History
The origins of sans the skeleton are largely unknown. He is likely from somewhere on the surface, as one of his "selves" remarked that he "gave up trying to go back a long time ago", as well as that "getting to the surface doesn’t really appeal anymore either", implying that his home, wherever it was, came from the surface. There is also the fact that sans explains what the sun is as opposed to Papyrus when they go to the surface, the latter of whom who has never been there. What is certain is that sans is the older brother of Papyrus, and one day arrived with him in the Underground in Snowdin. The two skeleton brothers were assigned as sentries, to watch the borders for any Humans that might come along, and capture them so that they could bring their SOUL, the culmination of their being, to King Asgore Dreemurr of the Underground, who hoped to use Human SOULs to break the Barrier that Humans had cast in the aftermath of their war with the Monsters to shut off the Underground beneath Mt. Ebott from the surface world. Though Papyrus was fanatically eager to capture a Human and earn his way into the Royal Guard, sans seemed invested in other prospects, ones that he made sure to keep from his brother.
Through developments that remain unclear, sans came to be a research assistant to the Royal Scientist W.D. Gaster. Gaster had been tasked by Asgore to research the Barrier, and develop possible means to bypass it, if not outright destroy it. The first waves of these experiments revolved around magic and science in equal measure, eventually culminating in the grand construction of the CORE, which powered not only Gaster's demanding experiments in his lab in Hotland but the Underground as a whole. In addition to the CORE, sans helped develop many machines for Gaster, one of which, though broken, sans kept in his secret lab in the basement of his and Papyrus’ house, which was another well-kept secret from his brother. The two also turned their attention to more tangential fields of research, namely theories regarding quantum physics, and the existence of other timelines, just like theirs. sans came to understand time itself, and the existence of other timelines of his reality. However, he was much more concerned by the concept that a timeline could be altered, if not entirely reset, or so Gaster theorized. sans developed a crushing sense of fatalism from this train of thought, as nothing he or anyone did mattered in the end, since one day all of it could (or as he later realized, would) simply end, and start all over again, with no one else the wiser. Gaster on the other hand was quite motivated in attempting to go beyond understanding time, and to try and manipulate it, or at the very least, develop the ability to travel between timelines.
Unfortunately, little progress was made in these final projects of Gaster before a tragic accident in which the Royal Scientist fell into one of his creations, and was lost forever, along with his secrets. sans quickly buried his involvement in all of this and moved on, making sure that the only evidence was in Gaster’s Lab, which was eventually passed on to Alphys when she became the new Royal Scientist, and in sans’ basement, with other memorabilia of his past. Even after Gaster had passed, sans stayed on for a time to assist with Alphys' experiments that turned away from the treacherous field of time travel, and towards SOULs and Determination, as it appeared that a Human SOUL and a Monster SOUL were required to pass the barrier. In his remaining time working with Alphys, sans was privy to these experiments and their results… as well as their failures. Shortly into these experiments, sans took his leave, putting science behind him.
As sans settled back in at Snowdin with his brother, he began to wander the very edge of the outlying snowlands as his haunt, while his brother frequented everything in between with his zany puzzles. One day, sans happened upon the door to the Ruins, though as it had (as far as he knew) always been locked, he decided to use it for knock-knock jokes. To his surprise, one time someone, a kind old lady by the sound of things, responded on the other side, and found his jokes, terrible though they were, to be absolutely hilarious. The two hit it off, and sans would always come back to try out his jokes on the stranger, and eventually, she returned the favor. One day, the lady made a request of sans: to watch over and protect any human who came through the door. Though he normally hated making promises, sans accepted, not thinking much of Asgore’s ambitions to capture and reap the SOULs of Humans anyhow.
Not much else has happened since, something that sans is all too content with. Less work means more time to hang around with his cool brother and get up to a whole lot of nothing. Every now and then he checks up on that lady behind the door, and even Undyne and the new Royal Scientist too. It’s only a matter of time before the fun comes to an end.

Appearance
Image
* who's that handsome devil?
Physical Appearance
Being a skeleton, there isn’t much to sans’ physical features. He has a stout form, being around the same height as a human child (4 feet) though wider in shape. His head is decidedly round, much more circular than his brother, whose skull is more elongated and oval-like, sans’ eye sockets emit small orbs of light that act as his “eyes”, unable to be expressed in anything but a seemingly blank stare, accommodated by his beaming set of teeth. In the rare instances that sans becomes grim or threatening, these orbs of light disappear, leaving hauntingly empty eye sockets. In particularly dire situations, sans’ right eye disappears and his left eye glows a frightening light-blue or yellow, often alternating the two if he is using one of his powers, though these situations are extremely rare and have never been seen by anyone from his world.
* what do you mean? you can't tell by looking at me?
Clothing/Armor
sans doesn’t have any armor in the slightest. Rather, he wears casual clothing, and that’s about it. sans wears a simple white shirt over his torso, layered over by a stylish blue sweater-hoodie ringed with fluff around the collar to keep warm, even though he doesn’t actually need the extra warmth. Sometimes the inner fabric of the hoodie will be lined with ketchup when sans is feeling particularly morbid with his humor. sans wears black shorts, and wears comfortable slippers. Sans doesn’t wear anything else.
* what's wrong with being comfy?
Weapon(s)
* why would i need that?
Misc
Smartphone
* it's a smartphone. it does phone things, but smart. are you on the UnderNet? look me up. i'm Sanstorm.
Pranks
Broken Machine
* it's a broken machine. it doesn't work because it's broken. oh well. i keep it in my basement.
Personality
General Personality
sans is a skeleton that doesn't seem to care much about anything. Being laidback is what he does best, putting in the least amount possible, whenever possible. sans simply “goes with the flow”, more often than not using his laziness and effectiveness in doing nothing to deflect any questions or accusations made against him. sans is willing to let happen what will without much if any fuss, even if it's something bad. This isn't to say that Sans is not emotionless, or that he wouldn’t react to these things; simply that it is extremely, extremely unlikely that he would do something about things that happen, be they good or bad. You can bet that he’ll have plenty to say about whatever goes on, though, in his droll, relaxed, seemingly expressionless voice that he is known so well for. After all, making conversation is one of sans’ favorite pastimes.
Second only to sans’ lazy nature is his maddening penchant for jokes. Specifically bad jokes. If there's an opportunity for sans to pull a prank or make a pun, there’s little doubt he will seize it without any regrets. The main thing sans seems to love is making people laugh, and as annoyed as Papyrus and many of his friends get at his jokes sometimes, they love them all the same and appreciate the light-hearted mood his company brings. All of sans’ jokes are in good fun, and he will never put anyone down or potentially place someone in harm’s way, physically or emotionally, as the result of his humor.
Like most Monsters of the Underground, sans is in fact very friendly, and easy to get along with, especially given his mellow temperament. sans abhors violence, though in his case his unwillingness to fight is far stronger than other Monsters. He won't fight unless he absolutely has to, to protect his loved friends if there isn’t any other way, or if other terrible things would happen if he didn’t do something. And if you push him that far… you’re gonna have a bad time.
Though sans appears as if he doesn’t care, and is pretty content himself, what with how happy he makes those around him along with his brother, he is extremely complex. sans’ apathy and laziness is (or was) in truth depression and fatalism over the inevitability of his entire world and everything he loved in it being reset. The existence of so many different worlds, just as vulnerable to being altered or reshapen as the Underground is nearly as concerning as existence itself losing its meaning. Instead, sans now harbors a great fear of the unknown ahead that he continues to keep to himself. Though sans is still quite lazy and apathetic about things, he is much more attentive to what may or may not happen, though certainly still not proactive or making it apparent that he is concerned. sans just hopes that his lack of caring won’t lead to that smiling face from his nightmares.

- Good food, bad laughs, nice friends, recalibrating puzzles, making ‘dogs, his cool brother Papyrus, playing the trombone, crosswords, sleeping, ketchup.
- Putting in effort, people being unhappy, (talking) flowers, making promises, Junior Jumble, anomalies, murderers.
* i don't like that you like that. fry bits? c'mon, man.

Abilities
Skills
Weakling
* it's true. i'm the weakest Monster in the Underground. you could probably take me out with one hit.
Leftie
* i'm left-handed.
Poker Face
sans is a master at keeping his true feelings and thoughts hidden underneath his simplistic, lazy facade. One would not even begin to realize what sans truly knows, or how he feels about something unless he reveals it himself. Those who try to read sans’ mind would be rebuffed by his dry wit and an overwhelming psychic presence to back it up.
* i'm pretty good at poker.
'dog Salesman
* i'm something of a Vendor myself.
(Bad Comedian)
* what are you talking about? people love my jokes. hey, papyrus, come over here.
Intelligence
sans is extremely intelligent, and arguably the most intelligent (living) Monster in the entire Underground. Having worked under W.D. Gaster, the Royal Scientist preceding Alphys, sans understands not only the concept of space, time, and how they are connected, but also laws and theories regarding quantum physics and the existence of parallel timelines and universes. This allowed sans to be hyper-aware of alternate timelines that were unfolding, despite not being “in” them himself, as far as his sense of his own self was concerned. sans is also aware of other worlds, and has even traveled to them by way of his own special powers. Though sans has not built anything in all the years since he worked for Gaster, it stands to reason that he is a skilled engineer and capable of inventing extremely high-end machines if he ever set his mind to it. Devices capable of removing SOULs from a body, quantum devices, and high-end energy weapons are but a few examples of what sans has built and even helped design in the past. Of course, this hasn't helped him in fixing the broken machine in his lab, but y'know.
* i'm not that smart. i just pay attention.
Special Attack
* it's my Special Attack. it's nothing, really.
Magic
Judgment
sans can see directly into the SOUL of a being and judge its moral integrity, and whether it is being honest or not. This makes it impossible to lie to or deceive sans without him being aware of it. He can also tell if someone is evil or has malevolent intent, or whether they have committed evil, sinful acts, though this does not necessarily mean sans will know what they specifically did on this alone. If sans is familiar enough with a subject or that subject’s world, he may also be able to tell whether someone or something is the original version, a genuine copy, or a fake.
* ever play truth or dare?
Spatial Distortion
sans’ can subtly distort the dimensions of space around him. This is almost exclusively used for him to travel seamlessly through “shortcuts” from any two points he has visited before. sans cannot travel in this way to any place he hasn't visited before. This includes other worlds. He can take one another person with him in his “teleport”, so long as they are within close proximity (up to 10 feet). In combat, sans uses this personal distortion ability to easily “evade” attacks, simply no longer in the place that his enemy perceived him to be, before reverting to his original position. Prolonged use of his spatial manipulation in this way to dodge attacks can eventually tire sans out, however, or even fall asleep. sans’ more passive use of his spatial manipulation in combat is to “ignore” physics. How does sans have this ability? Or how does it even work, for that matter? … … … I dunno *shrug*
* what do you mean? i just got here.
Osteomancy
sans’ primary form of attack. Similar to his brother Papyrus, sans can generate magical bones in a wide variety of attacks, including but not limited to blitzing a target with a shrinking cage of bones, raising an area of bones where his target is (or will likely be) standing, and pinning a target between rising and falling pillars of magical bone. sans’ attacks are extremely frantic and often more complex than Papyrus' in how he attacks his opponent, rare as it is for sans to fight in the first place. sans may also force a SOUL to become blue during his attacks, though he is not required to hit the target with his bones to induce this effect, unlike his brother. Having one's SOUL turn blue causes their personal gravity to become greatly amplified, making it much more difficult for them to move through the air. This effect is represented by a cold, blue aura emanating from their body so long as the effect is maintained. Obviously, the blue effect will not affect anyone who does not have a SOUL. sans may combine many different forms of osteomancy into a single attack, though the number of attacks he chains together, and the frequency with which he does this, can tire him out.
* i can do stuff with bones. my brother is better at it, though.
KARMA
All of sans’ attacks use KARMA, inflicting an effect known as Karmic Retribution on the opponent when they are struck by any of his attacks. Karmic Retribution only applies to those whose SOULs are impure from committing sinful or evil acts, chiefly murder. Additional damage proportional to the weight and volume of their sins will affect the target’s SOUL via Karmic Retribution. This damage is not initially felt by the target, though becomes painfully evident several moments after they are hit. Karmic Retribution also hits the opponent directly at their SOUL, causing his otherwise weak attacks to deal damage to his opponents for every second his attacks make contact with them rather than glancing off after making contact. Karmic Retribution gives them an increasingly unnerving feeling as they continue to fight sans that will gradually drain their mental resolve as they are forced to experience the anguish that they inflicted on their victims the longer they fight him.
* are you a good person? of course you are. i was just messing with you.
SOUL Telekinesis
sans’ most formidable form of attack. Using his left arm, sans can directly affect the SOUL of his opponent, forcing it, and by extension, the physical form of the individual, in any cardinal direction (up, down, left, and right). While the SOUL is being held by sans' telekinesis, it turns blue. He can suspend the telekinetic effect, and thus dispel the visual effect, at any time, as well as reactivate the effect partway if he so desires. Whenever sans uses his telekinesis, his right eye socket becomes empty while his left “eye” glows a light blue and / or yellow, often rapidly alternating between the colors while he uses the telekinesis. There does not appear to be any weight or limit to what or how many sans can affect with his telekinesis, as he is directly affecting the target’s SOUL(s) rather than their physical form, though if the intended target does not have a SOUL, then this attack will not be able to affect them. If sans uses this attack too frequently, it will quickly tire him out, and far more quickly than his other attacks.
* ya got heart, kiddo.
Gaster Blasters
Ancient constructs originally created by W.D. Gaster, the previous Royal Scientist of the Monster Kingdom. sans can summon Gaster Blasters by temporarily pulling them out of the space-time continuum. These weapons resemble a robotic goat-dragon head, and fire a high-powered energy beam out of their maw before disappearing back into the ether. There are two different types of Gaster Blasters, Lesser and Greater. The former, while firing a narrower, weaker energy beam, can be summoned in greater frequency, whereas the latter Blasters are far more powerful at the cost of fewer summons.
* huh? no, i don't eat meat.

The glass doors slid open as the latest customer strolled in, at a rather leisurely pace. Given how… well, different he looked, everyone in the restaurant looked over at him with wide, horrified eyes. He didn’t seem bothered, though. Rather than get in line at the counter (which had already dispersed due to his presence), he instead made his way to the nearest empty booth. Though there were a few now empty booths thanks to their previous occupants clearing out in response to his arrival, he didn’t take their seats. That'd be rude.
Seeing that they had been kind enough to already set out his favorite food, he reached over the table and grabbed just what he had been hoping to find. Dangling the red bottle over his mouth, he squirted the juicy ketchup directly into his bony maw. Mmmmmm~ Everyone was staring still. Who could blame them. This was really good ketchup.
Some time later - the details weren’t important, since the customer couldn’t seem to recall them anyway - he sauntered up to the counter, satisfied with his meal. His teeth were positively crimson from it all. They didn’t seem to take to it too well, for some strange reason. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of money that the acne-ridden human at the register actually seemed satisfied with. With that, he left in a blink, as if he had never been there to begin with.
He really ought to tell Papyrus about this place. Tomorrow was Naco Night.
