The Revenant's movement towards verticality was unhindered for now, but the obvious enclosed space was a tight fit, not suited for a wide range of vertical movement in any vast way. This was a cage in a sense, made of solid stone. The eyes of this stone hidden creature noticed the Revenant turn it's attention towards it, before looking away....
It wasn't even paying attention to the monsterous insect, but rather the roots that had begun to grow. Even as the Revenant dug into the stone it didn't seem to care, the stonework obviously not a part of the creature. Still, it did react to the scent of burning stone, lunging forward toward out from under the stone.... And towards the wall of roots that was blocking the doorway. A trail of iridescent liquid followed it , reminding the Revenant of the strange almost liquid like creatures that created trails of slime behind it.
The creature's body did resemble a slug, slightly translucent to a degree, with of some kind of slime coating it with iridescent colors of greens and blues, and glowing with energy of some kind. It wasn't as intense as the Ram or Leopard's energy. It was soft, yet bright. That was the best way to describe it. Still, the roots seemed to react to this energy, withering back, as the creature's front body opened exposing a mouth full of razor sharp teeth that seemed to be able to dig into the root with no negative effect....

What they thought was all part of a single entity turned out to be predator and prey, the thought of themselves being one rung lower in this relationship stung for a moment.
The insect was quick to dredge out their weapon from the stone to face this new creature, but it didn't look like they were part of their diet. It was some sort of bottom feeder, seemingly specialized in churning through the odious flora, at an obnoxiously brisk pace. It looked meaty and delectable, however, it also looked like it made short work of the plants that bit back, and if that was correct, then it was resilient to its most potent weapon. The revenant spit-chattered, cursing this damnable inadequacy. Not taking the slug's indiference for granted, the insect kept its wings high, letting it move on and unclog the way so that it could hurry out and commence their hunt.

The slug ate without hurry, and the roots that had extended outwards had begun to retreat, as though realizing that it was baited out. The threat seemed to receed, and the roots being eaten by the slug creature seemed to be paralyzed, as they seemed to twitch and some areas around the bites foamed somewhat. It was the same reaction as the Revenant's acidic attack against the roots from before. Something was happening, but it was clear that this was likely something to do with this Insect creature's bites.
After a few minutes, the creature finished chewing away the top of the roots, falling down with the roots. Immediately, it raised it's eye stalked back out, and looked directly at her. It watched Revenant this time, then to the stone the Revenant had damaged. The slug looked back, and a sensation of disapproval struck Revenant's mind. This creature was likely as strong as her.... But it's evolution was made to reflect it's prey.
The mucus had also hardened from where the slug had moved towards, appearing glass like as it became clear where the trail had come from.
Then there was the sensation of inquiry, followed by curiosity towards the insect before itself that struck Revenant again. This is the third creature who was able to communicate in some manner with the Revenant, but this was less words, and more a conveyance of emotion directed towards her.

Watching this slug take its sweet time reminded the mantid of how crude that method of consumption was. Perhaps at some point the mantid would repurpose its own mouth for something useful to quell that instinct once and for all.
The insect felt that intrusive tinge again, tensing its muscles and letting their wings tinge once as to scout their surroundings with noise. It couldn't perceive anything else here, physically or spiritually, which meant the culprit must be this critter, quaint. The Revenant gave a slow snarl, raising its scythe to cradle it in its hand, there was enough disapproval in this headspace, it didn't need theirs. The insect paced closer to the exit, incurious and impatient, although it was apparent that the slug was the opposite on both ends as it felt the slug readdress it with blank quandaries. The insect is here for fresh prey, much as this monster presumably is, there was no more conversation to be had.

The slug creature didn't relay understanding, but it's choice to move from the doorway despite not finishing it's meal indicated such. It darted away with surprising speed along it's glass trail, before swerving off the glass. The moment it touched new ground, it's speed decreased significantly to a crawl. It was clear that on its previous trails it could get away from any predator, but outside of it's trail it needed to forge a new path.
With the slug out of the way of the door, and the roots seeming non-responsive, the path was clear for Revenant to leave if ot desired, or do whatever it wished.... Though as it would leave, she would feel a tinge of pity.

It hurried up, that's as much cooperation as they would demand.
The monster didn't flinch as the creature coasted off of the transparent surface, seemingly of its own design, there had to be an explanation as how it managed to stay alive for so long outside of merely being not worth the meat-to-chew ratio. With no more significance to be drawn from the strange room other than the home of some underground creature, the mantid chose to depart and backtrack, seemingly having to settle for one of the exits they had discarded. The monster briefly jerked its head to their right, as if a fly buzzed uncomfortably close, snarling off the foreign sentiment as they walked off their own way.

As the Revenant began to move down the hall, she could hear noise coming from the previous path she ignored. It hadn't been as noisy as before, but she could tell it was the sounds of humans. Their noise was easily identifiable. Moving further down, she'd continue on before seeing a bit of light in the distance. It was coming from the top of the stone tunnel, slit as the noise became more audible.
"I can't believe we're still searching for those damned things. Doesn't RnD already have like three baby ones or something?!"
"Just shut up. If we can find at least an adolescent that's three weeks vacation AND a bonus. Besides, it can't be that hard to find a Glass Slug."
Revenant would find that the light came from a trap door that was made with a grate. The hinges and wrought iron frame as rusted as the bars from the dungeon. She'd see a human standing atop the door without realizing it's existence. There was still more distance ahead if she wanted to continue, but there was also a fresh meal right here and a way to go upwards again.

Finally, something less up to their speed.
Even though it was literally their goal when making the dive to the messy network of sewers, the mantid had not calculated being so close to the surface already. The insect skittered with care, they've been having mountain treats for a while now and apparently have a mountain of mountain treats at their beck and call back home, it would be nice to have another tender human morsel for a change. The monster wasn't much for their conversation, but they sounded weary, not necessarily tired, but of faltering conviction for being at a task too long. An interesting lesson learned from stalking caravans, slaying prey mid-conversation was quite effective at dispersing morale.
Emerging upwards and violently splitting this person from toe to head sounded like a helpful, fear-inducing entrance, however, the mantid could hear two voices but not clearly assess the terrain above, nor whether there might be more people around them, so they would invite their curiosity instead with this faulty-looking food delivery trap that these humans engineered for some unimportant reason. The Revenant took a swift, subtle horizontal swipe just below the grate, with nothing but playful intent. It then moved its costae to peek from the grate and hold tightly to the bars before reaching out with their hand and pulling it open, raring to catch the falling human with their scythe and retreat back into the shadows.
It is usually of poor form to skewer someone's spine; it robs them of air and silences their screams, the Revenant sought to forego that precious bit of wisdom for once.

The two individuals paused for a moment as they both aimed at a singular direction, as though there was only one possible place that such a threat could come from. The two stayed silent for a while, before one of them said, "Maybe just a rock?" one said, before the other irritated sighed. "Why are they so focused on these things?! They only eat those fucking roots and vines that we can't even get proper samples of without half of our men suddenly becoming blood bAAAAAAAAAAAH!" As the grate fell in, and the sound of a body bouncing off a metal rung and stone wall with two splats echoed.
For the revenant, the move was performed flawlessly, as she not only skewered her intended target on her scythe, but would dive back into the shadow to eat her meal as the other human panicked. "JACK! JACK! CAN YOU HEAR ME!?" The human sounded concerned, but then he answered, "I'M COMING DOWN!" He said, clearly not seeing what had happened to his friend or being able to see far enough down with the limited light he had available. The sounds of something coming down echoed into the halls as the Revenant's next prey began to climb down. It'd take time to travel that distance down safely.

The nuances of human nomenclature continued to elude the mantid. This "Jack" was completely different from the last one.
He tasted about the same though, hardy meat, tempered by the fear of death, a delicacy to the monster's probosces. The creature hugged its morsel with the costae on its back, to prevent itself from making a mess as it evaporated from chest to head, then absorbing the rest of his existence limb by limb. The mantid stayed to the shadows, its presence only announced by a soft sizzle. The monster held position, equally focused and intruigued, the first one took but an ounce of effort, and it expected the second one to take even less.
The human had already forfeit their life the moment they chose to climb down, for their demise was already waiting for him, invisible, lurking, a slash of energy congealed in time and space, ready to open them up. Of course, the Revenant couldnt afford to put much heft into it, it wouldn't cleave them in half, spines were odious like that, but humans aren't so resilient. The insect considered itself accurate enough to slice their throat with it if they were careless, but it would be more interesting if they weren't and the insect had to unleash the strike less optimally. What would happen then? If their stomach tore open? If their eyes were gouged from their sockets? If their arms were severed enough to render them a burden, but not enough to ease them of it?
The mantid finished their plate of fear, itching to pull the trigger and season the next one with terror.

The other individual climbed down, the echoes of rubber on rusty metal rungs making it clear how far away the individual was from the monster's trap.
Tunk, tunk, tunk, tunk, tun-
Then the sudden stop. A pause roughly half way down. The "Jack" had fallen to the Revenants clutches, but a splotch of blood from the fall and striking the rung at an odd angle left a bloody mark on the ancient ladder. "There's no way..... No way he survived that.... Might... No,"
Tunk, tunk, tunk...
The man resumed their descent before the Revenant saw the beginning of a leg come from the opening in the roof. A little more patience, and a bloody death would befall the-
Suddenly a new voice rang out from above. The sound of harsh scratching like static that echoed for a moment before it came from the man descending. "*Group E, I heard someone scream. Report your status, Over.*". That second voice was different from what she had heard before. A barely audible hissing Buzz had come from her most recently melted victim, before it fizzled.
"This is Group E, Jack just fell into a access chute. I am going to confirm if we need medical evac, over!". The other person said, their lowered leg still barely pass the Revenant's trap, primed for dismemberment.
