Name:
Catherine Blake
Age:
28
Gender:
Female
History:
Catherine does not remember much of her early years, though she does know that at one point or another, she was left behind by her family, and taken in by foster parents out of an orphanage in New York. Granted, she didn't learn any of this until she was in her teenage years, and after pressing her (step)parents, they came clean, much to her dismay. Catherine had been relatively happy to that point, and had lived a more or less peaceful life until she learned that she had never met or known her real parents. Her teenage years, unsurprisingly, were much more volatile, and Catherine grew increasingly spiteful towards her "parents". She became obsessed with learning more about where she really came from, and genealogy overall.
Catherine's stepparents did not entirely know what to make of their daughter's behavior, or what it would lead to, though their foremost desire was to make her happy, and so for the most part they allowed her to pursue these things as vigorously as she did. Though it took an arduous amount of effort, Catherine eventually began to uncover the kind of people that her parents were, even if she could not learn who they were. The critical realization came when a series of bright, red arcane sigils appeared on Catherine's forearm, and the rock that she had skipped along the bay shot out like a cannon ball and came up against a far-off cruise ship coming into the New York harbor. She looked at her arm, the luminescent markings still there, no trick of her imagination, nor the stone that he had throne farther than any human ought to ever be capable of. Not long after, she was contacted by ominous individuals who introduced themselves as representatives of a group known as "Clock Tower".
Through arrangements already established under pretenses Catherine still doesn't know the full details of, she was admitted to this prestigious mage school across the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of London. Catherine knew that her adoptive parents knew nothing of this world and all its bizarre wonders, leading her to believe that it was her parents, whomever they may be and wherever they were now, who had done this for her. And yet, this did little to change her opinion of them, the girl still not forgiving them for abandoning them, and almost angrier at them for only now deciding to take notice of her now that, through her own efforts, had learned her true heritage.
Catherine had more or less kept to herself in traditional schooling back in America, a habit that did not change much as she began to settle in at the Clock Tower academy. She did not make very many friends, nor did she care for friends or company in general. As a whole she preferred to be alone, wanting to focus on her academic pursuits and coming into her own as a Mage. Catherine's interests gravitated toward her first production of what she understood to have been Magecraft, and expanding upon the technique. Though Magi as a whole seemed to frown upon modern weapons and conventional firearms, Catherine clung to such things, if only in part. They were particularly effective in conjunction with her kinematic Magecraft, able to accelerate projectiles to nigh-superhuman forces, as well as to bring tremendous speeds to negligible movement.
Though no prodigy by any means, Catherine attracted the attention of many higher-up Magi within the academy, as well as within the larger Mage's Association. There were numerous superiors who wished to take her under their wing, remove her from the academic environment where many felt that a woman of her talents were sorely wasted. Ever prickly towards authority figures, Catherine was wary to trust any of them, becoming more withdrawn as a result. The impact of the Fourth Grail War and developments thereafter made Catherine more paranoid still, growing resentful towards many sections of the Association. She viewed the catastrophe in Fuyuki as a gross failure of the Church and the Association in equal measure to contain the crisis, both institutions woefully bereft of competent leadership. Catherine had no intention of abandoning Magecraft for service in the Church. She knew by now that being a Mage was what she was meant to do. Though given how the Clock Tower was handling itself in recent years, and increasingly worryingly incidents transpiring around the globe, Catherine felt obligated to do something to set things aright.
And so Catherine waited for her Command Seal to appear. So many of her peers had already been pulled into this new Grail War. It was only a matter of time for her to be brought into this inexplicable crisis. She threw herself into researching history and myth, eager to discover who she could find catalysts for. It was a rigorous process, though one that she was able to pursue amid her peers coming to terms with the new state of affairs. She studied, researched, and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
And waited...
...
The existential dread was beginning to set in.
Personality:
Catherine is an immutably committed individual, hard-set in her ways and scarce to change her mind on anything. Once she has set herself on something, she will see it through to the end, and bear whatever consequences that her decisions may bring. She holds herself deeply accountable for everything that she does, and some things that she doesn't do as well. Her sense of responsibilities encompasses more than herself, at times leading her to feel guilt for actions she did not necessarily have any part in, such as repercussions from what other members of the Clock Tower do, or Magecraft in general. Indeed, the personal guilt that Catherine holds for herself is more a sense of guilt for the world that she feels obligated to bear for herself; though no one has pressed her on this issue, it is primarily from her belief that if people like her do not take responsibility, then no one will. This guilt has evolved into helplessness, as she feels far less capable, if not entirely incapable, without the Command Seals to become a Master.
On a personal note, Catherine is rather reserved, keeping to herself and allowing no one in. As a result, she comes off as standoffish and dangerously impersonal, which is what she is actually like. She suffers from bouts of loneliness, though also lacks the means to rectify this social and emotional dilemma with her character. Her continued absence of Command Seals only worsens Catherine's current depressive state, waiting for a life that may never come to someone obsessed with doing whatever they can to change the world.
