The year two dorms... Having gathered enough grades, tests and attention from staff, Benkei was approved to join 2A. This also meant he had to move dorms and get closer to his new classmates. Maybe teachers didn't realize it..., but being the new kid SUCKED. It was a little bit easier in his first year. He'd spent the whole time with the management class. At the start of the second year, he was a newbie amongst the Gen ed. students in 2-C. Sure it was all in the gameplan he cooked up with Principal Terebii, but... he got promoted a lot faster than he thought! On the to do list were: training uniforms, costume submissions and modifications, provisional license test, and the most dreaded one... MOVING IN. Now all this had to be done in a few weeks time. In a joke, Benkei proclaimed to Terebii, he'd become a hero department student before the sports festival, but it actually ended up happening! Was it an achievement or oversight? It felt like both, as he was the newbie of the class yet again.
On the to do list, he got a fair amount done. In a laundry sack was the new gym uniform, and even his second iteration of his costume. That R&D team sure worked fast. All he had to do was move in, and then begin prep to grab his provisional license. There were probably other kids who already had them. Was it lame to get it so late? All this thinking he was doing... He hadn't moved from the dorm's common room. Room 215a, that's what the key said. Where even was that hall? With a bewildered expression, he stared at the key with his luggage at his sides. To be honest, the kid looked strong but equally helpless. He'd obviously been around, but likely seemed like a background character until now... Tch, the hero department gathered too much attention. They were basically the celebrities of the school. Maybe that's why he had to start in 1-J. To understand hero culture at its core, and how agencies were run before ever touching a cape. He'd have to thank Terebii later. He felt lucky to have crossed paths with such a man.
"Umm...." He'd find a stranger to ask for help. He wasn't really all that prideful to pretend like he knew what he was doing. "Hi." He towered over her. She held a tense expression, and he remembered seeing her in the sports festival. Nocturne would talk about her all the time. "Serena?" This was awkward as hell. He knew of her, but never introduced himself. With some more thought... realistically Yoo should have introduced the two. Actually... hadn't she just quit the agency? Yoo seemed pretty torn up about it, and yet she was the only classmate present. This was awkward as hell!!!
With a smile and a waving gesture, he- "I'm not sure you know me, but I'm Benkei Yozora from 2-C. After some hard work, they let me join your class. I-ugh don't know what I'm doing or where I'm going." Ah, good ol honesty. This would solve the problem... hopefully.

Serena had been chilling out in the dorm common area for a change, reading one of her less embarrassing books, just a regular fantasy romp. The fanfiction spawning from it was right up her trashy romance flick alley, but she could enjoy the original work out in public without revealing her shame... which made it perfect for her efforts to try and be somewhat more sociable. She'd always been pretty friendly to her classmates, but she also recognized she kept to herself too much. Half her class barely knew her despite her not actively being antisocial or anything.
Her habit of spending all her time either in her room, training, or out shopping for sweets probably didn't help. She didn't provide enough chances to interact with her... so here she was, just relaxing in a public space open to being approached... and to her great surprise it actually worked! Someone she didn't recognize at all came up to her, a new boy. Come to think of it she had heard someone new would be joining the class soon. Guess this was him.
"Yeah I'm Serena" she said as she bookmarked her page and put the book aside "so you're that rumored new classmate huh? Pleasure to meet you."
Serena examined the boy, he sure didn't carry himself like a former management student. Being from the streets, you learned to recognize certain things. This guy wasn't some inexperienced brat who only knew about fighting from what he'd learned in his textbooks. If anything his posture and vibe seemed closer to her own... which meant she wasn't going to pry. She knew better than anyone that hero students came from all kinds of backgrounds, not all of which they wanted to talk about. He wanted to introduce himself as just a 2-C transfer? She'd take that at face value for now.
"you're looking to move into your dorm room yeah? I can show you the way" Serena said as she got up and grabbed one of the biggest pieces of luggage from next to Benkei, lifting it up with one hand as effortlessly as she might a pillow. She hardly looked frail, with densely packed muscles clearly visible even at a glance, but her strength was clearly also not normal... if only because keeping a grip on a large object like that with one hand should've been impossible. "the layout of this place is pretty intuitive once you actually live here for a day or two. But I guess it's a bit overwhelming at first glance huh?"

"Ayup that's me. Though I thought I was going to class be. Lucky break!" He was feeling more relaxed now that he could get a feel of her personality. Ben adjusted ever so slightly. He didn't expect her to just manhandle his suitcase, quite the surprise. He chuckled in response. "It's a little intimidating, but I'm sure it'll work itself out. " Serena was absolutely correct on her assumption, but Benkei was rather upbeat. He could tell she'd been through a few things herself. They were scars on her arms. He could only assume there were more. With a pondering gaze, he mulled over what to say. He didn't like standing out too much, but it couldn't hurt to make a friend right? It'd make things easier when getting around the others. This Serena girl had to be popular... right?!?
Now that they got to the room, Benkei paused at the door. It was subtle, but he'd pray before unlocking the door and opening the room up. A nice big window, and a sizable bedroom. "Wooooah. Is everyone's room like this?" His eyes sparkled. There wasn't anything super special about the room, but at the same time it was his. That was amazing enough as is. Mama Bear's place had more spacious rooms, but he didn't want to agonize about how much money pro heroes made. The bed he'd shove against the wall to net him some more space. Speaking of space. He had plenty of posters of an American hero from Florida, The Rocket! There were some other posters too: some of Moonbeam, a single contraband Nocturne poster, and other famed nightly patrollers. The piece de resistance was a small figurine of The Rocket. It was rather expensive looking and actually held a project hidden in his visor. It would spit out a galaxy and stars right onto the ceiling. Compared to the other posters and items, it was clearly his prized possession. "And up goes The Rocket! Now it feels like home."
It didn't make much sense to put all of this up first, but the biggest suitcase was in the hands of Serena. The suitcase was interesting. It was many iterations of the school's uniform. There were cutouts and paint splatters on some blazers, some slacks that were turned into shorts, and some of the white shirts weren't so white. It was clear this kid had a passion for looking and feeling good. As long as it was within the bounds of what the kids were allowed, Benkei felt he was fine. He looked at her, then to his taste of well... everything. "Er... sorry. All the space stuff is probably super nerdy hahaha. I've been obsessed with The Rocket since a kid, even before another cool hero saved my life. I was supposed to move to Florida! Er... well before some.... stuff happened. " His mood died down a bit as he touched along the scar behind his ear. He was quick to recover, quickly pointing the conversation back toward Serena. He could tell her once they knew each other longer. Trauma dumping on a stranger was not the way to make friends...(OOC:little does he know LOL)
"Enough about me though. What it's been like being a Hero student? What made you want to come here?" He was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, practically wagging as he waited for an answer.

"yeah all the rooms are roughly like this, save for ones they modify to accommodate mutants. There's a guy I know in 3A whose room is larger because he's too big for normal rooms or furniture. So there's a little bit of variation for special cases. But for us every room is just about the same till we decorate." Serena said as she set the luggage down and set about unpacking. The amount of space themed stuff was perhaps slightly odd, but she had a custom built bookshelf that hid her trashy romance flicks behind more legitimate looking books and a secret panel, and that was just one of her hobbies that she was over the top about.
Seemed Benkei was a bit self-conscious about it though. She got that, she'd react similarly to the aforementioned romance shelf being uncovered after all. She also noted the touching of his ear, stuff huh? She could understand that
"It's fine, we all have our interests and hobbies. Nothing to be ashamed of, besides, if it's related to such an important event in your life then people would have to be real jerks to tease you over it." Serena said "as for why I wanted to come here... well. Stuff happened in my childhood, I came here to become the hero I needed back then, among other reasons. Let's leave it at that yeah? The whole story is a bit much for an icebreaker."
Serena smiled as she brushed aside the question as much as she could, she may have come to terms with a lot of aspects of her past. But she also was keenly aware that they were not pleasant conversation topics that should be dumped on a stranger. She could talk about it when there was a need, but there wasn't one here. So best to just skim past that subject matter
"as for what it's like... lots of studying and training mostly. Probably stuff you're used to, considering you were strong enough to transfer in here... just more than before I guess." Serena said

"Ooooh. I see." A fist to his palm figuring it out as she said it. It probably was common sense, but he hadn't put much thought into it. Cocking his head to the side as he listened to her, he couldn't help but smile. With a thankful nod, he chuckled when Serena's answers was just as vague as his. "Stuff, that's right." It felt nice to know he wasn't the only one. He was lucky, this was the first person he met. Perhaps being the new kid wouldn't be so bad. Studying? "Studying... well I just picked the answers that feel right and get lucky that's all. As for traininggggg~" He pondered. If he wasn't supposed to talk about his past, was he supposed to leave out Yoo too. Well now... Serena seemed to have unlocked a hidden memory. It was back in the Ryuujin dojo during his first year. He trained a lot. So did she... but how'd he know that?
He'd been training and a girl was there. Rouge seemed to like her, and Yoo talked to her more than most the other kids. This was mainly because she'd wiped the floor with have of the boys karate club. Like a dutiful background character, Benkei simply stayed in the background. So much for thinking Yoo hadn't introduced them. He'd introduced her to most of the different clubs within the dojo. "Mmmhmm, training." He repeated, trying his best to hide his realization. "Training, yup. Trai...ning. Traaai~~~ninggg~~~..." He was a shitty liar. Now that he knew that he'd met her before, this conversation felt odd. Fuck it. First thing that came to mind, he- "Did you know you beat up all my club mates?" He blurted out. "At Yoo's dojo?" The latter bit would probably make it make more sense. He couldn't lie if he wanted to. Though it's not they ever stood on opposite ends of the mat. Benkei was too advanced for most clubs in their age bracket and was told to just watch most bouts. Speaking of watched, another memory was unlocked. The last fight he witnessed of her, "You almost broke one kids arm, that one time. It was cool. "

Serena cocked an eyebrow as Benkei just syaing the word training over and over again. What in the hell was he up too... oh he was stalling. But why was he...
"Did you know you beat up all my club mates?"
Oh, OH. Benkei was part of one of those clubs huh? Which meant he had ties to... well this got a lot more awkward for her all of a sudden. Still that didn't mean she should respond differently, he was just a kid who happened to train at one of the dojos Nocturne brought her too. Nothing to worry about, she could handle this and not think about the swirling mass of complicated emotions she felt about the man in question now.
"You're a member of his dojo huh? Yeah I remember being brought there to test my skills out back when he didn't know how much training I actually had or needed." Serena said with a somewhat forced chuckle as she pushed the emotions down "your clubmates weren't unskilled, looking back after a year of training their techniques were polished. They just... didn't know how to really fight. Knowing how to throw a punch and knowing how to fight are two very different things. I knew the latter and they didn't is all. Do feel bad about the one kid though. He didn't deserve what I did to him, I just got carried away. Had less control of my temper back then.""

"You're a member of his dojo huh?"
"Something like that yes." He stared off into space. A god-awful liar, but he could keep his mouth shut for that part. Good job Benny-boy! He edge to her latter comments so he wouldn't word vomit any more unnecessary truths. "Haha, yeah the clubs are offered to kids all over Shizuoka, but I'd say they're more silver spoon-fed babies. THAT kid especially. There's no heart in their blows because they've never had to face a true attacker. Staff told me not to participate for the junior courses and sparingly participate in the adult courses. Most of my training is solo lessons with the instructors, Big Bro Ryuu included." Shit... it slipped out anyway. He didn't mean to reference Yoo so informally. A force of habit. Mmm... talking to her was hard. On the contrary, she felt very easy to open up to. While neither of them went into detail, he felt they were more similar than what met the eye. There were people from all walks of life in this school apparently. Unlike the cupcakes in management and the hero wannabes in Gen Ed., this hero student in front of him seemed to hold some realness to her. He couldn't wait to meet more hero students. From what he was gathering, his celebrity assumption was a million miles off the mark. A good sign!
"Sorry, ahem- Nocturne sensei." He corrects himself. It sounded incredibly artificial coming from him. Raising a hand in an apologetic manner, "Stuff." It had apparently been the buzzword. He was hoping she wouldn't ask. He was at risk of spilling all the beans because he'd finally met someone who gets it. "Anyways, if you ever need a sparring partner I'd be game." He said setting up his suit on a mannequin stand in the corner of the room. He was proud of it. A friend from the past had designed it keeping the kid's love for The Rocket in mind. It was just as functional as it was stylish. "Honestly, the thing I'm most nervous and excited for is a field mission... Actually... getting a little too ahead of myself. Gotta get licensed first." He'd lob another question. It was one only she could answer. "Are missions something you ever get used to? Or is it similar to what it's like from back then?"

Big brother Ryuu? Oh so that was the story huh? Serena knew of Nocturne's Yakuza roots of course, so that little slip tied it all together. Benkei hand waved if off with their little "Stuff" buzzword, and that was fine. She had all the information she needed anyway. Luckily her recent falling out with Nocturne didn't extend to those connected to him. She still liked his sidekicks and even still had some of their contact info, though she doubted she'd contact any of them barring a true crisis to avoid putting them between her and Noc. This new boy being related to Nocturne wasn't a black mark against him, at least for now.
"I'm sure we'll end up sparring at some point, you can find me down at the training grounds pretty often" Serena said "as for missions. There are some parts you get used to, you learn to think and act in a certain way, and eventually it all feels natural. You learn the job like any skillset, and once you've done it for real enough times it gets ingrained in you to an extent."
Serena paused, she'd learned so much from Nocturne, compared to a year ago her skills weren't even in the same order of magnitude largely because of him, and not just when it came to combat. That damn stoic idiot... she pushed it down again
"Some parts though, you never fully get used to, and I don't think we should. There's an emotional aspect to it that I think as heroes we're obligated to not detach ourselves from, lest we lose sight of what's really important." she said, while it wasn't intended at a shot at Nocturne, it definitely wasn't NOT a shot at him. "once you do some fieldwork and actually resolve some incidents, especially ones where civilians are involved, you'll start to see what I mean.

Benkei nodded excitedly at the mention of being on the training grounds. Sweet a place he could let loose a bit. He figured he had a long way. It was kind of hard to measure himself to others if he were always by himself. This would be a good chance of pace in more ways than one. He'd take it as an invite for later. As for her remarks... "I'll just have to see what habits are worth squashing and what are worth keeping. Heh... not saying that it'll be easy. " With a clenched fist, but hopeful expression. "I'll learn all about my own level soon enough when I experience classes with you guys. " He wasn't going to run away from this path. As for her comments about his cousin... He'd hold his breath. Perhaps it was fair for her to have this opinion. From Benkei's eyes, ...nevermind. He'd listen first before blurting an opinion out.
"Never get used to it, eh? Hmm..." Perhaps that was his flaw here. He grew up facing similar things to the very man under scrutiny right now. Both were desensitized to violence in its extremes, one a clan heir raised to be a killer, and one a lesser clan survivor witnessing relentless death. As two sides of the same coin, their senses were a bit dull to things like grief and how other people perceived death. In a way, they were both clueless to other people's pain on the subject, a hell of an achilles heel for a hero. One's past didn't make up their entirety, but it sure as hell made things harder to deal with and understand. Everyone had struggles to overcome, even people who'd been heroes for years. Whether he believed in what he'd say next or not was a mystery. "Somewhere along those lines, I'm sure you're right." A glum response, thinking of the last time he saw Yoo's expression, stoic bastard suffering all by himself... He'd say this not putting much fight up for Yoo or himself. He hated this feeling. It felt like he was running away from what he really wanted to say. He'd straighten up and just let the thought fly, "At the same time, there's no one size fits all rule to wearing a cape. I'm sure being used to some things can have its advantages, too, right?"
He felt his brain sputtering. At both their attempts of keeping the conversation light, they kept trickling into deeper subjects. He could see this girl becoming a friend. If he were lucky enough, she'd feel the same way. He'd finish his thought. "If someone could save a nobody like me, I've got to repay them 100 fold by living my life to the fullest. Their actions won't go in vain that way! The greatest good I could think of was becoming a hero. Now I've just got to find what kind of hero I want to be..." He was the honorable sort. Simultaneously, he was plain and refreshingly honest. "Or ugh... maybe that niche will find me. Not really sure how all this breaks down in practice. There's way more theory in other classes."

"You're right, there are definitely advantages to being able to detach yourself from the emotional side of things." Serena said, her expression becoming hard to read, a mixture of emotions swirling around "I can do it quite easily myself. It's... easier that way. Lots of things that are hard to handle become manageable, and you can do things you couldn't if you weren't detached. It's a state of mind that promises great benefits, but the costs of it add up. It's a trade, and the debt comes due eventually"
Serena fell quiet for a bit, closing her eyes and taking a few slow breaths. If Benkei were familiar with techniques used for managing panic attacks or PTSD symptoms, he might recognize that Serena was grounding herself. Something she'd said had stirred up something, and she was taking a moment to bring herself back to reality before it spiraled out of control.
When she was done, she gave a small forced smile "Stuff" she said simply. "As for what you said about someone saving you, and repaying them? I agree completely. There are people I'm striving to repay for just the same reason. They mean everything to me, and I want to be someone worthy of the kindness they showed me. So long as you hold onto that emotion, if nothing else, I think you'll turn out just fine."

Raising an eyebrow, the Yozora boy listened carefully. Ouch, he knew those patterns... They didn't hit so frequently, but he knew taking a load off would help. She'd probably need to take it easy! Benkei stacked the luggage up so Serena could have a space to sit. After he'd plop on his bed. Surveying the room he realized he hadn't calculated for guests. ~Maybe invest in some bean bags... How much was my allowance, again.~ He thought to himself. In a quick glance at his account, he flinched at the amount. He'd never seen that many zeroes in his entire life. Bless Nocturne, a kind soul he was. Tucking his phone back into his pocket, he'd reply in gest. "Yeah, stuff." He'd replied with a smile. He understood fully. She could take her time here.
"I think you're repaying them just fine. Being so kind to a stranger like me. You're doing plenty to live up to those who were kind to you. " He'd shoot her a thumbs up, a star twinkled from the gesture before dissolving back into dust. It's a trick he used to cheer some of his baby cousins up at Yoo's dojo. Serena was a full-fledged teenager, so Benkei wasn't exactly sure how well this tactic would work out. The words were genuine, at least. Best bet was to keep thing light-hearted. He'd go on to ask- "So..." In a playful manner, his eyes darted left to right as if she was gonna spill a major secret. "Is there anything I should look out for in this class? Like mean teachers, or kids to steer away from. I've had the pleasure of dealing with the most tame parts of this school, so I'm wondering is there any tips and tricks that come with this hero turf?"

Serena saw the star come from the thumbs up and smiled a bit, it mostly caught her by surprise "heh, that trick feels like it's something you'd see in an anime or cartoon. But thanks, it's good to hear that. You don't seem to be doing so bad yourself"
At the question of things to avoid, she mulled it over for a minute before answering. "Well, I can't think of anything as far as mean teachers. The nurse Brine can be a bit judge-y but I'm pretty sure his heart is in the right place, might just be resting bitch face for all I know. As for students, everyone here is unique in their own ways. The management and general studies course are probably less diverse in personality, but in the hero course you get people from all sorts of backgrounds. Case in point, us."
"There's Alain, my rival in class, his quirk is similar to mine in a lot of ways so we butt heads a lot, but it's all friendly competition. He's a total himbo and probably wouldn't even be mad I said that." Serena said as she went into some of the classmates she knew about "There's Atsushi, closest thing to a 'be careful of' I can think of, not cause he's a bad guy he's just got a severe case of foot in mouth syndrome sometimes. Very awkward. Good guy underneath it though, just gotta know how to navigate the awkwardness. Then we've got Mei, she's a mantis girl, very shy and quiet. Wanna get to know her better but it's been hard since I'm not usually the most social myself. Hal... do not touch him without permission, pretty sure he's some kinda neruodivergent. Not really close with him though. Same goes for Ryoken, who won the last sports festival, he's a very serious dude. I get the sense he's not a bad guy, I just haven't had reason to approach him for social stuff before."
Serena scratched her head a bit, trying to think of things to say about the classmates she hadn't mentioned, but she had nothing... so she moved on to some notable people she knew from other years "other bit of advice, there's a third year named Tanzo, big guy, can't miss him. I met him last year through some mutual acquaintances. If you're ever in a bind and need someone to help, he's the guy to seek out. Not gonna lie when I try to envision him I struggle not to replace him in my head with a giant teddy bear... and in 3B there's my girlfriend Lauren, who can and will kick your ass but is very sweet underneath" Serena said "and that's about what I got for notable people. There's some interesting underclassmen, but I haven't known them long enough to weigh in on em."

Ah so the twinkling thumbs up worked!? "Just my quirk. I can make stars. I think its why I gravitate to The Rocket and his space theme so much. Mayyyybe a little unoriginal, but, things will develop when I can get more experience and ideas. " He said glancing at his hero suit. It was well within the design language of the Kennedy Center Hero. Benkie knew this astronaut look wouldn't be forever, but he was going to invest into it fully until he could project his personality into a costume. Her explanation was more than he was expecting, and she said she supposedly wasn't that social. She had quite a list, with a girlfriend to boot. There must have been quite the social hierarchy amongst the celebr-hero course students. He had to stop thinking like that... he was one of them now. Clearly it was way different from the outside looking in. Seemingly the hero department was full of ambitious types, oddballs, and eccentrics. When he thought back on his prior classmates, it was pretty same-y across the board, "I wanna join the hero course," or "My business model will take any agency to the top", brainy and clever types as well. He did well enough to get good grades and made a few friends here and there. Benkei wasn't really sure how he'd stack up against all these new different personalities, but he hoped to make some cool people and friends along the way.
He checked his watch and sheepishly looked at Serena. Now... he wasn't sure whether to invite her or not, given the current relationship of those two. Probably not the best time. " I've... gotta head out soon and take a train to Shizuoka. Today's a dojo day, they're throwing me a little party for getting into 2a. " He stood up. He paused... "W-wanna come?"

Serena paused, as much as she was happy to make a new friend, and it would be fun to see the reactions of all the dojo students seeing her again after the whooping she gave them last time, Nocturne was probably going to be there. They couldn't avoid each other forever... but that didn't mean she ought to spoil the celebrations with their personal drama.
Eventually she shook her head "As much as I'd love to help celebrate, I think my being there might spoil the mood a little bit." she said "the fact I wasn't invited in the first place says more than enough about how welcome I am there now. I'm not about to stir that pot."

Aaaaah a no? Welp! It was worth a shot. He kind of expected an answer like this. He wouldn't let it bother him. "I guess you're right... I'll tell the guys the girl who kicked their asses is now my classmate. I'm sure they'll be begging for rematches.Hahaha." He'd smirk with another signature thumbs up. A star twinkled from his grin this time before dissolving. He'd throw a hat on, and throw his fighting uniform into his backpack. With a bit of thought, he made sure to briefly lend Serena his cell so they could exchange contacts. He'd skip this detail, but he wasn't coming back for the night. He'd be spending the night over there. He still had to get his credentials so a few nights passed curfew would fly under the radar... hopefully. He probably would break curfew a few times anyway, he was a night owl like his cousin.
He was taking stride toward the door, but something shoved into his brain. Instead, he'd just reassure her with something he knew of his cousin. "I do think you should check on him at least once. Once he considers you close, it's not something that will ever change no matter what terms you THINK you're on with each other. BUT this is none of my business." He cut himself short before bowing and lining his goodbye with a joke. "Thanks for all kindness you've shown today. Farewell, Serena-denka." She was supposedly the daughter figure of a greater clan. As a member of a lesser clan, he'd address her in high stature. They weren't related by blood but that's what made the joke all the more more funny for him. In due time, she'd get a more informal honorific like Yoo.
