Name: Rand Tyvin
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Principality of Zeon, Side 3
Faction: Axis
Rank: Lieutenant Junior Grade
Appearance:
Rand is a clean-cut man, shaven of most of his facial features. His other features are sharp and atypical, roughly shaped by his brush with war over the past several years of his life, and not necessarily the better for it. What softness there might have been to Rand's features, and his general physical demeanor, is significantly diminished, replaced by an increasingly stoic exterior. Rand keeps an air of confidence and pride about him that at times feels familial and bears close camaraderie, though at other times comes off as a distant, thousand-yard stare. Rand's black hair, though spiky, is generally combed downwards, giving him rows of unkempt bangs that he takes in stride. Not only is Rand particularly built as a Zeon pilot, but much of his character is exuded in his spirit and stubborn will.
Clothing-wise, Rand tends to dress in relatively dark colors, from light-gray to dirty-brown, typically long-sleeve shirts with dusty jeans when not in uniform. He doesn't seem to take an interest in customizing his outfits as some of his peers do, either out of a disinterest in such a hobby or choosing not to risk breaking dress code.
Personality: Rand is a passionate and headstrong individual, though over the past few years he has grown to check himself in this regard, not nearly being as outspoken or sociable as he necessarily used to be. This is also the case with authority figures for the most part, though if he is led to believe to doubt an order for one reason or another, he may think twice about immediately obliging it; outright insubordination, however, is usually the last thing on his mind, no matter how dire the scenario. In spite of the bitter notions placed in him by the One Year War and subsequent conflicts, Rand is highly individualistic, and continues to want to prove himself. Whether truly responsible or not, Rand holds a deep regret for the losses of personal comrades throughout the years, as well as the notion that he needs to live up to the ideals of his late father going forward.
Though Rand can make it difficult for others to approach him, he is (typically) not outwardly belligerent or hostile. If anything, he appreciates and even needs the company of others, now more than ever before. In spite of what Rand has gone through as a Zeon mobile suit pilot, good or bad, he continues to support their cause with every belief in his heart. He has little to no tolerance for deviations from this mindset, and will not hesitate to alienate those around him that do not share the same sentiment for the Axis. Ultimately, Rand is a loyal and trusting soldier, and can be counted on to be there for his fellow spacenoids.
History:
Rand’s family was plagued at his birth, the final straw in his mother’s worsening condition that left her body cold as he was plucked from her womb, and deposited into the distraught arms of his father. The child instantly received the man’s scorn, and continued to receive it for the rest of his life, the man a bitter and reproachful individual that was not one to forgive nor forget, let alone when it was towards the little wretch that tore his beloved from him. As he grew up, Rand adopted his father’s brooding sentiment as a result of his distant upbringing, relying more on himself and the spirit of Zeon that he grew up under on Side 3.
Despite the animosity that his father held toward him, Rand was constantly opposed by his father on endeavors he wanted to pursue, from outstanding academic rigor to pursuing a career on colonies away from his father. While Rand could not understand why his distant and aggravating father wanted to keep him stuck on Side 3, his father was still overwhelmed with grief and a developed abandonment complex, with his son as his last link to humanity. By far, though, the greatest grievance was when he denied Rand the opportunity to enlist as a Mobile Suit pilot in the raging war against the Earth Federation. This was when Rand’s juvenile spirit finally snapped, and in an ultimate act of defiance, ran off to join the Zeon forces in spite of what his father seemed to think was best for him.
Rand’s time as an ensign, however, was anything but pleasant, or even motivating, let alone for one so passionate for his cause. His frequent quarrels with superior officers and fights with his peers that he was easily provoked into set Rand on the bad side of many officers, eventually culminating in him being sent to the North American frontier. Where many soldiers would be disheartened or even despaired by such an assignment, Rand was all too happy to oblige such an order. It would be a new opportunity of sorts for him, in which he could prove his worth to Zeon, and more importantly to himself, his self-esteem not faring for the better until then.
The months of combat that followed was a brutally enlightening experience for Rand as he was exposed directly to what war with the Federation was truly like as he stepped into the shoes of his Zaku with the Gorgon Team against the 232nd Federation Corps. As hard as Rand tried to adapt and do the right things in critical split-second situations, he and the rest of the Gorgons were slowly pushed back to Zeon's California stronghold, to the point where they were forced to abandon even that, and take to space. That image, that moment of Walter Clarkson staying behind... Rand was unable to take his mind off of that haunting memory for several weeks, then months afterward. From time to time, Walter's moment, and many like them up to then, resurge in Rand's psyche.
And yet, the war was not yet over, and as stricken with overwhelming grief as Rand and the other Gorgons had become after California, they were forced to fight on still, now in the cold vacuum of space. These orbital skirmishes led to the Battle of Solomon, which ultimately turned into another fluke for Zeon, the effort of the Gorgons and many other mobile suit teams that toiled and suffered amounting to little with the Federation's use of the Solar Ray. But, as bleak as the situation continued to become for the Zeonic cause, Rand couldn't give up. None of them could. Not even when A Baoa Qu doomed their cause, and sent the Principality reeling from near-total defeat. The Gorgons (what was left of them) had survived the war
Finally having a chance to recuperate from the traumatic year he and his comrades had just gone through, Rand took some time off to come to terms with the man that that war had turned him into, and how it had changed him, for better and for worse, though seemingly more of the latter. He thought to visit his father back on Side 3, but residual juvenile bitterness dissuaded him from that, far too confident that he had outgrown his old man. He was perfectly capable of working through this on his own, to find his own way. But even then, Rand could not stop thinking of Zeon, and that his people were far from finished with their movement. He refused to accept surrender to the Federation, to their ideals. When the call came from the Black Demon himself for a chance to strike back at the Federation in a serious way, Rand was among the first to answer.
Rand didn't have much opportunity to refamiliarize himself with his comrades in a military setting again, and less still when he realized what this "Operation Stardust" entailed, and the ramifications that it would have on Earth proper. Although Rand had never had strong feelings for Earth itself, having grown up on Side 3 for most of his life, he kept a great deal of reluctance about this mission and the sheer scale of its intended destruction to himself, never mind the tremendous loss of life. He swallowed his morals in that moment and knew that if Zeon was to survive, then the Federation needed to be taught a lesson of what the One-Year War would cost them. Though this too cost the Gorgons still, as the aftermath of Operation Stardust quickly turned against them, and Captain Waltz stayed behind for the sake of his team. Rand wondered if he would ever be capable of that kind of courage or leadership, but there wouldn't be time for him to consider any of that if he didn't seize the opportunity the Captain had created to escape.
The Gorgons promptly disbanded afterward, and Rand finally decided to return to Side 3. The loss of Captain Waltz made him realize just how precious your loved ones were, whether they were fellow soldiers or your neglected family. Rand came home to a somber report informing him that his father had passed in his sleep, approximately around the time that he had rendezvoused with the Gorgons for Operation Stardust. To say that guilt weighed heavily on Rand's mind that day, and every day thereafter, would not be an understatement. Through some unknown force, Rand managed to keep going, and more importantly, held onto his pride for Zeon. Rand has since gone back to active duty, and ready, with those who survived the One Year War and those lucky enough to have never been a part of it, to assert the Principality against the tyranny of the Federation, and the Titan scum that now lead them.
