She didn't want to admit it, but the situation was spiraling out of control. Out of her control. Even amidst the four force fields she was actively concentrating on, Susan had the space to imagine the aftermath. Particularly Herman's scolding of her handling of the operation. To which she would've offered little rebuttal. She wasn't one to skirt away from responsibility. Especially if any of them got hurt, or worse. All the more reason to ensure everyone's safety and survival. Her determination didn't waver. She still had a plan. Not a particularly creative one, but something that could help her get the rest of her team to the shore.
Just as she finished her thoughts, Sue felt a sudden force that almost broke her concentration. One of the creatures struck Rose's field. It held, but she was set back a few steps, along with the creature. Susan had a few moments to decide her course of action, knowing that her subordinate's field would be subject to more strikes momentarily. She also didn't miss the predicament Astra was put in.
Dr. Storm, in her will and skill with multitasking, set out to accomplish several things at once. Or rather, set them in motion in succession. She only had to decide which part to do first.
Within moments, her decision was made. Turning towards the two gentlemen with her, Susan's following information was delivered with enough caution that the two understood and also with an authoritative voice.
"Guns at the ready, guys. I'm going to disperse our field for a moment, then form it back up. We will then run and shoot at them until we get to Astra. I'll cover our flanks and behind as best I can, but I'm counting on you two to not miss a shot."
A kernel of doubt planted itself in Susan's thoughts. A tiny one, but still making significant progress through her thought process. She shut it out as much as she could. Doubt had no place here.
The first phase of her plan was executed thusly: Susan took the energy from the reinforced field around herself, Jenkins, and Kwan, making it into a powerful 360 degree shockwave that she then released all around her. The aim of it being to hopefully send most of the creatures around them reeling back, at the very least. At best, they would be knocked down. She then immediately vocally and physically gestured for her teammates to follow and shoot as she began making her way to her assistant. After the shockwave, Susan formed a field around the trio once again, but a slightly lighter one for quicker movement.
Before the next phase, Susan had a command to issue.
"ASTRA! Sights on Collins!"
Her order hopefully carried the meaning she intended to convey. She'd ensure it by swiftly forming two disks, aiming to provide an example of what she meant with a demonstration on the other creature. With the swing of her hand, she'd hurl them at great speed towards the creature making its way towards Herman. On successful impact, the creature would be sliced apart, but she kept a valiant eye on it, in case the result was dissatisfactory.
That marked the beginning of the next phase. After the first disk, Susan began taking pieces of the makeshift force field floor from behind them, which she had created at the start and started hurling the pieces at every beast she could see. All the while making sure that they still had something to stand on before properly reaching solid ground. The flying fields and gunfire created a cacophony with the assailants' unnatural sounds that would've provided an intriguing sonic experience had it happened at any other time.
The trio kept running, kept up their assault, with no clear evidence of the creatures letting up yet. Her end goal was to reach Astra, absorb her field into her own and then quickly expand it, densify it, making sure to get Rose in with the others as well.
The final phase would see them together again, making the final stretch towards Hughes and containing the situation until reinforcements arrived.

"On it!"
As Rose went wheeling, Astra swung her rifle around to meet the creature, steadily aiming as Storm had taught her to do. Breath out. Focus on the point you want to hit. Take a fraction of a second, no more, no less. Astra had been wary of guns at the start, even the electric rifles of Planetary, which were less lethal than regular bullets but still made her squeamish. Susan had taught her to move past her fear, but there was still the hesitation. The moment of panic, fear of causing harm to a living creature. But as Astra had been told several times now, alien beings from different planets or dimensions didn't care about that kind of thing.
"If it's not them, it'll be you, or worse, your friends."
Astra squeezed the trigger. Lightning burst from the muzzle, crackling as it met the air, leaping across the gap between her and the charging beast. She had been tasked to protect her allies, and she wouldn't be the weak link in this chain.

Susan suspended her force field to... nothing. For a split-second, everything seemed to freeze. Then, there was a resounding shockwave that blew outwards in all directions, quickly and aggressively like a hurricane gale. Everyone and everything that wasn't within the confines of Susan' bubble were engulfed by the spontaneous force. The two creatures that had been on the exposed flank were sent flying backward. They landed with one another, their errant forms entangled in panic and fury. With the time they had, both Kwan and Jenkins blasted these two with everything that they had. The concentrated energy assaulting their forms quickly reached a fever pitch that resulted in an explosion not unlike the one that Susan had just generated. When the dust leared, there was nothing left of the two things. Kwan barely had time to catch his breath while he retreated and pulled for another charge pack. Jenkins, grimacing, finally emptied his first. The two focused on moving into their new positions. Meanwhile, the three creatures that had not yet caught up with their group stood their ground, but only just. They were fully rebuffed by Sue's shockwave. They would not be able to move for several seconds afterwards before they could regain their composure, but they also weren't going to be targeted by the men who were reloading their weapons. For Rose, the shockwave was too much for her reduced equilibrium. She tumbled to the ground, hard. She kept a steady grip on the limp stranger, tucking his body into her suit as both of them rolled against the sand. On the other hand, the thing chasing them balked, displaced by the sudden change in atmosphere. Its limbs flailed in a poor attempt to right itself. Then Astra's shot struck it dead center. It howled in pain - it sounded like a dying radiator and a high-pitched electric whine together in one. It slumped into the sand, down and nearly out. This was not what Herman had in mind when Doctor Tesla had assigned him mandatory cardio sessions. His body was screaming at him from at least three different directions, and for what? These things had been nipping at his heels ever since this discord had begun. He was nearly at their mobile operations station (an oversized sedan, truly, but Doctor Hughes was quite insistent about the nomenclature). He dared look back... and instantly regretted it. One of those things was lunging at him. Then, the lunging thing became two pieces. Then five. No grotesque fluids deposited themselves upon him. His own sweat and fatigue would suffice for that. Whatever these things were, Susan's abilities tore through them more cleanly than anything the bitter doctor had seen before. Perhaps there was something to this after all... he could ponder such things later, when he wasn't flat on the ground. This handful of seconds had sent him to the ground, his body splayed like a rag doll not far from him. Everything started happening quickly, again. That is to say, chaos resumed. Herman rose to his feet quickly, clumsily. The three creatures dashed madly at Astra. Rose was getting back on her feet, slowly, with the stranger in tow. Herman finished running into the oversized sedan mobile operations station. His communicator that he had thoughtlessly left on the makeshift desk was blipping. Herman practically slammed his body into the desk to grab the communicator. He brought it up to his lips in a desperate blur. "Now would be good!"Just then, the rift expanded in size by 15% before dispersing several more of these things, at least five by visual counts. However, almost as soon as they materialized, inexplicable rays of white-hot energy assailed them, one to each creature. They were vaporized, instantly. Above, the silhouette of a humanoid figure clad in black and gold hovered, resplendent with that very energy. The cavalry had arrived.

The plan was working. Mostly. Her fields did the necessary damage, but not enough to have them all safe from the immediate danger. It was getting frustrating. That something could become as big of a nuisance in such a short amount of time. At the very least, her force fields struck the intended targets, sans Rose. Susan made a note to see her in recovery after. Besides, she was holding perhaps the most valuable source of information they could have at this time.
Susan bore little mind to Kwan and Jenkins, having complete trust in their capabilities and their ability to follow orders. A boon of working with professionals. The trio kept moving, soon enough getting close enough to Astra, Rose, and the shore. Herman was still a ways ahead, yet a brief glance showed that Susan's strike had worked.
Before she could envelop her two colleagues into her field again, there was the pressing matter of her assistant being in danger. Susan could feel herself bubbling with frustration, finding an outlet for it in the form of a trio of force fields, expanded and made dense enough to crush anything below them. While still holding up the field containing her and the two gentlemen, Susan's extra fields appeared above the creatures aiming themselves at Astra. In a swift, dramatic motion of her free hand, Susan slammed the three fields down. Where Astra was, there was now enough solid ground to ensure a serious impact should the fields catch the creatures. She was certain they would. She had to be, there was no time for doubt.
Just as her action was completed, the rift behind them, now over the water, expanded. She looked back, eyes slightly widened. The anomaly certainly liked its element of surprise. Creatures emerged from it, Susan gaining an estimated number when they were suddenly not there anymore. Streams of energy disintegrating them into nothing. She turned towards the source, finding it to be a familiar figure. The Ray.
"A sight for sore eyes, Ray!"
The words simply came out, their unintentional nature not in her thoughts. Her tone made it clear that Susan was definitely relieved. Whether it be a small squad of agents or a capable hero, she didn't care. Help was help and this situation was crying out for some.
As if rejuvenated, Susan made determined steps towards Astra and Rose, hoping to envelop them in her field with no critters around to thwart them. Their next destination would be that of Dr. Hughes'. The end was in sight and if fortune smiled upon them, they could soon begin examining the findings from this mishap of an operation. Sue made another note to herself, relating to responsibility.
"Alright, one final stretch!"
Before she would set off in a direct beeline to Hughes with her colleagues in tow, Sue had one more request to ask of her cavalry.
"Ray, cover us please."

The death of the creature was dramatic, loud and violently upsetting. Astra felt herself frozen as her eyes were fixed on what she had done. She hadn't been ready to watch herself take a life of another being, alien or not. It shook her to her core, and even though her eyes moved to fix on the three creatures rushing towards her, she found that her body wouldn't move. Her muscles wouldn't react, despite her brain screaming at every part of her body to react, to raise the gun and fire, or turn and flee, or, darn it, do something! Something other than just lie down and die, to accept that her own hands had taken something else's life before it could take that of her friends. Something other than give into the darkness of the world, to accept that life wasn't all roses and daisies and adventure and fun. Astra's jaw clenched, a silent scream held behind wild, fearful eyes.
Susan's forcefields shook her mind free. What was she doing? Dr. Storm hadn't brought her on this expedition to stand around and let herself get killed, or to be someone who had to be protected. What was she doing, other than leaving herself open for others to pick up her slack? Astra swallowed, hard, and raised the rifle again to take aim. The forcefield's may have been enough, but suddenly Astra felt she had to prove herself. Her mis-calculations could end up in someone dying. What had her uncle told her? Her powers were incredible, moving down the generations of the Zappon family so they could do incredible things. It wasn't just about exploring the universe. Astra had been born with these abilities to do good. They had given her a place in Planetary, under Dr. Storm, for a purpose.
So she raised the rifle, and fired. Three times, no hesitation, a blast of electricity at each of the beings. Whether or not they escaped Susan's attacks, they would have to also evade Astra's fire, and she hoped that would be enough to stop them from getting to her other companions. Astra's terrified eyes were also focused, and she felt a fist clench around her stomach, but she did not waver. Not again. Astra had to do better if she wanted to live up to Susan Storm's praise!

The Ray soared through the air, banking sharply for a quick turnaround. He let out a loud whoop, and unleashed another bombardment on the offending creatures coming out of the rift. Again, he got all of them. Nearly. With quick thinking, subsequent blasts of sun-hot light obliterated the remaining monsters that would have joined the remaining pack. The pack in question stood little chance against Susan and Astra's assault. They made short work of them... though while they continued to their destination, yet more of them emerged on the rift side of the beach. Ray cursed under his breath, and got to work. He would do; for now. The team quickly piled into the sedan, or at least gathered around the back, its doors flung open. Herman was sitting (more like sprawled) on the computer chair he had set up at the makeshift desk inside. He was hunched over, holding his left arm in pain. Even under his blazer and uniform, it looked visibly swollen. The communicator was somewhere on the floor. Herman had forgotten about it already. When Susan came in, he tried to get up, then doubled back into the chair with a grunt. He grimaced, then jerked his hand in a pointing gesture twice, first at a side table, then back outside, in the direction of the growing rift. On the table was a small, mechanical handheld device, glittering with blue lights. Once Susan and Astra entered the interior, they would be able to hear an odious hum coming from that thing. Rose, meanwhile, quickly set the stranger on the love seat that somehow fit inside this thing. Once she was sure that he was secure, Rose headed back outside, watching the Ray continue to keep the monsters at bay... for now. It was steadily getting worse.

The group finally made it to the shore proper. At least something worked out. Was Susan's plan complicated? Perhaps. Did it work, despite the surprises? Absolutely. She also made note of Astra's resolve, knowing how doing what Susan had asked went against many of her core beliefs. Sue reminded herself to thank and apologize to Astra after this was done. This was supposed to be a very different mission.
Which was made even more evident when they reached the vehicle, its doors revealing an injured Herman. Susan didn't notice the device first, as she had more pressing concerns for that brief moment.
"Astra, tend to Dr. Hughes' arm please."
As most Planetary operatives, Astra had emergency medical training. It wasn't much, but until they got back to HQ, she could still at least see what the issue was. Barely a moment later, she followed Herman's wordless gestures to the device he was frantically begging her to use.
She froze. Her eyes widened in disbelief.
What laid before her was the Ultimate Nullifier. A seemingly innocuous device, yet something created by Reed with monstrous capabilities. She knew exactly what it could do. The mere fact that this was even here... a thousand questions popped into her mind. Yet those were drowned out by one, which she would fling at Herman with a tone that was desperately trying to hide an emotion Susan Storm relayed exceedingly rarely: rage.
"Herman, what the-- how the hell do you have this?"
Her voice rose at that particular word, though it was discernible only through her sheer restraint at not unleashing a rant at him for somehow being in possession of this damn thing. She anxiously waited for his response, refusing to reach for it until then. The Ray's battle against the beasts still raged in the background. They weren't out of the woods yet.

Astra didn't have time to catch her breath. She looked at Hughes as the doors swung open, noting his swollen arm even as Sue instructed her to tend to it. She put the rifle to one side, grabbing instead a first aid kit from one of the units affixed to the interior walls. Astra was more at home with equipment that saved lives, not that destroyed them. She didn't have time to consider what she had done, and was thankful for it. Guilt would have to wait.
Even as she went about Hugh's injuries, stripping back the sleeves with scissors and applying salve to the bruising and swelling. Astra was rolling gauze around the wound when Susan's words cut through the desperate noise of the outside. She flinched, she had to stop what she was doing because her own reaction was so visceral. Astra had never encountered Doctor Storm's true anger before. She paused, looking towards the object for the first time, across at Doctor Hughes, then finally at Susan, eyes wide with trepidation and fear. She felt like she knew the answer before she asked it. The device was nothing good.
"Doctor Storm... what is that thing?"

Even with rudimentary first aid, it was clear that something was happening to Doctor Hughes' physiology. If not his arm, then for the fact that parts of his skin were faintly glowing. He allowed Astra to do her work, though he seemed more annoyed than anything else. The pain wasn't what was bothering him.
Herman snarled back at Susan. "Don't you think there's something a little more pressing?!" His non-affected arm flailed, trying to point at the device and then at the rift outside as he had done before. They had a handful of minutes before the onset of these anomalies exceeded Ray's ability to keep them contained... to say nothing of the rift itself. "Use it, Susan! You know it will work!" Herman fell back into his chair, exhausted. That was about all the strength he had left. Astra would need to care for him now. You can try me, at the Hague... once we're home."

That man. That infuriating, stubborn, reckless, petty, envious man. To bring something like the Nullifier, let alone somehow possess it in the first place... What was he trying to prove? That extreme measures were a necessity? That universally destructive forces could be bent to their will? She had answers to those questions, but refused to acknowledge them, because those answers were the simple ones. Susan didn't deal with simple. Because no matter how dire a situation, there was always another way. It was part of her moral center. It was so wholly Susan Storm that she wondered why she was reaching for the device anyway. Touching the Nullifier felt forbidden. She knew who it really belonged to. She knew what it had been used for before. And had they another, immediate way to stop this possible calamity, she wouldn't have grasped it at all. Yet there it was, in her hands. Her gaze had been on Herman this entire time, but took a moment to look down at what she was holding. Its hum reached the back of her skull, a most uneasy feeling. Still merely a piece of technology, she felt as if it was... aware. A foolish notion brought on by an incredible amount of stress. Susan's breathing was as calm as it could be under the circumstances. But her anger hadn't left her once. Her head snapped back at Herman, looking him dead in the eyes again. She ignored every word he said, because speaking to him directly would mean dismantling him entirely. Instead, Sue opted to focus on Astra's brief question. She didn't look at her apprentice, instead letting her stare be glued to Herman for as long as she could. It spoke everything Herman would assume she would've said out loud. "You'll see."Her tone was terse. Not because of the question, but because of the implication. Sue's non-answer was a confirmation in every shape or form about the situation and the device. It also carried a promise to explain everything once it was over, should Astra choose to read it as such. Sue then promptly made her way to the doors, letting her feet touch the sand once more. Before she did the unthinkable, she let her hand rest on one of the open doors, letting out a quiet sigh before looking at Astra proper. Her tone shifted to her more usual cadence, if only barely. "Run a diagnostic on him. He was hit by an interdimensional god knows what. It could prove volatile."This time, Susan looked only at Astra and what she was pointing towards. She couldn't even say his name right now. Susan hated feeling like this. It wasn't her, not when it was this type of anger. As she spoke, her hand gestured to the same table the Ultimate Nullifier laid on. There was a smaller version of the scanning equipment they used in the field before. It wasn't exactly made for medical purposes, but it could likely detect what was ailing the other doctor. She took note of the glow before and couldn't consider her a decent leader in any way if she didn't acknowledge it. As much as an inner part of Sue wanted to leave Herman squirming for just a bit longer. No, she refused to stoop entirely to his level. And she certainly refused to have a lost life on her conscience. Sue had almost pushed her off the door and disappeared back onto the greater battlefield when a necessary thought crossed her mind. Backing up into the pair's view again, she looked at Astra softly. As if looking to apologize, but the time for that was later. Instead, her look and following words were that of gratitude. "Astra... thank you. I owe you a drink."She didn't know if Astra partook. Another thing to find out and possibly apologize for. Susan herself did so only on special occasions, but if they all got out of it in one piece? Well, she had a particular bottle on standby. Her words were followed by Susan now finally disappearing behind the vehicle and back into the fray. As soon as she was far enough, a force field formed around the vehicle and everyone they brought to it before. There was only one thing she could muster to think of as she joined the deafening sounds of the battleground again. May I be forgiven for this transgression. Her words were meant for nobody in particular. They were for anyone willing to listen. Susan walked towards the shore with equal amounts of determination and hesitance. In front of her and above, Ray's energies clashed with those of the beasts. Their screeching sounds so terribly unnatural. In the distance, the source of it all loomed sinister still. An object of wonder turned into a terrifying danger. It looked hungry, as if waiting to devour everything around it, unleash its creatures upon those who merely sought understanding. In all their exploits, there was a statistically high amount of occasions where they were meant with resistance. Were they wrong in attempting to discover? To demystify the universe? Archaeologists of the impossible, they liked to call themselves. If their excursions lead to this, was it the right path? Susan couldn't answer these questions. Not comprehensively. It was why she did this. It was why she had been doing this for all these years. To find those answers, whether she agreed with them or not. And even then, her subordinates looked to her for these answers. Because now it was her responsibility. She had gotten this position, this status because it was what she had dedicated her life for. Feeling helpless, driven to extremes was not what Susan Storm was known for. Yet here she was, unable to find another way. She wondered if she hadn't tried hard enough. If she had finally succumbed to the path of least resistance. Doubt wasn't unfamiliar to the good doctor. But in such times, two soft voices broke through the mess of thoughts permeating her mind. Those who she would cross the stars for. For whom she did all this in the first place. Her children, her legacy. And in that moment, all became clear. The outside world had become muffled, almost slowed down. As if nothing truly existed outside of her. Susan's eyes swept across the field in front of her, like a large painting. She couldn't speak a word. She could only put her eyes on the rift in the distance again. Her arm rose, in which the Nullifier resided. Susan's mind sharpened, focusing on her singular task. Picturing the rift, the abominations it had spawned as one whole, her intention was clear. Susan stood on the precipice. She couldn't gleam the moment when sh--- Click.
And all went quiet.

Astra's face was a story of emotions, confusion blending with fear. She felt like she knew what was about to happen. Susan's words, her body language, the dimming light in her eyes... Astra swallowed hard at the two simple words. She couldn't imagine what she was about to see. Wouldn't imagine it. Yet she had to see, had to know what the man who had been their companion had brought upon them. She shut her eyes, suppressing a welling maelstrom of anxiety in her chest, then nodded. Forced herself to meet Susan's gaze.
"I..."
The words caught in Astra's throat. She squeezed her fists tight as Susan turned at the door. Grateful, apologetic, resigned. You don't have to. Astra wished she could say those words, but she simply nodded vigorously.
"A gin and tonic!" was all she could shout after her. A lame battle cry, but Astra couldn't let Susan step out alone. She turned to Herman, feeling her emotions rising and boiling and... her fingers started the diagnostics going, the computer starting the inpossible task that Planetary had built it for.
Then she stopped. Astra looked hard at Herman, frowning.
"You forced her hand..."
She took a step back, glancing at the screen. Then shook her head.
"Made her do something she didn't want to do..."
Astra fell into a seat opposite him, hands gripping the arms tight. She stared hard at Herman, and an unusual moment of anger swept across her.
"And you let her do it alone? That's... bloody unforgivable!"
Suddenly her form went limp, head rolling backwards. At least, her corporeal form did. Astra's astral form surged forward, a ghost in Herman's eyes. She didn't stop to hear his words, passing through the wall of their makeshift hospital. In this form she felt fresh strength, a renewed resolve, as she closed the distance, seeing Susan ahead, her arm outstretched. Perhaps there was still a chance. Whatever this thing was, Astra could persuade her not to use it. She could change things, become more than a by-stander. Her astral form passed through the air without force, and it wouldn't take long.
Astra was inches away, corporeal hand outstretched.
"Susa-"

Herman, with what dwindling control he seemed to have over his rapidly changing body, regarded Astra with that familiar iciness. "You'll... understand, eventu-uh...ly." His figure slumped, catching itself on the affected arm. It was massive now, proliferated with indescribable growths that could only be described as parasitic. They pulsated, generating a visual shimmering effect across his limb that proceeded to echo across his body. To say the least, he groaned. In pain. The machine began to conduct its analysis of his... "condition". Herman looked back to the girl, barely holding onto his lunch, and even less to consciousness. He stared at her, then his jaw slackened. "Don't... -ou dare..."Outside, things had gone from bad to worse. There were far too many of these things now. One saving grace was that Susan would not have to endure hordes of monsters. Most of them were airborne now, caught in the centrifugal forces that the rift was now generating. Every few seconds, Susan would be able to make out Rose's suit flying with the fauna and debris. Even the Ray, who was still burning brightly, had been sucked into this current. He hadn't stopped trying to blast every anomaly he could, though steadily, his light grew dimmer and dimmer, his beams less effective. Then an errant electronics cabinet clotheslined him, and he became limp, following the rest of the cyclone. Whether it was her own force field abilities or her position, Susan had managed to avoid being swept up with these things. She was in the eye. Then, Astra's projection emerged from the enbubbled van, out into this storm. She was unphased by the forces at work here, though she felt other things. Pressures upon her mind, like a migraine that was rapidly bursting at several points in a proverbial hydraulic engine. Lightheadedness soon followed. Click.
For Susan, there was no color, nor was there white, or black. There was nothing. An imperceptible nothing, known only by her awareness of that inexplicable absence.
Astra was adrift, no longer seeing Brighton Beach. Or New York. Or the Earth, for that matter. It was a darkness that reached on for ever, like space, though there no stars or celestial objects here. A sickly green haze hung over everything. Her perception was mired further by the faintness that she had experienced prior to... this. Slowly, Astra would turn, a listless body in this strange void. It was at that point that she suddenly found herself face to face with the silhouette of a human man. His form moved with a will of its own, wavering and stuttering like he was made of barely visible streaks of electricity. He reached out to her with one of hhis arms. For a split second, the palm of his hand shined purple, and within her mind-
Next time.
Susan fell to the ground with an unceremonious thud. A half-second later, the oversized sedan operations center fell next, with a crash.. Another half-second, and everything else plummeted from where it was, whether that was into the water or the not so sandy shore. Rose, Ray, Kwan, and Jenkins included. Out of all of them, only Rose tried to get up, before quickly slumping back down. The others did not move. There was no trace of any of the rift creatures, nor of the rift itself. The only evidence were the burn marks of the lightning guns, as well as the frantic footwork left by man and beast alike.
"So... did we win?"
At least the Ray made it. Astra, still projecting, found herself back on Brighton Beach, taking all of this in.

Time and space. Concepts that changed definitions daily in the world Planetary inhabited. Both had specific definitions and paradoxically, none at all at the same time. Because what they explored almost always revealed a new facet to these primordial concepts. It sometimes left the group's scientists wondering whether there was any meaning in trying to find a semblance of sense in them at all. Which ultimately devolved into a debate of "Is anything worth exploring? Researching? What is the meaning?" That last question was phrased exactly like that. There wasn't a "of something" after it. It was as general as a question could be. With scientists, that often evolved into a hypothesis. And so on and so forth.
These weren't exactly the things Susan was thinking of as she was... nowhere. But her thoughts were somewhere in that spectrum. She guessed so, anyway. Nothing really made sense. Her thoughts were so distant, her awareness stunningly lacking. If she could've mustered up a feeling to describe it, it would've been "loss." A vital part of her being looking like it was that of another person. A jumbled mess of nothing.
Thud.
With a groan, Susan came to. Everything else around her was in disarray. She remembered nothing concrete of those... however many moments she was in nothingness. But she remembered the sudden escalation before vividly. Yet even that was like a fever dream.
None of that mattered at the moment, no matter how many questions Susan had. The well-being of her team was more pressing. Surveying the area, pretty much everyone was out cold. Even so, Susan made her way to each one, checking their pulse. They were alive, that had to do for now. The Ray's question cut through the silence, prompting a brief response.
"If you can call it that."
Sue's attention shifted from Ray for now, as Astra had remained in her projection form for now, looking disturbed. Sue's composure returned gradually, returning to the astral form, as the girl shouldn't stay like that for too long.
"Astra, it's over. You can retur---"
Her eyes drifted over to the sedan, its state bringing about an immediate fight or flight response in Susan. Adrenaline took over and before she knew it, Sue was sprinting towards it. A single word occupied the entirety of her mind: "no." Repeated endlessly as she got to the vehicle. Its back doors had flung shut, the crash making them jammed. With lightning speed, two force fields enveloped themselves tightly around each door, ripped and flung to her sides as she bore witness to what lay inside.
"Shit."
Herman's condition was deteriorating rapidly. Something she should've seen coming, yet was unable to remedy because she gave in to his wishes. Even then, she largely blamed herself still. Astra's body remained unconscious with evident physical damage from the crash. From an initial glance, it seemed superficial. At least that's what Susan hoped for. Which meant that her first order of business was to tend to Hughes. Nobody was going to die under her watch, least of all the man who was such a thorn in her side. And... who, frankly, saved all of them.
"RAY! TAKE HUGHES TO HQ NOW!"
Sue's voice was loud, her tone exponentially urgent. Her voice had never been the one to have that booming effect, but currently, clear signs of authority ran through it. Herman needed immediate medical attention.
As she waited for Ray, Susan climbed into the damaged vehicle, gently placing a hand on Astra's cheek. She wanted to know what caused her state of distress, but more importantly, Astra had to return to her body first.
"Sweetie. You need to come back now. It's time to go home."
Susan's tone was motherly. Laced with kindness. The girl had clearly gotten more than she had bargained for. The least Sue could do was care for her.

It wasn't the kind of darkness she was used to. Astra had explored the stars, the galaxy and the universe beyond. The idea of a void had been well known to her. Something to traverse, to explore, not something to fear.
Until now.
She couldn't move, or at least experienced no feeling of movement. A faint green mist hung listless around her, but Astra couldn't perceive anything more. She felt panic rising in her chest, astral or otherwise. Then she saw it. The figure.
It moved erratically, like a stock motion shadow, closing in on her. She couldn't do anything to resist it, eyes wide with fear as it began to reach out. A purple light bathed her face, and she heard it. Felt it.
Next time.
Then it was all gone. She was back on the beach, or at least above it, her mind reeling. It had all gone back to normal, save for the carnage of their equipment littering the sand. Astra shook her head. The words were imprinted on her mind. Susan's words were fuzzy as she spoke at Astra, but she barely heard. It wasn't until Susan began to run back to the sedan that she came to her senses.
Astra flew across the beach, reaching the van even as Susan wrenched open the door. Herman was inside, and his condition had deteriorated rapidly. Astra felt guilt in her heart over that. She had been put in charge of him... but she had bigger things to think of now. The words.
Slowly, carefully, Astra slipped back into her physical form. Pain sprang up like lightning, dancing through her body as she sat up hard, pressing herself into Susan's form, her own hand covering her superior's and holding on tight. Feeling the physical touch, reminding herself of the anchor to this world. Astra found herself after a few seconds of breathing, pulled back slightly and looked up into Susan's eyes. They were wide, full of fear and trepidation. Indeed, Astra's whole body, as damaged as it had been from the falling sedan, shook like a leaf in the wind.
"Professor... did... did you see it too?"

The Ray slowly got to his feet, visibly winded from the ordeal. Given that he had gotten hit by several hundred pounds of metal at hurricane speeds, he seemed to be doing pretty well. He helped Susan check up on the rest of her crew, before following her over to the sedan. Though he didn't say anything, his apprehension was evident enough. He still didn't know what this had been about, but clearly they had bitten off more than they could chew. Maybe he should have been here sooner...
He didn't have much time to dwell on it. He quickly flew after Sue as she went over to the toppled, half-crumpled sedan. It was a miracle that they were able to find any bodies in this wreckage. The Ray illuminated his palm like a flashlight, putting it on a swivel until they found Astra... and Herman. The man was hardly recognizable. He was more like... it didn't matter. Ray was already moving to pick him up by the time Susan gave him the order. The Ray grunted under the man's new weight. It would... do. Probably. He offered one last solemn nod to Susan before taking his leave. Tesladyne was in the city, but that didn't mean it was close. Ray was no doctor, but he could only hope that they knew how to fix whatever it was that Herman got.
This was why he stuck to the day shift.
