The Mirror, a favored watering hole for D.C. lobbyists, policy analysts, journalists, and various other politicos was abuzz with activity, the atmosphere filled with happy after-work conversation, perfect camouflage for a sensitive phone call, one of the reasons why The Mirror was Claire's favorite bar.
"Yes, Deputy Director Mallory," said a blonde woman into her cell phone, a confident smile on her lips. "Surveilling Project Tundra has continued to be a great success." Claire's latest assignment had her researching U.S. adversaries' metahuman assets, an assignment she greatly enjoyed. The assignment allowed her to familiarize herself with the Great Ten of China, but she preferred gathering intelligence on Project Tundra, a Russian FSB Spetnaz program focused on anti-metahuman methods and measures. Apparently, the FSB has been funneling assets and anti-metahuman weaponry to 3rd parties such as the Wagner Group to be test them in the field against active metahumans, hero or otherwise.
Claire had no intention on stopping such a program. On the contrary, she supported the FSB's aims and methods, and on her recommendation, the C.I.A. simply continued to monitor the FSB in their anti-superhero activities. The surveillance and research gave Claire many ideas about applications in the field as well.
"I was currently tracking the movements of a merc supposedly in possession of high-caliber Kryptonite rounds. I'm assuming paid for by the Wagner Group or FSB. But now, with the recent attempt on the President's life, I dunno what I'll be up to. Half of Langley has been reassigned to look for this...teleporting knight?"
C.I.A. agents work on an assignment for several months to a few years before being reassigned to a different assignment, sometimes in a different continent. The attack on the President had caused the C.I.A. to reassign half of its staff immediately, some of them years before they were scheduled. As for the rest, including Claire, they were left to deal with the scattered work of everything else.
Claire, with her decorated record and unique position as an agency metahuman, had the rare privilege of being able to choose her assignments instead of being simply assigned one, as long as she chose within a reasonable time frame. The only question for Claire was which dumpster fire should she focus on next. If she were also assigned to finding the President's assailant, she'd skip the meetings, reach out to Waller to assemble Task Force X, and be done with it.
Instead, the world was Claire's oyster, and she was a directionless pearl. As far as her intelligence told her, Task Force X currently wasn't on any missions, COBRA was currently quiet, and other notable organizations that caught her eye, such as the Juarez Cartel, fell under other jurisdictions such as the DEA's. Claire drained her shot glass and signaled the bartender for another drink, feeling an itch to teleport somewhere far away, or visit a firing range to let off some steam. "Lord knows we have more than enough resources for the Oval Office knight, someone will get him soon enough, without needing my help. Any recommendations on work anywhere else, Deputy Director? And don't tell me to take vacation time."
