Background:
Matsuoka Saeko has always been meant for greatness.
Born to a prominent mobster family, and first at that, she was informed from a young age that she would be the best. Or suffer the consequences. With a genius intellect and shining ambition, she surpassed her family’s expectations one after another as soon as she could even communicate. A great sense of family and loyalty was instilled in her. She would do anything to uphold her family’s position in Buster City. That position is of an outwardly benevolent yakuza family. Invested in the higher goal of keeping their “people” in prosperity and happiness for all of their days, only taking action when necessary to preserve that lifestyle for the little people. That is how everyone has agreed to see and speak of the Matsuokas. To do anything else would threaten the daily peace of the city. And if you threaten the peace, watching your back isn’t likely to do you much good. They believe in the original purpose of the mob: taking care of their communities where the police would not. They have members in the force making sure things go their way on the official side of things, too.
She grew up in this world of pretenses. On the outside, it was kindness, entrepreneurship, charity, protection, etcetera. Go a few layers deeper however, and you’d run into the things deemed necessary to secure their position in the world. Smuggling, Blackmail, Torture, Murder. Saeko was introduced to this world at 9, when she was made to watch her father’s men rough up a man who had been selling drugs to youths in their territory. She thought it was the children he’d been protecting at the time, and so she felt a sense of pride swell within her, as well as an odd joy at seeing the violence being carried out in front of her. A few years later she learned he was more concerned with the corruption of his eventual workforce than the children as individuals. Even as a child herself, she understood that she was to see those of a lower status as children in need of protecting. Sheep in need of herding. And a sick sheep had to be taken care of before it infected the others. If it couldn’t be cured, it had to be culled. That was just the way things are.
As she continued to grow, she was made to focus on her studies. She already knew she was a healer, and so she threw herself into preparation for medical school. She graduated high school early, and went off to college. She stayed close to home due to her family ties, and began “helping out” the family business at this time. Because she had such an aptitude for the work, and due to her insistence that she be educated in as many areas as possible due to her current and eventual status, she received little to no pushback in most things she attempted to insert herself into. She did rarely overstep and get herself into something her father didn’t want her involved in, at which time she would inevitably face his wrath. But the old man was called so for good reason, and he wasn’t getting any younger.
Saeko’s hubris and insistence that she was talented enough to pursue several specialties ended up landing her as an Internist, with her primary focus in Cytology (the study of cells), and secondary focuses in neurology, hematology, pulmonology, cardiology, and nephrology. She became a general physician at 24 and began working full time for her family’s company as a private physician, board member, and advisor. On the side, she used her medical knowledge and healing ability to become a master torture artist. She could make people good as new! Only to hurt them all over again. She found the cycle of relief, knowing they were about to go through the same pain all over again to be very useful for gaining information.
When she turned 27, a little over a year ago, her father suddenly fell ill. He had an incurable kidney disease, and no matter what she did it would return and continue to cause him pain. She felt like a fool for not engaging more in hospice work while she was in school, but it was all she could do for him now to stave it off as long as possible. The old man, Hidetaka Matsuoka, was dying. The grandfather of Buster City. And she was next in line. Oh, her uncles would try to come to power for a time. She might even let them if it meant a little more time in the field. Her own father hadn’t taken power until he was 45, after all. And she already couldn’t move quite as freely as she wished.
Most recently, her father stepped down as the board chair, leaving her to assume the position. She still entrusts most paperwork to those beneath her, but she knows she only has a short time to align the world in her favor so that she and the people entrusted to her can continue to live lives of freedom and peace. Whatever the cost of that may be, there’s no going back now. She is already on the move.
Appearance
Profile:
Description: Saeko is a very attractive young woman. With russet hair always pulled into a sleek braid and bangs framing her delicate features, she doesn’t suit what you’d expect a typical gangster to look like. If anything, she looks like a higher-up office worker. She IS a top floor associate of Matsuoka Industries, but she’s rarely seen out of her suit and tie. High-waisted slacks and a tucked in button-up accentuate her curves without putting them on (obvious) display. Everything she owns is tailored to a tee, and with her ability to adjust her physiology down to the cell she never needs to worry about her size changing.
She is 5’8”, 130 lbs exactly, and her body has been practically designed to her ideal proportions. Down to the last millimeter, she is her own idea of physical perfection. While she is kind-faced and exudes an aura of trust, there is something underlying that she cannot ever completely conceal. A mystery and purpose, how she feels is often far more telling than how she looks. However, with her eternal poker face, be careful of trying to determine when she is being true or false.
Abilities
Gear
The Gun
A generational gift, her signature gun is engraved with the family name and symbol. With a magical shifting barrel, it is near impossible to identify bullets that come from this gun. The smallest imperfection can clear her in an instant, so she never need discard it. It is always either on her person or nearby.
Tools of the Trade
She has an array of tools for torture, mostly made up of medical supplies as they make perfect sense for someone of her profession to have. Her entire MO is based in plausible deniability, and she leaves no evidence of her harm- if she allows the charges to live. At most she will leave a scar, faded to look years old, so that any reports cannot be taken seriously. Not that people typically report after what she does to them.
Money
Lastly, Saeko has cash to throw around. She has a larger budget than she could ever realistically spend herself, and she often uses it to buy things like silence and loyalty.
Abilities:
Healing Factor
As well as being a licensed physician, Saeko has a supernatural ability to heal and regenerate cells. Her own body does it instinctually, without command, but she has stretched this talent to be able to heal others as well. While healing herself of even the most grievous injuries or apparent death is a background activity for her cells, healing someone else does require her focused attention (and for her brain to still be intact). She cannot bring the dead back to life, though it hasn’t stopped her from trying. Even though she can put a body back together seamlessly, she cannot instill it with her own supernatural resilience. If life has already left the body she is working on, she cannot bring it back no matter how flawless it may appear. She herself is very hard to kill, as her cells will automatically regenerate and her body does not react negatively to organs being separated from the heart or brain like normal humans. She has been “killed” before. It didn’t take. Her other weak spot in her healing factor is her inability to correct an age and disease. She cannot make a diseased organ like new. If the cells are removed, she can grow new ones where they once were. But if the body is determined to die, she cannot prevent it forever. She herself has never been seriously ill, nor is she likely to ever be.
