The library had proven to be an oasis for Niels because most of the school's teens and kids would rather be elsewhere. Therefore, emotional impressions were more limited, making it easier to focus. Therefore, Niels collected his things after dinner and went to the library. It had the pleasant library scent of old books, news books, old wood, and cleaning fluids, a very appealing combination. Niels had found a spot at one of the larger tables in the library's middle. He knew others from class would find their way there, so it felt rude to sit in a corner.
Niels wore brown jeans, a matching brown knitted vest, and a green flannel shirt. He made notes and glanced at the dictionary, pushing the reading glasses back up his nose a little now and then. His backpack was carefully placed against one of the table legs.
"Let's see... Road is Via..." Niels muttered to himself. "Ruina, Musca, Clementia... Ruination, Fly, and... clemency." Or did Clementia count? He did not want to risk getting the same word as everyone else... that would be embarrassing. "Cura... that is Latin... I think?" He flipped a few pages. "Yeah, Care-Cura."

"Infortuniun... Unlucky. Oh, my stars, is this right?"Parsley dropped her bag haphazardly by the table, slumping into a chair and holding her head in her hands as she looked at the book before her. In contrast to Niel's attire, she was in a green hoodie over loose tracksuit bottoms, and pink fluffy slippers. After class was supposed to be for relaxation, after all.
Her gaze drifted upwards to frown at Niels. "I'm so lost. How are y'all getting this? Are we - how are we supposed to do this? Ah, Niels, my oldest and dearest friend, I need a lotta help, and I need it now!"Parsley sat back, huffing to herself. Who knew latin could be so hard? She kept opening the book at random, but just kept taking her back to Unlucky. "Well, screw you too, Parsley!"

"Why not try with luck?" Asked Niels softly, looking up from his notes. "Not the action, but the word luck. Or you could start by looking for words in the dictionary that end with an -a." He smiled before reaching out to flip a few pages in her book, stopping at a random place... and after a few seconds scanning it with his eyes, saying:
"Here you got gloria, glory, and here you got gratia, thanks, or grace. Since the Romans did not have The, you could also say that gloria is the glory." He pulled a scrap of paper, wrote down gloria and the translation, and put (the) beside it. "You remember what Miss Rogue said? If you change the A at the end to, say, AE." Below gloria, he wrote gloriae. "How would this change the word?" He looked at Parsley, waiting for her to reply. There was no use in him giving her the answers outright, but he could give her a hand.

Parsley was frowning hard as her brain ticked over, staring at the words like early man would staring at a smartphone. She tapped her pencil to her mouth as she worked over the word she had written - Gloria, Gloriae - her brow creased and contorted with fervent concentration.
After a few moments, Parsley raised her head to look at Neils, eyes so full of hope, struggling and pain as she slowly formed the idea in her mind. She grimaced before she spoke, unsure in herself and slightly embarrassed at the effort.
"It would make it... plural? 'Glories'?"

Niels' smile grew as she spoke, and he nodded. "Yes, that would be the plural version; those end with AE," he said, happy that she was getting it. "If we keep at the nominative, either as The Glory or The Glories, so Gloria, or Gloriae. In turn, the AE could also be used in genitive..." He paused, thinking... " Of- things, like Of the Glory. So, let's start simple, and go with the things ending with A, and add in AE ti see what we get,"
He looked at Parsley from the paper.
"You give it a try; pick a noun. No need to stress about it; it'll be fine." and Niels made things sound like they would be fine, a bonus he had as an empath.

Parsley's mouth split into a grin when Niels confirmed she was correct, a fist pumping into the air in the silent library.
"Yes! Score one to Parsley. Okay, what about... Fortuna. Luck, or fortune. So, Fortunae is Fortunes. Or... a lot of luck?"
She tapped her pencil to her lips again, still frowning as she tried to cement the idea in her mind.
"Silva... forest. So Silvae... forests! Hey, this ain't too hard. I think I'm kinda gettin' the hang of it..."

"See? You're getting it," Niels said, "It's all about checking boxes; once you check enough, it makes sense. Looking up words in Latin can be a lot of fun, even if they don't work for the homework." He began to flip in his dictionary, "Like the Latin word for green is viridis. I did not know that, but now I do." Maybe not applicable for the homework, but it was fun to know; Niels liked the colour green.
Nils continued to nod as Parsley came up with Silva, which made sense.
"Yeah, and you could do earth, which is terra-terrae, or Flamma as in Flame can become Flammae or Flames." Niels had much fun with this. " And here we have a doll, which is the pupa, or dolls become pupae." He looked to Parsley and grinned happily. "Aren't languages so cool?"

Parsley couldn't help but grin at Niels' happy face. She flicked through the dictionary herself, landing on a random page.
"Herba... herbae... yeah, I can see why you find it so fun. I mean, ain't gonna lie, it makes y'all a bit of a dork."
Parsley winked at the boy as she scribbled down a few more words. It was growing on her, but it still hurt her brain to think there was more than this. English... she could just about get around English.
"In a good, lovable way, of course. I think I could get the hang o' this. Boy, I hope Rogue doesn't make it too hard next class."
Parsley scratched the side of her head with the eraser end of her pencil.
