Name: Ashley Russell
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Ceres Station (Orbit of Ceres, now defunct)
Faction: Axis Zeon
Rank: Petty Officer
Appearance:
Ashley Russell is a feisty but awkward looking teenage girl with bright red hair and brilliant blue eyes. She is 5'3" tall and weighs 120 pounds, her body is feminine with some light muscle tone. Her facial appearance is often regarded as cute, especially when she gets frustrated. Her pilot suit is custom which is white in color with black as the secondary color. But when it comes to her actual officer uniform, its pretty standard.
Personality: Ash is a very laid back individual, some might call her a slacker. But she makes up with it for her powerful drive... some might call it an addiction for a challenge. For the most part she is extremely detached, anyone that flies into battle is ready to die so it doesn't bother her. She doesn't necessarily or entirely believe in the Zeon cause, just that they've trusted her with hardware despite not being one of their career officers. Ash will salute and stand at attention and respect all of the stuff she has to follow, but otherwise she does whatever needs to get done. In her time off she can be found playing a video game testing her skills in a simulator or even running one in her mobile suit.
History:
Ashley Russell was born UC 0071 at mining colony orbiting the dwarf planet Ceres. The colony itself was a modified stanford torus type, her father was its administrator. Her mother was one of the few doctors on hand and she also had 5 older brothers. From Ash's earliest memories she remembered that the colony openly supported the Principality of Zeon, even cutting them deals for supplies. They returned the support by arming the station with a mega-particle cannon to ward off the Federation. Closer to the start of the One Year War, one by one her brothers left to enlist in upcoming battle. Ash had always been an awkward child, always preferring to play video games than interact with any of the children on the station. When she was 7 she remembered her father breaking down after getting several letters over the next few months, one by one her older brothers had been listed as KIA or MIA. The war was going grim for Zeon, her father seemed like a fool for supporting them... he had encouraged his sons to their deaths.
By UC 0083 her father was a drunkard... her uncle was his "vice administrator" but had basically assumed all of his brother's responsibilities. Things took a turn for the worst when he suddenly took the controls of the old Zeon mega-particle battery and destroyed a Federation ship that wanted a resupply. He refused to surrender to the Federation when they sent an angry response, claiming that he would shoot any Feddie ship within two hundred thousand miles. The 3000 colonists fled to the other nearby asteroids or colonies that would take them. Her mother who still believed in Zeon, was granted to live on Axis due to her medical doctorate... taking Ashley with her. Her father hoarded all of the remaining supplies on the station and locked himself away in the central core until a ship came. Many watched from afar as he took shots at the Salamis, but the ship stayed out of his accurate range until his guns overheated. They deployed Mobile Suits to destroy the battery which was now all too easy to them. But when the Salamis went to board the colony, her father sent broadcast a short broadcast of "Sieg Zeon!". He then detonated the colony's reactor taking the entire Salamis and Mobile Suits it had brought with him.
Ashley did not miss her father as much as her mother did, from a gaming perspective he was a sore loser. She deepened her somewhat lonely existence often blowing off their school to go to Axis's equivalent of an arcade. A lot of the games were the same, but a few were new to her. What mainly interested her were the simulators, the controls were easy to learn as they were not all that different to some of the fighter games or from the setup as a mobile worker. Ash probably spent a majority of her time out of the day she wasn't at school hogging one of them. Her mother often scolded her, often personally escorting her to school when she wasn't working. Ashley wasn't even vaguely aware that she was being scouted from her addiction to the simulator games. When they saw that she consistently was getting one of the top scores, Ashley was approached by men in uniform. When they escorted her home, she first thought this was about her skipping school... so did her mother. But when the word recruitment was brought up, it surprised her. Her mother was against it, having lost the rest of her children to war. The officer was understanding but wanted her to screen her with an actual simulator. Ashley was skeptical, but told her that it was like playing a video game... just on ultra hardcore mode. Her mother saw through what they wanted, this was about increasing their pool of pilots, trying to find Newtypes among the populace.
They gave the young girl time to think it over, giving her a vistor's pass to the military sector. It wouldn't take longer than a week for her curiosity to get the better of her. She took the offer to try her skills out in their Mobile Suit simulators. It was certainly different, but not a foreign experience. She had limited fuel and ammo, her "fighter" could survive glancing blows but not direct hits. They started her off easy, pitting her against RB-79s before slowly advancing the difficulty to include enemy Mobile Suits. The experience changed her, after about 80 hours of simulation, she accepted their offer to become a pilot. Had they exploited her addiction to video games? Or had she exploited them into giving her a harder challenge that normal games couldn't provide? Experiencing the severe G-forces from with the way she moved the mobile suit were the most problematic period of her training, but after a few months of practical simulations and mock combats she was actually showing promise as a real pilot and not just in theoretical combat. She was never really assigned a unit until the last moment, she was assigned to the 1st Advanced Recon Fleet just prior to their departure.
