Sleep is but a gateway into many worlds or so some books say. Dreams. Perhaps they are the visions of those that came before? Those that will be? Or perhaps they are the sights from someone parallel to our reality. The mystery remains to this very day. But most don't have time to dwell on such frivolities. They are too busy living in the present. The now. The moment. Enjoying life, as it were. Thinking about it is such a hassle. Why waste time thinking on philosophical quandaries when there is cake to be had? Snuggles to be greeted to? Companions to rely on?
The Dream Eater simply known as Calaguru was sound asleep next to its current companion, Lucille. It would be quiet for a good while until...something began to stir. Ah, but where there are dreams, so too will exist nightmares; visions meant to instill fear, anxiety, and unease. Such sights awaited Lucille this very moment. Only sights she would know and no one else for the time being until she awoke to tell the tale. Until that time, she was there. Alone to face whatever machination the nightmare was going to conjure for her.

Lucille would be sitting peacefully at family dinner, enjoying fresh veggies from her farm with her mother and father. They talk about mundane things, asking her about her grades at school, what book she was reading now, and other stuff like that. It was quiet, normal, familiar. She was filled with a sense of nostalgia and longing, but she couldn't understand why. It was like she missed this, but it's always been like this... Right?
But her normalcy would be shattered when from out of nowhere a large, inky black void opens up directly behind her parents. It spreads wider, opening up like the maw of a hungry beast as shadowy hands reach out and grab her parents. Lucille's eyes widen. "Mom! Dad!" She exclaims, standing from her seat. Her parents are dragged into the portal, but before it can close she runs after them and jumps in.
She is surrounded by darkness, with the only lights being her mother and father getting dragged away. She runs after them as fast as she can, but they only seem to get further and further. She gasps and pants, before stumbling over something and falling to her knees. She reaches out with a hand, tears streaming down her face. "Don't leave me!" But it was too late. Her parents disappear into the shadows, and she's all alone. She curls up into a ball, sobbing to herself. "Not again..." She says, becoming partially lucid as she realizes why this is all familiar. This is a nightmare she's had multiple times at this point, and yet no matter how many times it happens she is no less devastated.

Greeting Lucille after her tumultuous scene was something different. Something not any more comforting nor disconcerting than what she had come to expect from these nightmares. A deafening silence followed by the cool feeling of something below her that she laid upon. Violet in hues was a circular stained glass image that laid below her. The image depicted herself as she was; a large rendition of herself curled up with tears going down her face, focused on the right of the image. In a crescent cropping at the top was the image of a home with several blackened claws gripping at it. Below this, several smaller circles were off to the side with one featuring Calaguru's dopey face in the middle with a silhouette of a person behind them. Another circle was cut into a 3 portion pie that depicted Lightning, Cid, and Master Ignia. More circles existed but there was no one depicted in them. As if they were waiting to get filled in. Other patterns and the like also lined the image but nothing else stood out. At least, not to Lucille. Apart from this, she would be surrounded by nothing but a deep dark void. If she were to stand up, the stained glass images' surface proved to be quite wide but would not go very far. It, however, was her only source of light in this...eerily silent domain. And then the silence was broken. "Tragic...left alone...a peaceful memory...broken..." spoke an eloquent male voice which echoed briefly before the darkness engulfed it.

Lucille would sit there in her sorrow for a few moments before being shaken by the cold feeling of the stained glass. Opening her eyes, she glances around at the curious sight. A sense of foreboding falls over her as she stands, spotting the faces of various people she knows. She uses a hand to rub away some of her tears as she shivers. This entire place feels... Off. This isn't a regular dream. What is this place?
The sound of a man echoes out, causing her to crouch into a ready stance as she rapidly looks around for the source of the voice. "Wh-who are you?" She calls out. Out of habit she reaches for her sword, but it isn't there. Crap. Trying not to let her growing fear show, she straightens up and calls out again. "What do you want?"

As if on command, another circle starts to fill in as Lucille instinctively reaches for her sword but finds none. The image that fills in another circle was that of her most recent friend, Tsukiko. The next sounds that came from the darkness were not a voice but rather footsteps that approached at a steady gait. There was no way of telling from which direction as it sounded like it was coming from behind her but then the next instant, to her left. It kept approaching, getting steadily louder and louder.
Then suddenly, they stopped...as if they were right on the fringes of the stained glass.
But no matter where she would look, there would be nothing but the void.
The voice finally replied. "I am no one. I was once someone. But that someone is gone. You do not know me nor should you commit me to memory. It would do you no good." They paused. "What I want is simple; to expand your understanding." Then all was silent, like they were awaiting Lucille to move or react. Or respond. Still, nothing was to be seen yet his voice was much closer than before. No one was there...yet Lucille could feel eyes upon her.

Lucille would continue to look around herself as she tries to track the footsteps, keeping herself ready for something to attack her at a moment's notice. She may not have her sword but she can at least throw a fist sized ice ball at someone in a pinch!
Finally the walking would stop, and the voice would... Clarify wouldn't quite be the correct word, because she was left with more questions than answers. She had multiple things she wanted to ask this mysterious no-named person... Or not-person, whatever they, or it, is. She eventually settles on one question to ask. "...Why? What's in it for you?"

A much longer pause. For the briefest split-second, it looked like a space in the void distorted. Then an invasion of symbols erupted around her and encircled the stained glass.
âī¸ đī¸âī¸ â ī¸âī¸âī¸ âī¸â ī¸âī¸đ§ī¸âī¸ âī¸â ī¸đī¸ đī¸âī¸âšī¸âšī¸ â ī¸âī¸âī¸âī¸âŧī¸ âī¸â ī¸âī¸đ§ī¸âī¸ âī¸âī¸âī¸đ§ī¸ âī¸đ§ī¸ âšī¸âī¸đŖī¸đī¸âī¸ âĄī¸âī¸đī¸ âī¸âŧī¸âī¸ âšī¸âī¸âī¸âī¸âī¸ âī¸ đī¸âī¸â ī¸ đī¸âī¸ âŧī¸âī¸âī¸âī¸âī¸âšī¸âī¸đī¸
Then in the next instant, they were gone as if they weren't even there to begin with.
"Contact." was the reply. "I have not seen anyone for what feels like...an eternity."

Lucille waits expectantly for the response, but yelps as a bunch of symbols arranged in an incomprehensible manner circle around the windows. What the heck-
But just as soon as they came, they were gone. Was that some kind of attack?! What is... She perks up as she listens to the person's response. Her look of suspicion softens. "Contact... Have you... Been in this void... By yourself?" She asks, her eyes becoming sympathetic. "You must be incredibly lonely..."

Then came a rather chilling sound. Chuckling. Like they were tickled pink. It was a rather gentlemanly chuckle and was punctuated with another footstep. "Do not misunderstand. I am grateful for contact...with a being from the waking world. The world of light." Another footstep. No sight. "But here...we stand in a realm between light and dark. Between dream and reality. Here, I am never alone. But your lot...only come here when they sleep." Another step. A presence was now within the stained glass surface. "You only visit. While I...remain a constant resident...but you are in possession of something...you've yet to fully comprehend and why I can manifest...as well. Tell me..." Lucille would only need turn her head to see...it. "How fares...the waking world?"

Lucille listens with slowly widening eyes as the being further clarifies on things. Her sympathy once more turns to trepidation as she realizes this being is something truly alien to her. Their words make sense on a surface level and yet feel incomprehensible to her, like she's looking at a coin but can't see either of the faces. Finally the enigmatic being appears within the stained glass and she gasps. They look...
"...Awesome!" She exclaims, approaching the glass with a smile. "So you're some kind of dream creature? I-" She fidgets. "I'm not exactly in the know on a lot of things. For most of my life I was just a farmgirl; I didn't even know other worlds existed until recently. Oh and what do you mean by 'something I've yet to fully comprehend'? Do I have some kind of hidden secret power waiting to be unleashed?" She asks with clear curiosity.

Rising from the glass and appearing upright in the third dimension to be someone at least twice the height of Lucille. "I am aware." he replies in response to her life. He glanced over to the depiction of Calaguru and speaks...his mouth unmoving yet his....hands making movements and changing shapes mimicking the symbols that flashed from earlier. "You encountered them. The beings of darkness. Heartless. You've met a Master of old. You've met a seasoned warrior and received guidance." His eye seemed to pinpoint on the depiction of Lightning, Cid, and Master Ignia. His eye then jerked back into place, staring right at Lucille. Then back to Calaguru's image then back to Lucille.
"One who knows nothing can understand nothing...so you will know one thing; hearts are...everyone's secret power in one way or another. Query; where do you think you now stand?"

As the man steps through the glass she backs up a little, having to crane her head up to look at them. "O-oh... You're a tall one aren't you?" She says, feeling a little chill go up her spine as the being seems to know the aspects of her life. Is it reading her mind? Or her heart? Or maybe he's just inferring from the glass windows.
She would listen closely as he then clarifies that, technically, everyone has a secret power. Well, everyone with a Heart anyways. His question gives her pause as she hesitates, looking around. "Uhhh... I mean you said this was a place between light and dark and between dreams and reality and all that. So this is a kind of... Place between places?" She glances to the windows. "But I'm guessing it's deeper than that. Is this like my soul or something?" She feels a pang of worry. If this IS her soul then she basically just invited some unknown being into it. Is she going to get possessed and become a walking husk or something? She really hopes not.

His eyes...narrowed? "You...are close. This is your heart. It reflects all that you are. Your true self. The ones you've bonded with..." he took a few steps to the right. "...your memories as well. Those who have touched it can also manifest within its bounds...though these usually take the form of dreams and nightmares."
He looked to the left now and watched a pair of yellow slits emerge out in the void. "Some...you may not realize have touched it. Ones you've not seen yet." He quietly gestured to the circles with the images. "These are ones whom your heart deems important and you can manifest them easily just by thinking of them...but those you are unaware of...can make themselves manifest within you and give rise to bad dreams...it's how some conceptualize fear...and it very much is."
The moment he said as much, the same Shadows and the like emerged from the fringes and entered into the circle. The same ones that took her family away. He, this mysterious being, made no moves to stop them. Instead...
"While they are responsible...I'm afraid they were...under someone else's control." he looked slightly concerned, his hands even shaking lightly. "...in other words....what happened to them...was no accident." He then uses those self-same hands to strike away a few of them while more began entering the fray.

As he answers she snaps her fingers in mild frustration. "Aww dang it! That was gonna be my second guess..." She says. As the strange person explains further she listens with rapt attention, eyeing the different parts of her 'heart' and what they mean. She is especially intrigued as two slits that almost look like eyes make her shudder.
Then the Shadows come, and as she grows more concerned something the person says makes her eyes shrink to pinpricks. Deep down she always figured there was some sort of method behind the attack at her farmhouse, but she thought they were just trying to get Cal. If what this person is implying is true...
She looks down to her shaking hands. Why? For what purpose? As more and more Shadows pile on and close in her breath becomes visible, cold power swirling around her as she channels her ice magic. She fuels it with her enmity and grief, turning it into a roaring gale that knocks away the first Shadows about to reach her. Her hands close into fists. How dare they... How DARE they?!

He observes her using magic now, clearly enraged by the information he had just bestowed. As hurtful as it was, he viewed it simply as being truthful and factual. Emotion was put at the wayside. Not that he didn't seem to understand it. There were just more pressing matters in his viewpoint. "So much to do, so little time..." he casually remarked. "...not for me as time is concerned..." As he "helped" deal with the threat he looked to the Calaguru circle which seemed to light up in conjunction to Lucille's use of magic. This intrigued him. They were connected. She might have been told this already but he had to impress upon her even further. Because here...it had more of an impact. It made more sense.
"Everyone's Heart has a secret power...and yours has become intertwined with this...Dream Eater. Humans...cannot do magic. Now, suddenly you are able." A memory flashed by. Eda had told Lucille and Tsukiko that magic came from the heart. The message made...slightly more sense now. The more she used it, the more the sigil seemed to glow. "Magic...known by the heart of whomever the Dream Eater inherited. Seems they enjoyed the cold alot. But only because...your hearts align in this likeness....fascinating..." he mused. He seemed to be lost in thought...though his hands were dealing with the threats Lucille couldn't get to.
Those eye slits from the darkness subsisted. From them came a raspy voice. Deep. Like a jagged blade being dragged across a taut rope.
"Despair...hate...twas I...they were my puppets...such willing...easily manipulated puppets....just...like....you."
