Side 5 Shoal Zone
A week had passed since Helios departed from Luna II with its new directive: To wade through the shoal zone that littered Side 5’s airspace and snuff out the remnant hiding there once and for all. The journey itself had, thus far, been uneventful but now that they were in the debris fields, the tension only continued to mount and for good reason: As far as their observation teams could see, Helios was surrounded by the debris of what used to be the old Side 5. If there was ever anyone who claimed the shoal zone of Side 5 would be cleared in a few years’ time, it was because they’d never actually seen it in person, let alone stepped inside it themselves. A direct result of the Battle of Loum, one of the largest fleet battles in human history, the shoal zone dwarfed all of Helios’ past assignments by a wide margin. Between the remains of decimated colonies and the hundreds of lost cruisers between the Federation and Zeon forces (mostly the former), it was a graveyard matched only by the Sea of Solomon. Navigating it was such a nightmare, the scenic route was genuinely preferable. It also made it a long known haven for pirates and the remnant. Certainly, there had been attempts in the past to clear the shoal zone but between other high-priority locations such as Konpei Island and A Bao Qu or the Delaz Uprising in ’83, it ultimately fell to the wayside. And despite being formed for the very purpose of eliminating the remnant, the Titans failed to make meaningful progress (and were arguably negligent) in the region before the ongoing war with the AEUG. With the imminent return of Axis, they were forced into taking immediate action whatever the cost. As things stood, that cost was two Hizacks and whatever personnel were harmed aboard the Hario after it struck a chain of wire-operated mines, the explosion tearing into its starboard engine block. But even though their commanding vessel was effectively dead in the water for the moment, they pushed ahead with the operation. As Captain Ayachi stressed, any further delay would result in the remnant slipping out of their net and leave them all holding the bag. Therefore, the Hario would remain behind with its Salamis-escort until repairs were completed while the brunt of the search would be performed by the Halia and Helios Corps, their respective vessels meticulously sweeping through the litter. What a brilliant start… Banis thought as he continued to observe the tactical readout of their current course. The Graf Spee was somewhat close at hand while the Halia itself and its own Salamis escorts crept forward from a different vector. The crux of the maneuver was that either detachment would force the remnant out into the open and neutralize them before they could escape the shoal zone. It was bad enough that there were still God knew how many mines still floating about but their manpower was cut-down near the onset. And that was after the Rhodes’ was forced to deploy half of its compliment to Kilimanjaro… “Status?”“There’s been a slow increase in particle density but we still have a solid signal from Flight One and the EWAC team they’re shadowing. Flight Two is still maintaining a perimeter in conjunction with the Graf Spee’s mobile suit teams. Will there be a change, sir?”“No, have them continue their patrol. Notify me if they come across something even slightly out of place, no matter how minor.”-- If there was any notion that the shoal zone of Side 5 was no different than the others dotting the Earth Sphere, the past few hours had assuredly put them to rest. Almost around the clock, the mobile suit teams of Helios were operating around the clock to both maintain a perimeter while providing escort for a recon team of EWAC Hizacks, the latter providing sharp eyes and ears so that they might catch the remnant slacking. As the Hizack Custom’s own mono-eye slid along its track, Ilse could tell they needed it. They had barely commenced the operation before they nearly lost the Hario by pure chance and no one was looking to become the second victim of a mine. And that was without the remnant actually coming down on them while they were separated. Honestly, the sooner they were out of this whatever-million-plus graveyard, the better. Flipping through the images from her camera feed, Ilse unconsciously gripped her controls tighter as she settled on the not-so-distant husk of one of Loum’s many colonies. The images and texts from the history books didn’t remotely compare to seeing it in person. The thought of the Federation and Principality obliterating the Side through collateral damage, to say nothing of her direct relation to someone who was there, it simply made her skin crawl. How could anyone live in this without losing it? Get it together, Ilse, she silently chastised to herself, turning her focus back to the task at hand. Whether or not she was alone in these jitters, she had to stay on point for whatever came their way. And at the minimum, she had to make sure the recon team hadn’t wandered off into a spot of trouble…which was quite the possibility as one of the EWAC Hizacks began probing further ahead of its compatriots and without a word to their escorts. Grumbling slightly, she oriented her machine towards her Flight lead’s and began flashing a message with its mono-eye to keep their silence. ++LIEUTENANT VOLKODAV. EWAC UNIT THREE TOO FAR. It must have been a hell like little else. The sheer scale of conflict and the loss of life here echoed in the silence, a testament to man's ability to visit destruction upon itself almost as if it was an offering to a thirsty god of war, demanding it's fill. It left Volkodav contemplative, putting into perspective just how little of the war she had seen, and how small her own hells had been when viewed from a macro lens. She might've drifted off in her distant and bitter awe the entire sortie, had the light of communication not flashed in her sensors.
She glanced at the formations spread out around her. It was too dangerous for any pilot to go alone, let alone an EWAC. With a sigh she flashed back an affirmative, to angling her suit to catch some of the other members of the wing. Missing a couple of it's number, but still plenty strong.

"Quite the sight, indeed..."
Rōken's observation could not have been more of an understatement, particularly for someone who had earned most of his stripes behind a desk. Witnessing the effects of war firsthand, in space, at this scale, was an experience that would leave even hardened veterans at a loss for words. And yet, the intelligence officer peered out of his viewport with an affable fascination. Because it was fascinating. They were wading through living, bloody history... history that could very well claim any of them from beyond the grave. It made for an equally fascinating environment for their business here.
Unfortunately, dreadfully, that business was proving to be rather dull. Worse, dear Alexis had decided to tighten his leash. He was to be in her company, and... what was his name? Lemon? No, no... Leyland. Yes. The poet of death. Certainly a pleasant conversationalist among the bores, though at the same time, Alexis would likely shut down any chatter. After the latest string of developments, Rōken knew that he ought to restrain himself for a time.
Thus, the dull business. With uncharacteristic radio silence, Rōken moved his Galbaldy Beta into position at the side of Alexis' Hizack Custom. There was no point in belaboring nor complicating the issue. All he could do for now, like the rest of them, was to play along.
Of course Miss Minthe had the good fortune to be sent with the alien. Hopefully she didn't get the wrong idea. Black sheep could be rather compelling.

Electricity. There was a natural buzz in the atmosphere as they glided through the shoal zone. Auguste knew that there was a grim nature to the area they were combing through currently, but there was also a sense of pride welling up inside of him as he viewed the outside through his sensors. This graveyard, it was a symbol of victory, in his eyes, there was something beautiful about this image. Many of the others probably saw this for a grim scar of war, but to Auguste this was a reminder of their power. Of what they could really do when they pushed back against the Spacenoids. After all, there was a reason the debris here was mainly Zeon. And that filled him with pride, pride of knowing that if he was lucky, he would be able to make his own mark on this graveyard.
That anticipation was like a small ember, ready to blossom into a glorious flame.
One week ago he had transferred over into the Helios Corps Flight Two and had already settled in to his new role. Whilst he believed that they had to secure Earth under control, he understood the importance of patrolling and clearing out these shoals. The AEUG were always going to be nothing but misdirected fools that did not understand the importance of asserting dominance, whilst the true disease that threatened to wipe out Earth hid like rats in the corners of the colonies. So, joining the Helios Corps was a very suitable assignment to him, obviously they required a firm hand to guide them in the right direction, a force that could show his peers what they could aspire to be. Many had often assumed him to be angling to make his way up the ranks, to play the politics. That was certainly not the case. All he cared about was ensuring that there was no weakness, even in his superiors. And if he found it out here, he would be sure to help them find their way.
His new teammates on Flight Two seemed adequate, if lacking in certain areas. Max seemed able, level headed and able to think things through, but he also seemed to be a bit naïve and too idealistic for his liking. Kara seemed vicious and cunning, but more arrogant than he could have accounted for. And finally there was Ha-yeon, she seemed to have a lot of promise and if anything, he could not understand why she lacked a promotion. His guess was he would see first hand in combat if she lacked the resolve to actually carry out the tasks that needed to be done. At least, that was his guess. If anything, he was glad he had not been assigned to Flight One, not after hearing about the personnel
His comms had been silent for most of the mission as he tailed the formation, watching from the rear with a furrowed brow, his eyes keeping an eye on all system diagnostics, keeping an eye out for any hostility arising any time soon. He readied himself for combat, whilst keeping himself at bay, his Barzam floating through with that uncanny silence that he himself was carrying, his usual loud and commanding presence seemingly pulled back into one of preparation. His mind was sharpened and he was not letting his mind wander, keeping his eye on the prize and carefully surveying his fellows, ensuring they were not in danger of engagement. The large man smirked, he could feel it. Something was coming, and he was dying for some action.

CPO Peri Minthe was on high alert, but she wasn't really feeling nervous. It was surreal, being in this graveyard. The evidence of Zeon's continued reign of carnage even after the colony drop. Though they'd failed to end more lives on Earth directly in this attack (just one colony drop had caused a never-ending list of problems that her father still had to deal with the repercussions of daily), the debris of Side 5 surrounding them echoed its own loss heavily still. Even more, the use of Comms was dangerous - they were in potential enemy territory. It would be easy to lose pursuers among the debris, but the recent loss of the Hario and suits not unlike her own had her particularly wary of mines. And more, it had her wondering: Why had this not been cleared out? Even if Earth came before all else, the slacking off of the Federation in this case had now made this forest of machines a risk in so many ways. They would be lucky to pick up anything on radar. If more fighting reached Earth because of the negligence of leadership in Space...
Her thoughts were cut off by Ilse and Volkodav's conversation. 'AFFIRMATIVE,' she flashed back to her flight leader, then turned to follow Ilse at a short distance. Far enough to give space should she need to forge an escape route, trying to keep an eye on a clear route back to position, but close enough to defend or pull them out of danger should it somehow reach them.

- Side 5 Shoal Zone - - Helios Corps Flight Two - - Alexandria-class Heavy Cruiser Rhodes Vicinity -More than anything else, it was fatigue that threatened to creep in on Ens. Ha-yeon Mok. Since Helios Corps arrived in the Side 5 shoals, the Rhodes had been on constant alert, its mobile suit complement constantly deployed, leaving Ha-yeon wishing for a standby rotation. Her Marasai remained in formation with those of flight leader Lt. Maximilian Epstein and Ltjg. Kara Hansen. Trailing not far behind was a Barzam that had been added to Flight Two while Helios Corps was at Luna II, piloted by the recent transfer Ltjg. Auguste de Mirabeau. All four maintained relative position near the Rhodes and the Tibe-class Heavy Cruiser Graf Spee as their compatriots foraged further ahead. In her years as a Titans officer, Ha-yeon had long since been disillusioned to the reality that strategic and tactical necessities were frequently in tension with political necessities. In this case, she couldn't help but suspect that the frantic tirelessness of this shoal sweep operation was the result of subordination to politics, but she couldn't begin to guess what. The Titans had had the AEUG on the back foot since August, what with the death of their suspected leader Blex Forer that month and the EF Assembly's decision to give the Titans nearly infinite latitude to do as they pleased. Since then, the Titans had been on a constant offensive against the enemy, with the AEUG conducting virtually no offensive actions since their nuclear attack on Jaburo. Sending the Helios Corps into the Side 5 shoals was no doubt part of high command's policy of going on the offensive, but as far as Ha-yeon knew, they had no reason to demand a punishing pace. The incongruity led Ha-yeon to believe that something else was going on, something that was forcing their hand in some way, and it was above her pay grade. Ha-yeon clenched her eyes shut and shook her head. "Here I am, letting my mind wander," she said aloud, if only to interrupt the constant unchanging hum of the cockpit. A shoal sweep was a dangerous mix of being both monotonous and extremely tense, making it all too easy for one to lose their mind a little, even (or especially?) when an enemy had not presented itself. She needed to do something, if only to prevent herself from dozing off. Using an AMBAC maneuver to rotate her Marasai's Y-axis position without using its maneuvering thrusters, Ha-yeon repositioned the mobile suit so its monoeye was facing Max's Marasai. At a 500 meter distance, Max's MS was closer than it would have been in open space, but still much too far away for Ha-yeon to use skintalk for communication. Staying too close together in a shoal environment was just begging to get the team wiped out in a single ambush strike. Even before the Marasai had finished rotating, Ha-yeon was already typing out a message: "I SHIFT UP 30 DEG". By inputting a simple command, the Marasai's computer translated the message to Morse, then instantly used the monoeye as an impromptu Morse lamp. The green eye came to life, then blinked on and off rapidly. The computer on Max's Marasai (and likely Kara's and Auguste's, if their views were unobstructed) would automatically interpret the blinks back into readable text and display it on his monitor. He would understand that Ha-yeon was reporting that she would shift her position to move "upward", relative to Max's point of view, a small but not insignificant distance. Having sent her message, Ha-yeon positioned her MS's left arm - which had a detachable shield mounted to the forearm - and the right-arm shoulder shield so that the brief firing of the chest verniers wasn't as visible from some directions. There was of course no way to completely conceal a thruster flare from all directions, so minimizing it was the best one could do. As her verniers fired for the maneuver, Ha-yeon was looking over her left shoulder toward Max's Marasai - the size of a little action figure in her monitor at that distance. She realized with a start that she had very nearly left her vernier firing for too long and rushed to kill it, then feathered one of the rear verniers for a dose of counterthrust. "Get your head in the game," she murmured to herself, "Can't afford to get distracted."

If the Rhodes was feeling the strain of constant vigilance in its sweep, the Graf Spee fared little better, its own crew running just as hard as the Rhodes’, if not harder. Though just as seasoned as their Titan counterparts in shoal operations, the Zeon cruiser had poor luck in recent encounters with the remnant and AEUG, often taking the lion’s share of combat damage. Now that they were within the notorious shoals of Side 5, avoiding a repeat performance was a priority for all onboard. “Sir, laser transmission from EWAC Unit three...They say there’s been concerning bursts in particle activity.” “Show me.” Captain Ansbach looked to the communications officer before nodding for him to continue. Soon enough, a tactical display of the shoal and Helios’ relative positions within it was on an overhead screen. Little had changed with Helios’ positions but the marked locations were certainly worthy of notice. The bursts were seemingly random, at times occurring within the immediate vicinity of the last before showing up in a different spot altogether. But when taken in relation to Helios as a whole… “Where was the strongest burst?”
“The strongest one was…here. Closest unit is Flight One of the Rhodes.” The Graf Spee’s captain eyed the encircled area of space, noting the cluster of instances on its outer edges. It had been weeks behind them at this point but the situation was beginning to resemble their incident at Side 2 with the remnant. They were fortunate enough to survive but the mobile armor’s destruction hadn’t been confirmed. If it were operational again… ”Get the Rhodes on the line immediately! And prepare for anti-mobile suit combat!”
-- ++AFFIRMATIVE.++
Retrieving a wayward scout, a task that was easier said than done. It wasn’t as simple as boosting towards the wandering EWAC unit and dragging it back into formation. The need to maintain radio-silence and minimizing her thrusters’ presence would make the process drawn out and nerve-wracking, the unfortunate consequence of not wanting to tip off the remnant to their presence until it was too late. The irony wasn’t lost on her either, the task force’s punishing pace quite fresh in her mind as well as so many others. Lightly keying her mobile suit’s verniers, Ilse reoriented the Hizack to face the direction of its EWAC counterpart before setting off, hopefully before it wandered into trouble. Not that the unit in question was entirely defenseless, at least, compared to some of the older models still in use with the Republic of Zeon. Much of its surveillance equipment was stored within the back-mounted radome, freeing up its hands for conventional armaments rather than the older handheld camera units. Not that it should be trying its luck in the first place, Ilse thought as she trailed behind the EWAC Zack. To their credit, the pilot at least had the foresight to not venture out into the relative open, instead gently probing through the clusters of debris towards whatever caught its eye in the first place. If only they used half of that care and diligence in monitoring their own surroundings... Putting more power into its thrusters to close the distance, the Hizack Custom cruised for several moments more behind the wayward scout, entirely unaware of its presence right up until a titanium hand clasped its shoulder. An unbecoming yelp sounded through the contact link, further proving the pilot’s tunnel vision. <<”You’re too far out, get back in formation.”>>
<<”Jesus Christ, gave me a damn heart attack…Not yet, I’ve been coming across some odd markings on some of the garbage out here and I can’t quite place it. Like this here…”>> The EWAC Zack pointed to an errant piece of colony wall and, sure enough, through all the accumulated wear and tear was some sort of diamond-shaped symbol. <<”I’ve also been getting sporadic interference from Minvosky Particles in this direction and…”>> <<”Sporadic how?”>>
<<”That’s the thing, it shows little bursts in one direction before doing the same thing in another. I haven’t seen anything like it. There’s no pattern to it either, just shows up in one location and then another…See, there it is again but it’s a bit closer this time around, stronger too. Whatever it is, it’s no ship…”>> The Zeon pilot fought back the urge to simply turn tail and blast back towards the formation without the scout but kept it bay. The list of non-battleship related mobile weapons with the ability to casually disperse Minvosky Particles was rather short and of those Ilse was familiar with, one was right next to her. The task force had made it a priority to avoid spreading them until the start of combat and if they were detecting them in bursts, that meant something was swimming in the shoals with them. They may’ve already been pinged without even realizing it… <<”We’re pulling back, now. Relay what you’ve found to the-“>> Ilse began before the beeping of an alarm cut her off, effectively confirming her fears. <<”Evade!”>> This time, she didn’t fight back the urge to vacate the EWAC unit’s hideaway, the Hizack Custom rocketing out from the debris and without a moment to spare, a single focused mega particle blast ripping into her previous position. The EWAC Zack, too slow in its response, was all but turned into a molten husk, the intense heat warping the titanium armor into a barely recognizable shape. Hoping to get eyes on whatever had come for them so aggressively, Ilse hurriedly flicked her monitor feeds of the shoals. Thankfully, the wait was a short one, as the Hizack Custom’s advanced sensors did the heavy-lifting of sorting through the sea of ship and colony debris as to identify the flickering light numerous mobile suit thrusters as had those of the other Hizack Custom and remaining EWAC units. And the brightest one didn’t belong to a mobile suit at all. Rather, a mobile weapon that had would've been familiar to those who served since Helios' creation. It had the look of a wounded beast, its armor scarred by battle and further modifications to its frame but it was still unmistakable. After all, it was this same weapon that nearly brought down Helios by its lonesome were it not for the timely intervention and dogged efforts of their more seasoned pilots. <<”Lieutenant Volkodav, it’s here!”>>
-- “Confirmed, Captain. Incoming contacts, count at least twelve! Bigro-type mobile armor is also believed to be present!” Again they get the drop on us, Banis thought as more and more blips began to generate on the bridge’s tactical display, the numbers growing to match and potentially exceed those deployed by Helios. If there was any saving grace to the situation, it was that Helios as a whole had both gained more experience and been resupplied appropriately to deal with ever more dangerous threats. “Anti-air and observation, focus! They can come from any direction in these shoals so make sure you don’t miss them. Have Flights One and Two intercept the enemy, EWAC units are to fall back!”
Even as Banis gave out his orders, the scope of the threat to Helios would quickly become apparent to its pilots, the approaching hostiles taking up an organized formation to assault the divided mobile suit teams. On the farthest flanks, a mix of Zaku and Rick Dom-type mobile suits darted in and out of cover as they closed the distance with the more aggressive Dom pilots taking early shots with their bazookas at Flight Two, a shell sailing right toward Ha-Yeon’s Marasai and the nearby EWAC Zack. But while Flight Two was still near the Rhodes and not entirely in range of the incoming remnant, Flight One was thrown into the fire almost immediately. Not only had the mobile armor already taken a shot at Ilse, blowing apart an EWAC Zack in the process, but the accompanying mobile suits were quick to engage as well. A pair of Dra-C blew past Ilse and Peri’s Hizack Customs for an attack run on Roken’s Galbaldy while a modified Zaku fired several beams at Leyland’s own. Lastly, an Act Zaku and modified Rick Dom took several shots at Peri and Volkodav both, keen to prevent Flight One from coordinating effectively. In moments, the tension from meandering through the remnants backyard had been turned on its head as the hunters became the hunted. And if the growing number of lights both near and far were anything to go by, they were far closer to their objective than they realized. Now, they only had to live long enough to complete it. ((Map and estimated positions of Helios is here!)) The Garden Gazette With the sudden arrival of the Zeon remnant comes the commencement of hostilities! Helios Corps as a whole will have their work cut out for them this time as, not only are they in an unfamiliar environment, but their attackers have made the first move!
Above all else, Flight One is in the thick of things and have to hurry before they’re overwhelmed. The Bigro-type mobile armor has made its grand return after a two month (in-game) absence and has drawn first blood against Helios, vaporizing a careless EWAC Zack with its mega particle cannon. And while it prepares to move onto Ilse and Peri, its wingmen have quickly charged in to keep them off balance. A pair of Dra-C units have gone right for Roken with their heavy gatling guns unleashing a hail of bullets while a modified Zaku has opened fire with its beam rifle at Leyland’s unit. An Act Zaku and modified Rick Dom have done the same, opening fire with their beam rifle and bazookas respectively at Peri and Volkodav’s mobile suits.
And, while Flight One has fallen into a grinder, Flight Two has found itself faced with its own immediate challenges. A variety of Zeon-type machines have come rushing through the shoal, their bazookas, machine guns and rifles plugging away at the four-man strong team with a Rick Dom II and Stutzer-type Rick Dom gunning for the Ha-yeon and the EWAC Zack in particular. Not that the others would be excluded of course, there’s still quite a number still on the way!

She wanted nothing more than to kick her suit into high gear and engage the mobile armour, the blood instantly running hot at mere thought of clashing with it once more and exacting a revenge of sorts against it. Personally Volkodav cared little for the pilot that had perished in their last clash; she had known him for so little time he had failed to make an impact on her. But they were still a member of her unit, and that to her demanded a price. But she was in command here, she had to keep a level head and give orders before getting stuck in.
"All units keep distance from that armour and focus on its support! Minthe, Mistral, fall back and don't give it any reason to chase you. All EWACS move behind us and provide support."
She boosted up, or what passed for up in space, and started taking potshots at the armour with her rifle. "Up here, focus on me. Let your buddies handle them, I'm right here."

- Alexandria-class Heavy Cruiser Rhodes Vicinity - - Flight Two -
It wasn't AEUG that emerged, guns blazing, from the shoals, but apparent Zeon holdouts in modified older mobile suits. Of Flight Two, Ha-yeon's Marasai was situated furthest from the Rhodes's position and not far from one of the reconnaissance Hizacks, so she soon found herself taking enemy fire.
MS-09? RICKDOM? MS-09R2 RICKDOM
Ha-yeon's earlier grogginess instantly dissolved, her mind jolting into sudden focus as her cockpit display generated a flurry of reticles to track and identify the incoming MS; a pair of Rick Dom-types them had clearly taken point and started shooting first, taking aim at Ha-yeon and the EWAC Zack.
"Six to ten contacts incoming," Ha-yeon had to estimate their number on the fly while reporting to her team, not having the luxury of time to count out the reticles on her monitor while hitting evasive maneuvers, "They're already in firing range, Rick Doms and Zaku-types." Training and experience had left their mark: Ha-yeon's utterance was clipped and professional, betraying no sign of her being startled or otherwise in a compromised emotional state.
In any case, it was a complete ambush, with the enemy coming into firing range almost immediately after revealing themselves. Ha-yeon pushed her MS into a tight rolling evasive, which would look like she was spiralling "downward" from a viewer positioned on the Rhodes's bridge (although her Marasai was likely not visible from there), and creating distance away from the Rick Doms without drawing them toward the Rhodes, all the while squeezing off shots from the Marasai's beam rifle, primarily at the slightly closer Rick Dom II that was on the right side of her view. She had to break up the enemy's momentum and formation and keep them at bay to afford Flight Two, and their accompanying EWAC Zack, the time and space to form up under Max's direction and shift the tempo of the action to their own favor.

Knuckles whitening.
Eyes narrowing.
That sudden burst of action surged through their ranks and he saw in real time as their enemy made themselves known. Their arrival was like a punch in space, the energy shifted drammatically, Auguste could only let himself spread a bright grin across his face as he watched those troops spill in to their range. Zeon. Their shoal was filled with light and hostiles as the ghosts of a disgraced faction made their appearance known.
Pushing forward, he leaned forward in his seat as he squeezed the controls, sliding away from the cruiser, to get some space away from the clear target and to avoid himself being a sitting duck. Teeth gritting, his eyes locked onto his display, not even taking a moment tow atch his own motions as he steered himself forward, squeezing his trigger as he let out a few stray shots towards their attackers, gracing these Spacenoid strays with a hail of vulcan pods, before taking position behind Montbairn, gliding his way past debris as it bumped and scraped past his Mobile suit.
"Don't let that piece of scrap get through us! These comet hugging bastards wanna fill a graveyard? Lets give them a hand!"

And just like that, the EWAC, along with the person inside it, was reduced to atoms. And just like that, their enemy revealed themselves. Not only that, but a familiar thing from one of Rōken's favorite reports. He was among those most immediately in danger. The thought made him smile.
Rōken moved immediately to action. His Galbaldy was already settled into a firing position, seeming as if he had been expecting something like this to happen. His reflexes were simply that keen. He took a couple aimed shots with his beam rifle at the Dra-C's before skirting for debris cover, retreating backwards and to the left with a few well-timed engine bursts. His machine moved gracefully for a Galbaldy, owed to his precision over the controls. His fingers moved cleanly, calmly, like he was doing a desk routine.
Amid these motions, Rōken flicked his communicator to the Flight's secure channel for a brief respite, then flicked it off after he had said his piece. "Two buzzards, at my two o'clock."

Peri knew something was wrong as soon as Ilse came shooting out. One second later, where she had been was a twisted mass of melted metal, no possible hope for the pilot inside. She immediately changed her direction and started moving backwards, spurred on by her flight member's clear switch into evasive action. Before she can ask what the hell made that shot, the thing Ilse had only referred to as "It" appeared. "What the hell is that?" she asked, a slip as she takes in the immediate threats - including the ones taking shots at her, the one coming directly at her, and the thing hovering that had already vaporized one of their own. Still, no bogey meant no reason to not get the hell out of there.
Lt. Volk's voice comes through with commands, and she automatically nods, steeling herself. Can't draw attention, or that thing would surely get another casualty. She clocked the shots being aimed at her. "ебать." she muttered under her breath, drawing her beam saber. Before she could rush in, she saw Volk trying to draw the largest threat's attention, and knew she needed to get out of the space between them. Cutting hard to the left and back, she took up a defensive position with her saber diagonal in front of her, aiming to slice through any threat ballsy enough to get close. If she got too aggressive, she'd draw attention. Just had to hold out until she was in a more tactically advantageous position...

Ilse barely registered the Russian’s orders as she threw her Hizack into a hard bank, its thrusters at full output in an attempt to put to gain some distance between herself and the mobile armor. Even so, the mobile armor’s image only seemed to get bigger on her monitor, the debris an afterthought as it cruised after her through the shoal. As the survivor of its initial barrage and out alone, it figured she would be first on the chopping block and it was clear the war machine wasn’t looking to draw things out as several ports along the armor’s ‘nose’ opened fire, several beams striking out and into the shoal. The initial spray was noticeably inaccurate as several of its beams sailed further from their target and, from her memory of the last encounter, the volume of fire was less as well. A likely consequence of the damage incurred a month ago, Ilse realized, but it was still capable of laying waste to her or anyone else caught unawares. Indeed, what started as an unfocused barrage began to be more focused as several beams split apart what used to be part of a Salamis’ bridge and got uncomfortably close to Ilse’s flight path. The only thing that prevented the next set from hitting home was an errant shot glancing off of its portside armor, ripping its attention from Ilse’s Hizack to Volkadov’s own, the hulking mobile weapon breaking off to engage its new target. It wouldn’t be alone either as a modified Zaku had begun opening fire as well, eager to support the mobile armor against the Russian lieutenant. Though the Lieutenant’s actions brought some much needed breathing room for Ilse, it came and went as she quickly became embroiled in combat much like the rest of Helios. Her initial course (and Volkadov’s own intervention) took her away from the mobile armor’s grasp but it also led her into flight path alongside one of the Zaku-types belonging to the remnant, its pilot unaware of her presence as they charged after the retreating Peri. “Got you…” Angling the Hizack’s shoulder-mounted shield, Ilse prepped herself for an incoming tackle just as the Zaku pilot finally realized their new companion, albeit too late to properly respond. In a smooth motion, the Hizack Custom crashed its shield right into the Act Zaku’s gun arm, sending it off-course and into a disoriented spin. <<”Peri, you’ve got another one coming in!”>>
Sure enough, even as the Act Zaku was knocked off its attack run, a modified Rick Dom already came rushing out through the shoals to plug the hole left by its interrupted ally, its mono-eye was focused entirely on Peri’s Hizack Custom. Comparatively, it was a much bigger threat just from the level of ordinance it was beginning to dispense, one of its missile pods unleashing its entire payload of five missiles before firing off a shot of its bazooka for good measure. Not far off, Roken was just as much under siege as Peri, as the pair of Dra-C attempted to play to their strengths as hit and run interceptors. Though Roken managed to clip one of the offending, glorified space fighters by ripping off its shield armor in one shot, they soon split off from another as the Galbaldy sought cover within the debris patches. Their plan became clear as the shield-deprived unit rounded one side of Roken’s cover and began opening fire with its arm-mounted gatling gun while the other came from the other, igniting its own shield-mounted beam saber as it rapidly closed in for a fly-by slash. By now, Helios had more than enough experience in going head to head with the remnant. Enough so that in such a high stakes engagement, certain individuals had yet to take meaningful action whether it be much needed support fire or otherwise direct engagement with the remnant. JG Montebairn was such an individual, having carefully took up a perch upon a wayward chunk of mineral rock. He was seemingly content to merely observe Helios as a whole through his monitors, taking the odd shot towards the remnant to maintain appearances. The Man from Jupiter had taken a personal interest in Helios Corps and saw fit to monitor their exploits through a proxy, the wary eyes of loyalists be damned. The Lieutenant personally thought little of them after their initial meeting but Scirocco’s vision was his own, Montebairn need only serve faithfully and ensure its success. My input may hardly be necessary, he mused as his monitors slowly shifted from Flight One’s movements to that of Flight Two, the smaller detachment rapidly forming up to meet the horde ahead of them. <<”Flight Two, pair off and keep your partner close, don’t give these pirates an easy kill by going it alone. Hansen, you’re with me. Mok, stick with Mirabeau and keep our flank covered. Go!”>>
Whether or not a formal acknowledgment of Epstein’s command was given, the Marasai helmed by Hansen was already soaring ahead much to Epstein’s frustration. In one ear and right out the other…He hoped that Hansen’s recent brush with death would temper her aggression but it seemed to have the opposite effect, the Lieutenant diving into a firefight before he could link up with her. A more direct chastisement would be necessary, he realized. <<”What did I just say, Hansen!?”>>
Though he couldn’t see her expression, Max could hear the scoff in her response. <<”Backwater spacemen couldn’t touch me even if I was blindfolded. Just watch…”>> A single Dra-C tested its luck by attempting to dart through the gap between the two Marasai only to be met with resounding failure, the blue interceptor getting caught at the waist by a swing of Hansen’s saber and sent spiraling off into the shoal. An impressive enough maneuver in its own right but one that couldn’t be praised in the moment as the pair were beset by a supporting Dom-type and Act Zaku. The light of the Dra-C’s demise had barely faded as others made their own push on the Rhodes, egged on by the actions of Ha-yeon’s fire. To their credit, and despite its age, the Rick Dom II was already proving to be a more wary opponent as it weaved through out the shoal, beams sailing into rock as it kept to what meager cover it could. Its movement brought it in and out of sight but when it did pop up, it was clear that the distance was closing. On its next reveal, had gone on the attack, as a bright and disorienting flash of light sprayed out from its torso. A blinding light for those unprepared and an excellent distraction for a single handheld-sturm faust rocket, capable of obliterating even modern mobile suits on a direct hit. But while the Rick Dom II had carefully maneuvered in an attempt to trap Ha-yeon, its modified counterpart threw caution to the wind entirely. Its bazooka muzzle flashed twice as it fired towards the single Barzam amongst Helios, helmed by the newcomer Auguste. And unlike the one that had gone after Peri, the Dom’s pilot had opened fire with both of its missile launchers, a total of ten now streaking towards the Barzam. ((Map and estimated positions of Helios is here!)) ((The Palau Pages)) Combat between Helios and the Zeon Remnant is beginning to heat up!
Flight One, ever the magnet for trouble, has started to regroup thanks to the quick intervention of Volkadav. The temporary lead of Helios (because Julian is on Earth you see) and usual flight lead of Flight One has interjected herself between the enemy mobile armor and Ilse, grabbing its attention so the latter could retreat, even managing some damage to its already worn-down armor. However, now she’s its sole focus and is soon to be caught between the armor and an approaching Zaku-type.
Ilse, meanwhile, has lent her aid to Peri by tackling an Act Zaku off of its attack run, leaving Peri to fend off a modified Rick Dom. Though it has opened fire with its bazooka and missile launcher, one opponent is far better than two in such a chaotic environment. Roken wouldn’t have the same kind of aid however as, though he managed to clip one of the Dra-Cs gunning for him, they still bounced back in an attempt to pincer him with the pair’s wounded pair charging in for a fly-by slash of its beam saber. And not to be forgotten, both Ruelle and Leyland are providing support fire from a safe distance although the former appears more preoccupied with observing the unit as a whole than providing meaningful assistance.
Flight Two, conversely, had less on their plate but stonewalled the remnant regardless. Ever reliable Epstein has rallied his flight and given orders appropriately though not without Kara taking a loose interpretation of them, quickly cutting down a Dra-C before they fully linked up. And not far off, both Ha-Yeon and Auguste were fired upon by a pair of Dom-types and their deadly ordinance. Notably, the former of the pair was faced by the Rick Dom II’s technically harmless but still blinding beam-spray gun and sturm faust rocket while the latter was in danger of getting struck by bazooka and missile fire.
There’s a lot of enemies but things seem to be contained for now!

So
This was how things were going to go huh?
Mirabaeu gritted his teeth together, feeling his breaths heavy against his visor, adrenaline pumping through him like he was about to experience re-entry. His eas were graced by the beautiful orchestra of the battlefield, fif it wasn't for the warnings flashing inside his cockpit, it was the sounds of explosions and gunfire that penetrated the hull of his MS, the cacophony in the void of space raging on in a horrendous display of firepower. And they said no one can hear you scream in this abyss.
After the pulse of his initial assault quickly died away, he knew a retalliation would be quick from these Zeke cowards, so his narrowed bulging eyes weren;t filled with too much shock when he was met with the actions of the great weapons of the Remnants, or so they said. Backwater rats with their tails between their legs weren't exactly cut out to make the best weapons of masss destruction. Despite his position, all he could think of was how pathetic this little ambush was. Part of him wished he could have seen them in their full potential, but right now, all he saw before him were the remains of a deplorable empire.
And he was glad to enlighten them on his thoughts.
FLASH
FLASH
His body tensed. Here it came. Ten missiles soaring through the lightless oasis towards him. His body jerked suddenly. Quick. Retaliate. Brace. FOCUS. His options cut through his mind like a knife as he reacted on instinct.
"Mok! Don't let him shock you! I've got your flank hold steady!" He bellowed down the comms as his body veered with his suit, taking evasive action to at least try and dodge one of these rockets, his machine quickly reaching out to the debris he was gliding through before and moving to collect as much as he could muster. After he was satisfied with what he had/what he could grab, the Barzam jerked suddenly, jostling Auguste as it launched, both arms lurching forward and launching as much spare debris as it could like some make-shift shrapnel towards the rockets as he squeezed down on his controls.
The Debris flung forward, aiming to at least set off the missiles, he took evasice action, gliding his suit to and fro as he let out short controlled bursts of his Vulcans towards the missiles and beared down, bracing himself for any impact. With bated breath he beared down, waiting for the rockets to make impact. And the moment it did....
SWSH SWSH
He activated both beam sabers, and prepared to accelerate.

The loss of velocity that came with having to change direction suddenly had its consequences when a rusty old model from the previous war managed to close the distance on Ha-yeon's Marasai. Seeing the Rick Dom abruptly grow large on her 360-degree monitor drew out a small gasp of surprise from Ha-yeon as she tried to re-center her beam rifle's aim on her enemy; threat detectors were blaring wildly as her monitor display littered itself with urgent red indicators.
Auguste's voice rang through the comms, "Mok! Don't let him-" The warning didn't matter. There was no evading the blinding light of the Rick Dom's torso-mounted scattering particle gun, and Ha-yeon found herself involuntarily letting out a short, sharp shriek and clenching her eyelids shut as her cockpit was instantly flooded with searing light.
Experiencing a blinding flash attack like this was, of course, included in training for a mobile suit pilot. Ha-yeon herself had had to do mock battles at Izmir and Confeito that included taking a hit from a blinding attack; she'd also been blinded by a Rick Dom when she was serving with a Side 3 inspection unit. Experience did nothing to prevent that initial fraction-of-a-second panic that comes with losing eyesight, though, and Ha-yeon was only human.
Nevertheless, training and experience reasserted themselves. "I'm blinded, JG Auguste!" Ha-yeon called out to her partner as she blinked hard to try readjusting her eyesight. In that same moment, she allowed muscle memory to guide her hands around the cockpit. The enemy would no doubt launch a follow-up attack as soon as possible, and Ha-yeon needed to interrupt that as best as she could while her eyesight recovered. She squeezed down the triggers for the Marasai's head-mounted vulcan guns while twisting the torso around so the shoulder shield should have been, in her estimation, facing the offending Rick Dom. Throughout these actions, Ha-yeon still had her mobile suit accelerating, trying to build up the velocity to increase the space between her and her attacker.
