“Checkmate.”
Name:
Uryū Ishida
Gender:
Male
Race:
Quincy
Canon/OC:
Canon
Visual Appearance:
Physical Description:
Uryū is a teenage boy with a slim figure, who, for all his presumptuous demeanor, seldom appears that intimidating. With that said, Uryū is very fit for his age, and actually a match for someone like Ichigo when it comes to plain human strength. He appears rather like a stereotypical nerd, with parted medium-length black hair and rectangle-framed glasses.
Clothing/Misc. Items: In his time as a student (and general casual clothing at that), Uryū dresses in the Karakura High uniform of a white buttoned-down shirt, slacks and polished shoes, in addition to a formal black necktie.. His Quincy uniform is similarly clean, comprising of several bright-white pieces draped over his body, with two blue lines intersecting to resemble the Quincy cross. A tunic, leggings, and mantle make up a Quincy uniform, covered in many places with the blue cross of the order.
Sexuality:
Heterosexual
Goals:
Uryū is split between his new (re)commitment to his duties as a Quincy, and the bonds he has come to value with his friends in Karakura Town. He is not one to neglect anyone he considers worth protecting, though as his father becomes more insistent in the path he has chosen, and what the future holds, Uryū is going to have to make a firm decision on who he will continue to support, and who he will have to leave behind.
General Personality:
Uryū Ishida is a solemn, resolute person, with a cool demeanor that sharply contrasts with Ichigo’s bullish demeanor and Orihime’s bright-eyed aplomb. He carries himself as one who has everything under control, with an answer to any given situation. Though this isn’t always true, it is the outward persona Uryū exudes, to varying degrees. He is not completely unfeeling, often going to surprising lengths to care for his friends, including sewing various clothing and accessories and going to other trivial - though thoughtful - lengths to underhandedly show his concern for those he cares about, however much he may insist that he doesn’t actually care. When it comes down to it, Uryū is a very honorable and chivalrous person who goes to great lengths to protect others, especially women.
However, a not insignificant part of Uryū’s distant persona is very much a part of who he is. He is abrasive towards those who do not understand him, or worse, get in his way. He gets along with few people that aren’t his friends, and it is very difficult for Uryū to make new friends (if he even wants to). He is a highly focused individual, keenly defined by his intellectual standpoint and his forthright nature as a Quincy. He is more than likely to butt heads with Ichigo on just about everything, and nearly as likely to lecture him and his other friends on their laziness, from schoolwork to how they train. Uryū’s sense of pride and self-worth has hardly diminished in his adventures thus far, for all the hardships he has faced, from being humbled by Ichigo in their first encounters to temporarily losing his Quincy abilities. If anything, Uryū is more confident than ever before, ready to face the new challenges that wait on the horizon with emboldened gusto.
In light of recent developments with his father, however, Uryū has become sternly devoted to his duties as a Quincy. While he will not forget the bonds that he has formed with his few friends at Kamakura High, and some members of the Soul Society, Uryū has all but left that in the past. As one defined by the skills and duty of his upbringing, he is fully committed to not only rekindling his long dried relationship with his father, but with the Quincies that he believed were all dead.
History:
Uryū Ishida was born to Ryūken Ishida and Kanae Katagiri in Karakura Town. His upbringing was a rather tumultuous one, marked by an increasingly strained relationship with his father. Uryū took after his grandfather Sōken, awed by his being a Quincy, and everything that that entailed. The fact that Ryūken looked so bitterly upon the profession as “a career that is unprofitable” only wedged the gap between him and his son that much deeper. Uryū longed to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as a Quincy, fascinated with the principles of chivalry and righteousness against the monstrous Hollows. He respected the Shinigami, standing opposite the Quincy, though sharing similar goals. This only made Uryū’s dreams that much more tragic when Hollows killed his grandfather right in front of him. Uryū quickly developed a hatred for the Shinigami, who were apparently incapable of saving a human life when it mattered most.
Uryū grew up with the likes of Ichigo Kurosaki, Orihime Inoue, and Tatsuki Arisawa, though he never hung out with them much. He mostly kept to himself, having no interest in affiliating himself with a street punk like Ichigo, and his interactions with Orihime and Tatsuki never reached far outside of the classroom. This changed when Uryū began to intercept Hollows that Ichigo and Rukia were trying to hunt around town. He was equally disgusted and amused by Ichigo’s circumstances. Uryū had known of his high spiritual pressure, when he first became a (substitute) Shinigami, and even Rukia’s true identity when she attempted to blend in at the school. In an attempt to prove his superiority as a Quincy to the Shinigami that Ichigo was pretending to be, Uryū goaded him into a challenge to kill as many Hollows as possible within twenty-four hours. Uryū’s boasting quickly grew out of hand, however, and the Hollows began to overrun the town to the point that a Menos Grande appeared. Only through the combined efforts of Uryū and Ichigo was the great Hollow defeated and normalcy returned to Karakura. Uryū admitted to his hubris for causing this mess in the first place, and began to reconcile with Ichigo… he still won, though.
Uryū tried, along with Ichigo, to stop Byakuya and Renji from taking Rukia back to Soul Society, though he wasn’t nearly a match for Renji. While the others trained with Yoriuchi and Urahara, Uryū isolated himself, using his Sanrei Glove to master his Quincy Reishi techniques. Although Uryū insisted to the others that he was only interested in helping them to regain his honor for losing to a Shinigami, he considered himself Rukia’s friend, and was ready to do whatever it took to save her from her fate. When they get separated upon their entrance into the Seireitei in Soul Society, Uryū ends up with Orihime, and spend most of the time avoiding detection from Kenpachi Zuraki and the Squad 11 patrols swarming the streets. Eventually, however, Twelfth Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi forces Uryū to take a stand to allow Orihime to get away, and to try and protect Mayuri’s Lieutenant when he tries to kill her right in front of him. Mayuri was apparently fascinated by Uryū, the Shinigami only incensing him further as he bragged about how he was largely responsible for the fate of the Quincies, in addition to experimenting on many of his kind over the years. Forced with an ultimatum, Uryū released his Sanrei Glove to unleash all of his Quincy energy to destroy Mayuri with an overwhelming amount of Reishi in the area. This came at the cost of losing his Quincy powers permanently, though that was a price Uryū was willing to pay, not only to bring justice to a monster like Mayuri, but to make sure that Orihime got away safely. As such, Uryū wasn’t of much use during the rest of the events that followed, but that made him no less committed to helping his friends.
When they returned to Karakura Town, Uryū kept to himself, little different from before he first began to hang out with Ichigo and the others. Somewhat bitter over losing his Quincy heritage, the young man resigned himself to a mundane life, accepting that his part in the supernatural world was over. Or, he did, until Hollows began to appear in Karakura Town yet again. He tried to help Ichigo and the others fight them off, but it was no use; he was just an ordinary human, helpless against the monsters. That was when he was saved by his father, the last man in the world he thought to see again. He revealed to him not only that he was secretly a Quincy, but that he had an ultimatum: come train with him, and regain his Quincy powers, with the condition that he must no longer associate himself with the Shinigami. That meant no longer being friends with Ichigo, Rukia, and the others he had helped against Aizen… but, if it meant becoming a Quincy again… better yet, getting some answers out of his father for once, then that was a sacrifice Uryū was all too willing to make.

Physical Abilities
Archery
Uryū is an incredibly skilled archer, able to perform spectacular feats even with ordinary bows. Though his archery training primarily falls under Quincy techniques and using a Helig Bogen to fire arrows, Uryū is more than capable of using a standard bow and arrow if he must.
Hand-to-Hand Fighting
Uryū is nowhere near the kind of brawler that Tatsuki is, nor does he have the street experience that Ichigo does, though he is still rather skilled in fighting without his Heilig Bogen. Uryū uses quick, precise strikes, his form representing martial arts to a cursory degree, though far short of what Tatsuki is capable of.
Intelligent
Uryū is an incredibly intelligent person, beyond being the ideal student prior to leaving school for the Ryoka Invasion and his subsequent training under his father. His perceptive and deductive skills are uncanny, able to root out minute details with seemingly little difficulty. Uryū applies his mind often in battle as well, never hesitating to exploit a weak point once he has discovered it. Uryū is also multilingual, being familiar with some Spanish and German, and is remarkably skilled at sewing and first aid.
Quincy Spells
Reishi Manipulation
All Quincies are capable of drawing upon the residual spiritual energy in any given environment. Used in joint with his own pool of Reishi, Uryū may generate weapons, not the least of which is his Quincy bow, along with many distinct techniques and applications of spiritual energy, both universal skills as well as Quincy-specific techniques.
Hirenkyaku
This Quincy technique allows the user to move along a flow of Reishi generated by their feet to move at incredibly high speeds. This is akin to a Shinigami’s Shunpo or an Arrancar’s Sonido. Hirenkyaku can also be allowed to move a user across the air, something that Uryū had mastered to surprising effectiveness by the time he faced Mayuri. His expertise with Hirenkyaku is at an extent where instead of simply moving to his destination through the use of Reishi flow, Uryū may instead create a platform of concentrated spiritual energy to move, along with up to a couple other subjects on the surface area of the platform.
Ransōtengai
This technique forces the user’s body to remain mobile by forming strings of Reishi, using these strings to move their body. In cases where a Quincy is paralyzed or otherwise unable to move, they may use Ransōtengai to continue fighting. This skill is incredibly rare, enough that out of over two thousand subjects Mayuri experimented on, he did not find a single subject possessing it, until he met Uryū.
Quincy Archery A major part of a Quincy’s training involves archery, as the Heilig Bogen is the Quincy’s signature weapon. Uryū is no stranger to this, and has become incredibly skilled with using his arrows throughout his adventures with Ichigo and his friends thus far. As it stands, Uryū can kill a Hollow with a single arrow, and has become very technical in how he applies his Heilig Pfeil.
Path Control:
It is possible for Uryū to will his spirit arrows to track their targets mid-flight, causing them to become active threats even after they have been avoided. Theoretically, these attacks can follow an enemy forever until the projectile finds its mark, or is dispelled.
Attack Negation: The most common application of Uryū’s Heilig Pfeil when not used as a direct attack is to instead negate oncoming attacks. Uryū must submit an amount of spiritual energy equivalent to the oncoming attack in order for his arrow to successfully cancel out the attack.
Spiritual Awareness
As a Quincy, Uryū’s capacity to sense spiritual energy is incredibly keen, able to pick up on the presence of Hollows in an area long before others are aware that a Hollow has appeared. This includes knowing the direction in which a Hollow is located, allowing Uryū to act as a human compass towards Hollows. It is virtually impossible for a Hollow to escape Uryū’s awareness unless powerful external forces are at work.
[/list][/span][/div]Misc. Items
Hollow Bait
A common tool of the Quincy, used to draw Hollows in droves to its flat, round tablet once it is crushed. Uryū used these tools en masse during the Karakura incident, though has since refrained from doing so, given what came of it the last time he attempted to openly hunt Hollows in such a manner.
Seele Schneider
This Quincy technique is the only Quincy arrow that can act as a blade, though it is by no means a sword. The “arrow” acts like a chainsaw, moving at three million revolutions per minute. Not only is Seele Schneider capable of ripping through flesh and bone, it loosens the bonds between the subject and their Reishi. This is a part of Seele Schneider’s Anhäufer technique, which allows the blade to absorb the Reishi of the opponent’s attacks. Since a physical high-speed impact can be destroyed by a spiritual high-speed impact, the Seele Schneider can do more damage to someone physically strong when they physically attack than when using a spirit-based attack. This technique is even more powerful in arrow form, capable of defeating a former Espada in a single shot. Seele Schneider may also be used in conjunction with Gintō; the placement of five Seele Schneider implements in a pentagram-shaped arrangement generates a devastating explosion within its borders once activated.
Gintō
Uryū can use the spiritual energy stored in Gintō tubes to create similar effects to Kidō; Uryū can even use his own energy, rather than the energy stored in the silver tube. This is Uryū’s primary weapon of choice when he can’t use his Heilig Pfeil.
[/list][/span][/div]Quincy Cross
Uryū’s Quincy Cross was gifted to him first by his grandfather, a standard cross at the time. When he regained his powers under his father, his cross became a simple pentacle, bound within a pendant Uryū keeps stored under his sleeves.
Helig Bogen
Uryū’s Spiritual Weapon is a standard Helig Bogen, a light-colored bow roughly as tall as he is. As he has trained under his father, however, Uryū’s Helig Bogen has appeared less like a typical bow and more like a Quincy cross, an explicit manifestation of his training under Ryūken.

His eyes glossed over the text before him. In nearly an instant, he turned the page. He absorbed the new information. He turned the page. The ticking barely registered to the boy, only tuned into what mattered in the moment. The whispers of those around him were clear, though pointless just the same. He turned the page several more times over the course of this contemplation. The young man could practically feel the eyes of wholly unimpressive girls on him. He couldn’t get distracted.
In that moment, a far more pointed presence had made itself known, far across town. His eyes for the first time since arriving to home room rose, directed at the source of the disturbance, through the window facing the town proper. He wondered… would he arrive before he was even aware of what was going on?
He tapped his glasses firmly against the bridge of his nose. Naturally. It was only a matter of moments before he was out of the school - without anyone the least bit aware that he was gone, at that - and on his way to the scene. And then… there was naught but that unmistakable head of orange hair, and his garishly sized sword, standing smugly by a vanishing corpse. His entire morning plan faded into disgust on his until now perfectly assured face. “Tch… ”
