Master Thief
Perhaps it is in her blood, but Janice is an incredibly talented thief, charlatan and criminal. She can pick any lock, break into any building and steal pretty much anything she sets her mind to.
Martial Art Adept
Janice took a lot of lessons in various mixed martial arts, and has even created her own style of in-flight combat. While she favours the ancient art of running away, Janice can hold her own in a fight if she needs to.
Engineering Adept
Janice taught herself engineering to get the Beetle suit working, and continues to develop her skills alongside her accomplices. She knows enough to fix her suit, and has the resources to tinker with it whenever she finds the time, adding new gadgets and equipment to an ever growing arsenal.

"I give myself some structure and parameters, and then within that, I do whatever comes to me. Organized chaos. Yes, I'm a perfectionist, but I'm also extremely impulsive and able to very quickly go, 'Never mind', and then run the other way."
Master Strategist
Janice has an incredible mind for organisation. It is a blessing and a curse, as she cannot start a project without meticulous planning, folders of colour-coded notes and procedures. She rarely enters a situation without meticulous strategy and about ten different exit strategies. She has a notebook entry for every hero who she has crossed paths with, and even one for her fellow villains.

Expertise in Law
Janice works as a criminal attorney, and a good one at that, focusing on small-scale criminals and masked villains. She has a vast of knowledge regarding the law surrounding capes, villains and the superpowered community in general, allowing her to weave and twist herself through the judicial system if she ever finds herself there. In addition, her quick wit and sharp tongue means there are few lawyers who can stand up to her verbal assault, and she has an extremely high win ratio in court.

Weapons/Items
Beetle MK III
The Beetle suit, which is currently in its third iteration, gives Janice a lot of physical enhancements stealth features, and an array of weaponry which allow her to play with the big leagues of Heroes. Originally stolen from a disused warehouse, both Janice and her accomplices have made several enhancements over the time she has worn it.

Originally stolen from a disused warehouse, both Janice and her accomplices have made several enhancements over the time she has worn it.
Superhuman Strength
While wearing the suit, Janice can lift up to a ton of weight without issue.
Superhuman Durability
Bullet proof, shock proof, resistant to physical attacks and able to withstand pressure up to five hundred feet, the Beetle enhances Janice's standard human capabilities to something far greater.
Wings
Four beetle-like wings on the back of the suit grant Janice a flight speed of up to one hundred and fifty miles per hour, as well as incredible maneuverability and agility in mid-air. They are made of a lightweight yet durable material, able to take the same kind of abuse that the rest of the suit can.
Booster
For a real burst of speed, or if the wings are incapacitated, a jetpack built into the back of the suit can release a burst of energy for a short period of seconds. This isn't something that can be repeated or maintained for a long time, but more like a surprise escape method for times when Janice has no other choice.
Repulsers
Built into the palms of the the suit, two repulsors give Janice the ability to fire concentrated energy beams from the suit's power source, concussive blasts that can thrust aside plenty of objects or melt through steel if concentrated for a longer period of time on a single point. Janice can also control the intensity of the beams, from a large blast to a small pin-point flame which can be used to cut through glass as part of her thieve's tools. As it uses power from the suit, Janice can't use them too often without recharging, otherwise risking the suit from failing, unless she is standing in bright, direct sunlight.
Filtration Mask
The mask can filter out toxins, poisons and other breathable gases or substances that would otherwise be harmful. It also allows Janice to breath underwater, or fly to heights with reduced oxygen without issue.
Goggles
The suit's goggles have thermal capabilities, can become tinted to reduce sudden bright lights or flashes, contain night vision settings and also link up to her communication devices to read messages (or watch videos when she's bored).
Solar Power
The whole suit absorbs solar energy, converting it into power. If it remains in direct sunlight, then Janice can use it to full capabilities for hours. A lack of sunlight reduces the use time to less than half a day, far less if she uses the energy-draining repulsor beams.
Thieve's Tools
A pouch of picks and tools for gaining easy access to locked doors, windows and for use on anything that needs stealing.
Appearance
"Apparently more people would love it if I smiled more, if I was more 'approachable'."
Physical Appearance
Janice is a woman of average size, standing at 5'6" and weighing around 120lbs. She wears her Puerto Rican ancestry proud, with jet-black hair and deep, dark eyes that reflect her inner no-nonsense attitude. Janice has a toned, slender form, which shows some muscular definition beneath her skin.
Clothing and Armor
Janice wears smart, comfortable clothes when working. Socially, she wears striking ambiguously gendered outfits that always seem to change from occasion to occasion, revealing a passion for fashion. She usually dresses down only at home, where she can often be found in grubby vests and overalls while working on her Beetle suit.
Personality
Sexual Orientation
Bisexual
"I get really weird when I'm not working. I have to keep working."
General Personality
Janice is a fiercely independent, no-nonsense woman with a quick wit and a silver tongue. If she applies herself to a task or activity, she will look to complete it to maximum perfection. Janice is like a terrier in that regard, and if she gets her teeth into something she won't let go.
She is a fearless individual, and even without her Beetle suit, Janice will fight tooth and nail no matter what opposes her. Of course, she isn't stupid either, and knows when to fall back, run away or give something up if it is impossible. Janice knows when a fight is lost, and when to throw in the towel before things get worse.
Janice is an intelligent woman. She can pick up many skills with ease, and isn't afraid to study hard to learn something new. Janice self-taught herself most things that she knows, and rarely relies on anyone else except for when she admits she needs help.
Janice is a highly organised individual, a tactile enemy who will store information about someone in order to formulate a plan against them if she encounters them again. This applies not just to her fights against heroes, but in the courts as well, and even in daily life. If you annoy her, then be aware that next time you cross paths with Janice Lincoln you will find that she has already prepared to verbally tear you apart at the seams, picking on your every weakness. Janice doesn't handle humiliation very well.
Janice's true goal in life is to be recognised as her own person, whether that is with her law firm or as a masked villain. Ideally, she wants to read a headline in the Daily Bugle that names her as Spiderman's #1 nemesis, or the most wanted thief in all of New York, or named the Best Criminal Attorney in the state. Then she can rub it in the face of everyone who tried to push her away from her own goals.

History
Early life
Janice was born an only child to a single mother. Her father was a mystery, someone who had crossed paths with her mother during her years on the street. Now, Sofia Ortega was a hard-working woman, doing her best to keep both her and her daughter from the streets, and into the clutches of the organised crime gangs of New York City.
Janice grew up mostly on her own while her mother worked several jobs. She learnt to cook and clean, taught herself math and English, and was fiercely independent. It gave her mother the freedom not to worry about her, focusing on making the money they needed for Janice's education, food and clothes.
Sofia Ortega was killed in a heist-gone-wrong, while she was depositing a cheque at the bank. Janice went into foster care, and while the family was fine, they clashed with this new independent child. She didn't want to be told what to do, and their resilience really brought out a rebellious streak in her. Janice was still a diligent student at school but began to hang around the wrong crowds, indulging herself in petty theft and minor criminal activities.
Tombstone's Daughter
Janice soon learnt that crime was in her blood, as one day she was literally snatched off the street by a car full of thugs and mobsters amd transported to Gotham City, where she was brought before a criminal she knew well from the news. Alonzo Lincoln, the villain Tombstone, introduced himself as her father. He wanted her to come work for him, as he had been made aware of her thieving prowess. A father and daughter enterprise.
Tombstone taught Janice all the tricks of the trade. She shadowed him and other criminals while they went about nefarious deeds, picked up skills with lockpicks and stealth, and generally became a very adept young thief. However she felt at odds all the time. Tombstone ordered her to do as he said, and she was always known as "Tombstone's daughter". While she had taken her father's name, Janice felt no love for him.
It was when he let slip that he had been the one who had killed her mother, among other civilians, that Janice made her plan of escape. She took thousands of dollars from him and his organisation and fled the mobster's grasp. She fled back to New York, bought herself an apartment and began to organise what she was going to do. Janice wanted to make a name for herself, and didn't want anyone telling her what to do.
Janice Ortega, Attorney are Law
Janice studied hard, catching up with her grades and attending college until she managed to get enough qualifications to open a private attorney's office. She began with criminals, but soon moved onto masked villains being processed by the courts. Janice found that she had a knack for reducing their sentences, a sharp tongue before the judges which allowed her to save plenty of vigilantes and costumed criminals from being thrown away without parole.
In fact, she learnt so much about it that Janice realised just how easy it was to get away with anything shy of murder. Those street-level spandex villains, who stole a few hundreds and got beaten up by minor heroes, rarely got prison time. Most of it was fines, or community service, and they would be back on the street in no time. What was stopping anyone from donning a mask and doing the same? So Janice came up with an idea. Attorney by day... and masked villain by night.
Beetle
The first iteration of Beetle was nothing more than a purple spandex suit with night vision goggles, but Janice found that she was talented. She could get in and out of high security buildings with ease, but it was the minimum to no security buildings she targeted. Janice made herself a good sum of money, then would lie low until the heat died down.
Still, she didn't stand out much among the other villains of her tier. Janice hadn't been named anything, and had no Wikipedia page made up. Even the Daily Bugle was fairly quiet, attributing her to other masked villains instead. It irked her somewhat, so she decided to try and make an identity to be better known for her deeds.
Janice found herself breaking into a derelict warehouse, and hit the jackpot. It had been a secret hideout, it seemed, for some costumed hero who she had never heard of. Computers, gadgets, equipment... and a suit. It was labelled as "Blue Beetle", and it suited Janice to a tee. Well, everything but the colour. She smuggled it home with some expensive looking kit, and studied the suit in her apartment.
It was far more advanced than she had expected, and seemed to have it's own power source. Beautiful insect wings sprung from it's back, and it came with a very sophisticated mask. Janice took it out for a spin, and found it had far more abilities than she first thought. Super strength, flight and heightened durability, as well as powerful repulsor beams like Ironman or Cyclops from the X-Men.
So, with a lick of purple paint, Beetle was born.
Spiderman, the Menace
Beetle made a name for herself from then on. Known as a prolific thief that could evade police and heroes alike, Janice made a lot of money. More importantly, she became infamous in New York. Infamous enough that she soon crossed paths with Spiderman. Janice was lucky, as the webbed menace webbed her up and left her for the police, but she managed to escape before capture. It nearly spoilt her secret identity and ruined her life.
Beetle and Spiderman came to blows on several occasions, but each time Janice made better and better contingency plans. Spiderman, however, foiled her attemps at crime over and over. She became more and more frustrated, eventually having to lie low and focus on her attorney work.
The Sinister Six
Beetle had been missing for a few months when she was contacted. Janice received the communication, an invitation from a man named Mysterio. She had heard of him, knew of his run-ins with Spiderman, so Beetle agreed to meet. The purple villain was back in action. Mysterio and their accomplices helped Janice to upgrade her suit, becoming faster, stronger and more dangerous than before. They introduced her to members of Maggia, and she was able to take on work for them as well, an enforcer working in New York. Now when she encountered Spiderman, Beetle could bite back.
It was time she became known as someone more than Tombstone's Daughter. It was time for Janice Lincoln, A.K.A. Beetle, to become a famous villain in her own right.
Role Play Sample
The building was dark, the last of the work force having already left. It was just security now, but they were confined to the first floor. There was no prescident for a potential thief to get in through the top floor.
Beetle landed in the dark on one of the high window ledges. She peered through the glass, seeing nothing but an empty room beyond. All right. This would be easy. Beetle raised a palm, igniting a small thin flame which began to cut through the glass. She carefully slipped inside, placing the disc of glass against the wall, and looked around.
Beetle moved silently through the room, until she reached an office. The door was locked, but against her tools and expertise it posed no problem. Beneath the mask, Janice couldn't help but smirk. So much for security.
The office held a large desk, strewn with papers, folders and a general assortment of mess. She moved behind it, peering through her night-vision goggles, moving folders aside until she found...
"Aha!"
It was a folder full of images of her. Labelled "The Beetle Menace of New York!!", it sat under a similar folder for Spiderman. Beetle tossed that folder to one side, laying out a few extra photos that she withdrew from a pocket of her suit.
"I better see Beetle on the front page tomorrow."
Beetle exited the Daily Bugle head office out of the window, as silently as she had entered. If all went to plan, then she would be vilified even more in tomorrow's paper. New images of her commiting theft would be released, and Spiderman wouldn't even get page 3... Janice smirked again to herself. It was going to be a good day, she could feel it.
