January 16 C.E. 71 O.M.N.I. 8th Fleet, 13th Autonomous Corps “Valkyrie”
Brynhildr-class Experimental Battlecarrier “Brynhildr” - Briefing Room
Having returned from the earlier training exercise, Lieutenant Commander Richard Hertz looked over his assembled pilots with a smile. There was a mix of emotions arrayed before him, something that wasn't too surprising. Pilots were a prideful bunch, regardless of their backgrounds, and nothing could rankle them more than a test of their skill. The training exercise had gone more or less as he had expected but that would do little to assuage the spirits of those who had been "shot down". In the end he hoped that the experience would be a lesson for all of his people, something that would make them learn and become better for it.
Either way, the Valkyries had now been organized to his liking. The title of "Alpha Team" had been won by Nicolette Maluka, Bill Nigh, Chang Wei, and Marie Karnstein, the latter being the only member of their unit that had been taken out before the exercise had ended. Bravo Team, now made up of Noah Cameron, Ashley Cruz, Karl Hurst, and Rikuto Tsukuda had almost all been shot down before Richard himself had called the fight over. His second team was clearly smarting from their loss, not that he could really blame them, but he also knew there was no room for grudges if they were to help one another survive. They needed to work together, which meant acknowledging each other's faults.
"Alright," Richard finally said to break the silence in the room, pushing up from where he'd been leaning against the podium at the front of the room. "Who wants to tell me what went on out there? Thoughts? How about you first, Ensign Karnstein."

The newly minted “Alpha Team” may’ve come out on top but it sure didn’t feel like it, at least for the sole Moebius Zero pilot aboard the carrier. Marie hadn’t expected to run circles around the other team, now dubbed “Bravo”, but getting knocked out of the fight so early wasn’t in her forecast either. At the least she could’ve put on more of a show before her role ended in not so spectacular fashion. To say nothing of getting out done not just by the spacewoman (which she expected) but even the hotshot (which she hadn’t)…
"Who wants to tell me what went on out there? Thoughts? How about you first, Ensign Karnstein."
It’s High School all over again...
If it were at all possible, she would’ve just disappeared into the floor to avoid talking about her own performance, let alone anyone else’s after that mess. Unfortunately, all eyes were on her and the Commander didn’t seem the type to appreciate the wait. “Well, for one,” she began, trying her best to endure the sudden spotlight, “I’d say our coordination could use some serious work, especially when the odds aren’t in our favor. Alpha may’ve come out the winner but our formation nearly collapsed once I was eliminated…”

Richard smirked a bit at that reply, giving a nod of his head. It was good to see that Marie wouldn't simply blame her fellow pilots for what happened. A unit only lived if they could trust one another.
"That's certainly part of it. From my perspective, you relied too much on your fancy gunbarrels. They're unquestionably a dangerous weapon but that's precisely why I had my team focus on you. You made yourself stand out right away which made you the biggest threat."
He said this all rather matter-of-factly, as if it were plain to see. "Up against ZAFT, all of their mobile suits are equally as dangerous and, in general, are more than a match for our mobile armors. That being said, typically they operate in a much different style than they do. Often times their commanders take to the field in unique machines with color schemes that like to stand out for their men. It also makes them easy for us to pick out. Focus them down and you can quickly cut off the head of the snake.
Now, who wants to tell me where Bravo Team erred?"

Bill stewed as he attended the meeting. On one hand, he was satisfied that they had come out on top. On the other, their victory wasn't close to flawless. He wanted to blame a lack of coordination too, but he knew that was only a SINGLE part of the problem.
"That wasn't our only problem. Communication can only go so far. And being out numbered isn't an effective excuse. Tactics are what make numbers matter. You targeted the Lieutenant commander, knowing he was an ace as well. Colors aren't just for show after all.". Bill countered the man's words. "Instead, you should have pressured his wingmen, letting your teammate attempt to keep him off your tail. Focus fire or not, it's called 'divide and conquer' for a reason.".
As a skirmisher, Bill was aware that focus fire was deadly, but that's what made those who survived in such a situation in such a role all the more valuable. It meant they knew how to cause a divide and when to draw attention....
"Of course, I'm not flawless either. I disregarded rank, and suffered for it.... Took some unnecessary risks and hits.". He grunted, arms crossed as he looked at the Alpha squad's lead. She had apparently decided to use missiles as opposed to forcing her opponent to avoid direct fire. On paper, a normal pilot would take evasive manuvers, but the delay from locking on meant a window where her target could do something.
"As for y'all's mistakes, Ya boy over there took my challenge. Open comms are a risk, but you took the words. hook line an' sinker.". Bill smugly grinned at the first casualty of the skirmish. "Course you tried to give your wingman a chance to shoot me. Doesn't work that well when it's two on two. Course I got cocky myself."

Ltjg. Nicolette Maluka chimed in at that moment, "I have to disagree with the notion that Alpha Team lacked coordination. My subordinates executed my commands satisfactorily, and with immediate reaction times." Her tone and cadence were far stiffer than the other pilots may have previously heard from her, and her word choice and phrasing had become clinical, the topic of laying out one's own weaknesses never being an easy one, "Our problems lay in my misapplying the strengths and weaknesses of my pilots, which led to Ensigns Karnstein's and Nigh's taking unnecessary hits. If anything, it was commendable, the degree to which Ens. Nigh and Ens. Wei maintained their composure and quickly regrouped after Karnstein was eliminated."
Nicolette let out a short breath before adding, "I apologize, Commander. You asked about Bravo Team, but we're still on the subject of Alpha Team. I would rather let them appraise themselves first before making comments of my own."

The representative of the Republic of East Asia had remained stoic during the debriefing. However, she was by no means inattentive. Chang Wei had been lingering in the rear of Alpha Team, quietly absorbing the information from the Lieutenant-Commander, and then from her fellow teammates. Her expression remained level, keeping her thoughts to herself. It was an eclectic assortment of opinions in this review, to say the least. As of yet, she wasn't sure what to make of it.
“'Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air'.”
Chang gently pushed up her glasses. Her eyes moved to each of her teammates, going to LTJG Maluka last, and then to the Lieutenant Commander. "I agree with Lieutenant Junior Grade Maluka's assessment. It would not be proper to appraise them before they have the opportunity to do so for themselves."
It was clear from the look in Chang's eyes, however, that the Coordinator desperately wanted to make her opinions known, beyond the cryptic words of her initial response. She was sternly prudent with protocol and etiquette, after all.
