(As a quick disclaimer, if you would like to have a role in this, be it as an active protagonist/antagonist or a third party, please DM me and we can discuss things from there. For now, only Lucky (and mods) are allowed to post in this thread.)
A lone patrol car made its way into the deep city suburbs. Though this was unmistakably Tokyo, it was one of the ritzier districts of the city, which meant that some of the more eccentric residences deviated from the pristine apartments and glamorous high rises that otherwise dominated Tokyo’s skyline. For Officer Jun, it made little difference. The day was overcast, and they were responding to a call about… Her eyes narrowed at the memory. It had to be something else. The woman on the line had sounded hysterical, after all.
“2000 yen says it’s an affair.”
Jun almost stopped the car. Kaneda was lucky they weren’t at an intersection. ”That’s a hell of a thing to say.”
Kaneda shrugged. ”Just callin’ it like I see it. This sort of thing always happens eventually. You know these types.” The tobacco was heavy on his breath. ”They think they’re untouchable, got all this power. One day they decide, “Hey, why can’t I do whatever I want? No one will mind if nobody knows, right?” And then, boom. Consequences.”
Jun could hardly believe what he was hearing. Well, not entirely. Kaneda was the cynical prick between the two of them, but talk like that still made his stomach turn. ”That’s rich, coming from you.”
Kaneda shrugged. ”I know what I am. I don’t pretend to hide it like these people.”
Kaneda scowled. ”Listen to yourself. You’re talking about-”
”Yeah, yeah, I know. But it’s just one of them, and he’s not even in the Top Ten. They’ll live."
Jun could feel his teeth grinding. ”Fine. But you’re going to lose this bet.” Jun knew better than to get pulled into a drawn-out conversation with Kaneda over this. It was always the same song and dance. He would call it cliche, if she didn’t sound like such a damn broken record about it.
Eventually, they showed up at the place. It looked… nice. Really nice, actually. Plain, maybe, but it was clear some kind of celebrity lived here. The thing stuck out like a sore thumb. The maid was already waiting for them at the front door. Kaneda was already wearing that smug expression on her ruby lips. ”Don’t. Start."
Talking with the help… wasn’t. She was barely more coherent than she had been over the phone. Clearly whatever had her in such a state was inside, but she refused to go show them what it was. Jun tried not to roll his eyes. They were going to have to do this the hard way. They walked in…
…and there he was. What they could still recognize, anyway. You know, on account of him being a pulpy, bruised corpse.
Kaneda’s smugness melted into disgust. Jun held out his hand, which eventually got the money that he was owed. ”You had to be wrong sooner or later. Call it in.”
