The Moon, Earth’s only natural satellite and the inspiration for mankind’s century spanning dreams of space exploration. The formerly desolate hunk of rock would be among the first destinations to be successfully colonized in the early days of the Universal Century. By the 70s of the Universal Century, its surface was covered by the lights of human expansion. Von Braun, Granada, Aires City, Anaheim, Amman and more dotted the moonscape, marking mankind’s first permanent forays beyond the Earth. Largely under the umbrella of Zeon influence during the One Year War, the Moon would swing back to Federation control by the war’s end. However, by U.C. 0087, the political alignments began to once again sway wildly. With an increasingly lax Federation refusing to hold the Titans accountable for their crimes, the Moon would be among the first bastions of spacenoids to rally together and form the Anti-Earth Union Group or AEUG. Among the cities to openly support the AEUG was the city of Amman, itself hosting several factories owned by mega-corporation Anaheim Electronics that would be instrumental in forming the AEUG’s fleets and homegrown mobile suit designs such as the MSA-003 Nemo. It was support that would ultimately be its undoing.

In the lead up to the AEUG invasion of Jaburo, the city of Amman would find itself square in the Titan’s sights as they hunted the battleship Argama. Following a series of skirmishes among the lunar craters, the Titans would make a final attempt to destroy the Argama and a sheltered fleet from launching for a future rendezvous with other AEUG vessels. With both newly christened Nemos and even Petite Mobile Suits thrown into the firefight, Amman would succeed in sending off their allies but not without great loss, the city itself bombarded to a crippling state by the Titans. In the end, however, the city would prove resilient and those who survived would go on to be considered symbols of the AEUG’s struggle. These very patriots would find themselves lifted up from the rubble of Amman and reformed into a larger AEUG defense unit that would intercept the Titans wherever they deigned to show the gryphon emblazoned on their equipment. Officially named the 9th Lunar Defense Unit and led by Captain Harold Rutherford, the men and women of the AEUG informally dubbed them “The Amman Hellfighters” in deference to the hell that was wrought upon the city of Amman.

As a unit centered around the defense of the lunar cities, the Amman Hellfighters dock amongst the various cities that support the AEUG but are most often docked within Granada.
