General Information
Name: Asa Ogawa
Identity:
Going_Viral (Social media handle)
Deus Machina (Hacker Identity)
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Place of Origin: Yokohama City
Occupation: Cybersecurity expert (read--hacker and professional bug hunter)
Faction: Dark Haven Private Practice
Appearance
Visual Appearance:
Physical Appearance: Asa is, in most respects, an average-looking man: 5 foot 7; messy brown hair that sometimes drapes down over his ears; average build (albeit fit and athletic if one pays attention to details), lightly tanned skin tone from time spent outside. His fingers are long and flexible but not abnormally so. The only obviously unusual thing about his appearance that might draw attention to him in a crowd is his eyes having a red color instead of a more natural one.
Civilian Clothes: Asa is all about being casual and comfortable. Loose shirts, sweatpants, maybe a headband sometimes to hold his hair out of his eyes. He could care less about looking stylish, as long as the clothes are clean and comfortable, that's really all that's needed. Frequently he wears tinted glasses to obscure his eyes, helping retain more anonymity. Black fingerless gloves are a common sight on his hands, no matter the occasion.
Hero Outfit: What wins out over stylishness when it comes to super-powered activity, is practicality--almost everything Asa would wear in the field tends to be made of fabrics that harness either the body's movement, or heat, for generating electricity to help power the devices his quirk lets him turn into. Headband, tight shirt and jacket, tight pants. Surprisingly most of it is sturdy, standing up to rigorous physical activity, which is kind of a necessity when you wear something meant to harness movement as a means of power generation. Most of the fabric also has multiple tiny batteries woven into it so the electricity is not wasted when not being used. The only nod to style is the camo color pattern he has somehow taken a fancy to. The fabric is still comfortable enough that often he will just wear it under his more normal-looking civilian clothes, in order to keep generating electricity for when it is needed later. The only normal additions for field work would be a simple mask and face paint in the same color patterns, to obscure his civilian identity.
Though just in case, if he anticipates that he might need an unusually large amount of electricity for something, more than he'll be able to draw from his outfit or the enviornment he will be working in, he wears a backpack that contains a single much larger battery that he can tap into, which obviously needs recharging later if it sees any significant use.
Personality
Bad Habits: Asa tends to view the world through a lens of near pure logic, often failing to account for others' emotional states or the emotional impact words can have, which can lead to all sorts of wrong things said at just the wrong moments. Gifts given to those few friends he cares for tend far more to the practical, rather than the purely thoughtful.
Goal: Anyone who thinks they know him, would be shocked if he ever told them the truth of his motivations--to improve the world, leaving it, hopefully, in at least a little better state by the time he dies, than it was when he was born, though he'll settle for making the lives of those he cares about better, if nothing else. The problem would be (according to some) that he doesn't particularly care about the means used to do so, legal or illegal, moral or questionable ethics. Technology is and has always been a means to this end.
General Personality: A practical man, which he's been from a young age, Asa has always followed the logical course of action in pursuit of whatever his aims are at any given time, and still usually tends to. This is not to say he is emotionless, but it is safe to say his emotions are frequently muted compared to how others experience them, and when not muted, just controlled, subdued, not allowed to dictate his actions, unless it is leading to some new fascination that will occupy his time when it is not otherwise needed--or something that may prove useful later.
Conversely, he finds it fascinating to socialize with those who experience frequent strong emotions, it feels educational somehow even if he can't always grasp the reasons why they do things. Two of his few lingering fascinations, aside from this socializing or with technology both smart and otherwise, are logic puzzles, and reading mystery novels. He enjoys the challenge to his mind, to see how fast he can solve the puzzle or if he can solve the mystery before the fictional detective can. He usually judges how well-written the story is by whether he could solve it before the detective's reveal.
Personal Life
Mother: Shio Ogawa, alive
Quirk: Smart Device. Shapeshifting into small, common electrical items. The transformation when used is total.
Father: Kazuyuki Ogawa, alive
Quirk: Malleable Body. A different form of shapeshifting, more specifically just altering the shape and density of one body part at a time, never the whole body, literally molding arms or hands, or legs and feet, into the shapes and rigidity of shovels, hammers, levers, and other handy shapes to use around the home or on the job.
Siblings: Several. His parents are...uh, the very enthusiastically active sort. None of them got a combined quirk like he did, but they all inherited one or the other. All are still alive.
Extended family: None of particular note
History: From the beginning, Asa was never much of an emotional type. From the moment he was conscious and aware of his surroundings he was more about exploring it, figuring things out and seeing what was and was not possible. And what was possible was far more than most his age would think to even test, getting into things and places his parents never expected him to, to the point if there was something they absolutely didn't want him touching, something they absolutely wanted him to stay out of, they had to use locks that required muscle power to get through, because if it required puzzling through something, it would be unlocked in a jiffy the moment he took an interest.
As he got older, things like puzzle boxes and then Rubik's cubes quickly proved to lack the ability to challenge him and he moved on to solving puzzles involving codebreaking instead--but he also started taking in the teachings of his parents, processing them, and leaving some challenges alone if solving them would end up risking harm to someone else. He started focusing on tackling challenges that should ultimately not hurt anyone, or possibly even help if solved.
It started with first learning the ins and outs of computer technology and programming, then analyzing video games to send detailed reports of exploits to the game devs and how he would suggest fixing them. Later, when he realized these efforts were largely wasted, he started streaming to show others these exploits and forcing devs to fix them, which, despite what most would call a dry personality, ended up getting him enough of a following he started to earn a little money doing this. And while he realized he was good enough to make a living doing this, and other things like it.
From there, it seemed a natural step to start hunting bug bounties for a living. Companies, software developers, even security system designers, people like that were always looking to have their software and hardware tested, and there was nothing illegal about testing any of that when they had open bug bounties to encourage freelance hackers to test their systems for them. While making a living hunting bugs is generally impractical, Asa made it work with little worry for his future, at least when combined with his continued streaming efforts, which by now included a channel for tech and software tips, not just gaming secrets.
At least, little worry until one day a few years ago, when he stumbled across a dark secret in the files of a company whose servers he was testing. A Pharmeceutical company who was cutting corners and doing human tests on a new drug they were developing, without applying for the proper paperwork first. The side effects they were tracking were horrifying, to say the least, even to one such as him, and so, instead of reporting the bug like he normally would have, he did his best to expose them. Oh, he took steps to ensure that the posts he made on a major tech site were not traced back to him, but needless to say the company was not happy with their secrets being aired out like that, and though he had exposed illegal secrets that ultimately brought a major corruption ring down, he had done it in an illegal way himself.
From there on whenever he tested a company's software, if he found exploitable code, he always did a little digging around first before deciding whether to report the bug, or report them. Sometimes he did both, if the bug was big enough. Why not profit from the bug before exposing them? He saw no harm. He also started, on occasion, more aggressive investigations if he felt a particular entity was corrupt--it was easy enough to target the workers there with a harmless-looking e-mails with a bit of special malware inside the innocuous looking links. E-mail enough people at the company and someone would inevitably take the bait. He always took his time to be careful and methodical, however--he also coded a 'self-destruct' in the worms he sent, to fix any damage they did if his investigations turned up empty, and more importantly to his thinking, to make the worms delete themselves before they could unintentionally spread further than intended.
It was in this point of his life that he heard something interesting through the grapevine from several dark web contacts. One in particular that seemed to notice, every notable activity of his resulted in exposure of corruption and consequently, a reduction in human suffering. There was a place he might be interested in. And that was what led him to Dark Haven Private Practice.
He wasn't sure, at first, what to think, but his practicality let him quickly see the benefits, and his sense of ethics clearly strongly aligned with theirs. He liked Doctor Felix Carmichael's vision, and so, it was inevitable that he would slide into their ranks. Of course, he had ideas on how to beef up their digital and technological security, ideas that challenged his creative side to implement, and he got to work, his efforts soon earning him the spot of a department head in the organization.
Quirk
Name: Universal Device
Quirk Type: Transformer
Power: Asa can transform parts of his body into electronic devices and accessories, from smartphones both old and new, to computers (laptop or desktop alike), to power cords and circuitry. If it's manmade and runs on electricity, his body can form it. Equal matter conversion, however, means he cannot turn into anything that masses more than the body part or parts being converted, though if he makes the right parts he can connect to nearby machinery. This is not usually as efficient as being the full machine himself. Additionally, at least some part of his body needs to remain in base biological form at all times. He cannot ever be entirely, fully machine. Usually at least some part of his head is what he keeps as itself, though that is more preference--it does not have to be the head.
His body retains memories of things he more frequently transforms into in a manner similar to muscle memory in a normal person, making them quicker and easier to use with less stress on his body. The things he most often uses this for is smartphones, tablets, and laptops, and to a lesser extent, even desktop computers, as well as charging cords for each.
Supermoves:
Linked In!: Asa transforms into a battery, wiring, or power source of a piece of heavy machinery, allowing him to 'link' with the machine in question and use it as if it was part of himself. The specifics of what he can do with this move is highly dependent on what machinery is in the area, and he cannot transform any part of himself into anything else while using it, requiring him to de-link to do anything else.
Static Surge: Asa manifests multiple electrical weapons from his hands or limbs (generally the prongs from cattle prods or tasers, or a baton from each hand) and strikes with a flurry of blows to deliver many jolts to an opponent. This, understandably, uses up a lot of electricity very quickly.
Drawbacks:
Epilepsy: A consequence of his quirk means there's higher than normal amounts of electricity flowing through his body than the average person, even when not transformed. The epilepsy can be managed with medication thanks to his body being more resistant to electrocution, but the management is not perfect, as higher than usual stress levels, prolonged heavy use of his quirk, and/or stronger than anticipated jolts of electricity can quickly override the medication's benefits and produce seizures.
Software: His quirk can produce the hardware by default, but if the device in question needs software to run properly or even just run certain features, he has to program or download it in before he can use those features that depend on it. While the 'memory' side of his quirk can retain software for objects he's turned into before, he really hasn't used that for anything but the aforementioned phones, tablets, and computers. And even there he's only done it for specific models. Even just adapting to different models takes time, so he usually only adapts to these when he feels it may prove necessary in the near future.
Fighting Style: Asa is not typically a heavily aggressive fighter, preferring to plan ahead and prepare the field if there's a decent chance he'll be involved in a fight. When he was younger, he did train in Judo to deter bullies, and he has continued practicing it today as both a means of staying fit, and ensuring he is not defenseless if someone does physically confront him. Recently he has also begun incorporating electrical attacks into his style as well--cattle prods, tasers, batons, and other devices used to deliver an electric shock to a target.
Overall, he usually aims to incapacitate, though more for practical reasons than any reluctance to kill should it prove necessary.
