CORE INFO
Name: Rory Castellon
Alias(es): The Half-Sized Soldier or The Child Soldier (Only used behind his back to avoid being beaten up)/ The Booty Hunter
Gender: Male
Age: 26 (Yes, really)
APPEARANCE
Picture:
Physical Traits: Rory does not look his age. His height really throughs people off as he stands and just under 5” tall. The youngest someone has guessed is 15, which did not end well for that person. Typically his build leads people to guess in the range of 18 and 19 as despite his height he is fairly well built. Still, he finds all of it highly offensive and will make that well known to those who assume wrong. He’s also somewhat pale in skin tone. His black hair is well kept normally, and his golden amber eyes shine with a cheerful excitement and eagerness most days. All this combined makes for a rather carefree, sweet, and all together nonthreatening and unassuming look. Don’t let this fool you though; he wields his weapon with deadly accuracy.
Clothes/Style: Rory is typically found in rather simple attire. Linen shirts and pants, typically in black. He has a steel chest plate, as well as steel knee guards, elbow guards, shoulder guards, and steel plated boots. He hasn’t been able to afford a full set of armor yet. What he does have has clearly seen quite a lot of action; covered in dents and slightly rusty. It could really use to be replaced.
PERSONALITY
Outer Persona: Rory is extremely playful and cheerful, as well as quite the flirt. He loves a man that… is a man… and is relatively attractive. He’ll go for just about anything as long as he’s within his age range. He often will agree to join parties with attractive men for minimum fee just to have a chance to shoot his shot; minimum fee basically being, “pay for my room and meals while we travel and we’re good as long as I can room with that guy.” Of course, if boundaries are set, he will always respect them. He isn’t one to push for things that clearly aren’t happening. He will, however, joke around quite a bit. All in all, he’s just a fun loving cheerful person.
Inner Persona: When within the right company, the façade can occasionally be broken. Internally Rory is a very scared and lonely person with a serious phobia of being alone and abandoned. The flirting is mostly an act used to give an excuse for being so cheap when joining parties. Really, he’s just constantly looking for a new place to belong, at least for a little while until he is no longer needed.
Core: All Rory every truly wanted was a place to belong. A permanent family. Someone, or even multiple people, to love and care for him in a way he never got to have. Not necessarily romantically, though that would absolutely be nice. He becomes extremely depressed and anxious when left entirely alone. This is why he pretends to be so flirty and attached to attractive men that he offers to work for minimum pay in exchange for rooming with them; he actually just hates being alone so much he doesn’t want to even sleep in a room by himself. More often than not, he never even actually tries anything at night and only ends up “doing things” if the other person makes the first move.
BACKGROUND
Summary: Rory grew up in an orphanage, and not a very nice one. He and the other children were constantly mistreated, underfed, and used for labor. He became rather violent, and practiced fighting quite often. Eventually he escaped and became a mercenary, but for him that it just wasn’t enough.
History: Who knows what happened to Rory’s dad? He never met him and has nothing to indicate he ever even existed aside from the fact that… well… he exists. He and his mother didn’t even use his surname. Maybe he died. Maybe he abandoned him. The only person who knew was his mother, but she refused to ever talk about it. His mother he only had around until he was about five years old. She was a kind woman. A farmer with the greatest green thumb around.
Unfortunately, the was barely enough to afford medicine for one person, let alone two. The Castellon family has had medical issues for generations. Since as far back as can be tracked, they always had a strangely weak immune system, making them extremely vulnerable to illness and disease. Rory and his mother were no exception. After he was born, Maya Castellon chose to use her earnings for his medicine instead of her own, as any mother would. This led to her death when Rory was around the age of five.
To add insult to injury, the orphanage that Rory ended up in was not exactly pleasant. The caretakers were extremely abusive and neglectful. The only reason he survived for so long there were the older kids going out and stealing food and medicine for the younger ones. All of the children were underfed, beaten, and used for labor. Rory, however, was raised by a woman who never took shit. That rubbed off on him quite a bit. He would often try and fight back, to no avail of course.
After four years, he finally managed to escape the orphanage, heading into the Undercity, and hiding out there. He spent about eight years bettering himself; training and self-teaching himself how to fight and hunt in order to survive the brutality of the Undercity while sneaking around and stealing medicine when needed. However, he quickly realized that being alone in the world was drastically worse than where he had been. Being alone with his thoughts left him with nothing but dread for the past and future. He missed his mother. He felt guilty for leaving the other children in the orphanage. He had no clue if or when he would die; and if he did, no one would know and no one would care. He would have nightmares constantly, resulting in him being hardly able to sleep most of the time. It was a miracle he managed to survive as long as he did in that life. He had always dreamed of going back and destroying the place in an attempt to free the other kids, but never ended up doing it as he was too scared of what would happened to them if he failed. About a month before his eighteenth birthday, he heard that it somehow caught on fire. There were no survivors as far as anyone could tell. The guilt haunts him to this day that he never went back to try and save the other children.
At eighteen he finally felt safe leaving the Undercity, being too old to be forced back into the orphanage. He tried many different jobs, but quickly learned he wasn’t very good at any of them. He never learned to form like his mother and didn’t have enough smarts or grace for most other things. He was clumsy, small, often confused for being too young and had to constantly provide proof of his age, which proved to be extremely difficult most of the time. They only things he was good for was fighting and hunting.
This in mind, he fell back to the only thing he could do and became a mercenary for gangs, as well as a bounty hunter. He traveled through Lantern quite a bit, fighting for a multitude of people and causes, and capturing many people for various reasons, both good and bad, over the years. Finally being able to earn his keep, it felt good to actually buy his medicine instead of stealing it. He made a name for himself as an extremely powerful and capable warrior, albeit still small and unassuming.
If there was ever a point where he was having a hard time finding a group to join, however, he found other ways of getting in with people. Flirting and using his body as a bargaining tool seemed to be a good way to get in with people, and it quickly became his go to as a means to avoid discussing his real reason for being so desperate to find a party to join. His phobia of being alone only got worse over the years, and he needed a way to avoid it at all cost.
Eventually, he met a Hunter and was able to sit and have a drink with him. Rory had known of the Hunters. Who hadn’t? They were the ones who kept everyone safe from the monsters. He knew of Essence and its many uses. However, he was unaware of one big plus that he hadn’t known. Essence had such a strong healing property that Hunters couldn’t even really die as long as they had enough of it. With that, he wouldn’t have to worry about paying for his medicine which had gotten increasingly more expensive over the years. If he became a Hunter, he could invest his earnings in other things that would be more beneficial to improving himself. That, and maybe… just maybe… if he became a Hunter, he could finally find a permanent place to belong within the Order.
