Background: Most religions assume that ancient gods predate mankind, this is not the case for the Aspects.
The legend says that, as humankind started to develop themselves from the basest needs from nature, they distanced themselves from meaning, it was this dearth, this collective anguish, that create the Aspects, masked, ethereal guardians that shaped the will of man by giving them direction. Drives such as passion, innovation, competition, curiosity, slowly, but steadily dotted the sky, helping humans in ways they saw fit, commencing the throes of civilization.
However, as more and more of these spirits were born, this harmony descended into chaos. As human interests started to collide, so did they started to wage war against one another, driven by alien ambitions. As such, the heartbroken Aspects distanced themselves from mankind, seeing that their interference ended up doing much more harm than good. The damage had been done, and humans were doomed to be fractured forever, a price to pay for the gift of a purposeful life.
The sorrow of the Aspects was so great, that it too spawned an Aspect of its own, the congealed personification of their desire to right their wrongs and guide mankind once again. This Aspect, known as Desire, exists for nothing but to fulfill the dreams of righting its progenitor's wrongs, despite having no knowledge of how to accomplish such tasks but to repeat their mistakes. In order to accomplish its purpose, Desire deceived its progenitors into baring their faces, and stole all their masks, taking them back to the human world to don the gifts that brought advancement and fulfillment to this once pointless existence. The mere presence of the Aspects brought mankind to war and madness, and this unbridled Desire now offers them their untapped power, heedless and uncaring of the consequences.
And when everyone gets what they want, the world will devolve into chaos
Appearance
Profile:
Description: Desire is a celestial aspect, representing ambition, its namesake. Its height seems to change depending on who they're communing with, but it always towers those who are present, usually at a height of 7 feet. Its appearance is of a slender, black creature with thin legs and limitless black arms, hidden below a large cowl that offers a window to the cosmos. Its bright, cyan stare is hidden behind a porcelain mask.
Abilities
Gear
The Wellspring of Civilization: Reminiscent of the time where the Aspects still held sway over the wandering humans, Desire is able to conjure the tools that brought them to where they stand today. Primitive hammers, axes, knives, bows and spears can be conjured to be wielded by its endless arms
Abilities:
Watching Aspect: Desire is an Aspect of Ambition, an entity that should not intervene in human matters. It is only fitting, however, that its own desires would allow them to circumvent these rules. Desire is largely heedless of the physical realm and its rules, able to freely wander unseen and uninterrupted. Desire's presence is awe-inspiring, but it can only be sensed by those she wills, as well as anyone wearing the Visages of Ambitions, or her Brand
Visages of Ambition: Wielding the masks of its progenitors, Desire is able to offer their power to mortal souls, giving them the faces of one of the Aspects of greatness. The masks are objects of pure magical energy, and are invisible to the untrained eye of observers. Humans blessed with one of the Visages perpetually wear them on the side of their head, and don their powers by shifting it to their own face to wear it properly. Wearing the Visage has a number of benefits, and an even direr number of consequences, developing through stages as it is worn for longer durations. The more advanced the stage is, the likelier it is for the magically attuned to notice the presence of a Visage. The stages of assimilation are as follows:
1. Intervention: A brand new wearer of the mask immediately sees its effects once its worn, and is blessed with mundane boons that relate to its original owner. The uninspired become creative, the meek become staunch, the spineless become zealous, the foolish become critical. Doning and removing the mask is not at all difficult, the wave of refreshment one feels is natural given the upliftment it dons to the bearer
2. Instrumentalization: After some time of using the mask, the wielder starts to attain supernatural abilities that further aid their ambitions, mostly in fairly practical ways, such as levitating light objects, supernatural enhancement of the senses, expedient regeneration, animal empathy, and others. Removing the mask becomes physically difficult, but not unpleasant.
3. Inclination: The next step causes the wearer's drive to intensify to the point of unhealthy obsession, and enhances their previous boons with more notable supernatural abilities, such as ethereal limbs, displacement, energy projection, matter creation, and more. At this point, the user can will the mask to be worn rather than physically doing so (though notably, they must still remove it manually). They also slowly feel the effects of withdrawal while not wearing it.
4. Instrospection: A moment of reflection occurs before the 5th stage, a brief stint of clarity that brings the wearer to the realization of all that they had done to further their goals. It is said that, in this brief moment, the wearer communes with the Desire, who is going to be deaf to all of their regrets. The 4th stage is irreversible, even if the wearer abstains, the mask will eventually don itself and fulfill the Aspect's design
5. Incarnation: The sheer eldritch strength within the mask eventually overwhelms and melds into the bearer, transforming them into a monstrous creature known as a Worldmaker. While they have largely different features, Worldmakers share the traits of ashen skin, great physical height, and varied abilities depending on which Aspect and which individual the mask belongs to. Worldmakers are fearsome, but can be vanquished as any common foe would, doing so causes the Aspect within the mask to lose its grip on its bearer, and let go of a now unconscious, but largely unharmed individual. The mask expels itself in a vulnerable physical form, and will eventually return to the Desire until it is contained
6. Indemnification: While the Desire still struggles to understand why mortalkind would wish to end a Worldmaker, their goal is fulfilled either way. As the once-bearer regains consciousness, they will have poor recollection of the events that led them to where they are, other than a distant, pleasant feeling that their life changed for the better. They retain all the experience they gained, as well as all of the benefits from the first two stages. This symbiotic relationship also strengthens the used Aspect, emboldening the next Worldmaker it spawns. Nothing stops the same mortal from wearing the aspect again, or even a different one, but the Desire is unlikely to see the act as necessary a second time.
Brand of Desire: The Desire is a creature of ambition, and thus, its weakness lies in her nature to reward ambition in all of its shapes and forms. Those that actively seek out the Desire are blessed with her brand, which lays invisible on the back of one of the wearer's hands, regardless of their intentions. This brand is shaped as the Desire's hollow mask, and allows them to be able to sense Desire, and most importantly, reach out to her in more tangible ways. This works both ways, however, and while the Aspect is not vindictive, it would be unwise to test her patience. The brand signals its user of the presence of the Desire, its eyesockets shining with blue light.
