight works in his favor making him hit like a truck and be incredibly hardy and tough, it does sometimes pose a problem since he needs to remain on solid ground capable of supporting said weight, and things like climbing, swimming, traveling through deep snow or on ice, etc... are all very difficult for him. Plus if he ever falls from a high place the impact with the ground will be quite unpleasant, and god help whoever or whatever he lands on.
Fighting Style: Tanzo is a tank in almost every sense of the word. He's big, he's metal, he weighs as much as a small tank, and he hits like one too, and that's before he forges a large blunt object to smack people with. That's really all there is to it most of the time. He is rather smart and plenty capable of using his quirk to create more specialized tools and stuff, or to shoot molten metal at someone with the nozzles on his body, but there's rarely much need as there's few situations he can't solve by forging a big hammer and smacking the problem with it.
