Gabriel has the ability to understand the structure and operation of complex systems. This is without any prior training or special education, and comes naturally to him, even if what he is looking at is entirely new to him. He understands how things work, and how to fix them if they are broken.
However, knowledge is a dire curse. Gabriel is compelled to understand more, and more, a gnawing, growing need to learn and know about how things work. This has manifested in a fierce, unstoppable desire to kill other evolved humans, mutants and superpowered individuals just so he can understand their brains. Gabriel calls this the Hunger.
Gabriel only needs to study and understand someone's mind for a short time in order to use their power or ability. This needs to be completed by inspecting a part of a victim's mind, usually the top half of their brain. Once Gabriel understands a power, he can use it indefinitely afterwards. His power allows him to learn how to use a power quickly, learning skills and intricacies at an advanced rate.

Gabriel is a fairly well-built and handsome man, a body that shows he puts some effort into it but not enough to make a difference. His face is sharp and defined, stubble crossing his chin and cheeks before leading up into short, preened black hair. His eyes, shadowed beneath thick brows, are black and devoid of colour, predatory and glinting in the dark. There is nothing to see behind those eyes, other than malice and hunger.

General Personality:
Gabriel is an egotistical, cold and calculating man. He is unforgiving, uncaring and unstoppable when he has something on his mind. Gabriel doesn't care about life, about other people or anything other than sating his own personal Hunger for knowledge and understanding.
Gabriel is a highly intelligent, perceptive and tactical person, never entering a situation without thinking it through beforehand. He is violent, not above murder or torture to get his own way. A man with severe parent issues, a weakness of his is wanting to find family love. A father figure is all he ever wanted, but never truly found.
Gabriel often toys with his victims, acting sarcastic and playing with them until he strikes them down without warning. He is a volatile man when things aren't going his own way, and lashes out with violence if he becomes angry.
Gabriel is egotistical and pompous, viewing his cause as the only true one in his mind. He sees himself as greater than others, and has a poor view of other people with abilities. In his mind, Gabriel can use any power to better effect than other people could. Nobody understands their own power like he understands his own.

Gabriel was raised by Martin Gray, a master watchmaker who taught him all the tricks of his trade. From a young age, Gabriel always hungered for more knowledge. He spent his childhood trying to learn everything he could, especially how things tick. His focus on watches was his largest label, and he spent hours and hours taking apart and rebuilding his father's watches.
Even as a teenager, Gabriel never felt like he fitted in anywhere. Even his parents seemed off, and he was always on his own during school. He found solice in his watches and in learning to understand things. It was all he ever wanted to do.
Gabriel always knew he was special, however. Different. Better. Why couldn't he show everyone else? He spent his young adult life resenting superheroes, mutants and evolved humans. Where was his power? Why wasn't he being recognised?
Eventually, Gabriel was approached by a man named Chandra Suresh, who had a hunch he was an evolved human. Of course! It all made sense. However, after many tests, Chandra concluded Gabriel was normal after all. Enraged, he stole Chandra's notes, leading him to another potentially evolved humans location.
Gabriel fully intended just to talk, to find out more... but after a fight, he killed the other man. Without thinking, he split the man's skull, studied his brain, and found his true ability. Understanding. He could read this brain and take their power for his own.
After acquiring the man's power, Sylar knew his true purpose. He would sate his Hunger, killing others who were wasting their powers and taking them for his own. Then, after he had gained a grand arsenal, his real work could start...
The man ran, ran through the darkness, ran past empty streets and buildings. Someone was chasing him. Something evil, something predatory. He turned a corner, paused for breath. Footsteps echoed from behind, and he froze as something seemed to grip him, lifting him into the air.
Stepping from the shadows, hand outstretched, Sylar allowed himself a sly smile. The man squirmed, but it was pointless. Prey trying to escape the talons of an apex predator. Slowly he dragged the man towards him, eyes glinting like onyx in the dark.
"You made a good chase, but it was all futile, really. You don't know who I am... but even if you did, it wouldn't help."
The man moaned in fear, but Sylar simply tutted, wagging his free hand with a single index finger.
"Come on, that won't help. Mewing like a kitten... do you think you're worth the power you hold inside?"
Slowly, Sylar lifted that index finger, pointing it at the man's forehead. As a red line began to form, blood spilling down the screaming face, Sylar's grin widened. This evening had definitely been worth the effort.
