It was a perfect day, the weather sunny this afternoon at Bethesda Fountain. A young woman sitting at the edge of the fountain played her guitar and sang, loud enough so everyone in her general vicinity could hear her, and more importantly, well enough so that everyone around her wouldn't mind if she continued. Her sticker-covered guitar case was open on the ground in front of her, with crumpled and folded dollar bills scattered inside. In front of the guitar case were two cardboard signs, one saying "DONATIONS WELCOME", the other saying, "BUSKING TO GET TO CHINA".
She sang with ease as her fingertips played over the strings, and not just because she had done this one thousand times before, but also because she felt completely relaxed as she sang, as though she were completely alone instead of soliciting donations. She had been playing for two hours now, and made 31 dollars in that time, enough to cover her dinner. However, she wasn't playing just for herself even if this was currently her only source of income. In her opinion, if you could hear her, she was playing for you too, so the music was for everyone.
Once her current song came to a close, she ended it with a flourish, even earning some claps from a few people who had been watching her. She thanked and winked at a pretty woman who approached to give a donation, lifting a can of coffee to her lips to take a sip. The day so far truly was idyllic for her, and she felt grateful. This was simply her daily life.
