Common Info
Name: Sam Flots
Alias: Sea Phantom
Titles: Navigator/Repairman
Race: Fishman (Koi Fishman)
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Place of Origin:
Bounty: None yet
Physical Info
Visual Picture: No picture, finding art of Fishmen is hard :/
Physical description: Sam is a Koi Fishman of tall (~2m, depending on how much he slouches), slender build. His most striking feature is his iridescent scales that cover most of his back, shoulders and arms. These scales shimmer in the sunlight, and subtly change color to reflect his surroundings. While underwater, he can be very difficult to spot because of this.
He has the whiskers of a Koi protruding like a mustache, giving the impression he is older than he actually is. His arms are also longer than average, reaching a little past his knees.
Around his neck are several heavy scars in a ring, which he normally hides.
Clothes: Sam usually goes shirtless, as he dislikes the feeling of clothes on his scales. He wears knee-length blue shorts, and plain sandals while on land. Around his neck is a dark scarf that he doesn’t like to take off.
Defining feature: Sams most notable feature is his shiny scales, that shimmer like a thousand shards of mirror glass.
Personal Items:
- A black scarf that shows obvious signs of wear and tear, yet he refuses to give it up.
- A reed flute he likes to play.
Personal Info
Personality: Sam is a kinda awkward and nervous person, slow to trust strangers but fiercely loyal to his friends. He becomes drunk very easily, and when this happens he comes out of his shell and becomes quite affable. Otherwise, he tends to offer his advice to those he trusts, and not make too many executive decisions himself. A follower, not a leader.
Morals:
- Mercy: Sam doesn’t believe in justice. Justice isn’t good, only fair. And we can be better than to give people what they deserve - we can give them something better. Everyone should be allowed a second chance. He’ll gladly save the lives of his enemies, if he has the chance.
- Freedom: No one should live under the yoke of servitude. He despises a bully or anyone who would put people under their shoe. He looks more to letting the victim escape than to take down the perpetrator, however.
Passion: Sam loves the feeling of the open sea. If he could, he would live on a ship that never made port - a seafaring paradise where everywhere you looked, there was only more ocean.
Loathe:
- Slavery: Sam loathes the institution of slavery, and wishes it abolished. Whenever he can, he will try to free any slaves he comes across.
- Dirt: Sam hates getting muddy or dirty, and is most at peace underwater where he can wash himself ‘till his heart’s content.
Flaw:
- Lightweight: He gets drunk extremely quickly - a single swig of liquor will have him reeling.
- Low self-esteem: Very easily insulted, and can go into a sulk if that happens.
- Cowardice: For now at least, Sam prefers running from a hard problem rather than standing up to it. Perhaps with the right friends, he can learn to stand up for himself.
Personal Goal/Dream:
- Meeting his hero: He wishes more than anything to meet Kajiro the Tempest again. And on that day, he wants to have lived a life Kajiro would be proud of, to show him that he wasn’t wrong to save the young fishman.
- Ending slavery: Though he has no idea how, Sam wishes for a world where no one is bought or sold.
Defining Moment:
From an early age, Sam was a slave. Captured by slavers during a seafloor stroll, he was sold as a trophy from owner to owner who loved to have his beautiful scales light up their aquariums.
At an auction, he was bought by a Celestial Dragon that phoned in his bid via Den Den Mushi, overbidding everyone by a nautical mile. And so Sam was put on a ship headed for Mary Geoise, his final destination a fishbowl in the Holy Land.
If it hadn’t been for Kajiro the Tempest. A freedom-fighting pirate who sails the fast, stealthy ship “Windfury” across stormy seas in order to attack government transports and generally be a thorn in the side of authority. The Windfury struck by night, sinking the ship and rescuing Sam and a few other acquisitions. During the attack Sam’s slave collar malfunctioned and partially exploded, and in response Kajiro tore a piece of the Windfury’s black sails in order to bandage the wound.
Sam was deposited in a semi-legal port city in West Blue, where he was unlikely to be found by whoever was looking for the ship. He couldn’t travel with Kajiro and his crew, but saw them sail away and wising to follow on those waves some day.

Tactics info
Personal Equipment:
Sam doesn't really carry a lot of equipment. The things he uses for navigation and repairs he keeps on the ship, not on his person.
Skills:
- Enhanced Strength and Durability: As with all fishmen, Sam enjoys the benefits of his heritage in the form of a powerful build and an ability to take lots of damage.
- Navigation: Sam knows how to read the weather, travel by stars, and navigate using ocean currents.
- Ship repair: After having worked some his free years at a dubious dockyard, Sam knows his way around fixing a ship. He can't build a ship from scratch, but he can keep one floating to the nearest dock. It helps that he can repair hull breaches from underwater outside the ship.
- Speaking to fish: A rare ability among fishmen, Sam knows how to communicate with ocean life. He can only talk to smaller fish (nothing bigger than a tuna fish), and certainly no oceanic predators. Nonetheless, this skill enables him to more effectively navigate unfamiliar seas by speaking to the local schools of fish.
- Fishman karate (basic): Sam learned a few principles of Fishman Karate when he was stored together with a master of the art while he was a slave. Sadly, he was resold again before he could learn anything more than the basics which he has later repurposed into his own wrestling style.
Haki:
Until Haki is capable of being learned, this will stay empty.
Combat Style:
Sam specializes in stealth and surprise tactics. Using his scales to blend into his surroundings, he jumps in and out of combat, striking with home-made wrestling maneuvers, boosted by his fishman strength.
As a fishman, he does have enhanced strength and durability. He often uses it to grapple enemies and dive into the water with them whenever he gets the chance, as he can become practically invisible in his natural element.
He knows the basics of fishman karate, and can throw uchimizu. He would like to know more, though, and is still a bit too timid to truly stand his ground as the techniques require.
Techniques:
- Sea stealth strike: Sam jumps from a hidden position underwater with extreme speed, surprising his enemy with a powerful blow before possibly vanishing back into the water. Very effective when attacking ships, and can enhance the effectiveness of his other techniques.
- Dazzling burst: Sam curls up, and realigns his scales such that they reflect the light of a nearby light source or the sun. This strong light can temporarily blind his opponents, allowing him to escape or hide for a sneak attack.
- Koi camouflage: Using his color-shifting scales, Sam blends into his surroundings. Works best underwater, but can be used on land if his opponent is distracted or the surroundings are chaotic enough.
- Uchimizu (water shot): Sam hurls a water droplet with immense force, thanks to his immense fishman strength. It strikes like a bullet, and is very effective when thrown from his stealthy positions.
- Clothesline: What it says on the tin. Not as fancy as fishman karate, but a speedy blow to the neck is never to be underestimated.
- The fishman’s elbow: When his enemy is distracted, blinded, or stunned, Sam takes a high position and goes to slam an elbow into whichever part of his foe is more exposed. A finishing move on land, or a excellent way to knock his opponent into the water.
- Seaplex and Pilediver: Similar results from different techniques. Rather than slamming his enemies into the ground, Sam grabs them and jumps into nearby water. Due to his fishman abilities, going in the water doesn’t slow him down - the slam goes even faster down towards the bottom. The triple threat of suddenly changing water pressure, risk of drowning, and having one’s head slammed into the seafloor makes this the most dangerous maneuver in Sam’s arsenal for anyone on the recieving end.
