It had been a fairly restful few days since his adventure in faux New York. Strange had spent it recuperating somewhat, though it had only been a short time. Something about it had drained him, and he felt it everytime he moved through the artefact room. A new item lay there, a small orb no bigger than a snow globe, with a perfect replica of New York within. Well, nearly perfect. An extra shoe shop was in place of where the Sanctum should have been. Strange paused again as he passed, on a chilly morning on his routine walks. He stared at the globe, a dark frown on his features, tugging absently at his goatee. The cape around his neck fluttered, worried, but he didn't notice.
"Was I right, or... again, was I wrong? I keep making the same damn mistakes."

Intrusive feelings hung dearly in the air, and they wouldn't move, it was so insidious of this phenomenom to mask itself within its thoughts, for once, it would show courtesy.
"Strange", a voice called, from everywhere and nowhere. Was it Liberty? No, it wasn't Liberty, it didn't have the bravado of faux Joan' D'Arc behind it, but it was equally lofty, and echoed with the same divine intrusiveness. There was no sound, the wind didn't part, the wood didn't creak, Stephen would merely know that something was behind him. Should he turn around, he would find himself staring at a nauseating void once more, a depth of stars and constelations, flickering, dancing in a fantastic, violet void. Should he take in the larger picture, he could see this void, too, had a shape, that of a cloak that hung in the air, decorated with delicate ribbons that faded in and out as they too were part of this nothingness. This hollow thing floated one feet in the air and was two taller than the Sorcerer, and had no visible features, save for a round, white mask, pale eyes of cyan staring down from behind and above.
While the phenomenom had made itself present, it failed to introduce itself.

"There's not many that can enter the Sanctum without detection or consequence. A rare talent, though these days it seems to be less so, with the amount of uninvited guests I receive."
Strange spoke before he turned, slowly spinning to face the intruder. Slower still did he look up to take in this manifestation before him. He knew the voice somewhat, as recent as he had faced Lady Liberty within the faux New York. It wasn't the statue that faced him now, however.
"Being sought out out for revenge isn't new for me. I would call it a Tuesday afternoon chore. Still, it isn't often that someone with the skills and talents to sneak up on me like this does so without striking while I'm unawares. It makes a nice change."
He smiled his best charming smile, which was incredibly charming to say the least, and bowed his head slightly.
"We weren't formally introduced, of course. Doctor Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme. And who do I have the pleasure of addressing?"

The phenomenom didn't as much as tilt its...face at the Sorcerer's spiel, in fact, Strange wasn't even finished with it before it listlessly moved past him, in any tangible way as a void will. Its form tilted as its face descended to approach the globe, staring at it milimetrically close, tilting its head in curiosity. "He Is Here, And Not. He Is Far, But Close", it pondered out loud. It had no voice, in a traditional sense, so it was likely that it intended to share this train of thought with Strange. "He Is Shook, Struggling, Separated...", it ruminated, tilting its form to full height. Its gaze drifted upwards, a sort of thought miasma grazed Strange's mind, the phenomenom deliberated wordlessly, and out loud. "He Will Persevere, Of This I Am Certain", it concluded, a weight seemed to lift from the atmosphere.
The spectre turned its gaze towards Strange, making no more motion from where it 'stood'. "I Know Who You Are, Doctor Stephen. You Need Not Lie, You Are Displeased", it took his formalities rather literally.

Strange frowned as his monologue was ignored, watching the creature float past. His mind was whirring, even as he watched it interact with the globe. Was it talking about Jamie? Who else, really? So was this being the same as the one who had warped reality within faux New York, or perhaps an extension of it? He frowned, watching the strange being turn to face him.
"Jamie? I thought he'd be happy staying in his New York. He's not my prisoner, if that's what you're worried about. If you want to take him somewhere else..."
Strange shrugged, watching the blank, featureless face of this creature with keen eyes.
"The issue was the threat to this world. Faux New York was dangerous, and Jamie wasn't helpful in stopping it overlapping with this world... and, frankly, neither were you."
He tugged his goatee, his frown deepening.
"I would presume you are the 'space genie' Jamie spoke of, yes? You come here without malice, so far anyway. I'm not displeased, but I am curious. What do you want here?"

"He Has No Interest In Leaving"
The creature cut him off once more as Strange suggested taking Jamie with it, "This Containment Wasn't His Doing, But He Objects Not, Rather, He Realizes Not. Even If He Did, I Am Not Behooved To Intervene Further", it elaborated. The specter gave the slightest tilt as Strange explained what the 'issue' was, its only response was this ethereal, nagging feeling that it somehow shared with the Sorcerer. "It Explains Why I See Your Face, Distant And Muddled, In His Worries. It Reinforced His Distrust Of Power, And Paradoxically Birthed A Powerful Guardian To Combat It", it concluded, suggesting that 'Liberty' did not exist, or at least did not embody New York's Statue, up until Strange pushed Jamie to his limits.
"Jamie Referred To Me As A Space Monster. Make Of That What You Will", it elaborated, drifting back past Strange, its face was always pointed at him, despite its body swaying in its ghastly motion. "I Have No Wants. It Is You Who Want Me Here", it suggested, somehow, as it did, its shape seemed to become shorter, as a courtesy to be addressed, although equally as wide and encompassing. "Your Displeasures Are Manifold, I Am Not The Largest Of Them, But I Am One Regardless, In Spite Of Your Courtesy", it suggested, so it did understand the contest of pleasantries.

Strange cocked his head, a smile playing on his lips. His displeasure? What was this so-called space monster, and what did they want from him? He eyed the featureless mask, pondering his options. If this creature had been out for revenge, then they wouldn't be standing here. The Sanctum wouldn't have let them in so easily... or at least Strange hoped. So what could it be?
"My... displeasure. It extends beyond you, beyond Jamie and the other New York that threatened this one. So why has my displeasure brought you, a mysterious being from beyond the stars, to my door?"
He waved a hand at the snowglobe.
"Jamie is content by your reckoning. His universe is safe, not interacting with this one now. Was it not you within that city, trying to squash me? If not, what part do you play in this..."
Strange cocked his head again, grinning.
"I have yet to catch your name."

"My Origin Does Not Dictate That Which I Do".
The spirit seemed to be eloquent at dodging questions, or rather, at getting rather stuck with wording, its cape undulated and rose to its right, as if waving vaguely towards the globe. "Whatever Spellcraft You Concocted Muddled My Perception. It Was This Phenomenom, Then Your Conondrums, That Intrigued Me", it was perhaps an unsatisfying answer, though it begged the question about why the much larger hole in space time wasn't as equally intruiging to this creature. The phantasm's visage tilted back, as if it were offended by the idea of doing such a thing. It wafted somewhat hurriedly towards the orb and leaned its form disturbingly close once more, not breaking eye contact with Strange. Mental miasma briefly muddled the scene before it straightened its form. "My Kindred Admits Attempting Such A Thing. Your Repulsion Is Reciprocated", it nonchallantly relayed the message, at the very least it answered what part it took in all of this.
"I Bother Not With A Name, But I Sense That Answer Is Unsatisfying To You", it suggested, as if it was unsatisfying only to Strange. "I Am That Which Mortals Desire"

"Desire, is it?"
Strange bowed his head slightly, the whites of his teeth showing as he grinned. At least this mysterious otherworldly being had manners, of sorts. Or, at least it wasn't smashing up the place. Plenty of creatures had come to his doorstep looking for revenge, or glory, or just because they disliked him. Strange found Desire a welcome change.
"So your... kin. They don't want Jamie back, or anything like that? Curious. They attempted this whole endeavour, threatened my world, and now just... don't care? You can see my fascination, ans perhaps my concern that they would try again."
Strange glanced again at the orb, with the tiny New York just visible within. He closed his eyes for a moment.
"And what you're saying is that you're here out of, what? Personal curiosity? My spells intruige you. Are you here to become my apprentice?"
Strange grinned again, but his eyes showed something else. He was feeling an edge to the situation. Perhaps it was paranoia, but space genies didn't usually just pop round for a chat and a cup of tea. Desire had come here for a reason. Whatever that was, it was hiding it behind vague statements and lackluster answers. Strange wished to get to the bottom of it, before anything had a chance to happen.

The creature made no discernible motion to being given a name, at the very least it wasn't filling the local headspace with white noise.
"You Are Trying To Unravel Machinations Where There Are None", Desire rebutted, with perhaps the most distant, faintest tone of condescension Strange had managed to squeeze out of the spirit yet. "My Kindred's Exists To Fulfill Jamie's Wish For Normalcy. It Did So Without Concern, Up Until The Chaos Of This City Reached A Point Where Causality Was Not A Sufficient Solution", it elaborated. Jamie described something like this, a slow burn where things slowly went more and more his way, until he didn't even notice he left New York. Given that that's done, it was unlikely that 'Liberty' attempted to break him out unless he somehow changed his mind. "My Kindred Exists To Fulfill Their Host's Wishes, By Any Means. I Cannot Make Such A Promise", she almost repeated herself, looking upwards dismissively as she admitted to havoc. In front of him, there was something worse than a dishonest genie; an honest, yet unscrupulous genie, and their children.
"I Am Merely Puzzled", Desire lowered its head and tilted horizontally towards Strange, staring at him from uncomfrotably close, given her non-euclidean complexion, she appeared as an undulating circle to nothingness. "You Are Among The Most Needing, Yet Least Deserving Of My Gifts. I Do Not Give To Those With The Power To Take". It suggested, somehow finding the most insulting manner of explaining that Strange was not in her agenda of poor dejected souls to trick into whatever it is that she does and caused Faux New York to exist. "At The Very Least, I Can See To Your Desire For Answers While I Remain Here", it suggested hollowly. Perhaps that was not all, but even though the spirit hasn't hesitated through this conversation, it was likely that it did not understand it herself.

"Trust me, Desire. Everyone is plotting, scheming, trying to get away with something in this world. I've been naive before. Now I just assume everyone wants something, no matter how politely they present themselves."
Strange moved passed Desire, his cape rustling in a non-existant breeze, perhaps agreeing with its master, or perhaps as a silent rebuttal to his pessimistic view. The wizard didn't seem to notice, as he walked and talked away from Jamie's globe, clearly not waiting to see if Desire would follow, but simply assuming that they would.
"Of course I'm among the most needing. My desires spread much further than any single mortal man. I desire peace, global, universal, even beyond the borders of those known dimension. That's a heavy toll on anyone's shoulders."
Strange paused, coming to a halt and spinning suddenly, turning to face Desire. A dark expression had crossed his face.
"And answers? Don't even get my started. Every question I ask simply seems to breed more. People retort my simple desire for knowledge. It seems that every good deed I try and achieve, every situation I attempt to understand, someone is there to push back."
Strange's foul mood seemed to pass, like an ocean storm moving onwards down the coast. He let out a forced laugh, shaking his head, tugging his goatee.
"Well, that was bottled up, huh? You didn't come here to listen to my personal problems, Desire. You have your own agenda."
He fixed her with another stare, trying to perceive whatever he could from the expressionless floating genie. It was as if something had dawned on Strange
"What do you mean, the power to take? What do you think I've taken that makes me so unworthy of your gifts?"

"Everyone Must Want Something. Such Is The Impetus Of Existence", the creature seemed offended to be questioned in its own domain. The Sorcerer would turn around and find the specter to be already in front of him again, albeit distant to give him the space to pace around. Was it swaying around in the air like a cartoon ghost as a formality? At the very least, it let him vent his frustation without interruption, although it didn't challenge his assertions about Desire concealing some form of ulterior motive, she considered that question already answered.
"Your Life Is A Patchwork Of Struggles Through Which You Have Persisted Peerlessly, And Have Been Rewarded For It. For Good And Ill, Your Grasp Is Never Far Behind From Your Ambitions, Lofty As They Are, There Is No Deficit That Needs Correction", Desire explained, a commendation? "There Are Those That Have Struggles As Much Through Their Upbringing, Perhaps Even More So, And Have Not Reaped Such Rewards. I Consider Fate My Adversary, I Am To Right The Imbalance Of The Present, To Preserve The Uncertainty Of The Future. Of This I Am Certain", she continued, apparently, shortsightedness was part of her very essence.
"If You Wish For An Answer As To Why I Yet Remain Here, It Is Because I Now Foresee Having To Make A Decision, Surrounding You, Stephen Strange"

"Thanks, I guess?"
Strange considered taking the comment poorly, but this being seemed to speak very plainly, direct and to the point. And besides, was it wrong? When he had lost the perfect hands that had made him into perhaps the world's best surgeon, Stephen had done everything in his power to get them back. When that lead to him becoming a Sorcerer, he had done everything he could to become the best of them. Against Nightmare, Enchantress, and the countless other beings that had opposed him, Strange had overcome them all, reaching for his desire to protect the world and be the guardian that humanity needed.
Desire's clarification made his expression darken again.
"Is that right? Do I get a say in this affair? I'm not looking to have more people, from this world or beyond, making choices for me anymore. Do you make all the decisions for this balancing act? What makes someone like Jamie worthy of you and your kin's help, but someone else falls into the churches of fate?"
Strange stopped, squeezing his eyes shut and rubbing his temples.
"Sorry. Sorry! I've just heard that speech so many times that it gives me a headache. I'm sure you have the best intentions. I'm sure you and yours have been doing this gig for many centuries longer than I am. Please. Enlighten me, Desire. What do you foresee about me?"

"Fate Is A Force Of Nature. I Am Vast, But Singular In My Craft. My Inability To Keep Up Is Too A Frustration Of Mine", the Desire spoke as Strange caught his breath, her words amplifying whatever brief headache her vague allusion conjured. It speaks of being part of a kin, but she insists she is alone, so it is more akin to her being a progenitor rather than a member of a larger whole. "Despite Your Ambitions Outpacing Your Grasp, You Persevere, However, Given The Sheer Breadth Of Your Goal And The Heedlessness At Which You Chase It, It Is Inevitable That There Is A Time Where No Such Miracle Can Occur, That There Is A Deficit. Such A Breach Would Elicit My Grandest Work, And Yet, To Assist You Would Be To Concede To Fate", Desire suggested, the visage behind her blank mask briefly losing its ghastly dim. The cosmic whole splintered, or rather, a split in its cloak could finally be discerned. A pitch black hand emerged, then a second one, both palms facing each other, sickly and witch-like in their appearance, and yet in their grasp, a form could barely be discerned, it was a porcelain mask, at first, featureless, but slowly its features seemed to blur into reality, and it was now the face of the Sorcerer Supreme itself, or rather, it was clearly its base, as more features appeared and disappeared, the spirit's indecision and hesitation laid bare.
"You Need Not Fret. In The End, The Decision Will Be Yours"

"Well."
Strange cocked his head, staring at his own face, perfectly recreated in Desire's strange, dark hands. He looked up at their blank mask, frowning.
"I guess that's good. Knowing I have a choice takes the weight off a bit. Tell me, do you ever say what you mean? Or is it all riddles and dodging around the point with you?"
Strange smiled, showing it to be a good natured point, though if Desire understood sarcasm, it wasn't totally clear yet. He beckoned them to follow once more, leading them into a cosy, compact little living room. Strange took a seat on an old armchair, waving a drink into existence. He looked at the being before him, tugging at his goatee again. Strange wished to know far more about this being than what they were letting on. They spoke of kin, of creating desires and grand works, yet he felt like he knew nothing of what was to come. Strange drank whatever was within his mug, motioning towards the other chair, as if Desire taking a seat would make all of this perfectly normal.
"Do you drink? Eat? Do anything but float and make replicas of people's heads? Indulge me, Desire, for a while at least. You interest me, as much as I interest you. Can you share some more about yourself?"
