Strange narrowed his eyes as Sun Nao made a passing comment about the front door. It wouldn't be the first time. He was starting to feel like he was being tormented, as if he had never left the Other New York. Maybe it was his eternal punishment to be tried and tested by the residence of the Sanctum.
"Sun Nao shows amazing aptitude for magic. Of course, he wasn't exactly new to it when he came to me, but his grasp of more advanced spells is incredible. Just don't tell him that, it'll go to his already impressively sized head."
Strange winked at Sun Nao, then focused on the book he was subtly trying to hide. He didn't want to stifle the boy's incredible curiosity and hunger for knowledge, but he also wanted to make sure he was pacing himself. Strange didn't want Sun Nao to consume too much... in case he turned out too much like him.
"James is visiting to see the library. You seem to have got yourself familiar with the books. Why don't you join us, kid?"

Kingston eyed Sun Nao's hand before sniffing the air, and giving a look to James who shrugged. The look didn't seem to be asking permission, but more if this was actually happening. Kingston's paw came up into Sun Nao's hand, shaking it. Once the awkward handshake was over, Kingston returned to James's side. James looked Sun Nao in the eyes and said,"No, we haven't met before. You probably saw or heard about one of my performances." It wasn't entirely a lie. They had never met before. James knew the truth though. Sun Nao didn't need to know though. Neither did Strange. The library of the Sanctum would be a good place for him to do research though. There were bound to be tomes here on Oracles and Prophets throughout the ages. It was hard to find books on them while separating facts from myths. James nodded at Strange's assessment of Sun Nao's potential and raw capabilities. James wasn't surprised to hear that. He would have been more surprised if the opposite had been true. Demigod's powers rarely lay dormant, and once they were awakened they had a tendency to escalate rapidly. James simply commented,"That sounds impressive. What magics do you specialize in?" James could guess the answer to that question, but understanding the capabilities of your allies was important. Aldo had made sure he understood that in the early days. It had had saved their lives in several fights.

Sun Nao stood back up after, in his mind, an awesome handshake.
He gave James a puzzled look, and his eyes remained on the man for a few more seconds before he shrugged. "Yeah, that might be it," he said. He was not entirely buying the explanation but also was not the kind of guy who made a habit of digging in other people's dirty laundry. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir."
"Yeah, my bàba focused more on teaching me meditation, breathing, and kicking the snot out of demons. Less on magic, so I decided to be more proactive and find my own teacher." Sun Nao commented, rolling his eyes slightly at Strange's description of his amazing aptitude, but he greatly appreciated the compliment. "He's not commented on it yet, which with my father can either be... "I don't care" or "I care a lot and just haven't found the best way to f-ck with you yet." My experience tells me it's the latter." He did say f-ck with because he was certain that Wukong was not one to hold a grudge; he was far too unnervingly chill for that.
He turned to James again and took a moment to mull over his question... what did he specialize in?
"That is a good question; if we're going by what the Doc has been teaching me, it's a little of this and a little of that. Elemental things, playing with portals, astral-y stuff, and these nifty circles." Sun Nao replied, gesturing into the air and creating a small magic circle, flicking his finger and sending a spiral of golden light across the room. "Personally, it's the flashiness I like, nothing like it to break the ice in any situation."
Sun Nao did notice that Strange was looking at the book, and he rolled his eyes and held up the book written in archaic Chinese.
"Yeah, I and the books are becoming rather close." He made a pause, "I had just noticed we had books by Laozi that I did not know he had written, so I got curious."

Strange watched the two become acquainted, and his mind began to wander. The old Darkwatch, the very first iteration that had stood together against Enchantress, had dissipated like dust in the wind. Oh, they were all busy, sure, and he heard from Madame Pru among others from time to time, but... he looked between the two before him. New blood, new members who had their own thoughts and desires. He thought of the others, the conflict they had encountered against the Justice League. Strange was the so-called leader of Darkwatch, but they were all independent. Free-thinkers, and that meant they had clashed. He tugged his goatee, absently. He wanted resolution, but what was the best way of doing so?
Strange snapped back as Sun Nao gave him a withering look, which he frowned at, an expression he had been getting a lot of use out of since the kid had come to the Sanctum. It felt like... well, it felt wrong, what the thoughts at the back of his mind were telling him. Sun Nao was young and innocent, James was a troubled man... he shook those thoughts away, yet another day of having to do so. Stay focused. Keep it at bay.
"Laozi didn't write that. At least, not the Laozi you know. That book is from a parallel dimension where he lived for an extra decade, and had time to write more."
Strange waved this off as if it was unimportant. He turned, motioning for the others to follow. The corridor split, weaving and turning at sharp intervals. At points it seemed like a maze, or a never-ending tunnel, but Strange traversed it like it was absolutely normal. To him, it was. They stopped at a door, a large grandiose affair, rising a good foot over them. Strange grasped the handle, then paused for a beat.
"Sun Nao, you know the drill. James... this obviously isn't an ordinary library. Usually the books will behave themselves while I'm here, but... just don't follow any weird voices, and try not to get sucked into any ancient looking tomes, okay?"
Strange looked back at James, and it was clear it wasn't a joke. He smirked anyway.
"Otherwise, feel free to browse. Welcome to the Library."

There was almost a visual mental hiccup when James was referred to as Sir... It made him feel incredibly old hearing that. Very few people referred to him as sir. Normally it was staff working on one of his shows that ever used it. Everyone else didn't bother to show him such respect. James didn't even catch as Sun Nao using the Chinese word for father, simply hearing the word translated into English. James gave Kingston a look before returning his gaze to Sun Nao and said,"Being proactive is a good choice. If you don't make a decision, someone else will make it for you." James didn't elaborate further on what he meant by that. James wasn't surprised to hear that Sun Nao preferred flashiness. It seemed the apple didn't fall far from the tree. He preferred a far more subtle approach to problem solving. It wasn't always possible. Sometimes a hammer was all the subtly you needed when push came to shove. Sun Nao didn't seem interested in knowing James's magical capabilities, so he simply didn't offer them up. He didn't like sharing his secrets, and if Sun Nao didn't care to know then there was no point burdening him with such knowledge. Knowledge was power after all. James eyed Strange at the mention of the book being from a parallel dimension. So someone had been playing with the multiverse. James signed at the thought. And they had the nerve to say he was dangerous.
James wasn't surprised by the hypocrisy. People had a tendency to fear what they couldn't control. It all ultimately stemmed back to their fear of the unknown. If you couldn't control something, then you couldn't know what it was going to do with guaranteed certainty. Free will was something people like that couldn't stand when they spiraled that far down the rabbit hole. As they entered library James looked around, taking in the massive room. His eyes stopped at the windows for a moment, noting the presence of the little owl that seemed to be there just at the corner of his vision. It seemed to vanish the moment his eyes tried to focus on it. It seemed Athena also liked a subtle touch. It seemed she wanted something in here, or simply wanted him to use this opportunity to learn more. If anyone agreed with the adage of knowledge is power, it would certainly be her. James was also certain that she was also very intentionally manifesting the visual hallucination in such a subtle manner to avoid triggering the wards guarding this place thus drawing attention she likely didn't want. She was as bound by rules as the entity referred to as God. James took Strange's warning to heart, but couldn't stop himself from making the comment,"Oh, don't worry about me doc. I've gotten very good ignoring the voices in my head over the years," before walking into the library. Kingston at his side, James began scanning the tomes and scrolls on the shelves. He might as well take advantage of the situation. He hadn't found anything concrete, but there had been no sign of anyone with his job position in some time. One of the Sorcerer Supremes had to have written something about it though, or found books written by others about it. James needed insight, even if he didn't feel particularly worthy of it.

"You don't say?" Sun Nao raised an eyebrow, flipping a few pages into the book as Doctor Strange discussed it. "Yeah, that tracks. I was certain I had read all his work, all the talk of the Way, how being and non-being create each other, the balance between opposites and the importance of yielding to the natural order." He paused, tucking the book under one arm before looking at the two older men.
"Very true," he replied to James. "Believe me, a few people would die to decide my choices for me. Might have been keen to let them, at least before- things happened. Bàba just likes to randomly kidnap me and force me to train for months at a time, and before I know it, I'm back, and my tea has not even grown cold. Try to explain to your friends how you could get ripped overnight." As he moved around, he spread the faint scent of peaches, which became more apparent after spending time in his company. "You'll love this place, and we have the museum of ice cream just around the corner; I'm still fairly certain that was why the Sanctum decided to be here. You got any favourite ice cream flavour?" There were more important things to discover about this guy than what spells he could sling.
Still, he could not shake the weird feeling he got from this guy. He smelled weird, and he had this odd aura...
"My advice is to be nice to the library. A happy library is a helpful library." Said Sun Nao sagely as his teacher showed them into the library. He stopped, and for a brief moment, his eyes lingered at the window... he furrowed his brow. He was unsure what he had just seen; it was gone too quickly for him to know. "Weird..." He shook his head, instead focusing on one of the shelves.

"The Library isn't entirely part of this dimension," Strange said, as if to answer James's unsaid question, "and the books can come and go from pretty much anywhere in space, time and beyond. Words have power, and aren't anchored by the same universal laws as the rest of us."
Strange paused as something moved in the corner of his vision. He didn't glance around, instead laying his eyes on James. A second or two, his eyes glinting with a curious expression. Then he turned his head away, listening to Sun Nao. It was a story he had heard a few times, of his father taking him away for long periods, but returning him without any time passing in this world. Strange was still alert to any signs that the Monkey King had taken offense to him training the boy. He'd have a thing or two to say to him, in any case.
"Interesting. I always think the opposite. Be nice to the library, in case it decides to trap you within a thousand year old book until you say sorry. They hold grudges for a long, long time."
That was the second time the Sorcerer had mentioned being trapped by a book. Was this from personal experience? Strange didn't clarify or deny, instead running his finger along a row of spines, until he stopped at a specific tome, gently pulling it from the shelf and checking the cover.
"Seventh Sons of Seventh Sons... It's odd, the books that the library suggests to you. Sometimes it's as simple as pulling a book out at random, sometimes you might be searching for centuries and never find what you need. Books wield as much magic as any man, drawing it from all across the cosmos and wrapping it up neatly in leather and paper. For all the knowledge I hold, it isn't a fraction of what these old pages have written on their faces."
Strange looked up at James with a light smirk on his face, placing the tome he had drawn out on a side table before moving on down the bookshelves again.
"Mint chocolate, kid. Next time you break my front door, you might at least bring me some to apologise."

Sun Nao's admission that there were people who very actively control his decisions didn't surprise James. The power a demigod possessed was a temptation for many. Ironically James didn't find himself very tempted. What was the power of a demigod when you could tap the source? Probably a far wiser choice. Tapping into the power of the divine or other powerful entities was like tossing yourself into an extremely violent hurricane. James's hand went to the book shelf, his finger running along the spine of one of the books as he said,"Being trapped in someone else's mind seems far worse of an experience, but perhaps that's just me." He followed up with no context to what he meant by that, though the implication seemed to be that he had experienced just that. It seemed they were perceptive, or Athena was loosing her touch. She wouldn't likely try to contact him again in such a manner, though he felt like he could hear her whisper on the air. It wasn't any louder than the other voices he heard. Perhaps it was something Strange had warned him about trying to trick him. None of them seemed new or different than usual. He chose to ignore it for now. James merely replied,"Seventh sons are a rare breed, even rarer for them to have a lineage of seventh sons. I'm surprised you have a book on them. It should be a fascinating read." James moved to the table, sitting down as he flipped open the book to begin reading it.

"And that is why the library likes me more than you, Doc," said Sun Nao with a grin. "It is as Terry Pratchett wrote, Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass, and on that simple equation rests the whole of L-space. I like to think he was right about it, that L-space is infinitely large and connects all libraries, everywhere and everywhen."
He looked to James, cocking an eyebrow at his mention of being trapped inside someone's mind.
"It would depend on what mind and how much I can mess with the person while trapped inside of there." He asked, tilting his head to the side. "I feel you're speaking from experience with that one, Mr James?"
Sun Nao crouched beside a shelf and randomly pulled out a book. "How to punch your divine dad in the face and get away with it. You're right, Doc, this place has everything." He casually opened the book and flipped through the pages but stopped at the mention of mint chocolate; he made a face. "That is such an... old person flavour." He paused... "Well, at least it is better than that anchovy ice cream Salem made in the kitchen last week."

"Yes, well, we can't all be as good as the orangutan librarian."
Strange folded his arms, narrowing his eyes at Sun Nao. Sometimes he spoke wisdom, sometimes it was like speaking to a kid his age. Sometimes, Sun Nao would say things that surprised and baffled even Strange. Same went for James, it seemed. Strange listened, but didn't comment further, letting the man have a read through the book on Sorcerous lineage.
"No wonder the freezer stinks of fish. An old person flavour? It's... no, a kid like you wouldn't understand."
Strange took a seat, a comfortable red leather chair that could have been brand new or hundreds of years old. He tugged his goatee as he watched the other two with a book each, eyes casting across the huge array of books and bookshelves. There was so much knowledge, and only one lifetime to read them in, if you subscribed to the normal linear timeline. Strange wondered if the library resonated with his paranoid mind. He had tried so hard to find something on Enchantress, among other things. The Library had rejected him for that.
"I can't imagine being trapped in a mind, though I could hazard an educated guess. There is more in common between our experience than I think you want to admit, James, but don't worry. You're in good company here. Dark Watch doesn't judge, or pry. Well, beyond what we need to, anyway."

James glanced up from his book responding,"Yes, I am. If you ever find yourself in that position, I advise you to be extremely careful. The psyche of a person can be as fragile as it is dangerous. Also, it's not a field trip. You will find out a lot of harsh truths about the person, how they view the world, and how they view you. The subconscious doesn't play around with all the lies and pretenses we use to get through the day." He remembered his journey into one of his past teammates minds even now. Harsh truths had a way of cutting deeper than a blade. James had learned a lot about himself during that journey, and about how people viewed him. The thought crossed his mind,"It would be so easy to siphon the power from such an experienced demigod. Perhaps that's what Athena wants." He doubted it though. If there was some great threat she wanted him to become more powerful to deal with, there were a dozen ways that wouldn't involve an inevitable confrontation with Sun Wukong or Dr. Strange. He felt a brief moment of annoyance that he was falling into old habits. He glanced at Dr. Strange and replied to Strange's reassurances,"Of course. Are there any looming threats I should be aware of?" He glanced at Kingston laying on the bench beside him, scratching his ear. This book had interesting information, but a lot of it was conjecture. It seemed there weren't many confirmed cases of what his family had done. He would need to study it more, and perhaps play with some of the more dangerous magical knowledge at his disposal. It didn't seem wise to do that despite Strange's reassurances. James didn't trust that he wasn't being carefully monitored.

"Yeah, that's fair", replied Sun Nao with a serious nod. "Still, he would have been convenient to have right about now..." He winked at his teacher with a grin. " And it's nice to know you have some nice taste in literature, Doc. Pratchett was always a favourite of mine."
Sun Nao rolled his eyes at Strange's comment about his inability to understand.
"I'm still 17, Doc, you're all old. I would joke about dinosaurs, but..." He paused momentarily as if a thought crossed his mind. His eyes turned to look at Doctor Strange, curiously peering at him for a few seconds before: "Do you think the dinosaurs could use magic?" asking the important questions here.
As for James, Sun Nao took in what he said with surprising care; he weighed the words in his mind a few moments before he replied.
"I imagine that must have been awful, just thinking of all the little white lies we give friends and family daily. How often we pretend to like someone we hate or pretend to be someone we are- not." He paused, and his eyes seemed to look off into the distance for a moment before he blinked and shook his head. "Well, perhaps we could all learn from our subconscious and just be a little more honest to others about what we feel about them."

Strange raised an eyebrow at Sun Nao's question. The son of a Monkey King living in a magical house being trained by a wizard in spellcraft. Of all the real, strange events happening to him, Sun Nao seemed incapable of imaging anything weird unless he saw it with his own eyes. He couldn't help but smirk. Strange admired that. The kid took everything at face value, but wouldn't let his imagination run wild. Strange had long ago stopped trying to halter his imagination. He knew that whatever he could dream of existed somewhere.
"Could be tricky to cast a spell with tiny arms, huh?"
He grinned, waving a hand and summoning a few drinks to the table. Something for all of them again, though deliberately avoiding anything alcoholic. Strange levelled a cool gaze on James as he sipped an expresso.
"There's always looming threats. Great cataclysmic events or powerful adversaries. Forces of nature and magic sweeping across the multiverse, threatening our world constantly. Specifically? Yes. A few we have on our radar. Enchantress wasn't the first, and certainly not the last. Her war on Earth spurred on more like her, who were dwelling in the shadows. Now they know there is a chance. Even with Dark Watch, the Justice League, Excalibur... I think we're on the cusp of something else."
Strange tugged at his goatee, frowning, staring at nothing in particular. The still air in the library seemed to dance in a sudden mild breeze, dust whirling and dancing around them.
"You've always got to be ready for the world to turn upside-down in our line of work."

At the mention of dinosaur magicians, James didn't look up from the book as he added in a very genuine tone,"I've heard from reliable sources that some of the greatest Magicians in the world are Blue Whales." He said it so matter-of-factly and without any of the tells associated with lying that it was difficult to tell if he was messing with them. He shrugged at Sun's comments about telling the truth. He wasn't about to be the one to break to the kid how much the truth was a double edged sword. He had always preferred a more obfuscated version of the truth. Misdirections and half truths were where he felt most comfortable. James glanced at the tea that had been summoned for him. He took a sip of it and said,"Ah yes... Enchantress. I know a couple people who were upset with how much money they lost because of that whole incident. They had bet I would be the one to reveal the Community to the public." He paused for a moment, taking another sip of tea,"She caused quiet the uproar from what I remember. Even with how good we got at blending in amongst them, it was just a matter of time considering the eclectic bunch we have within the Community." It was probably odd hearing James mention the Enchantress incident so casually, seeming to admit that he knew how much of a threat she was.
Despite that, he offered no assistance in dealing with her. He sighed and said,"I'm very used to being on call twenty-four seven. My previous boss required my assistance at the oddest of hours." It was a half-truth. Madame Xanadu did keep odd hours with her clientele, but James wasn't unused to getting woken up in the middle of the night for a random errand. He wished he had a better understanding of his connection with the gods, but this book had little to do with it. It covered the tendencies of Seventh Sons and Daughters having a tendency to being magically talented and usually displaying a rare and unique magical talent. Some talents mentioned magical warping, unique and interesting talents with building constructs in ways the he never would have thought possible, and contract nullification. Perhaps that was just his unique gift. He would have preferred anything else. Constantly being at the whim of beings who could be so completely alien in their thought process was a difficulty he would rather not have to deal with. He had to remind himself that it beat the alternatives. He could be completely powerless, working a nine to five, and at the whim of some asshole middle manager. At least things were always interested with his current bosses. He glanced at Strange and said,"Was there anywhere else you wished to show me? This book will take me some time to fully read, and I'd rather not preoccupy your time watching me read."

"Blue Whales?" Sun Nao found it challenging to imagine how a whale of any sort would cast magic... but then again, his father was a divine monkey born from a rock, so maybe he was the wrong person to judge? "Huh, how about that..." He sat with his legs crossed, leaning against the palm of his hand. "Maybe I should visit some Whales... maybe they can teach me something, just need to figure out how to talk to them."
He listened as Strange and James talked, and Enchantress came up; of course, he knew about the chaos she caused... but that had been before he awakened, so he had been very much unable to do anything at the time. "Yeah, that was pretty crazy; we're just happy we had Excalibur to fight her over at the other side of the great pond. I hear they did a number on her, which was not so bad, all things considered."
Sun Nao looked at Strange, furrowing his brow slightly...
"That's ominous of you to say, Doc." He commented, "But-- suppose it makes sense if Enchantress inspired others. We'll just have to give them a good old fashioned beating."
