Born in Philadelphia, Rhodey grew up in the poor black neighbourhoods and could have easily fallen in with the wrong crowds, had he not instead focused on schooling and eventually joining the United State Marine corps. Serving two tours he eventually fell into contact with Tony Stark, the two men striking up a friendship that continues to this day, despite some hiccups.
When Stark donned the Iron Man suit, Rhodey was the main point of contact between the genius inventor and the United States government. He was not without concerns however, as one with Stark’s personality and history was liable to be volatile. While he tried to help his friend; events in Tony’s life escalated to the point where Rhodey had to step in. The resulting argument ended with Rhodey leaving the billionaire alone with his thoughts, and Rhodey in a suit of Iron Man armour.
Taking the suit to the military, Rhodes oversaw its modification – adding armaments suited to him and storing it away for a rainy day – which came when he was nominated as Liaison for the US Government to the Justice League. Donning the armour, he took up the name ‘War Machine’ – a title disparagingly given to him by Tony Stark.
