Things were looking up and the skies were clear. Her eyes grew wide when handed the materials, stood there in thought for a short bit, then nodded in understanding without even having to ask. "Ah." she thought to herself, "a practitioner of ninjutsu..." Her tears cleared up and she bowed to Ayane. This was certainly a change of pace! Here she came just to get materials and some advice. What she got was a new path to try for herself. Luckily, she wouldn't be alone on that path.
And she had all the time in the world for it.
She returned up on deck without another word, sat back down in an open space and got to work on one of her favorite pastimes outside of swordplay: woodcarving.

"I'll get you the translated notebook so..." Ayane began... but Yanagi had already run off "She's sure an energetic one... Anyhow, back to work~"
Ayane pivoted and went right back to working on the engines, the joy of tinkering blanketing all else and giving her singleminded focus on the task at hand.
------------
Up on deck Onaka was back at work managing the crew, but Yanagi would be able to observe Serena was on deck now too, practicing with a sword of much higher quality than most of the others on board. She was going through various forms, but none of them were from the same style. It was like she'd taken a move from all the different schools of swordplay and stitched them together into a patchwork style of her own. It was weirdly efficient, but sloppy.
An experienced swordsman like Yanagi could see that despite Serena's natural talent having strung together copied moves that fit well together, the lack of understanding of why each move worked the way it did hindered her. She was only copying, she lacked the knowledge to execute her moves properly. With a proper teacher though, she could become quite skilled.
Serena ended her sequence of moves with a slash that sent a cutting pressure wave out over the side of the boat and into the sea. She hadn't noticed Yanagi yet it seemed, as she simply retook a starting stance and began practicing again.

The calming breeze helped relax the wayward Yanagi who focused on using the provided tools to craft her desired footwear. She even used her sword a few times to make precise cuts. During the sanding process of smoothing it out, she'd look up to see Serena who was practicing swordplay. While she'd admired her beauty, herform made the swordsman in her cringe and feel ultimately uncomfortable.
It was enough for her to not want to see more for the time being as she affixed holes and applied the portions needed to keep the geta stable and long-lasting. Only curiosity managed to make her look up and see the final slice across the waves. She stopped in awe of it. It merely skated across the water but didn't separate it. If it were stronger...!
She heard her training more as she put the finishing touches on her project. She smoothed it over one more time, lacquered it, dried it out, then slipped them on her feet. Clack clack. They were a perfect fit. There was never any doubt. The sound followed her as she made her way toward Serena, saying nothing for a short while before abruptly saying;
"Kind've...a mess, isn't it?" once she made her presence known, she gave an awkward smile, "there's nothing wrong with its efficiency...just that it feels like its missing pieces."

Serena glanced over to Yanagi, a mixture of emotions rising up in her, she settled on quiet annoyance though. She hadn't fully forgiven Yanagi for the earlier incident, but she couldn't make a snarky comeback when she knew the girl from Wano was right about this.
"I didn't get to learn how to use this from a teacher or family member" Serena said bluntly "I learned while fighting to survive by taking what people used against me or against each other around me and copying it for myself. I know perfectly well it's not an elegant style, but it works. Even if it's a mess. So unless you're offering to provide those missing pieces I'd appreciate you not insulting me for making do with what I've been given."

The girl chuckled and walked up until she faced the same direction as Serena. She was just a foot away from shoulder to shoulder. But her eyes were on the horizon beyond. "You did what you had to to survive; no one can fault you for that. The least I can do is try to help fill in those missing pieces with the knowledge passed down to me."
She took in a deep breath as her hand fell upon the hilt of her weapon. She took some steps forward as she sword soundlessly was unsheathed. In one artful motion, the blade was moved before her in a complete circle. She did this a few times. Then on the fifth rotation, her blade's tip stopped in multiple places; pointed up, facing left, pointed down, and facing right.
"All of it is connected. To the untrained eye, it looks like a hodge-podge of acquired swordplay. But...nothing is never as it seems." she walked ahead a bit more then faced Serena with a fierce, determined gaze. "Try landing a hit on me." she stated quite bluntly with her sword pointed up. "And I will show you the missing pieces."

Serena observed as Yanagi drew her blade and swung it in a circle multiple times, before taking a ready stance. Clearly this was someone with formal training. She'd fought people like that before, but she never overcame them with just her sword. It was always her devil fruit that saved her in those situations. She'd tried learning the blade from Isabelle... but the old Mink had a very reactionary and defensive style that worked well for someone with her enhanced senses and decades of experience... but it didn't work for her. She'd taken a few bits and pieces from it like she had everything else and moved on.
Now there was another trained swordsman to teach her, maybe this one would help her learn a style that worked for her... or maybe it would just be another thing to steal moves from. Either way... she'd benefit from this.
Taking her blade, Serena slashed down at Yanagi, striking forcefully but at a sloppy angle. She intended to knock Yanagi's blade down and then transition to a thrust, a move she'd stolen from some fencer or something. But the execution was all wrong, relying on brute force rather than technique and leverage.

Before Serena even swung, Yanagi uttered a small phrase.
"One Sword Style- Genbu: Shellspin."
With flowing form, her blade swung to not only meet Serena's blade but to deflect it in a manner to make Serena take a step back. The blade returned to its original position as if it had never left its initial one. That motion was enough to tell it was precise, practiced....and moreover...
Unique.
Yanagi stared back at Serena.
She grunted softly. "Forceful. Able to catch most average people off-guard. Not without merit. An attack fit for a beast. Beautiful...but against a practiced hand...an invitation for death." She stated as much quite coldly with a distant look of remorse in her eyes. "try again."

Serena staggered back, of course that wouldn't work, not against someone bigger than her with actual training. She could've overpowered someone bigger if she were using her fruit, but she couldn't keep relying on that. Gritting her teeth with frustration... mostly at herself... she stepped in again, this time going for several rapid fire thrusts. It was a decently executed move this time, fast and deadly. But the situation was wrong, as this move wasn't suited for an opening strike against a skilled target who could just deflect them all.

Yanagi's eyes were trained on the blade Serena wielded and then her form. She sighed. The blade came full circle once more but this time, it swung left then right and alternated, each time it would flawlessly deflect a series of strikes. Once the barrage was over, the blade returned back to its initial position.
"Flawless execution. But a rather poor opening move. It became obvious in your form and the way you draw your blade back and aim for certain spots, some more than once. A singular strike withmore force put behind it at a decent speed would be better to see the skill of your adversary. Then you may act accordingly."
Her words were deep, unmerciful in its iteration, and filled with what sounded like disappointment...and concern.
"While what you've done will reveal you plan to put your adversary on the defensive. Thus forcing them to act more rashly on average. But a more clever opponent will know this and find every opening they can take advantage of. Again."

Serena's frustration only grew as she continued failing to even pose a challenge. That tone of disappointment and concern irritated her... but the only way to get rid of it was to step up her game. So be it then, she'd do just that!
Before Yanagi's eyes, Serena would vanish into a blur, reappearing behind the tall swordswoman as Serena used Shave to accelerate around her, then spun with a horizontal slash at her backside. There wasn't any fancy form or trick here, just relying on her speed and power to score a hit, or at least dispel that infuriating tone looking down on her.

The moment Serena vanished, Yanagi's senses kicked into high gear. This was unprecedented. It caught her off-guard. But she had to adjust and act quickly. This was completely new and did not know how Serena got behind her so quickly. But what mattered was how to respond. Herblade came down as she turned and...
She managed to just block the blow with a resounding clang. She grunted with effort and the seemingly cold and focused Yanagi chuckle and smile. "Splendid. This here is a superb opening move. Lets them feel your might and speed and know they are in for a fight they will either enjoy...or hate." On closer inspection, Yanagi had been forced back a bit from that strike alone and took her double-handing her sword to absorb the impact. If she'd be any slower, she might have gotten cut. "You gave it your all here and that is something I respect, admire, and even love."

"It's a technique higher ranking government officials use" Serena said "it's called shave, it's one of I think seven techniques they can learn. My version is imperfect though. The real thing is much faster, still it's a good technique that does help compensate for everything else I'm lacking."
Serena took another ready stance "I still have no clue why you keep making flirty comments like that towards someone like me, but if you think they'll make me hold back you've got another thing coming" she said as she charged in, slashing again several times. She wasn't relying on her imperfect Shave now, instead just poking and prodding at Yanagi to learn from how she defended herself from everything. Her words revealed more than her moves though, it seemed she had a complete lack of awareness as to why someone like Yanagi would be interested in her, just assuming it was some sort of ulterior motive driving it all.

So these are the techniques of the people against them. It would be much faster than this and Yanagi secretly dreaded to witness such a thing. but also wanted to learn how to do it. Yanagi turned to take a similar stance and smiled at Serena's words as she charged forward with more realized attacks at least in Yanagi's eyes.
With every swing she showed off before, she purposefully did so again against Serena's attacks but also showing that at the last second upon making contact with the blade with her own, her wrist turning to make the blade glide a little before being effectively deflected. "On the contrary, I much rather my partner be strong. Not distracted. I admire that. It's downright attractive!" she beamed with an unapologetic and genuine smile.

Serena was observing each move Yanagi made, trying to learn from them, but the continued flirts distracted her further. Eventually the distraction proved too much, and her next slash suddenly packed a lot more force behind it than the others, enough to knock Yanagi back several feet as Serena unleashed kinetic energy stored up by her devil fruit into the attack unintentionally.
"Stop it. I don't know what your game is, but enough is enough." Serena said angrily "seeing what you've seen, no sane person would want any sort of relationship with me. If you just want to have a fling then just come out and say that, don't go around trying to get me thinking there's anything more than that in my future. I know my lot in life, and a relationship ain't part of it."

The strike surprised her but she recovered from it all the same with asmall smile and sheathing her blade. Those scars ran deeper than thegal from Wano considered. her jubilant smile turned into a frown once Serena's words began to remind her of something she heard once before. What was this hurt that cut deeper than any blade? A spark of remembrance flashed in her head and wizened words reminded her that not everyones wounds heal equally as fast. But...
And then the words spoke to her she began to recite herself for both herself and Serena to hear. "...the longer you refuse to recover from your own wounds, the harder it will become to hide the scars. Trust inflicts these wounds. Cutting more deeply than any blade when it is betrayed." She looked away to hide tears from an old memory.
Her fingers curled up into fists that trembled and whose knuckles turned white."My grandfather told me that." she said softly, slightly choked up by the hitch in her throat. She strode past Serena, not even so much as giving any eye contact in the process. "He also said...the only being in existence capable of denying one's own future and happiness...is oneself."
With a deep breath and a quickened pace, she walked away. "If you'll excuse me..." She then returned to the spot she had been topreviously where she last meditated and plopped down to do that once more with abit more focus than last time.
