[ Read Before Posting] Rules: 1. No turn order or player cap. You’re welcome to come and go as you please. 2. For ease of the thread, assume you are already in the class if your character would have been on time. (If they would have been late, feel free to write them coming in late.) 3. Each ‘Round’ starts with Roy’s post. From that point, there is a week for anyone interested to reply. Even if I only get one reply, the next round will start 7 days from the first round. If I run late, you are free to see that as a chance to reply for the current round. 4. You do not have to reply to everything the previous person said. Even if all you’ve got is 2-3 sentences to add in, feel free to post that.
Purpose: This is both a first introduction of Roy to the Champions and also a way for all of us to get a general vibe for how they will interact with each other. This thread will be Roy going over a hostage situation with the team and them gathering information on the situation through questions, forming a plan, and then watching the execution of the said plan. This will be through simulation.
If there is interest in it after the lesson, it can also become the kids asking Roy about himself and vice versa.
Additional: Training Room 8 is more or less a holodeck/huge simulation room. You can say your characters have interacted with it before or not. Up to you. In the depths of the Arc compound is a hallway. No markings signify it is any different than the other many door-lined hallways and it is not particularly long either. There is a single metal door at the end with a little plaque humbling declaring it as Training Room 8. This is the place mentioned in the text alert that went out to all the Champions earlier this morning. The training, the message states, is not mandatory and will be led by Arsenal. The only instruction beyond the location of the training room is a note to wear something comfortable. Training Room 8’s door would open even under the most gentle of touches and birdsong would be the first thing to slip through. A well-worn desire path trails from the open doorway, twisting around thick trucks of Beech and smaller Hickory trees. Sunlight trickles through the canopy far above as the forest gives way to a cliff bordered by a wooden fence. A man is perched on the upper railing of the fence, whittling a piece of wood with a pocket knife that was likely older than half the class. Blue eyes glance up from behind aviators at the group gathered on and around two picnic tables before checking the silver watch on his wrist. “ Alright, Champions,” the man starts with an oddly placed southern twang to his words. “ Code name is ‘Arsenal’, but you lucky lot can just call me ‘Roy.’ Today, we’re going to be running through training scenarios and the subject of the day is-” He pauses to point the tip of his knife at the sky and trees across the ravine from the group. A section of the scenery breaks as a white rectangle forms along the top of the trees. Bold black letters are printed across the board by an unseen hand, declaring ‘HOSTAGE SCENARIO #41.’ “ Not everything is all about fighting supervillains in the act or brawling with hostile aliens. Another part of the life is how you handle the more mundane situations. Collectively, our goal is always to help as many people as we can and we are going to go over the best way to handle hostage situations today.” Another flake of wood drifts from his carving to the floor, calloused hands turning it over as Roy looks back up at the Champions. “ Since this is our first meeting, we’ll be going at a steady pace. The information for the simulation is already programmed into the system. You lot will ask questions to gather information. Once that is done, we will go over the best course of action and then run the plan.” Roy says all of this in a calm and steady tone, keeping the group in his eyesight and not giving much away as to his thoughts on it all. “ The information you start with is this: Kit is the name of our hostage. They're the child of a wealthy and prestigious family. The kidnappers are demanding money and a getaway vehicle. They are held up in a 2 story, abandoned office building. First objective is to rescue Kit. Second objective is to apprehend the kidnappers." It is a simple enough scenario and is more meant to judge where the Champions are in their ability to analyze and plan. Roy's hands never stop as he talks, twisting his knife as needed. As if he's done this a hundred times before. " Assume that this is a best-case scenario and that you have everything to get the answers to your questions. Ask as the questions come to you. No turn order." He won't tell them there are no wrong answers because there are always going to be wrong answers and bad questions. Roy isn't here to judge, thankfully. He's here to help. " What are you looking into first?”

Weld had been very curious when he got the message: non-mandatory training with Arsenal? It was not like he had anything better to do. He'd been getting help to fix the old jukebox he found on a mission... so it was almost working now. He had taken a moment to look at his clothes, something comfortable? Shorts and a tank top must surely count as comfortable. Yeah, it was would have to do, and after collecting his headset and turning off the stereo, he ventured out of his room.
Like always, Weld's presence came first in the form of his heavy steps; he stopped for a moment to check if it was the right room, Training Room 8, before opening the door and walking into a forest.
Very curious...
Weld watched the man on the fence and listened as he introduced himself. A hostage situation? Well... he was always game for something. He tried to put everything together in his mind.
"Well, I think knowing who we are up against would be good to look into." Said Weld; he felt it could be essential to know who was behind the crime before going into anything. " Would it be possible to find out anything about the kidnappers beforehand? Are they regular people, maffia, or supervillains? I mean, if we're dealing with just random kidnappers, that would be very different from if it was someone with powers or a big reputation."

Kyle found it oddly specific to insist wearing something comfortable, as if someone would opt in on the alternative.
He used to not be able to fulfill this request, though Robot has been very kind in providing him with clothing his size and shape, and the bright, warm colors are quite good at absorbing sunlight. The pale khakis and plaid green and brown shirt meshed well with the sudden shift to an apparent outdoors, though he calculated it wasn't actually outdoors, perhaps it was something more to his reptile box, something to emulate the outside that he was never really familiar with, but still felt like home in spite of that. It was a warm way to start the day, Kyle approached the center with a calm, long stride.
Kyle had not met this man, nor could he divulge anything out of him, other than some far-fetched familiarity with westerns making him divine the why of the outdoor-ness. His head snapped to the right as the horizon parted ways to show him words. Somehow, he was drawn more to the amount of times this 'scenario' had happened than the actual subject at hand. As Roy suggested that he was going to learn today, Kyle reached for his pocked for what appeared to be a notebook, with some additional doodads like a clasp, a bookmark, a pen pocket, and a very reinforced cover, probably even a smidgen too large for the average student, but about pocket-sized for the large lizard. Margaret did teach him how to type, it was what she did the most after all, and what most people do these days, but watching the tiny lizard stare in curiosity at some old teaching material lodged in the back rooms urged her to elaborate on the old fashioned way as well. Kyle got to zealously taking notes, stopping to briefly stare at Weld's own suggestions, before thoroughly scratching some of them off and continuing to jot more down.

Non-mandatory training was like music to Gwen's ears. She had a lot of energy to burn, and other Spiders already had a lot of New York under web and key right now. She was dresses casual as well, in a generic band t-shirt and a hoodie, black leggings and her standard blue trainers that she wore even in uniform. One earphone was in as she continued her quest to find what music was like her own universe and what was different. She had two playlists on the go to differentiate the two. And she knew Roy, through her mentor, Black Canary. The two got on well, in a big brother-little sister kind of way, and she knew anything he had to teach would be worth listening to. Besides, she was working her way through getting to know the Champions. There were always more to meet. "The big guy's right. I reckon you want the intel beforehand, if you can get it. What if it's an old enemy that is trying to lure me into a trap? It's happened before," Gwen said with a wink to Weld, nudging him in the side with an elbow, "and that, ow, and that was a real mess of a situation."
Gwen paused, thinking, tapping her chin with two fingers as she delicately, unconsciously balanced on her toes. Something she did often when she was actually deep in thought. "I guess... how abandoned is this building? Is it seperate from anything else, or is it part of a block? If I can get in quietly through the roof, rather than showing up at the front door where they might have eyes, then that would be my initial plan, once I found out who I was up against."

Training. Sounded boring at first, but then she talked herself into to be more of a social gathering slash team building exercise. It was a good chance to show off... er. A good chance to learn from her teammates. She was currently slumming it in just a hoodie and some shorts as she stood near everyone else. Arsenal was proctoring this little exercise.
As the country sounding guy that just joined the team gave them a rundown of a scenario, hostage was a kid, badguys were in an office building. Leslie controlled her impulse to immediately blurt something ridiculous out and get 'that look' from everyone. It seemed like the current consensus was gathering intel, so she felt confident enough not to sound like an idiot. "Well... if its an office building, it might still have working security cameras, maybe someone left behind webcams or telecom stuff." Leslie said. Such a thing was easy for her to peek on people, at least if she wanted to do it quietly.

Suddenly, on Weld's other side, there was a familiarly startling presence. A short girl, clad completely in black spandex, looking up at Arsenal as he took in everyone's responses so far. It was time for hers.
"Need to keep them talking. Who talks?" Batgirl looked among her teammates, thinking. Tense scenarios like this called for multiple fronts. One such front was keeping the enemy occupied. Off-balance. A hostage negotiation needed someone to keep the ransomers busy while the rest of the team would move in. Batgirl knew that she was the last candidate for the role. Her eyes eventually landed on Ghost-Spider. A smile pressed against the mouth of her cowl.

Kyle let out a soft squeak to earn the group's attention, pointing a vaguely open, pencil wielding palm towards Batgirl, as if suggesting to slow down for a moment. The query is to gather information, planning goes after that.
The lizard moved his hand back and groaned at his notes, thinking through if he hadn't thought of something. Feeling satisfied with what he had figured out, he closed his notebook and carefully handed it over to Weld, or well, to the group in general, it's just who was closer to him. The notebook was bookmarked for his convenience, and would open to a page of very delicate caligraphy, next to the crudest drawing of a two story building anyone in the team has likely seen in recent memory. Next to it was a bunch of stick figures of the assembled team, their heads were detailed enough to tell who was who, somehow.
>Powers/Weapons/Things of the Bad Guys (: >Office Blueprints >Time Bad Guys have been at building >Location of Bad Guys at Loca >Where was Kid last seen >Time of day >Is it on TV with the Cops >Do we have the $ / Car
Kyle looked at them expectantly with pencil in hand, expecting feedback.

Roy tries not to be impressed by the direction their collective questions have gone. A part of him had expected a few more people to question the point of the exercise or overall the point of not just swooping in. The Champions seem to have stable minds in their skulls, which is something Roy can work with. His gaze falls to the little figure he is whittling before darting over his shoulder at the board. The more observant Champions may see the slight smirk he wears.
On the board in the sky, information starts to form and Roy narrates it.
"Our opponent is Martin Sanchez. He's a known arms dealer and information states that he has no powers. The team he works with is a tight-knit group of low-tier goons. Good question, Weld. When possible, always know your opponent."
Roy glances between Weld and Gwen and tips his head in acknowledgment.
"For the location itself-" The other side of the ravine shimmers, shivers, and shifts into a street-side view. On the block are three buildings pushed side to side in traditional New York City fashion. The building on the corner is highlighted in yellow for a moment. "It's your standard city type. The left side shares a wall with the neighboring building and there is an alley in the back."
"For abandonment level, this whole block is more or less condemned due to a recent super-fight. Through some wiring on their end, the office building has power." Roy pauses for a moment, letting the information sink in, turning his knife in his hand. He looks directly at Gwen, "Yes, there is roof access, Casper."
"That leads to Sparky's question. There are cameras, however, the ones in the main hallways and the entire upper floor have been sprayed over. Audio is still leaking through." Purple circles light up on the map of the building, showing where the cameras are with black X's for the blacked-out ones.
Roy glances at the book that Kyle shows the team, curious, but not enough to address it unless one of the Champions does. Having someone to write out the plan can be extremely useful in the right settings. He focuses his attention on the bat.
"Keeping them talking is always a good battle plan. Also, trying to come up with assignments for your team is good. Figuring out who would perform which roles best ahead of the situation is something I want all of you to work out. The last thing you need to do is struggle to figure out assignments in the field when each second could cost a life."
"Good job, Little Bat. Alright team, this is your information. Do you have enough to run the OP or do you have follow-up questions? Ask now or hold your peace."

Weld smiled a little at being referred to as "the big guy." He appreciated it when Gwen supported him and followed up with some ideas of her own. It would make sense; in their line of work, they were expected to have returning enemies; just looking at Superman's exploits was enough proof of that. "Sorry," he said to her; even if he did not harm her, it still felt polite after the nudge. Many seemed to forget he was solid metal... and he was too much of a boy scout to blame them for it.
"Well, if we're doing infiltration... I think I'm not the best for that job," he said after a brief pause, stomping his feet slightly, his weight causing the ground to vibrate slightly. "I'm not as good at this as Bat- Oh Jesus..." Weld had turned his head and found Batgirl, "You're going to be the death of me one of these days, Bats..." How could she be that good? What had the Bat showed her?!
"Anyhow, maybe I should do the talking? Unless you can figure out a way to get me inside without everyone noticing?" As much as he liked the action, it seemed dangerous, risking a kid's life. He could quickly enough get inside if push came to shove. "Bats and Spidey can get inside without being seen; Sparky can quickly get inside by the wires, and Kyle is not much of a talker." Something Weld had tried to do was keep in mind his ally's strengths, and in this group, most of them were exceptional at this sort of get-into-places thing.
Still, he did not have time to react further before Kyle handed him a notebook; he accepted it with a raised eyebrow, looked at the notes, and nodded before looking at Roy. "Let's see. Do we have office blueprints? How long have the criminals been inside the building? Where was the kid last seen? What time of day is it? Is this happening on TV, like... news." He paused, looking at the last point, "Do we have the $ / Car? What does that mean?"

Gwen caught Cass looking at her with a mischievous gaze when she mentioned about a talker, and stuck her tongue out. She crossed her arms as she listened. Not bad, team. They all had their strengths, and it seemed like it was all coming together.
"I guess Kyle means of we have the money amd the getaway ride, like the mean gangsters demanded. If we had something to dangle in front of them, they wouldn't notice when we're sneaking up behind them to give them a Hero Wedgie!"
Wedge had it all on the money, Gwen thought. They could easily take this from all angles, tapping into each other's skills like a dream team. She raised a hand, all fingers pointing up.
"We figure out the blueprint as we go" - one finger down - "and we be extra special careful in case they've spent time preparing traps" - a second, curling into her palm - "and the kid will be where they always are, which is right slap bang in the middle of the baddies. Night is preferable but I can work in the day just as easy" - and the last finger - "and the more news, the better. They'll be focused on the outside more than what's in. Sparky, Batsy and I take the back, Metal-abs and Kyle are the front, and POW!"
Gwen shot a light punch into Weld's stomach, immediately regretting it. She shook her hand out as she gave a confident wincing smile to the others.
"Kid saved - ouch - and kidnappers down and out."

Kyle inched forward in a hurry to get his notebook back to get through Roy's dictation, but quickly noticed that it wouldn't be necessary. He took the opportunity to righten his sleeves instead.
The lizard hummed in content as Weld did him the honors, though he gave a harsh blink as it appeared to not have gotten through completely. He moved his hand to request his notebook back and tapped it gently with his pen, letting out a contemplative thrum as to figure out how to better illustrate this. For a moment he got distracted by Gwen's boisterous elocution before going back to his book, just to shudder as she decided to...willingly bump into Weld, harder than the last time, he should inquire about this later with Roy.
Kyle inhaled through his mouth in a moment of revelation, quickly jotting down on his notebook, perhaps what he needn't wasn't more words. He would hand the book back to the first person to take the stand, and point an arrow from the TV sentence to the building scribble, now surrounded by even cruder drawings of cars and noise. Essentially, when the bad guys are surrounded, and the police let them know they're surrounded, they do brash things, that's what the police shows suggest, at least.

Roy's eyes glance between Weld and Gwen, hands pausing as he wonders if the Champions have assigned a team lead yet. If not, he may need to push Weld into the role during further exercises to see if he's compatible with it. So far, he's doing well in taking note of each teammate and even shows a knowledge of their skill sets. They already look to him for help and confirmation.
"You do have blueprints. It is your standard affair with office windows that do not open covering the front and side of the building. Two stories, no basement. One central staircase between the floors."
The image of the building shimmers before changing into a top-down view of the floorplan. The front door and back door on the first floor are circled in glowing purple along with the door at the top of the roof access.
"Sanchez and his men picked up Kit on their way home from school. They've been held up in the building for somewhere between 3 and 5 hours. Due to the damage to the area, none of the security cameras outside the building are functioning. It is currently 8:31 PM EST."
"As for the news, the first van has shown up and police are already working to rope off the area to prevent anyone getting too close. You know for certain that if you do not act soon, the news helicopters will show," Roy supplies easily enough. He won't explain to them why it would be important to dodge the News1 helicopters, expecting at least one of them to understand. It is nearly impossible to sneak into a building when you're being broadcast over live television.
Honestly, these guys are doing better than he expected and that gives Roy just a bit of faith in them. There are only a few things he would ask himself that haven’t been covered, but the plan could work with what they have so far. His expression is quiet and firm as he looks over the team.
“Your plan is for Weld and Kyle to distract while Casper, Little Bat, and Sparky sneak in for retrieval, is that correct? If so, what is your plan for getting in and getting to where Kit is located?” He sits up a bit straighter with a look at Kyle's notebook. "Also, any further intelligence gathering required?"

"Sheesh. News helicopters spells trouble. If the kidnappers are watching the channels for coverage, and trust me, they will be, then they'll have a 360 degree view of the building."
Gwen put a finger to her chin. Tactics wasn't a strong suit of hers, and she was used to crawling solo. She looked to Weld and Kyle, who both seemed to be the brains of the operation. "Well, you've got Sparky, who can get in as long as there's a power source, Batsy, who's a ninja, and me. Nothing can stop Casper from getting through walls. So getting in won't be a problem... And maybe we can use the news? If Kyle feeds the information to us while he watched the feed - hey, bud, can you do, like, morse code, or anything? You're a quiet guy, but that might be an advantage if we don't want the kidnappers seeing you two talking to anyone on the radio!"

Suddenly, Batgirl was no longer where she had been before. Whether by speed or by cunning, she was right up against the displayed blueprints of the building. Her eyes and body moved along with her attention, taking careful note of every detail. She pointed at the environment surrounding the building, then dragged her finger to the rooftop. She pointed at Ghost-Spider with her other hand. Then, she made a zig-zag movement from the bottom of the building to the top, then again from top to bottom. She pointed at Livewire. Then, Batgirl pointed to a rear entrance, then going from room to room, rafter to rafter, vent to vent, until her finger ended on an estimated position of the hostage. She pointed at herself with her other hand.
Traveling in groups was risky. It increased their chances of being spotted, and put too many eggs in a single effort. Multiple routes of ingress multiplied their chances of success against the enemy, and it played to their individual skills. Ghost-Spider's maneuverability was best for second-story work. It was very unlikely that the building was capable of completely cutting power to the building (and even if they were, it was unlikely that they would operate in the dark) - one way or another, Livewire could make her own way inside. Batgirl's approach was the most dangerous - and the most practiced. This was but one of many scenarios that she had been trained for.
Although, that left out Weld and Kyle. She looked at them, expectantly. How might they apply themselves?

Roy seemed to agree that the supposedly helpful arrival of law enforcement and news reporting would actually be a downside, wow, the television was correct for once. Margaret insisted it wasn't, more often than not.
Kyle resumed his note taking and nodded along with Gwen's quite expedient take of infiltrating the building, she could physically feel the lizard do a double take between her and his notes, staring at her through an uneven blink. He thought they had just established that letting the helicopter get here was a bad idea, was she really interested in letting that happen to allow him to simply sit back and look at the same things the bad guys were looking at? He gawked at the thought for a moment. It honestly sounded super agreeable, he could do that at home while cooking up the team's victory meal and all that, but something about that felt unsatisfying, he hadn't figured out what yet.
Batgirl was a bit more illustrative, literally, drawing Kyle's attention which he tried to jot down at her pace. She seemed to believe that all 3 of them could get to the top floor, and get to the hostage very quickly, which...didn't add up to the notes he had been taking. The lizard approached with a raised hand as he had a question, to which he held his notes for her to peruse, pointing at the drawing with all the team, and the drawing with 2 very angry stickmen and a sad kid, and also behind them were a bunch of other stickmen with a question mark, pointed at the crude sketch of the building, also with a question mark. Simply put, there were an unknown amount of bad guys, spread unevenly through the building. While Kyle has seen Spider-Man and Batman carry people out of buildings through the ceiling very often, and didn't doubt his friends could do the same, the bottom floor just being a complete unknown didn't feel good, for all they knew, Kit could be on the bottom floor, and not the top one. Kyle groaned as he tapped into a drawing of a crossed out camera, they didn't have visual, only audio, he wasn't sure how they were going to use that yet, but it felt important to him, specially since Gwen brought up the helicopter thing, it would be nice to use something the other guys don't have.
