Background:
Carlos never knew his former life. It is unlikely that he ever will. The first speck of existence he can recall is when his former self was wafting through the ether, unsatisfied with whatever life that he had left behind. That apparent unfinished business, bitterness, occult summoning, whatever mix of factors it actually was, thrust the mind that was Carlos back into the fore, as an eclectic Ectotasm, a conglomerate of ghostly acid given sentience and sobriety.
For a time, Carlos simply meandered through Buster City, listless and unaware of any greater purpose, not knowing why he was brought back, how, or even being capable of much thought in the first place. However long it took, his first encounter with the city’s many elements was that of the criminal variety. A thug for the Hundred Families, that vast web of mobsters, murderers, and maniacs that make up the closest thing to an organized criminal organization, decided to take Carlos in as something resembling a pet. Sometimes keeping Carlos confined in their stuffy apartment, sometimes bringing him along for a heist, to burn through a vault, or, depending on their mood, people’s faces. Carlos didn’t seem to mind, and over time, he got a taste for it. It wasn’t long before he got a taste of his owner, in every sense of the word.
Carlos wasn’t sure what it was, but upon enlightening himself upon the man’s remains, he felt himself subsuming the identity that was suddenly vacant, from his laissez-faire fashion sense all the way down to his title: Cleaner Joe. CJ sounded much better. Not that much changed for the Cleaner after that: he continued his service to the Hundred Families: fixing screw-ups that needed to be covered up, taking care of evidence that shouldn’t have existed in the first place, playing janitor around one hideout or the other, and getting paid pretty handsomely for it too. CJ has settled into the life of a vicious, amoral criminal the same way that you might adjust to a new job, going through the motions of what gives him mild satisfaction. CJ may not know it yet, but it’s only a matter of time before the “big score” brings the Ectotasm enough satisfaction that he’ll be ready to move on for good.
Appearance
Profile:
Description: CJ’s innate form is that of an amorphous, bright-green blob, made entirely of ectoplasmic goo. Though he is rarely seen outside of his usual figure, when that is the case, he is a small, heavily concentrated mass, no smaller than a basketball. In his outfit, however, CJ is an extremely lanky fellow, standing well over six feet tall, and weighs at least two thousand pounds, whether he is “humanoid” or not. His attire is sleek and sinister, blatant in expressing his stature as a stylist gangster, from the flat-billed cap to the leather waistcoat, all the way down to his garishly large knee-high boots. More strangely, given that he is an Ectotasm, CJ’s ooze form contains a skeletal visage, and while he is humanoid, his arms and legs, when they are exposed, reveal skeletal appendages within them, which allow him to do just about anything that ordinary humans can do, Ectotasm traits notwithstanding.
Abilities
Gear
Motorcycle
Flip Phone
Abilities:
Career Criminal
CJ is no stranger to urban violence, nor is he unfamiliar with the savagery of gang life. Though he has been arrested on numerous occasions, CJ has held steadfast to a livelihood of preying on others, and more importantly, to the Hundred Families that has been his home for as long as he can remember. With this lifestyle comes a wide array of roguish skills, including but not limited to:
Infiltration
Pickpocketing
Intimidation
Hotwiring cars
Murder (both subtle and unsubtle)
Street fighting
Lockpicking
Vandalism
Getaway driving
Explosives
Ectotasm
CJ is a curious cat, and not just because of his aloof personality. As an Ectotasm, he is part ooze and part ghost, a hybrid of gelatinous acid and undying remnant that can’t quite cancel out the other.
The foremost aspect of being an Ectotasm is the fact that the primary layer of CJ’s being is a nigh unmovable, incredibly heavy, incredibly caustic jelly-like substance. Anyone who makes direct contact with CJ’s form is likely to have their skin melted off, and even their clothes and light armor. Sustained exposure can burn someone down to the bone, to the point where CJ “consumes” them by digesting their disintegrated remains into his bulbous form (This is his primary means of eliminating his enemies).
In addition to being a deceptively heavyset “man”, CJ’s weight makes him uncannily strong. He can bench press vehicles with ease, and may even throw them if he sees the need. Breaking through buildings isn’t much trouble for him either, and most attempts to waylay him physically have trouble holding him, either because of this strength and weight, or because he can simply revert to his gelatinous form to slip through restraints.
The undead part of CJ’s Ectotasmic existence means that he is not affected by things that would affect most forms of life, such as disease, fire, age, and targeting his vital organs (seeing how he has none). As an astrally inclined creature, CJ may will himself to phase through objects, and even possess someone’s body by inhabiting their “essence” with his Ectotasmic form. These abilities may only be performed in CJ’s original form, however, and given how much discomfort he has outside his humanoid form, he rarely does this.
Ectotasms are not without their weaknesses. As ghosts, they are vulnerable to everything that assails them, particularly methods designed for capturing or even destroying ghosts. Their acidic ooze forms are also vulnerable to the various methods that disposes of such substances, such as chemical bases, vacuums, diluted water, and adhesive surfaces. Even when CJ is walking around as a humanoid, he is vulnerable to all of these efforts, which he takes steps to try and avoid in his day-to-day life.
