Visual Appearance:
"Night Terror" form
[spoil][/spoil]
Physical Appearance: Kurin is a young man with a thin build, jet black hair, and black eyes. By most metrics he isn't unattractive, but his appearance is marred by constant bags under his eyes that he covers with eyeliner, and to call his skin pale is an understatement. His skin is so pale it's almost eerie and ghostly, due to him being hypersensitive to light and unable to get regular tans like most people. Furthermore his body is often covered in a multitude of small scrapes and bandages thanks to his quirk, which is difficult to control in the best of times, and often injures him when his creations get out of hand.
Civilian Clothes: Kurin tends towards long-sleeved shirts and jackets, along with jeans. He also tends towards hoodies, hats, and gloves to get some additional skin coverage to shield him from sunlight, and to a lesser extent from his quirk. He also often wears a modified backpack that conceals an apparatus worn on his back (see outfit and support gear)
Hero Outfit:
Light-repellent fibres - The cloth making up the oufit is made of a spcially engineered fibre that repels the vast majority of all light that hits it, this makes the space covered by the cloak and cowl about as dark as is physically possible, both sheltering Kurin's sensitive skin from light, and providing the perfect place for his shadow creations to form or take shelter, as bright lights weaken, harm, and destroy them. A side benefit of this allows Kurin to use his quirk to form a layer of shadow underneath his clothes that can act like body armor if he's attacked with weapons and the like.
Night-vision goggles - since Kurin most frequently operates at night and his cloak shouds him in even more darkness, seeing things can be a bit of a hassle. So Kurin wears night-vision goggles with two settings, one being a simple magnification of existing light sources sent to his eyes, enough to counteract the light repellent clothing and grant him the same amount of sight as anyone else in a dark environment, perhaps slighly superior. The other mode is standard night vision technology for use in complete darkness. The goggles are built with a failsafe to shut off if light over a certain lumens threshold is detected, so as to avoid blinding him or damaging his eyes if lights are reintroduced to an area (this does not however negate the blinding effect of a flash bomb or other similar bright bursts of light meant to obscure vision, it only negates the amplification of the effects by the goggles and leaves Kurin to deal with things using his normal eyesight)
the final function of the googles is a small diagnostic display in the corner of his vision informing Kurin how much stimulant he has remaining, so that he knows when he's low on "fuel" and needs to retreat.
Stimulant pumps - located on his back is an apparatus that he wears both in and out of costume (concealed by a modified backpack when in civilian clothes), this apparatus consists of syringes and vials of a powerful stimulant. Kurin's quirk has severe consequences if he ever falls asleep, and the more he uses it while awake the more sleepy he becomes, and so he requires a constant supply of a specialized stimulant to keep himself awake. The number of doses loaded into the apparatus can vary depending on how many he expects to need for an operation, but the current iteration of the decive does cap at 10 loaded doses before he needs to remove it for a resupply, something which can take between minutes (1-3 posts) for a partial refuelling in an emergency, to hours for a full refill.
Sedative failsafe - surgically implanted into his upper back, Kurin has a powerful tranquilizer that can deploy into his bloodstream in seconds, negating the effects of the stimulant and forcing him to fall asleep. Kurin himself knows of the manual trigger for this failsafe, which he consented to under the pretense of a last resort method to escape capture by triggering his "Night Terror" form. The manual trigger involves a concealed needle kept on his person that he produces and sticks into himself to pierce and trigger the release mechanism. He is unaware of a secondary remote trigger however, which can be triggered by certain individuals ranked above him in his faction to cause him to fall asleep against his will in order to cause a rampage, or to deploy his last resort when he himself is prevented from doing so. To date this remote trigger has never been used, as it would destroy Kurin's trust in the faction's leadership and likely lead to him desserting or betraying them.
Personality
Bad Habits: Kurin has a lot of nervous ticks, biting nails, chewing on pen caps, tapping his foot, and even chewing his hair when it's grown long enough to do so. He also takes a sort of sadistic pleasure in scaring others.
Goal: Revenge on society for failing to help him with his quirk, making others feel the same fear he lives with constantly
General Personality: Kurin is a very damaged and twisted individual, thanks to his quirk and history and the failure of Japanese society to get him the help he needed, his personality and worldview became dangerously warped. He's a bit of a sadist, loving to see others being frightened, and harbors deep resentment towards society as a whole. He also trends toward nhilistic and fatalist attitudes. Additionally his constant state of sleep deprivation, while not physically detrimental due to his quirk, has mentally led to him being short-tempered, impulsive, and irrational. He is unhinged, unpredictable, and filled with a dark anger that, while in some ways justified, causes him to lash out and cause harm to others for his own satisfaction.
Personal Life
Mother: Irina Timore (deceased), quirk - insomniac - Irina lacked the physiological need for sleep, provided she was stimulated she could choose to stay awake indefinitely, though she still felt fatigue and would choose to sleep in order to rest and recover rather than relying on continuous use of stimulants.
Father: Manfred Timore (deceased), quirk - shadow puppets - Manfred possessed a form of Umbrakinesis that allowed him to produce a shadowy substance from his body which could then be formed into various autonomous puppets that did his bidding. Doing so required conscious effort to mentally picture the desired form, and also to maintain control and stability of the creations.
Siblings: Katrina Timore (unknown, presumed deceased), quirk - Shadow Drones - like her father Manfred, Katrina could manipulate a form of shadowy substance produced by her body to form autonomous creations that served her. However the influence of the altered brain chemistry from her mother Irina's quirk allowed for a greater number and complexity of creations, along with less need for active maitenance of control over them.
Extended family:
History: Kurin was born into a normal life, one might even call it a good one. His parents weren't wealthy, but they were solidly middle class and had plenty of time to spend with him and his elder sister, who absolutely adored him. It was a happy family without many concerns for things like money or security. His older sister Katrina had also developed a more potent version of their father's quirk, and had a great amount of potential to become a hero one day, which would no doubt improve the family's situation even more.
For the first four years of Kurin's life, everything was great. He had friends, a loving family, everything a child could ask for. The only real challenge he faced was a proclivity for having nightmares, but this was little different from any other young child really, he would grow out of it eventually. Or at least, that's what everyone thought.
It was when Kurin was five that things went horribly wrong, all because of his quirk manifesting. It was very similar to the improved version of his father's quirk possessed by his sister, but there was a difference. His sister could shape her shadows into anything she wanted, limited only by her imagination while awake, and her creations harmlessly melted away to nothing when she slept. Kurin however found that the only things his shadows would form would be the many nightmarish creatures that plagues his dreams at night. What was more, they wouldn't automatically melt while he slept like his sister's did.
Immediately this was a bit concerning and bothersome for his family. The things Kurin created were generally more aggressive and dangerous than was ideal, and they quickly learned that since they didn't go away when he slept, but he was no longer able to control them, they would become hostile and harm either Kurin himself to wake and torment him him, or anyone close to him. Still, the concerns were minor at this point, many a youth went through a tricky adjustment period when their quirks developed, needing time to learn to manage their abilities and use them safely. Kurin was brought to counseling and therapy to help him with his control issues, and it was assumed that given some time he'd overcome these issues.
Unfortunately this optimistic assessment didn't account for a crucial factor, Kurin's continued proclivity for nightmares. Naturally he was afraid of his quirk, it formed monsters straight from his nightmares, monsters he couldn't always control, and that would sometimes attack him or those he loved. His parents reassured him it would be fine, and the doctors and other adults trying to help him said the same thing, but as time passed without much improvement, his fears only grew. And as is often the case with fears, this eventually led to new nightmares.
At this point, it was still possible to avert the coming tragedy, had anyone noticed the changes in Kurin and connected the dots. He was avoiding sleep more and more now, to minimize the time he wasn't in control, and when he slept his creations were becoming more and more malicious, and were attacking his family more frequently. More concerningly than that, he was forming new creatures while still asleep, though nobody noticed this subtle but very important detail. If his quirk could continue creating more monsters while he slept that weren't under his control, it was only a matter of time before a new nightmare that was a bit more difficult to manage manifested as he aged and his quirk grew stronger. But nobody noticed, there were some concerns that his quirk was growing stronger quicker than usual, making it a trickier to learn to control, but nobody connected the dots tying all these factors together into the inevitable tragedy
And then it finally happened, Kurin had a nightmare about losing control completely, being consumed by his quirk and becoming a monster that killed everyone he loved. And that nightmare manifested into reality using his quirk, coating him in shadowy flesh and acting out on the very fears fueling the nightmare. He became a monster, glowing white eyes and malleable flesh twisting into claws and other deadly implements as he prowled the house. His family never stood a chance, and the next day the bodies of Kurin's mother and father were found by authorities as a very distraught Kurin called the police after waking up covered in their blood. Kurin's sister was never found, but the presence of blood in her room that matched her DNA left little doubt as to her fate.
The police did their best to handle the situation, they tried to get Kurin the help he needed, and tried to shield him from legal ramifications for the killings. But they failed, the neighbors had heard the horrific sounds coming from the Timore household that night, and someone leaked the story to the media. It was a waking nightmare after that. The story was sensationalized, and the media milked it for all it was worth. Kurin was soon twisted from an innocent victim of a tragic quirk accident into a demon child who had murdered his parents and eaten his sister... there was even a horror movie made from the story. There was increasing public pressure to prosecute Kurin for the murders, and despite the efforts of police and more compassionate parts of the public, they eventually were forced to cave.
Kurin was tried for murder and cannibalism, and sentenced to life in an asylum for the crimes. He was still only 7 at this time, as he was told he would be locked up forever after years of being screamed at and villified as a monster and a villain. The fact he'd killed his family shoved in his face again and again, never giving him space to grieve. No therapist on Earth could salvage this amount of psychological damage. The night before Kurin was to be sent to the high-security asylum that would be his home from then on, he snapped, letting himself fall asleep and letting the nightmare take over again. He slaughtered every police officer, doctor, and therapist in the police station before escaping into the night.
Kurin was a wanted criminal now, even many of those who had defended him previously found it hard to excuse the slaughter. A manhunt was started for him, and as dangerous as Kurin was when sleeping, he couldn't sleep 24/7, it was inevitable he'd be caught eventually... had a certain shady organization of villains not caught wind of the situation and found him first. A false body was discovered by police that looked just like Kurin, leading them to believe he'd taken his own life out of guilt and despair. The media had a field day with that story as well, now pivoting and portraying him as a tragic child and a victim of circumstance, while naturally refusing to take any responsibility for their role in the tragedy of course.
Kurin was then raised outside of Japan by his rescuers, contrary to what one might expect, they did quite little to brainwash him into a puppet or force him to join their ranks. They had very little need to resort to such crude tactics. Kurin was already mentally broken by what he'd been through, all that needed to be done was tell him the true story of how society had failed him as he grew old enough to understand it, and encourage his darker impulses, he grew up into the perfect member of their organization all on his own, eager to take revenge on the society that had tormented him so much. Sure he wasn't a brainwashed devotee of the group's philosophy or ideals, but such pawns were of limited use regardless, lacking in creativity and always at risk of being freed from their brainwashing by meddlesome heroes if captured. Instead he simply grew into a young adult who worked with them by choice, no unreliable or stifling brainwashing required.
And so now age 20, Kurin returns to Japan, the nation and society that tormented him so cruelly, ready and eager to unleash all the nightmares they'd made for him back upon them, and make them all live in fear and suffering just like he had. He would plunge them into his nightmares, and laugh at their cries for mercy and forgiveness, for he had none to give them.
Quirk
Name: Night Terrors
Quirk Type: Emitter
Power: Kurin can produce a shadowy substance from his body that can form into various autonomous constructs, much like his father and sister could. However the influence of his mother's quirk altered his brain chemistry in a more destructive way than his older sister. Kurins shadow creations almost exclusively take the form of things he fears or has feared in the past, most particularly the form of his nightmares. Furthermore his ability to control them is more tenuous than his relatives, and his creations can sometimes disobey him or even bring harm to him if his control slips.
However this brain chemistry alteration allows him to create more stable, and thus more dangerous, minions than his relatives were able to, as they can persist independent of him for periods of time so long as they occasionally return to him to replenish the substance they're made of, and they are not destroyed while away. In general small creations can only last half an hour to an hour away from him, larger and more complex creations last longer, but still cap out at around 3-4 hours at the absolute limit, and typically still only end up lasting about an hour since they're generally involved in more combat and get exposed to more light that saps their strength. Kurin can create aproximately 10 times his body weight worth of shadow "mass" unaided, pushing it further requires heavy use of his stiumlants to keep up with the strain, and controlling more than this amount dramatically increases the risk of losing control.
Kurin's control over his creations lessens the further they are from him, and once out of sight they tend to follow sets of pre-programmed instincts or motivations based on the nightmares that they're based on, and sometimes Kurin can imbue specific goals into them before sending them off if he makes a concerted effort, allowing for the sending of his nightmares on missions by giving them specific tasks he wants them to accomplish, such as "attack heroes in this location", "follow person X and spy on them," or "sneak into place X and steal/break thing Y." However once created and released from his direct control he cannot control how they go about the objectives, as he doesn't maintain a telepathic link with them once they leave his sight.
He can continue to communicate with minions within his line of sight, or that he is actively controlling through a mental link, what information can be transmitted through that link varies depending on the minion in question and how he designed it. The more intelligent or specialized the nightmare is supposed to be, the more detailed the info can get. For example, if he were to make a floating eyeball based of the nightmare of being stalked and watched by a sneaky monster, it would likely be able to transmit visual data to him as long as he maintained the link, or could later report back to him and impart the memories of what it saw to him. However a big monster meant just for combat might only be able to transmit whether it is hurt, how many fights it was in, and a general sense of who it fought and what they did in the battle. Some minions can use verbal communication as well, if they were designed as such. At ranges beyond his immediate vicinity, the only information Kurin can monitor about his creations is their physical condition and a vague sense of their location in relation to him, so destroying a spy minion before it can report back would deny him any info it had gathered other than the fact that it was discovered and killed.
Another, far more negative side effect of Kurin's altered brain chemistry is the fact that the part of his brain that controls his quirk never goes to sleep, even if he himself does. This combined with the fact that his quirk manifests things from nightmares has resulted in a very nasty transformation occurring when the quirk is left without the conscious guidance of Kurin's waking mind. Producing large amounts of shadow, Kurin's body becomes encased in the substance his nightmare minions are made from, creating a nightmare version of himself that he calls "Night Terror." Night Terror is chaotic, destructive, and very violent, an amplification of all Kurin's worst impulses. Without conscience or inhibition to hold it back, Night Terror goes on a murderous rampage, having full access to Kurin's quirk to modify its own body to produce additional limbs, enhanced muscles for super strength and speed, wings, weapons or claws, or anything else it might need to act on its dark impulses. This form persists for several hours before the strain of the quirk forces Kurin into a state of true unconciousness, the Night Terror is subdued by sufficient damage or exploitation of its weakness to light (see drawback 1), or until Kurin wakes up and regains control.
Fortunately, the inherreted alterations from his mother also negate Kurin's physiological need to sleep, allowing him to artificially keep himself awake through the use of drugs, though overuse of his quirk can overcome them and put him to sleep anyway (see drawback 3), requiring multiple doses to combat it and thus making him reliant on a finite amount of resources before needing to withdraw.
Supermoves:
Aspect of Terror - Kurin does not name most of his go-to creations as supermoves, but when engaged in combat directly he uses this move. Forming a layer of shadow armor over his body to protect from weapon attacks and the like, and forming large and powerful tentacles from his body made of shadow to strike at, grapple, and otherwise attack his foes. The tentacles are rather versatile, capable of forming spikes, blades, suction cups, and even mouths. Kurin cannot modify them quite as easily or dramatically as Night Terror can, but he applies much the same principles, hence his name for the technique.
Murky Depths - A last ditch move that drains a lot of energy, shadows spill out from Kurin's feet and coat the ground in an expanding circle around him in darkness with the same consistency as tar or ooze of some kind, in addition to being sticky and difficult to move through, tendrils of this ooze will reach out from the ground and attempt to grab those trying to fly above it or those stuck in it already, dragging them down and attempting to bind them to the ground. If successfully restrained, the ooze will then cover the mouth and nose of the victim to suffocate them. Maintaining this technique is extremely taxing on Kurin, and he only performs it when he feels cornered with no other options, or when he feels extremely confident that he will not need to fight after using it.
Drawbacks:
Light sensetivity - Kurin's light hypersensitivity isn't limited to just his skin getting burnt easily, his shadow creations are also extremely vulnerable to bright lights, paricularly sunlight. When in well-lit areas their capabilities are reduced, and they grow gradually weaker until they have to return to Kurin to replenish their strength, as the light eats away at the shadow substance that makes them up. Sudden applications of bright light from high-powered beams, flash bombs, etc... can destroy them outright, or at least severely wound them, though standard strength commercial flashlights are not usually enough to do more than deter them and cause pain. This weakness applies to Kurin's Night Terror form as well, and sufficient application of bright light can stop the rampage early. Additionally certain types of attack such as fire can be problematic for the shadow creatures as they not only inflict direct damage, but also generate light. While in most cases this isn't enough light to kill them outright through the light alone, it makes the attacks even more damaging than they otherwise would be.
Control issues - Kurin's control over any autonomous nightmares he creates is tenuous at best, and decreases the longer the creation is active, the further it is from him, and the more powerful he makes it. At his best, and under ideal circumstances, he can control them without issue. However the further from this idealized scenario he gets, the greater the risk of losing control becomes. His creations can begin acting against his intentions, falling back on behaivors reminiscent of the nightmares they're based on instead of obeying his orders, and in more severe cases they can even turn on him and attack him. In the most extreme cases he can even lose the ability to dismiss the minions and force them to demanifest, resulting in them rampaging until he can either re-establish control, or until their bodies run out of fuel and they "starve." Kurin's control is tied to his alertness and willpower, and thus the danger of control loss increases the more tired he becomes, as well as if he is shaken by something mentally.
Energy drain - producing the shadow substance to create his minions puts strain on Kurin's mind, making him increasingly sleepy. The more he produces, the more tired he becomes. This has twofold consequences, the more immediate being that his risk of losing control over his minions increases the more tired he becomes. The second consequence is the danger of actually falling asleep and assuming his Night Terror form.
Stiumlant reliance - To counteract the energy drain of his quirk and avoid being forced into Night Terror form, Kurin uses the stiumlant pumps described in his equipment to keep himself awake. In theory if he had unlimited stimulants to use, he could use his quirk without restraint, but practically speaking he can only carry so many doses on him at a time, and their effects are gradually weakened by the quirk as he uses it. Furthermore he has to use doses to stay awake at all, having typically not slept for weeks or months, thus making him utterly reliant on the drugs to function both in and out of combat. Denying him access to these stimulants would cripple him and make capturing him quite easy, provided one could contain Night Terror's rampages reliably
Night Terror - While the destructive power and toughness of the Night Terror form is in some ways beneficial, Kurin lacks any control over the form whatsoever, lashing out at any and everyone, friend or foe. He cannot act towards any objective other than mindless rampaging, and often does more harm than good to any plans he might've been working towards. Furthermore the form, while cunning as a combatant and aggressor, is not very intelligent, and can be baited, manipulated, lured into traps, etc... It will learn from past mistakes much like an animal, and so the same exact trap might not capture it twice, but also like an animal it does not understand the complexities of the trap, only how to recognize that something looks like the trap that hurt it last time, and so minor alterations or deploying similar traps in different contexts can still fool it.
Fighting Style: Kurin is somewhat cowardly, sending minions to fight for him as his preferred method of combat. When engaged directly he forms large tentacle-like limbs attached to his body and uses them to strike and grapple his foes, though he usually attempts to flee rather than continue to engage in direct combat. He also prefers to use as few minions as he can to accomplish his objectives, using his quirk more conservatively and creating smaller numbers of stronger minions rather than swarms of weaker ones, even if the latter method might be more effective, as he wishes to preserve his energy and avoid falling asleep at any cost. He will even outright surrender rather than allow himself to succumb to Night Terror if given the choice.
Night Terror is Kurin's opposite in pretty much every capacity, while it technically has full access to his quirk's ability to form minions, it hates doing so, instead modifying its own body and attacking foes directly without fear. It attacks ferociously, without any sense of restraint, and only minimal consideration for defense unless its targets possess strong light sources to harm it with.
